Washing Symbols and Labels on Clothes Explained
They may appear confusing, but washing labels are actually quite easy to understand.
Each clothing label should tell you what the fabric is made from, and include up to five symbols that let you know how to care for it. Here’s our essential guide to what each symbol means. Download Ariel’s washing machine symbols guide and put it on your laundry room’s wall!

What do the washing labels on clothes labels mean?
This group of UK washing symbols helps you decide if your clothing is safe to wash in your washing machine, and which setting, and what temperature you should use.
It is generally depicted as a bucket filled with water (except for the ‘Do not wring’ symbol). If the garment is machine washable, then you’ll either see dots or numbers inside the bucket symbol, representing the recommended maximum temperature: one dot means 30 °C (meaning that you have to wash your clothing in cold water), two dots 40 °C (warm water), and four dots 60 °C. In case you see one line drawn underneath the bucket, it means that your piece of clothing should be washed on a synthetic cycle, while two lines represent the gentle or wool wash cycle. If you find the hand wash symbol on your garment’s fabric care label, wash the item by hand at 40 °C or lower, or use your washing machine’s hand wash program.
Bleaching symbols on washing labels
Before you turn to your bottle of bleach to make your whites shine like they used to, it’s worth taking a look at your garment’s fabric care label to see if the clothing can handle bleaching agents.
If you see an empty triangle, that means you can safely use bleach on your piece of clothing when necessary. Diagonal lines inside the triangle refer to the use of non-chlorine bleach, however in the case when the triangle is crossed out by two lines, you shouldn’t use bleach at all.
Drying guidelines on clothing labels
In addition to washing and ironing, the laundry process also includes drying. To prevent your garment from shrinking or becoming misshapen when drying, you can find a number of helpful symbols on the fabric care label, informing you of the most surefire way to dry your clothes without causing any damage to the fabric.
A square with a circle inside means that the item can be safely tumble dried, while the number of dots inside the tumble dry symbol indicates what temperature setting to use: one dot stands for low heat, two dots for medium, and three for high heat setting. No dot means that you can tumble dry your clothes on any heat. If you see a bar below the dryer symbol, then use the ‘Permanent Press’ setting, while two bars mean that you have to use the ‘Delicate’ setting. If the symbol is crossed over, do not tumble dry your garment, but let it dry naturally instead. A square with three vertical lines inside represents drip drying, a single horizontal line in the middle indicates flat drying, and a drooping line means hang to dry.
Ironing symbols on fabric labels
Ironing symbols depict an iron with dots inside representing the maximum temperature that you should use to iron the garment.
If the iron doesn’t have any dots, it means that you can iron your piece of clothing at any temperature. Usually, you’ll find the one-dot ironing symbol on delicate items like woolen and silk, the two-dot symbol on synthetics, and the three-dot symbol on linen and cotton clothing. If you see a cross over the symbol, it means that the garment isn’t suitable for ironing, while the image of two lines shooting out from the bottom of the iron with a cross over it stands for ‘steaming is not allowed’.
Dry cleaning symbols on fabric labels
Some garments are better off being handled by a professional: that’s when dry cleaning comes into the picture. The below symbols are intended to help you decide if your piece of clothing should be dry cleaned, and to tell the dry-cleaner what solvent to use.
A circle means that the item is suitable for dry cleaning, while the letters instruct the dry-cleaner on the required process.
Additional dry cleaning instructions
When dealing with your most delicate pieces of clothing, your dry-cleaner appreciates every help they get.
That’s why fabric manufacturers include many dry cleaning symbols on clothing labels, represented by the combination of a circle and a straight line.
If the symbols found on the fabric labels of your clothes still confuse you, here's a quick video guide on how to read them!

How to Read Laundry Symbols
Laundry symbols seem like another language, but the washing instruction symbols on your garments’ care labels tell you exactly how to do the washing and drying, as well as give extra information on bleaching and ironing. Read on for our quick guide to what the symbols mean, or download and print your own laundry symbols chart to refer to when you see a symbol you don’t recognize.
Washing Symbols
Getting the temperature and wash cycle right is important for seeing great laundry results, and can even prevent damage to your clothes. The clothes washing symbols below can give you an idea for temperature, indicated by the number of dots in the tub of water symbol, whereas different cycle types are represented by a tub with one or two lines drawn under it.
Washing cycle symbols
Washing temperature symbols
Washing machine symbols
Important: Don't forget to look out for dry clean signs, given by a circle, or hand wash symbols, indicated by a tub of water with a hand sign, so you'll know when to avoid putting garments in the washing machine.
Drying Symbols
Drying is an important part of the clothing care process, but we’ve all heard those scary stories of cashmere sweaters that come out of the wash three sizes too small.
Knowing your dryer symbols, like the square with a circle in the middle that indicates tumble drying allowed, can help you avoid putting the wrong garment in the tumble dryer. Other symbols can give you additional information, such as a square with a horizontal line in the middle means you should dry the item flat, or the crossed-out twisted symbol, which tells you not to wring the garment. The temperature is given by the increasing number of dots inside a circle.

Bleaching symbols
If you want to use bleach, you’ll want to take a look at your garment’s fabric care label to see if there is a bleach symbol, given by a triangle ormore importantly a do not bleach symbol, a triangle crossed out. Recognizing these signs can save your garment from getting permanently damaged by chlorine bleach.

Ironing Symbols
Some fabrics look great after ironing but others, like more delicate materials, can be damaged. There are even some fabrics that simply need special care when ironing.
For example, if you want to iron your new dress shirt and you want to know if it can be ironed safely, lookout for the iron symbol on your garment, represented by a little iron symbol with dots in the middle that denote the temperature setting, like those shown below.

- What fabrics should not be dried in the dryer?
- Can clothes with a crossed-out dryer symbol be dried on the "no heat" setting? nine0006
A circle in a square is a symbol of tumble drying. The presence of the icon on the clothing label means that the item does not have to be hung on a clothesline. You can dry it in a special device.
Sign meaning:
- Tumble dryer
- Normal tumble dry
- Allowed drying in a special drying chamber (centrifuge)
- Gentle drying
- Delicate drying
Recommendation
Today, the dryer is widely used by many families. It allows you to quickly put things in order. Using a clothes dryer, you can get rid of a lot of dust in the house, get away from clotheslines on the balcony and loggia, bulky electric dryers in the room. In 90% of cases, the dryer eliminates the need for ironing. The thing can be washed, dried, and immediately folded into the closet.
A tumble dryer, if properly used, can dry clothes more delicately than hot sun and dry air. nine0003
Recommendations:
- Sort items by material density, color, icon type: circle in a square without underline, with a black circle, with one or two stripes.
- Select the program according to the symbol on the label: gentle, delicate or normal (standard) drying.
- Read the instructions for your machine with a description of the operation of the modes.
- Check clothing for stubborn stains before drying. The tumble dryer can help "seal" dirt. nine0006
- Use spin after wash. Wet items will take longer to dry than damp items. Electricity consumption will rise.
- Tumble dry on a low load for delicate fabrics.
What
looks likeThe tumble dryer icon set by international organizations is a circle within a square. This is what it looks like:
It is important not to confuse it with a square in a circle. Such an icon is not used in clothing labeling. The category of drying and spinning is indicated by a square with different content. nine0003
A square with a dark circle means that the mode must be set to no heat or air only. It is designed for the most delicate things that do not withstand heat. The program also helps to fluff the fleecy fabric, remove hair and small debris from it.
An underline indicates the delicacy of the mode. One line is a gentle mode, two are a delicate one. The symbol means that intensive modes (Express dryer, long drying, drying at high temperature) cannot be used for the product. nine0003
The label on clothing may contain the inscription in English instead of symbols:
- Tumble dry
- Tumble dry no heat
Questions and answers
Olga
Modern housewife
Ask a question
Do's and Don'ts
Items with the same "normal tumble dry" or "delicate drying" icon must not be placed in the tumble dryer drum. You need to pay attention to the type of fabric. Thick fabrics take longer to dry, thin fabrics dry faster. Sorting of white linen and colored linen is also necessary. nine0003
What you can do
The presence of the circle-in-square symbol on the product tag indicates that it can be wrung out and dried, including in a washing machine. Many modern devices are equipped with this feature. An important point: before drying, the amount of clothes in the drum must be reduced by half (up to 2.5 kg of laundry).
Questions and answers
Which fabrics and clothes should not be dried in a dryer?
The use of the dryer is contraindicated for very thin fabrics: chiffon, cambric, nylon, organza. Do not dry natural silk in it. Wool and cotton can shrink and warp a lot. You should also be careful with clothes made of elastic fabrics that contain elastic bands (may stretch), plastic fasteners, buttons, zippers, buckles, printed pictures, glued rhinestones, beads or other decorations (may be damaged, reprinted, glued to other parts of the fabric). nine0003
Can clothes with a crossed-out dryer symbol be dried on the "no heat" setting?
No. If there is a sign on the clothes that prohibits drying in a tumble dryer, it is better not to do this even at zero temperature. The tipping motion can cause shrinkage, causing wrinkles that are difficult to remove without heat.
Almost every clothing label has a circle in a square. The meaning of the symbol is “spinning and drying in a special drying chamber (centrifuge) is allowed.” Additional elements (lines and dots) suggest which program to choose. For many families, using a tumble dryer is very convenient and makes it much easier to care for clothes. nine0003
