Tips and Advice for Buying A Sofa
Find the Right Type of Sofa for Your Home
A new couch is one of the most exciting pieces of furniture to buy, but it can also be a stressful experience. So stressful that trying to buy a new couch led to Darryl Sharpton and his wife, Jessica, to found their own sofa brand, Albany Park.
Now you don't have to go as far as the Sharpton's and build your own brand to find the perfect couch. But as a starting point, it can really help to narrow down your search and decide on the type of couch you'd like to buy.
Here's a quick breakdown of some of the most popular couch types:
Sectional Sofas
A sectional is made up of at least two pieces (or sections) that combine to create L or U shaped sofas.
The Park Sectional by Albany Park"They are extremely popular right now mostly because of their versatility and configuration options," Allison Thibault, principal designer at Kaleidoscope Design Studio told Living Cozy. "They also come in a wide variety of upholstery and price ranges, making them appealing to most buyers."

Deep Seated Sofas
Sometimes you just want a bit more space to put your feet up and relax, and that's exactly what deep seated couches were designed for. The average seat depth is around 28-32" and anything over 34" is considered deep-seated.
The Lemieux et Cie Renan Sofa has 41" deep seats“Sofas with shallow seats are best for those that prefer to sit upright. Deeper seated sofas are better for when you want to lounge out or curl up,” says Andra DelMonico, a home design expert from Next Luxury. “Since most of us prefer to lounge while binging our favorite show, deep-seated sofas are growing in popularity.”

Loveseats
A loveseat is simply a small sofa designed to seat two people, and it's the perfect type of sofa for small spaces and couples. Many loveseats will also come with neat features from reclining options to pull out beds and even built in end tables.
The Burrow Range 3-Piece Sectional Lounger"We love to place loveseats in small living spaces," says Kendall Severson owner of Interior Design Partnership. "Velvet loveseats and settees look incredibly sophisticated in a rich velvet fabric or a bold pattern," she adds.

Sleeper
Sleepers are couches that double up as beds. Sometimes they will include a fold out mattress whereas other times the sofa back can lay flat to make a bed.
Flipside 86'' Sleeper Sofa Bed"Practical comes to mind especially for that extra guest room, hobby room, or home office," says Vera Jaye. "This multi-use piece of furniture is easy to open and close for those tight-fitted rooms and now come in a variety of styles from traditional to modern."
Convertible
One of the most versatile types of couch, a convertible can be transformed into a number of configurations and can often be converted into a bed.
The Toggle Convertible Couch"I love selecting these for my clients homes because they are so versatile," says interior designer Keri Feeney. You can utilize it as a traditional sofa, as a trundle, a queen bed or just to lounge watching a movie with your feet up."
Popular Sofa Styles
Here's a quick breakdown of some of the most popular couch styles:
Mid-Century Modern
The Sven SofaMid-century modern is one of the most popular sofa styles around right now. Defined by clean, curved lines, and tapered legs, the mid-century modern style has been popular since the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965).

When is the Best Time to Buy a Sofa?
So when is the best time to buy a sofa? When we asked sales and furniture experts about the best times to buy, here's what we learned:
The best time to buy furniture is during the late winter months of January and February just before the launch of new furniture and summer months like July and August as many retailers will offer end-of-summer sales.
“To be honest there's always a sale of some sort in the furniture and furnishings industry,” says Sherri Monte, founder of Seattle based interior design firm Elegant Simplicity. “But when it comes to the interior of your home steepest sales often exist just before the launch of new furniture.”
And what's the best holiday sale of the year?
Early in the year, many retailers offer discounts on furniture when new styles are coming in. So sales offer a great way to move older stock as the new styles come in. This means that Presidents Day (in February) is often one of the best holiday weekends to shop the sales and buy discounted furniture.
“With over a decade as an interior designer, we are big believers in the President's Day sales,” says Monte.
Sofa Buying Tips from the Pros
It's a big commitment to buy a new couch, so we asked some professional interior designers for some tips on what you should look out for:
1. Look for a quality frame
"Solid Kiln Dried Hardwood or High Quality Plywood for a
structurally sound piece that will stand the test of time. Kiln drying
hardwood removes 90-95% of the moisture in the wood. This helps prevent
warping and bowing over time," says Natasha Nicolaou from NatNico Designs.
2. Check cushion firmness and materials
"Firmer seats will feature high-density foam cushions, often wrapped in Dacron or batting that adds extra padding. The higher the density, the firmer the feel of the foam. Low-density foam is regarded by manufacturers as foam with a density of 1.8 and below. Softer seats will feature a blend of foam, fiber and down feathers. Down is exceptionally plush," advises Jessica Harris, Production Designer from Living Spaces.
3. Search for a manufacturer warranty
"A sofa made from good construction will automatically come with a warranty without having to purchase one, manufacturer who provide warranties are confident in their product and you can be too," says Christina Halasz from Halasz Designs.
4. Pay attention to the measurements
"Be sure to note not just the overall height, width and depth of the sofa but
also note the arm height. If you have a tight squeeze and you have a
tuxedo style sofa, where the arms and the back are the same height, it adds to the challenge of turning a corner. Find out whether or not the feet are removable. Those few inches can make all the difference in the world," says Arelene Lord, Principal Designer at Lord Designs.
5. Think about how you want to use the room
"The room's function is a major deciding factor when deciding on a sofa. If it's going to be used as a theatre or media room, relaxed soft cushion backs would be the route to go, whereas in a formal living room you’ll want a more fitted and tighter look which feels more put together and polished," says Bre Hance, Founder and CEO of InHance Interiors.

- Anatomy of sofas: what are the parts of the sofa called
In most cases, when choosing a sofa, it is on its outer part that all attention is collected. When buying a new product, we mainly focus on the color and fabric of the upholstery, its comfort and softness. But in order to choose a truly high-quality sofa that will serve you faithfully for many years, you need to know what its design looks like and what parts it consists of. The more reliable all the elements are, the longer the life of the product will be.
What the sofa is made of
We all know the basic components of furniture. such as back and seat. But what, for example, is the name of the side of the sofa and what else does the upholstery hide underneath? Let's figure it out.
The main components of the sofa are:
- armrest - made of various materials, most often it is natural wood or chipboard, but there are also armrests made of metal. Some models of furniture have soft armrests, they are sheathed with upholstery. The best choice would be armrests made of durable materials, where the base is wood and the upholstery is leather;
- upholstery - can be fabric or leather. Leather upholstery is considered the most practical and durable, but at the same time the most expensive. A good choice can be a blended fabric in which natural and artificial fibers are intertwined;
- special layer consisting of batting or synthetic winterizer;
- filler - there are different fillers, foam rubber is most often used for sofas, but it is worth considering for what purpose you will use the furniture. If it will act as an extra bed, then it is better to opt for independent springs - they are very strong and durable, and also provide an orthopedic effect;
- polyurethane foam padding - this is used to create additional cushioning, as well as to evenly distribute the weight. This is another way to provide the sofa with an orthopedic effect;
- material that prevents friction and the occurrence of unnecessary sounds, it can be felt or burlap;
- frame - like the armrest, it can be made of natural wood, metal or chipboard, this is one of the most basic elements of the sofa, the shape of the furniture, its strength and durability depend on it. Experts do not recommend saving on the frame, so it is better to choose natural wood or metal. It is worth noting that the metal frame is very heavy, and the wooden frame is the most expensive, chipboard is the cheapest option, but if it is not laminated and coated with a special protective varnish, then it can be hazardous to health;
- interlining is a non-woven fabric that is placed under the bottom of the sofa;
- rail for rollers - most often made of wood or metal, located at the bottom of the laundry box;
- box for linen and other small things - usually almost every model has this function;
- pull-out element - available for convertible sofas that convert into a bed.
This design is generic. It is worth considering that different models may have their own characteristics. Consider which of the structural elements can affect the durability of furniture.
Structural elements affecting the life of the furniture
Let's take a look at the most important components of a sofa. These include:
- Frame. This element is the basis of the sofa. It depends on him how often the sofa can be used and what the permissible load may be, depending on the weight. It is recommended to choose the most durable material for its manufacture. Of course, chipboard will be the cheapest option, but it will not last as long as natural wood and metal. In addition, there is a high risk of breakage during a heavy load. When choosing a tree, you need to opt for such durable species as oak and beech. Softwoods will be slightly cheaper, but they are more brittle. When buying a new product, check the frame for knots, because they can lead to a quick breakdown of the product.
- Filler. With the help of the filler, the shape of the furniture is created. Its elasticity and softness also depend on it. The spring block is considered the best. It can be of two types: Bonnel and independent. Bonnel is slightly less expensive and can produce a squeaky sound over time. Independent springs are considered the most durable and provide an orthopedic effect, but at the same time they are the most expensive.
- Transformation mechanism. Nowadays, the furniture market provides a huge number of sofas with different transformation mechanisms. The choice of the appropriate option depends on how often you plan to transform the sofa into a bed. For frequent use, the eurobook, click-clack, accordion and dolphin are suitable. For use as a guest bed, an American or French folding bed is suitable.
- Upholstery. The appearance of the product depends on the upholstery. In addition, this material must be durable and wear-resistant, otherwise it will quickly become unusable and you will have to pull the sofa. If funds allow, it is better to choose leather or a quality substitute for it. Also popular are chenille, jacquard, tapestry and flock.

Which sofa design is better? Types of sofa frames
Basic structural elements of the sofa
Sofa design provides strength and reliability. When choosing, it is important to pay attention to what parts the furniture consists of. Don't focus only on appearance.
The main elements include the following:
- Armrests. They are made of natural wood, chipboard, metal with soft materials finish. Such models are considered wear-resistant.
- Upholstery. A coating made of natural fabrics and materials is welcome.
- Filler. More often represented by polyurethane foam, which allows you to evenly distribute the weight.
- Spring mesh. Acts as a shock absorber.
- Burlap (felt). Prevents unpleasant sounds of possible grinding.
- Frame. Various materials are used, primarily chipboard or metal.
- Interlining - non-woven material, located under the lower component of the sofa structure.
- Boxes. This is a convenient storage space for bedding.
- Retractable part (required for transformation into a bed).
Items described may vary. The device depends on the model. Depending on the design features, there are:
- fixed;
- modular;
- island.
Stationary sofas cannot be reshaped. In turn, they are straight and angular.
Modular consists of several parts. The owner of such furniture can swap elements and change shape.
Islands are made to organize recreation areas. Designs are convenient to use in offices or living rooms. They will need space, as sofas are installed in the middle of the room. They are not placed along the wall. Sitting on such furniture is quite comfortable, but it is not suitable for sleeping.
Types of sofa mechanisms
The folding mechanism is selected depending on the purpose of operation.
If it is expected that the sofa will be used frequently and unfolded, opt for a book, eurobook or dolphin.
If the model is purchased only for arranging seats, order a monolithic structure (there is no folding mechanism).
Popular options for transformation mechanisms are tango and pantograph. According to the device, they are similar to the book model.
Sofas with mechanisms French, American or Italian folding bed are comfortable and reliable. But each of them has its drawbacks. For example, in the sofas of the Italian folding bed model, niches for storing bedding are not provided.
Sofa frame: what materials is it made of?
Frames are different. What distinguishes them is the material from which they are made. There are such variations:
- Metal frame. Differs in the increased durability.
- Wooden. Choose those who prefer natural materials.
- From plywood and chipboard. Buyers are attracted by the low price and light weight of upholstered furniture.
There are designs of combined types. Choose metal models, but keep in mind that such items are heavy. The lightest are made of plywood or chipboard.
Sofa upholstery: advantages and disadvantages
There are an abundance of upholstery options available today. Each type has some advantages. But it is worth paying attention to the shortcomings.
It is customary to distinguish three main types of upholstery:
- natural;
- synthetic;
- semi-synthetic.
Finishing must be chosen depending on the purpose for which the sofa is purchased. So, fabric with dirt-repellent properties (chenille, matting, velor, teflon flock) is suitable for the living room.
If you need a sofa bed with the functions of a berth, you should give preference to upholstery made from natural fabrics. A rational option would be flock. The material does not cause allergies, does not deform.
Furniture for a children's room should be equipped with natural and wear-resistant upholstery. In addition, it is important that the fabric is easily cleaned of dirt.
All natural materials are poorly cleaned. Use special impregnation.
For the kitchen, it is more convenient to install a sofa with leatherette upholstery. The material does not absorb odors, is easy to clean, has dust and water repellent properties. Tapestry, for example, is not characterized by such qualities.
Furniture upholstered in boucle fabric looks very attractive.
