Its founders realized that as we’ve become accustomed to living our lives indoors — from our homes to our offices and the commutes in between — we’ve forgotten how important quality time outdoors can be.

2022 outdoor furniture trends to watch

In 2020 and 2021, people fell in love with the outdoors again, spending more and more time in their outdoor spaces and investing in making them as comfortable as possible.

But what outdoor furniture trends will take off in 2022?

We asked Lindsay Schleis, Vice President of Business Development for Polywood, and her predictions for the year ahead are here.

Alfresco dining is here to stay, and we'll see more people investing in making their outdoor space feel more like an indoor living room. "Outdoor dining was a huge seller, and we forecast consumers will continue to love their outdoors by adding lounge pieces to relax upon when not dining," she says. "Whether it be a traditional sofa configuration or a modular collection, trends are focused on lounge furniture and accessories."

POLYWOOD Latitude Sofa

Consumers are also becoming more conscious of what they spend money on, and Schleis believes sustainability will have a "huge influence" on purchase decisions.

And when it comes to color, Schleis believes that blue tones and shades will find their place in our outdoor spaces. "Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams colors of the year for 2022 have blue undertones. Shades of blues offer both comfort and solace and will be a huge trend for 2022," she explains.

What to look for in a high-quality outdoor furniture

So what should you look for in great outdoor pieces?

There's no one-size-fits-all way to define "best." It depends on your own unique sense of style and budget. There are a few things you should always look out for, though:

Outdoor furniture industry expert Bill Ferris advises that you pay close attention to product photographs, especially if you're buying from online retailers.

"Patio furniture brands invest in high-quality photography. Most of the time, online shoppers don't have a chance to check out products in person, so the imagery on a website is critical. The best manufacturers provide shots of their products from various angles, in multiple colors, up close, and in different outdoor settings," he says.

Ferris also recommends diving into the product specs and documentation listed on a brand's website.

"High-end outdoor furniture brands pay attention to the details. Review spec sheets and instructions. Are they clear and comprehensive or confusing and general? The best manufacturers know that proper assembly, cleaning, and care ensure that their products are long-lasting," explains the Decor Interiors founder.

Outdoor and Patio Furniture FAQs

When is the best time to buy outdoor furniture?

"Any holiday is a great time to pay attention to online sales and great promotions," says Betsy Moyer, Co-Founder and Interior Designer at Retreat. "Since outdoor furniture is so seasonal in nature, we like to keep an eye out for Memorial Day sales to kick off the season with new outdoor collections. And of course, Labor Day, the last great sale holiday before much of the nation is headed into winter and retailers are trying to move final inventory. "

"The best time to buy your outdoor furniture to ensure you have everything you need for summer fun in the sun is to buy during the fall and winter months," adds Dufresne. "Lead times for delivery are much shorter since demand is lower and more options will be available so you can get exactly what you want."

What is the best fabric for outdoor furniture?

When choosing the fabric for your outdoor furniture, "you want to make sure it is a high-performance material that will withstand the sun, wind, and moisture," says Dufresne. "Two of my favorites are Sunbrella and Perennials. They offer a large variety of styles that will last through many summer seasons with the proper care."

Moyer is another fan of Sunbrella. "The performance fabric market has come a long way in time, and I'm sure there are great competitors out there now, but Sunbrella seems to own the market," she says.

It's not just the fabric you need to think about. You should also put some thought into the materials used to make the furniture. "The most common materials are wood, metal, or synthetic materials like plastic or resin," explains Dufresne. "Each has its own pros and cons, but the ultimate gauge is what will last longest in your particular outdoor environment. By far the easiest to care for and most cost-effective furniture choices these days are made from man-made materials that can withstand the most outdoor wear and tear."

What are the best tips for caring for outdoor furniture?

Once you have your furniture, caring for it correctly will help it last longer and look fresh and clean season after season. Here are some pro tips from experienced designers Betsy Moyer and Megan Dufresne.

"Depending on your climate, the best thing always is going to be cover or stow away in inclement weather," says Moyer. "We live in Sunny Southern California where outdoors are as good as in for much of the year, but I still prefer not to let my seat cushions sit exposed in the heavy sun and occasional rainfall when they aren't getting much play. I recommend a large watertight storage trunk off to the side for smaller cushions and invest in furniture covers specific to your pieces."

Dufresne also advises investing in high-quality furniture covers and having a waterproof storage container to hold outdoor pillows and cushions when not in use to keep them clean, dry and prevent mold and mildew. "If possible, bring your furniture pieces into a shed or garage to keep them out of the elements during the off-season," she adds.

Buying advice: how to choose the best outdoor furniture

Before you start shopping for the best outdoor furniture, it's a good idea to spend some time thinking about how you ideally – and realistically – want to use your outside space.

To help you make a wise investment, we've broken some key considerations make note of below.

Choose outdoor furniture that suits your lifestyle

It may sound obvious, but the best outdoor furniture for you will be furniture that suits your lifestyle. There's no point investing in a cute-and-compact bistro table and chairs if you regularly entertain large numbers for example.

In fact, if you do love entertaining then you might want to opt for a large trestle table that has room to accommodate plenty of guests or a spacious sectional sofa and armchairs that give everyone plenty of room to relax.

If the backyard is the place you retreat to for some quiet rest and relaxation, consider a comfortable chaise lounger, take a cue from our front porch ideas and invest in one of the best Adirondack chairs for some secluded seating, or group a small number of outdoor chairs together to create a more intimate seating area.

If you prefer to gravitate towards the pool, then easily maneuvrable chaise loungers and quick-drying water-resistant fabrics will be paramount – our pool ideas page can give you some inspiration for luxury poolside styling.

What's the most durable outdoor furniture?

When outdoor furniture shopping it's important not to get seduced by price or aesthetics alone. A bargain purchase can fast become far more expensive than it originally seemed – and a dream purchase lead to disappointment – if it doesn't weather more than one season. So it pays off in the long-term to do a little research before you buy.

To help decode the mysteries of long-lasting patio furniture, we asked the experts in our 'is outdoor furniture weatherproof?' feature. Their answers will help you to choose the best outdoor furniture materials for your environment – whether that's sun-baked, wet and windy, or a mixture of all the elements.

How to arrange outdoor furniture

You'll also want to consider size and scale before you start outdoor furniture shopping to make sure your chosen design fits comfortably within the space you have available.

If your backyard is on the smaller side, check measurements carefully to ensure your patio furniture doesn't overwhelm the area. Just like when choosing the best couch for a living room, you want to have plenty of space to walk around your seating. If necessary mark out the dimensions of your potential patio furniture with masking tape to get an idea of the scale.

This applies to larger backyards too. You don't want a seating area to feel lost within a larger space, so you need to choose furniture that works with the scale of its surroundings.

If you have a larger patio then outdoor furniture can also be a useful zoning tool. Consider what areas you want to create – maybe a dining space next to the outdoor grill, comfortable chaise loungers or corner sofas around the hot tub, or a group of seating positioned around a particularly impressive view of the garden.

Whatever size space you're working with, adding one of the best outdoor rugs underfoot will help to anchor your furniture, grounding your seating to create a dedicated relaxation or entertaining zone.

To create the ultimate backyard living space you'll also want to consider shade. As much as we might love the sun shining, you can get too much of a good thing. Some outdoor furniture comes with built-in parasol holders, but, if not, a freestanding patio or cantilever umbrella is a good shade solution. You'll find a selection of the top buys in our guide to the best patio umbrellas.

And, of course, for more outdoor styling tips, our backyard ideas and small backyard ideas pages hold plenty of inspiration, plus if you're primed for a sale bargain, then keep an eye on our patio furniture deals page which will alert you to the best brand discounts each season.

Easy way to add Pantone 9 Color of the Year0002 Design news

Novelties of outdoor furniture: metal, wicker, unusual shapes and colors.

Needless to say, we do not turn to outdoor furniture very often. The more valuable are the rare warm days when it can come in handy. With the approaching summer coming up, we've rounded up some of the most outstanding outdoor furniture pieces from the range.

    Hermès

Karumi bench made from bamboo. A triangular stool with the same name is already in the collection - it was created by the famous architect Alvaro Siza. And the designer Nigel Peak was also involved in the creation of this banquet - it was he who came up with such a bright striped pillow.

    Alias

The Kobi collection, designed by Patrick Norge, did not originally include outdoor furniture. But this year, two items have been added to the lineup: a bar stool and a chair. The entire collection is designed in a minimalist style, and outdoor furniture is no exception. The chair and stool are made of interlaced metal rods covered with white enamel.

    B&B Italia

The Tabour pouffes designed by Nipa Dosha and Jonathan Levien were so popular with customers that B&B Italia decided to make them an outdoor version. Bright objects of irregular shape can serve as both a seat and a table. And in the center of each, oval MDF panels were inserted - they can be used as trays.

    Puffs Tabour, B&B Italia.

    Extremis

This umbrella is called Acacia for a reason – when creating it, Extremis designers were inspired by the African savannah, namely acacia trees, whose crowns resemble the resulting object. The umbrella rotates in all directions and, despite its modest size, creates a large shade from the sun. But even when the sun goes down, it can be useful to you - there is a built-in LED lighting module inside.

    Gervasoni

The spacious INOUT 629 sofa resembles a nest - everything to ensure you have a great afternoon. The sofa is hand woven from rattan and the cushions can be easily removed for the night.

    Kenneth Cobonpue

Zoey's rocking chair was designed to be placed at the edge of the sea and gently rocked by the waves themselves. But in general, the designer suggests not being limited to the street area and boldly put such an armchair in the living room.

    Marni

The La Vereda furniture collection by Marni is the most colorful outdoor furniture of the recently held i Saloni in Milan. The objects were created by Colombian craftsmen and sing of tiny settlements (las veredas). These "communes" are small collections of houses where all the inhabitants share their skills with each other. The creators of this collection of furniture used the ancient traditional techniques of weaving and preparing raw materials, passed down from father to son, from generation to generation. Well, the Marni designers were already responsible for the bright colors.

The company believes that the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces have been erased for a long time, therefore, appropriate furniture should be invented - such that it does not contrast strongly with the furnishings of the rooms. This year's collection, newly designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, is just that.

    Sofa, Minotti.

    Yamakawa

Yamakawa uses the world's finest rattan from Sumatra, Sulawesi and Kalimantan. Designed by designer Hisanobu Tsujimura, the Sobacocho collection is understated, yet lets you see the many different shapes that can be woven from raw materials such as rattan.
