(Image credit: Paul Massey / Simon Brown / Chris Snook)
Lighting trends ranging from overhead pendants, elegant sculptural shapes and styles and bespoke fittings, these are just some of the lighting trends our experts have predicted will set the design world alight for 2022.
Lighting is an essential component to a successful design scheme yet is so much more important in wintertime, when the days are shorter and we spend far more time indoors than usual.
Thanks to the pandemic, our focus has been drawn into our homes and we're acutely aware of how important it is for our homes to be both comfortable and beautiful. So while everything – including lighting – needs to have a purpose, it also needs to look good.
Lighting trends 2022
We asked a panel of lighting experts and interior design insiders on what they expect the biggest lighting trends to be in 2022. So read on to discover what is set to brighten our lives next year and beyond. ..

'2022 will see dining and living room ceiling lighting ideas becoming the focus of rooms rather than being merely functional. There will be elegant and extravagant light fittings coming through for every style, from contemporary to cottagecore,' explains Valentina Gori, the lighting expert at Smart Lighting Industries, lighting expert at Smart Lighting Industries.
'Thoughtfully placed, cleverly designed and carefully crafted ceiling lights will transform rooms. Lighting will become a starting point for design rather than being left until last.'
“Don’t be afraid to go bold with your ceiling lighting,' Valentina continues, 'larger spaces can take more daring pieces but don’t shy away from unconventional light fittings in smaller spaces, especially if you dial back some other design elements.'

'Table lamps with sculptural shapes and bold designs turn your lamps into pieces of art, providing interest even when the lamp is turned off,' continues Martin Waller.
'Use pairs of lamps to accentuate a beautiful sideboard or console table, or frame a larger piece of furniture such as a sofa or bed.
'Floor lamps are dutiful and elegant and can be placed next to an armchair or sofa to create a comfortable reading spot. Or light up that dark, forgotten corner of your hallway with a statement design to breathe new life into your home.'
3. Opt for artful ceiling lights

'You don't light for the light, you light for shadows,' says Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin. 'As the darker evenings draw in, it’s time to look for new ways of lighting the corners of our homes that have become accustomed to the lingering sunlight of the warmer months.
'Artful ceiling lights and thoughtfully placed lamps can transform a room into a cozy sanctuary in which to hibernate through the winter. Ceiling lights create a focal point in a space, while metallic details will reflect and bounce the light around the room to dazzling effect.'

'Choose bold designs featuring sculptural shapes, interesting texture or colored glass to make as style statement, even when the light is switched off,' concludes Martin Waller.
'Think of your lamp as an art piece or sculpture, like a design-led finishing touch. A light is a good way to throw surprise in a room, to merge modern with traditional.'
5. Take a symmetrical approach

Symmetry is an interior design trick used to create smart-looking rooms – and it's perfect for lighting trends.
For a classic look, try taking a symmetrical approach to lighting. ‘A great way to achieve this is to place two lamps either side of a mirror or a piece of art,’ says Louise Wicksteed, design director for Sims Hilditch. ‘The resulting aesthetic is one of well-distributed elegance.’
6. Light up your space with color

Color is back in a big way for lighting trends in 2022. For a colorful look, follow the lead of Kit Kemp, creative director of Firmdale Hotels. Her well-honed eye for cleverly mixing unexpected yet uplifting hues and folk art patterns follows through to her lighting choices, which embrace pairings and mismatched bases.
7. Increase your interest in bedroom lighting
With the trend for spaces to relax and unwind in becoming more prominent and important in interiors post-pandemic, ambience is key with lighting playing a crucial role in helping to set the mood and surrounding atmosphere.
To this end, lighting for bedrooms is taking a more important role, with eye-catching central pendants a focal point in themselves, even unlit, and shapely bedside lamps creating the perfect, low-lit atmosphere.
8. Layer lighting in your home office
With more of us than ever working from home, more thought is being given to how we light our home offices and work spaces – and one trend to emerge for lighting in 2022 is a new-found love of traditional workmanship and styles.
This Abercrombie table lamp (above) by Jim Lawrence is a case in point. It has been designed with a heritage look and is as handsome when it is turned off as when it is switched on.
The traditional spun brass shade and base are matched with a contemporary steel stem and exposed braided cable to create an eclectic effect. Perhaps you picked it up at a French flea market? No one need ever know.
'If you are working from your living space, use different types of lamps to create the right environment,' advises Will Law, Partner & Home Design Stylist at John Lewis. 'In the day, opt for LED task lighting, which is bright and white – and you could even supplement this with a SAD lamp on darker days.'
'In the evening,' continues Will, 'turn these off and transition to diffused lighting – either shaded lamps, or designs that have warm, frosted bulbs, as these will give a cosy glow to the room.'
9. Show of wall art with light fixtures
High-value (be it in real terms or personal) art needs to be treated with careful consideration when it comes to lighting – especially if the aim is to make it a standout feature of the room. ‘Lighting a picture has the double advantage of showing off the work and reflecting light back into the room,’ says interior decorator
Nicola Harding, who designed this scheme. She chose a wall color with a lacquer finish to reflect natural light; the artificial light above stands in place during darker hours. ‘That reflected light is more atmospheric than something that lights the whole room. I also enjoy playing around with wall lights that weren’t specifically designed as picture lights. Anything with an articulated arm can work.’
10. Plan to perfect for a bespoke option
2022 will be the year for bespoke and commissioned lighting schemes.
When commissioning bespoke joinery, ask the carpenter to make allowances for internal wiring from the start. This will allow for some lights to be built into the unit, removing the need for trailing wires from standalone lamps or wall lights, resulting in a cleaner finish.
Interior decorator Sarah Brown commissioned this pretty bespoke shelving painted in a pale pink gloss and with tongue and groove detailing for a sitting room in London. ‘An interesting room is made up of many layers that allows the eye to travel,’ she says. Sarah added decorative flourishes to the lighting by using patterned lampshades on the sconce and the mantelpiece lamp.

For something so integral to our homes, lighting is often not talked about in the same way decor or other foundational elements of a room are, and in some cases, it's altogether neglected. The fixtures a house or apartment comes with might suffice, but it's hard to argue that a sleek pendant or an on-theme chandelier can't beat the infamous flush-mounted ceiling lights or basic recessed lights found in most homes.
In 2022, lighting trends are looking more brilliant than ever and there is something for everyone and every room, from flashy, in-your-face chandeliers to subtle lamps and bulbs that gently envelop a room in light. Here is how experts are visualizing these trends and key takeaways for actually incorporating them into your own space.
Oversized and the Center of Attention
Jessica Harris, designer and manager of production design at Living Spaces, believes that lighting is a surefire way to make a space feel new again. "One fun way to do this in 2022 would be to add an oversized chandelier," she explains. "This is a great, affordable refresh to a room or entryway that will be noticed by guests right away.”
This speaks to the point, too, that chandeliers are no longer just reserved for dining rooms or for hovering over a foyer—there can be a space for them in a variety of different settings. It's just a matter of picking out a fitting selection.

Unexpected Matches
Some styles, no matter how different, are a harmonious match when paired together. Amy Leferink of Interior Impressions gives the example of more timeless silhouettes being created with modern finishes and materials when it comes to lighting trends in 2022. This is even a great solution for indecisive decorators who can't choose between two (or more) looks.
"I love the idea of taking an old-world design element like a chandelier, and modernizing it, the way that you see here in this wood bead chandelier," Leferink says. "It is the perfect contrast between traditional and modern, and creates a unique spin on a classic."

Linear Lighting
Long lines and simplified silhouettes will be replacing more intricate and complicated designs in the new year. Though ornate chandeliers and bolder options still have their place, this simplified look is a refreshing change that many may be searching out.
"Linear lighting fixtures skew more contemporary in their design," explain Oshri Adri and Jillian Dahlman Bhatia, co-founders of Adri + Dahlman Interiors. "Linear lighting also offers the perfect scale for dining rooms with rectangular tables or kitchen islands with one pendant light. In addition, linear lights provide a more seamless look as they require one lighting fixture to complete a space.

Fun Little Touches
Jamie King from JLK Interiors predicts that "unique and fun finishes" will be popular in terms of lighting come 2022: "My personal favorite style is a metal, whether it be bronze or gold or nickel—it adds an elegant yet industrial component to the room," she says. "I also think having fun with the light bulbs is a great way to change the look of the fixture.”
Spiral filament, flame tip, or even colored bulbs are a fun way to spice up lighting fixtures you may not want to replace fully. This is a fantastic solution, too, for adapting the same lamp or chandelier to different rooms' themes.

Subtle and Gentle Lighting
On one end of the spectrum sits statement lights, but on the other are those gentle fixtures that blend into a room, diffusing it with a subtle light that still makes a drastic difference in the atmosphere and overall look.
Designers from ALine Studio predict lights that "melt" into spaces will reign in 2022. "Light, open, and airy is how we want to live now, and having a great light fixture is the way to accomplish that—but one that almost disappears into the space to make way for other important design elements, like art or textiles."

Room-Specific Lighting
Jennifer Markowitz of JNR Designs understands that lighting can be difficult to get right, but she says the trick is going room by room. Compartmentalizing rooms makes it easier to shop for lighting and allows a place like the living room or guest bedroom to be outfitted with light fixtures that match their respective color palettes or themes.
"I think in 2022 you will see a lot of seamless integration of lighting that works well with the design of each room," explains Markowitz. "For instance, if you have a coastal vibe going, then perhaps a rattan lamp or simple glass pendants will be the best fit, vs if you have a more traditional space, then you might want to go with sconces or flush mounts. The most important thing is to have fun with it, and make it your own.”

Natural and Raw Textures
Calming spaces more often than not feature some kind of natural texture or theme running through them, and it makes sense. Nature and outdoor areas can be the most rejuvenating places to spend time in, and who wouldn't want their space to reflect that serene energy? Even lighting will be taking part in that concept this year.
"Organic, rattan, wooden beads, wood materials, and natural textures are a trend that give the room a boho chic look," says Jen Pinto, senior designer at Jackson Design and Remodeling. "We can incorporate these types of fixtures in almost any room, including kitchens entryways, living spaces, bathrooms, and more."

Layering Lights
Rather than relying on one source of light, 2022 will be about bringing back the look of layered lighting and will see a resurgence of incorporating multiple fixtures in a room. And while it may sound like a lot of lights, it's a perfect layout for large spaces like living rooms where lamps and overhead lights play important roles for different situations.
"For instance, the chandelier may be the accent lighting in a space, but adding layers of various lighting sources to allow versatility will add depth," explains Jennifer Harris from Allied ASID and Design Lines Signature, who predicts this trend. "This can include recessed lighting, directional art lighting, wall sconces, and accent lamps. Installing dimmer switches and separate controls for each source can allow for a wide variety of moods. ”
10 trends in interior design lighting • Modernus.ru
Trends and principles of lighting of certain premises are constantly changing, the same applies to designer lamps ...
Today, a huge number of glossy magazines are published with beautiful photographs of beautiful interiors. Such magazines can often be found almost everywhere and often we leaf through them in anticipation. But these photographs show not only an interesting design, furniture and decor, do not forget that they also show a lot of original designer lamps, which are an integral element of the interior style. Therefore, you can track not only trends in interior decoration and style, but also global trends in the development of lighting equipment for the home. Namely, what technical and combinational solutions are used today to illuminate certain areas, how new lighting ideas are implemented in general, and where this industry is heading. Let's take a closer look at the general dynamics of the development of lighting devices at the present time, what exactly is in the trend and what will happen in the future, where everything is moving.
Ten trends in the development of modern design lighting
- The use of layered compositions in lighting . If a few years ago the interior was illuminated mainly in the old fashioned way, as we are accustomed to with one or two lamps, today there is a clear movement towards the use of multiple lighting fixtures. That is, this is a Western approach to lighting space, the presence of many light sources more evenly spaced throughout its area. This allows you to make the lighting brighter, if desired, or vice versa, dim it if necessary. Thus, a multi-tiered lighting complex is created, emphasizing the various zones in the room and giving it volume and a soft atmosphere. For example, today not only the central chandelier and sconces are used, but in combination with them also floor lamps, table lamps, spot lighting of individual elements, picture lighting, hidden light sources, LED strips, and so on. And all of these light sources can be controlled by adjusting their brightness or completely turning off individual lamps when necessary.
- Placement of floor and built-in spotlights . This trend has long been seen in indoor lighting, but has recently become increasingly popular. Spotlights are built into either the floor or some other surface to illuminate individual interior elements or divide the room into separate zones. Often such lamps are mounted discreetly, which allows you to get diffused light without the obvious visibility of the light source. This helps to create a special atmosphere in the room and highlight individual zones, place light accents in the right places. The only drawback of using spotlights is the complexity of the system, it must be carefully thought out and planned, to understand exactly where the light sources will be located and what they will highlight. Since such a system is laid down at the design stage and mounted at the initial stages of repair, it must be clearly incorporated into the design project of the future interior design and complement it to the fullest.
- General use of LED lamps . There is a strong feeling that LED lamps have already conquered everything and have practically replaced traditional light sources. And this is not surprising, because they are very energy efficient and have a long service life, while they practically do not heat up, and thanks to the development of technological processes, their cost has become very low. Apparently, indeed, in the very near future we will remember traditional incandescent lamps as something old and archaic, just as reel-to-reel tape recorders or rotary telephones have sunk into oblivion. The only thing to consider when installing such lamps is their color temperature, many do not know about this. Each package indicates the glow temperature in kelvins, these numbers do not mean how much the lamp heats up, the indicator indicates how warmly it glows. The scale starts at 2700°K, which corresponds to the yellowish light of a conventional incandescent lamp, and goes up, the light becomes whiter and sharper, so take this into account when buying an LED lamp.
- Rotary and movable lighting applications . Such lamps are increasingly taking their rightful place in a modern interior, they make it easy to turn the luminous flux in the right direction at the moment. For example, these are built-in rotary lamps, hanging spot systems, track and cable lighting systems. This freedom of action allows you to easily change the lighting composition of the room without any extra effort, creating new interesting effects and highlighting the desired areas and areas of the room. This makes the interior design much more interesting, regardless of the chosen style, by directing the light fluxes to another place, you can achieve a completely new perception of the design of the room without spending any money and time. This moment makes such systems so popular today among interior designers and finishers. Such mobile systems are ideal for rooms with a complex configuration.
- Niche and recess lighting . In modern interiors, you can often find design solutions in the form of niches and recesses, for example, a vase, figurine, clock or any other decorative element can be located there. Undoubtedly such interesting structural elements decorate and expand the space of the rooms, and in order to emphasize the niche and place a slight emphasis on the decor item, an invisible backlight is made with a built-in lamp. This combination gives an impressive effect, diffused light pouring from an invisible source creates an atmosphere of comfort and homeliness, while at the same time emphasizing the decorative decoration of the room. This is, without any doubt, an interesting design find, which, of course, has been used for quite a long time, but with the development and miniaturization of LED lamps, it has become widely used. An additional light source is added unobtrusively, giving an additional light level.
- Various lighting combination . If some ten or fifteen years ago, almost without exception, only incandescent lamps were used everywhere, today, due to trends in energy saving and cheaper alternative lighting sources, they give way to modern lamps. Their cost is reduced, efficiency, compactness and service life are increased, so that today the usual incandescent lamps have practically gone down in history and you will not find them anywhere. They have been replaced by combinations of LED, halogen lamps, LED strips and fiber optic systems, which perform their function very successfully. Therefore, in a modern interior, you can often see compositions from these types of lighting. They give a luminous flux of different warmth and intensity, and therefore are used depending on the task that needs to be solved in a particular place. For example, LED lamps are used for spot illumination, LED strips and fiber optic systems for hidden illumination of a section, and halogen lamps for general illumination and focus creation.
- Widespread use of hidden lighting . Another fashionable modern trend in the development of interior lighting. The light source is mounted in such a way that it is not visible, but only a soft diffused light flux is visible. For such solutions, LED strips and fiber-optic systems of flush mounting are used, they are usually mounted in inaccessible places, for example, behind furniture elements or along their upper edge, on wall shelves or multi-level ceilings with special hidden niches. Such lighting gives a soft diffused light flux, which allows you to create an atmosphere of coziness and comfort in the room. Typically, such solutions are additional to the main lighting and turn on and off separately from the main lights. This allows you to increase and decrease the intensity of lighting if necessary, for example, turn on the main lighting when working or receiving guests, and leave only additional lighting during rest.
- Light intensity and brightness adjustment . The use of dimmers that allow you to adjust the brightness at will is one of the most fashionable trends and this is not surprising. This device allows you to easily change the level of lighting in the room, and this, in turn, makes it possible to easily change the light composition in the room at will. The impetus for the widespread use of this technology was the development and cheapening of special LED lamps that support dimmer operation. The advantages of such systems are obvious, they not only allow you to easily change the brightness anywhere in the room, but also significantly save energy and increase the life of the lamps, while such devices are easily integrated into the increasingly popular "smart home" technology. If all this is automated, then lighting control occurs either according to a predetermined program or using a special remote control, which makes it even easier to control the intensity of lighting in the house and increase comfort.
- Application of small mobile light sources . No less popular today is the use of such lamps, both powered by a common network and autonomous light sources are used. They allow you to easily and very quickly highlight the required area of the room. Thanks to this, it is possible to change the light composition in the room at least every day, depending on the situation, it is clear that with the change of light sources, the overall perception of interior design also changes a lot. This solution is suitable for active creative individuals who love novelty and often change the environment, because with the help of such mobile lamps you can almost completely change the atmosphere in the room without any cost and time.
- Use of colored lamps as decorative elements . Basically, the emergence of this trend in lighting design has spurred the rapid development and reduction in cost of LED strips and fiber optic systems, because they are used. Due to the fact that these systems are quite flexible and allow you to arbitrarily change the color of the light flux, it became possible to create very interesting and unusual light combinations, which was immediately used by interior designers. For example, we can see such solutions in the form of hidden colored lighting of multi-level ceilings or creating a flashing effect of the starry sky on the ceiling. You can also see the same interesting effects in a teenager's room or children's room. In general, this technology has very wide possibilities and for sure we will see a lot of unusual solutions implemented using it.
Summing up, we can say that in the matter of lighting at home, technologies are developing very quickly, new unusual solutions are appearing and it is quite real that in a couple of years all of the above will already become commonplace, and we will discuss new original ideas of restless designers and designers.

The Russian company Centrsvet.ru has opened a new showroom in Moscow. On this occasion, we asked the designer of the brand Kirill Koval to "enlighten" us on the topic of the latest trends in the world of lighting.
- The Russian brand Centrsvet.ru appeared in 2005. The company is engaged in the development and creation of various lighting devices, from lamps to lighting systems.
- Thanks to their minimalist form, all Centrsvet.ru models are perfectly combined with each other.
- Light installations created by Centrsvet. ru, annually participate in international exhibitions of architecture and design, such as ARCH Moscow and Moscow Design Week.
The new salon Centrsvet.ru is located on two floors and consists of three large showrooms.
The new salon Centrsvet.ru is a two-storey space with spacious showrooms. The interior turned out to be very consonant with the collections of lamps presented in it: monochrome, minimalist and very modern.
All lighting fixtures are grouped into separate expositions that demonstrate the possibilities of using each model as clearly as possible.
Kirill, why does Centrsvet.ru prefer exclusively black and white colors and minimalist forms?
Well, first of all, black and white are colors that go well with any color palette. Sometimes we use gold and silver because those colors have the same versatility. This approach allows us to organically fit our objects into a variety of interiors. In the modern world, the lamp has become an independent architectural element, with which you can change and transform the space. In our salon, we tried to show all the expressiveness that light is capable of, how to work with it, how to create various lighting effects. Returning to the question of the minimalist form, I will say that, judging by the latest trends, lamps are generally becoming smaller. Today they should be almost invisible, but at the same time give out a large amount of light.
And does Centrsvet.ru follow these trends?
Of course. One of our latest innovations is the Vader model. It's just a strip built into the ceiling. It is not visible, but at the same time it is able to flood the entire wall with light, it will seem that the light penetrates the interior from the outside. By the way, we have reduced many of the existing models.
