How to Decorate Your Home in Cozy Cottage Style

Design by Becca Interiors

Cottages are some of the coziest homes around. Tucked away in idyllic locations—like the mountains or the beach—these petite getaways are endlessly charming. While their small size plays a role in their warm and welcoming feel, their décor is even more responsible.

“Cottage-style décor is all about creating a comfortable and casual space designed for easy living,” Sarah Fischer, principal designer of Sarah & Sons Interiors, says. “It has roots in traditional design, but is softened from age and use.”

Cottage style is packed with traditional prints, cozy furnishings, and handed-down treasures, and it has a way of making everyone feel at home. While cottage-style décor is most popular in cottages, you can get the cozy look in any home. To help you turn your space into a charming getaway, we asked four designers to share their favorite cottage-style décor ideas.

Bespoke Only

“Since cottages were often second homes, cottage décor includes a mix of styles and patterns—as if furnishings were handed down from different family members,” Fischer says. So, forgo the matching furniture sets and piece together a charming collection of antiques and flea market finds.

Set the tone in your cozy cottage by sticking with soft, welcoming colors.

“Cottage-style décor is happy, casual, and charming,” Amy Peltier, creative director of Amy Peltier Interior Design, says. “Make sure the space is light and bright, and use pastel and airy colors to bring comfort to your space.”

Cottages are designed with easy living in mind, so favor materials that will add form and function to your home. “Consider beadboard and wood paneling as part of the millwork to add character that can withstand bumps and dents,” Fischer says.

The best cottages don’t just look charming—they also feel incredibly cozy. So, stock up on soft, inviting furniture. “Favor ultra-comfortable furnishings that are very lounge-worthy,” Ginger Curtis, principal designer of Urbanology Designs, says.

One of the hallmarks of cottage style? “Creative use of cozy spaces,” Fischer says. Sure, your home may be roomier than the average cozy cottage, but there are bound to be a few tight spaces you can transform into charming alcoves.

When filling your cottage with vintage furniture, try to use old items in new ways. “Bring your aunt’s dresser into the mudroom for additional storage,” Fischer says. “Or, turn]an old tool bench into the perfect kitchen island.”

Prints and patterns add personality to any cottage—just be sure to keep your picks traditional. “I love a blend of buffalo check patterns, mixed with stripes and block prints,” Mary Maloney, owner of Bee’s Knees Interior Design Studio, says.

Make your home look like a cottage from top to bottom by leaving your ceiling beams exposed. “I love to add rustic beams to a bright white ceiling for a look that screams cozy cottage,” Curtis says.

In any hand-me-down-filled space, you’re bound to end up with texture, so lean into the look. “My favorite way to achieve cottage style pieces is through charming details, such as floral patterns, organic textures, sisal rugs, and woven materials,” Peltier says.

As you decorate your space, soften your sleekest pieces with plush cushions, chunky blankets, and other cozy accents. “Layer on cute and cozy furnishings—think: charming nostalgia,” Peltier says.

Cottages aren’t exclusively filled with old items. “Typically, it is an eclectic look—a blend of old and new,” Maloney says. Balance out your favorite vintage pieces with a few modern accents.

Katie Martinez Design

When stocking up on vintage pieces, designers agree: Stick with genuine antiques. “To prevent cottage décor from veering into country kitsch, run away from the brand new furniture sets with faux distressing,” Fischer says. “Find vintage pieces with authentic wear instead.”

13 of 16

Katie Leclercq

“With cottage-style décor, it’s all about the charming details,” Peltier says. So, invest in homey accents—like weathered hardware, vintage hand towels, and lots of fresh flowers.

Katie Leclercq

Don’t get hung up on what a cottage “should” look like. “Cottage décor is all about your unique sense of comfort—and formulaic design won’t get you there,” Fischer says. Instead, focus on designing a space you'll love spending time in. “You'll end up with a style that is authentically your own,” she says.

Ashley Montgomery Design

Stocking up on special pieces is a big part of furnishing a cottage—but editing is, too. “Often, less is more," Curtis says. “Pare back oversized furniture and accessories to truly let special pieces have their moment.

“Cottage style has a ‘collected over time’ look and feel,” Curtis says. “Take your time looking for one-of-a-kind pieces.”

At the end of this "treasure hunt," you’ll have a charmingly curated space that looks and feels truly special.

What is cottage style?

Cottage style is all about showcasing and preserving prized original features as well as creating cozy, homely spaces. Small but beautiful, cottages are awash with historic stone and timber floors, rustic ceiling beams and quirky angles, and its these elements which give cottage interiors their unique character.

Prized features of the rural landscape, chocolate-box cottages are entwined with geology and the landscape, so taking decorating inspiration from the natural surroundings is a fitting place to start thinking about a scheme. Think colors inspired by the nature, botanical prints and an eclectic mix of handmade and antique wooden furniture.

1. Decorate in earthy, natural tones

Cottages are inextricably linked with their rural setting and brimming with natural materials with soft weathered textures so what better palette to decorate in than with the gentle colors of the countryside?

Here, Little Greene’s greenish neutral – North Brink Grey 291 – sets a relaxed mood and a calm foundation for furniture in a mix of Vanessa Arbuthnott's nature-inspired fabrics including a vintage german sofa in Fruit Garden Straw, Pigeon, Charcoal and armchairs in her May Blossom Pigeon/Charcoal.

2. Mix and match wooden furniture

Embracing natural materials is the perfect complement to the rustic features of a cottage, as Susie Watson, founder of Susie Watson Designs , explains.

‘Using natural wood furniture, connects a space to its surroundings and adds character,’ she says. ‘Antique furniture can blend well with newly bought furniture, don’t worry about matching the color of the wood just make sure the era of the pieces feels coherent.’

3. Choose warm, earthy colors

(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby )

Cottage style is all about creating that warm welcome and homely feel. Choosing warm shades based on natural earth pigments is an easy way to enhance the mood of a space; try creams, and earthy stone and honeyed yellow shades through to warm plaster pinks and rich terracottas for instant coziness.

When decorating an old cottage with original plaster it is advised to use a breathable formula made such as Edward Bulmer's Natural Paint , for similar shade to the above try Brick.

4. Choose a Shaker-style kitchen

Based on the Shaker principles of simplicity, utility, and craftsmanship, the elegant proportions and fuss-free, linear design of Shaker kitchen cabinetry make it perfect for a humble cottage, mixed in with reclaimed unfitted pieces for a relaxed feel.

If low ceilings are an issue, limiting storage mainly to base cabinetry is a good way to keep a cottage feeling bright and open, while also allowing beautiful stone walls to stand out, as this beautiful deVOL kitchen proves.

Cottages are loved for their warm and welcoming feel, and key to creating this is including a rustic farmhouse table and chairs for social gathering, as Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL explains.

'The charm of a cottage kitchen is often the quirky and eclectic mix of old and new that gives the feeling of a cosy and welcoming space. A vintage kitchen table and chairs is a must, all cottages need a spot for chatting and drinking tea and the ubiquitous jug of wild flowers.'

6. Fill your home with garden flowers

(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby / Styling Pippa Blenkinsop)

When it comes to cottage style 'fresh garden or hedge row flowers are a must and can mark the difference between urban and country living,' reveals Vanessa Arbuthnott.

For a pretty floral centerpiece on your kitchen table, gather a selection of vessels in different materials and sizes such as apothercary vases, chippy enamel just, jam jars and stoneware pots and fill with your fresh pickings. Don't worry about stems being different lengths or about colors clashing, this variety of blooms jostling for attention is key to the quaint cottage look.

7.

Decorate with heritage prints

(Image credit: Future / Kasia Fiszer)

Pay homage to the beautiful rural setting of your cottage by decorating with papers and fabrics that capture the charm of the countryside. William Morris – artist, designer, poet, socialist and ‘Godfather of the Arts and Crafts Movement’ – created hundreds of designs that celebrate the beauty of nature.

Mostly created around the late 19th-century, his stylized flora and fauna prints are still available to buy today, in original and refreshed colorways, and are the perfect way to bring the beauty of nature into the bedroom.

8. Add in upcycled vintage furniture

(Image credit: Future / Kasia Fiszer / Styling Pippa Blenkinsop)

The great thing about creating a cottage look is that it can be created on a shoestring using vintage pieces and a bit of imagination. Easy to come by at specialist furniture shops and flea markets, dated brown furniture can easily be refreshed with some chalk furniture paint into original and rustic pieces, as this pretty desk proves.

Don't worry about the finish or the wood color, instead look for beautiful shapes that will shine once painted. When you have spotted the perfect piece, simply sand down, coat with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint and sand again once dry to create this weathered French look.

9. Choose a traditional, curvaceous sofa

With elegant curves and a Howard-style silhouette, this small Classic sofa from Susie Watson Designs is a great choice for zoning a snug kitchen-cum-living room, and is layered with paisley, ticking and statement floral cushions, plus a wool throw, for a cozy cottage feel.

10. Get retro with your textile treatments

Thought that the curtain pelmet and sink skirt were things of the past? Think again if you're looking for cottage bathroom ideas. Vanessa Arbuthnott shows how these vintage-style designs can look fresh and stylish in this bathroom using her pretty mix and match fabrics. To stop the look feeling too cutesy, embrace contemporary color combinations, such as the the Dark Hay/ Charcoal colorways of these French Ticking, Herbaceous Border and Dainty Daisy fabrics.

‘The yellow and grey botanical fabrics bring the countryside in and the pretty striped frill around the sink softens and warms up the space too.’ says Vanessa. ‘The bathroom is given a light and airy feel, with its painted wooden floor, and free standing bath.’

11. Paper with romantic botanical wallpapers

Prints inspired by nature are a mainstay of quintessential cottage interiors. A master of timeless style, Colefax & Fowler is the go-to brand for romantic botanical prints. New from its Jardine Florals collection, Greenacre features distinctive fan-like gingko leaves with dancing blossoms to produce a contemporary foliage design, and is available across wallpaper. For a vintage botanical bedroom try using this Leaf Green colorway wall to wall, as well as on a quilt, chair and valance.

12. Use a neutral palette to highlight rustic features

There’s something truly magical about sleeping up in the rafters. Let original oak beams stand out against a palette of simple neutrals or pastels. Complement the rustic patina of aged wood with a natural seagrass carpet, then try delicate patterns, such as Neptune’s Emma linen in Sage for upholstery and cushions.

'As spring is on the way, natural colours like pinks and greens, complement the light and contrast harmoniously against darker greys,' says Amber, home designer at Neptune . 'Alternatively, an all-white look can go a long way in lifting the room to create a lighter space, and our Grace scatter cushions are perfect for adding a little texture.'

13. Create a cozy reading spot

(Image credit: Future / Jody Stewart)

There's lots of Marie Kondo-inspired talk about living clutter-free these days, but when it comes to cottage interiors, a little clutter is a good thing. Shelves of books make homes look cozy and lived in. Having bookshelves floor to ceiling in the living room will keep books organised and will mean they're close at hand when you want to curl up with one by the fire.

75 new rustic interior ideas with photo

Science is developing rapidly, and every year it becomes more and more difficult not to get lost in the variety of new styles and materials. However, those who want to equip the house comfortably and with taste should not despair - the good old village comfort will come to the rescue.

Over its long history, country music has acquired a huge number of variations, adapting to the national characteristics of different countries and absorbing the local flavor. There are three main varieties. nine0003

  1. Russian country style
  2. English Country
  3. French provence

A fireplace in the living room creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere

A bedroom in a tree will look very nice

A rustic kitchen is a great design option. It will be a pleasure to cook on it

Each of these styles is individual and reflects the cultural traditions of their country, but the overall concept is still the same - naturalness, simplicity and comfort. nine0003

Unity with nature also plays an important role in interior design, because one of the main principles of rustic style is the rejection of artificial materials in favor of natural ones. Particular preference is given to wood, although stone is also widely used.

The decoration of a village house is distinguished by deliberate rudeness. You can flaunt floor beams, do not be shy about clumsy plaster and hand-knit furniture - all this will only add originality. Practicality instead of excesses is the basic law of creating a rustic interior, but this does not mean that you should give up decorations and forget about beauty. On the contrary, it is worth paying special attention to them. nine0003

Wood-burning stove in the interior will take you back a few years

A rustic living room with a fireplace is a great place to relax with friends

Country style is characterized by a large number of decor items. Invariable attributes are carpets, which are laid not only on the floor, but also hung on the walls, an abundance of natural textiles, pillows on chairs, a table covered with a tablecloth or a lace napkin. Hand-made interior details are especially welcome. Knitting, embroidery, patchwork technique - any handmade only benefits the creation of comfort, and the rustic style opens up great scope for imagination and creativity. nine0003

But before you add accessories to the interior, you should think about the color palette. Country style gives its preference to natural shades and muted, soft tones. Pastel colors are also popular. When choosing a color scheme, there are no strict restrictions, but fluorescent should be avoided. The absence of flashy colors and neon creates a peaceful atmosphere and does not strain your eyesight.

The atmosphere of rural comfort can be easily created both in an apartment and in a country house. nine0003

Finishing and most of the interior items are made of wood. For wall cladding, both wooden panels and solid logs are used. Russian rustic style is uncomplicated, but not without appeal. nine0003

The furniture is maximally simplified. In lighting, lamps with a lampshade or kerosene are used. For the Russian style, the presence of a large chest in the house is characteristic. Rustic style in the interior of a country house will help create a Russian stove. This practical thing is used not only for heating, but also for cooking. Near the stove in the village house there are corresponding attributes - a woodpile with firewood for kindling, a poker, a shovel and a tong with cast irons.

Decorate a Russian-style home with patchwork quilts and painted pottery, and hang cross-stitch or panels made from natural materials on the walls. nine0003

In such a kitchen you will enjoy cooking

A candle on the wall will perfectly complement the decor

In the English style, design issues were approached thoroughly. Stone and brickwork is often used in the wall decoration, and the furniture is distinguished by its massiveness: a separate dining room will be required for the dining table, and a king-sized four-poster bed will look appropriate in the bedroom. Armchairs have high backs and are made of wood, and then covered with leather and decorated with decorative carvings. Usually they are located in the living room next to the fireplace. nine0003

In the colors of English country, light tones (beige, gray) closely coexist with rich shades (chocolate, red-brown, dark green).

For decor, heavy dense fabrics in a cage are used. They are used to make covers for furniture, curtains, blankets, decorative pillows and other interior decorations.

Flowers with fruits will complement the table setting

An example of a real hunter's living room

Against the backdrop of other rustic styles, Provence is the most romantic and dreamy. It is characterized by light colors (especially white and blue), delicate pastel shades and floral patterns. The decor sometimes uses a bright red accent.

Unlike English country furniture, Provence furniture is light, elegant and usually comes in light pastel colors. The upholstery often uses floral ornaments, sometimes a cage or a strip. Furniture is also artificially aged to give the interior a retro touch. nine0003

The walls are covered with plain plaster and the floors are covered with terracotta tiles or white painted planks.

The French rustic style is about elegance and getting rid of bulky unnecessary details, but some additional elements are still acceptable. The Provence-style interior can be decorated with homemade lace napkins, a bouquet of wild flowers in a porcelain vase, or wood painting.

Wooden walls are the foundation of rustic style

Rustic styles are not similar to each other, each of them has its own history associated with the national characteristics of local peoples. For many years, the main goal of country style was practicality and convenience. And what defines the rustic style in the interior today?

  1. Finishing materials are wood and stone.
  2. Finishing is deliberately simple and rough.
  3. Furniture mainly made of wood, simple and durable, with a retro effect. nine0008
  4. Many handmade elements, in other words - handmade.
  5. The decor uses an abundance of textiles (curtains, blankets, tablecloths, napkins).
  6. In country houses, stoves and fireplaces serve as sources of heat.

The main task of the living room is to create a hospitable mood and cozy atmosphere in a country house. To do this, you should use wooden or wicker furniture, choose warm colors in the design, and make the light a little muffled. For curtains, sofa covers and other textile items, you should choose natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen. Sofa cushions can be decorated with embroidery - handmade, made with soul, will transform any interior. nine0003

The ideal material for living room flooring is wood, but laminate can also be used. It is also worth covering it with a soft carpet or rug.

Walls can be wood-paneled, finished with stone, or simply plastered.

Handmade decorations placed on the shelves will add charm to the interior. For this purpose, you can use clay or wooden figurines, knitted toys, cross-stitch inserted into the frame.

The final touch in the decoration of the living room will be a bouquet of fresh wildflowers placed on a fireplace or coffee table. nine0003

A white kitchen that will make cooking a pleasure

Stone, wood, fireplace - basic rustic elements

The fireplace in the bedroom will immerse you in a state of calmness

In the bedroom - the room where a person gets a long-awaited rest after a long day at work - must be comfortable. Rustic style in the interior of the bedroom will be preferred by people who value comfort and naturalness.

You can use wallpaper with a floral print or decorate the walls with panels. Wooden beams in the decor of the ceiling will add originality to the room. You don’t have to invent anything special with the floor - just lay a carpet or rug on it. nine0003

Country style is good for its ease. You can choose the simplest furniture, the main thing is to be strong, reliable and natural. In the decor, as usual, handmade should be preferred. Patchwork quilts fit perfectly into the decor.

Plates on the wall will decorate the style

Wood-burning fireplace in the living room will warm you in the most severe frosts

It doesn't take much to create a romantic mood in the bedroom. It is enough to lay snow-white sheets, lay out pillows with floral embroidery, put a bouquet of fresh flowers on the bedside table, and you're done! nine0003

Despite its venerable age and simple essence, the popularity of country music is only growing every day. Rustic style does not shine with luxury and splendor, but gives a feeling of calm and comfort and turns any home into a place where you always want to return.

A common question: what is the name of the rustic style in the interior? Confusion naturally arises due to the large number of variations: from chalets to country and shabby chic. This diversity largely appeared due to the fact that the rural style adapted to the characteristics of different countries, acquired specific features and, accordingly, names. Consider the main varieties. nine0003

Rustic

This variation of the country style in the interior reflects the most common ideas about rural life.

The key element of direction is wood. There should be a lot of this material everywhere: in interior and exterior decoration, furniture, decor. Wood can be used in any form: smoothly polished or unfinished, painted or natural. You can choose one or a combination of all these techniques. This direction is characterized by sweeping forms, massive furniture and large decoration elements (for example, decorative beams). The house should be large, filled with light, with high ceilings. nine0003

Veranda Estate Homes social networks

Here, as in any version of rural design, the central element is the tree. Paint and plaster are also actively used for finishing, there may be a stone or concrete floor. Large barn doors, furniture from pallets and old boxes, straw products look organic. The walls can be finished with wood, but more often they are simply plastered. As much handmade as possible is welcome. In the decor, you can use natural or artificial fur, leather and eco-leather, jewelry with a hunting theme. nine0008

  • Massive wooden furniture.
  • Vintage decor, paintings in large frames, antique crockery.
  • Natural materials for finishing and decoration: stone, wood, leather, wool, cotton.
  • Use one or more traditional indoor prints: tartan, stripes, florals, etc.
  • Furniture and finishes must be solid and of high quality to serve for many years. Much attention is paid to textiles - it is he who sets the right mood and adds comfort. The English style is suitable for both spacious houses and small cottages. nine0003

    Provence

Provence is impossible to confuse with anything. The French version of rural style has its own unique charm, lightness and characteristic elements that are immediately remembered.

    Maison des Souvenirs social networks

From French provence is translated as "province", the same name is given to the region famous for its picturesque nature and lavender fields. It is these romantic pictures of French life that underlie the style. In the design of a dacha or cottage, light colors predominate: white, beige, gray, any pastel colors. The decoration uses natural materials, the furniture is elegant, with wicker and forged elements. There should be a lot of decor, even with a little excess, because it is he who creates that very unique cozy atmosphere. Be sure to use cute ornaments: flowers, a light cage, thin non-contrasting stripes, polka dots. The rooms should have a lot of textiles (curtains and tablecloths are especially important), vintage and handmade items, fresh flowers. nine0003

    Comina Architecture social networks

First of all, this is the name of the houses that are located in the Alps. They are not only inhabited by locals - they are a popular and atmospheric alternative to ordinary hotels for tourists. The style in this case is determined by the architecture itself: the houses have a clear division into a more durable lower tier made of stone (this is required by the features of the landscape) and an upper tier made of wood. Most often, the chalet has a massive triangular roof with a large angle of inclination - this is necessary so that the snow falls from it faster. nine0003

Inside, the space is decorated with wood and stone. All materials must be natural, wood is usually processed. To make it cozy inside, a large amount of textiles made of wool and cotton, a variety of decor are used. The house always has a fireplace around which you can gather and warm up. The color scheme is restrained, without bright color splashes, in natural tones. Furniture is chosen simple, without excessive decorations and pomposity, as, for example, in the classical style. In general, the design can be a little rough and ascetic, but always cozy and warm. nine0003

The color scheme should be calm, pleasing to the eye and built on the basis of natural shades. Shades of beige, light gray, white and brown predominate. As additional, you can use deeper colors, as well as delicate pastels - relevant for Provence. In some cases, dark colors can become the main color scheme: for example, in English country or chalets. nine0003

Cosiness is of the utmost importance for a rustic-style country house, so it is desirable that warm or neutral tones predominate in the palette. The exception is Provence, which is characterized by blue, mint, lavender and snow-white tones. Green will always be appropriate - it goes well with all the basic colors and nature outside the window.

Walls may have wood paneling, decorative plaster, paint, or breathable moisture-resistant wallpaper that is resistant to moisture. It is important that the materials are not flammable. In terms of design, the design depends on the direction. So, for example:

Unlike city apartments, where the ceilings are best made simple and smooth due to the small area and height of the rooms, in country houses they are most often decorated with wooden ceilings. They can be natural or dyed in a contrasting color. nine0003

The floor is usually made of wood, but in some areas it can be stone, stoneware or tile. Ceramics is strong, durable, easy to clean and not afraid of dirt, so it is suitable for kitchen, hallway and bathroom. The tile can be either plain or with a non-contrasting abstract pattern. For example, a broom or patchwork looks very beautiful and original.

Vintage items will fit perfectly into the rustic style: whether it's a grandmother's legacy or products from flea markets and bulletin boards. There is no need to chase trends here, on the contrary, every thing in the house has its own history and keeps memories. The furniture is mostly dark shades, but in Provence it can be all the same pastel colors and white. Forms are quite simple, large, even massive products are welcome that will fill the space and create a solid feeling. nine0014 Social networks of designer Jessica Buckley
