7 Best Blenders to Buy in 2022, According to Expert Testing

We carefully reviewed this story in October 2022 and stand by our picks selected by the Good Housekeeping Institute. We are currently testing Vitamix blender models side-by-side and will share those testing results soon.

You need a blender that can easily process your ingredients into smooth, creamy perfection if you're whirring up an energizing healthy breakfast smoothie. But that's not all these kitchen staples are good for. Your blender should crush ice for silky smooth frozen cocktails and vegan protein shakes, puree velvety soup in minutes and grind oats for homemade oat milk.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we’ve tested everything from immersion blenders to food processors and more than 100 blenders over the years to find the best high-performance blender models. Our top tested picks include blenders ranging from $80 to $550 from brands that we love including picks from Vitamix and Ninja and models that have personal blending cups with lids for easy portability. These are the best blenders you can buy in 2022, according to extensive testing and in-home use by Good Housekeeping experts.

You can read more about how we evaluate blenders in our Lab — plus everything you need to know to shop for your appliance — at the end of this guide. If you're looking to explore more options, we've also reviewed the viral Beast blender.

How we test blenders

In our recent side-by-side test at the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we tested 25 new blenders. We have tested more than 100 blenders over the years, including numerous immersion blenders and personal blenders, to find the best high-performance models. We test each with the same standardized recipes to see how they stand out among the rest. When we test personal blenders, we adjust the recipes accordingly.

Good Housekeeping/Eva Bleyer

In our most recent test, to see how well blenders could handle hard ingredients, we ground more than 3 pounds of coffee beans, blended nearly 10 pounds of frozen strawberries and pulverized over 650 ice cubes. This photo shows how seven different blenders blended the same strawberry green smoothie recipe very differently.

Good Housekeeping/Eva Bleyer

To help mimic how a home consumer would use a blender, we also make vanilla milkshakes and frozen margaritas. During Lab testing, we weigh the final product and strain it through a mesh sieve to evaluate whether all ingredients are fully blended and whether each grind or puree is uniform.

Good Housekeeping/Eva Bleyer

We also make a broccoli leek soup, if the blender is equipped to blend hot ingredients. A blender must have vents in order to safely blend hot ingredients and you should avoid blending hot liquids in a personal blending cup, which could potentially cause burns upon opening.

Good Housekeeping/Eva Bleyer

If a blender comes with a food processor attachment, we also test that attachment to see how well it performs. We shred carrots and mozzarella, mince parsley, grind parmesan and slice pepperoni and tomatoes.

When testing, we rate the helpfulness of the owner’s manual and evaluate how easy each model is to assemble, use and clean. We also consider how noisy each blender is while operating. Finally, we check how well the blender cups resist staining from tomato sauce that is left overnight. We measure the wear after 14 cycles in the dishwasher.

What to consider when shopping for blenders

✔️ Blades: While it might seem counterintuitive, better-performing blenders do not come with sharp blades (which tend to dull over time). Instead, they come with strong blades that stand the test of time and are able to pulverize just about anything. This also makes them much safer to clean.

✔️ Size: If you don't plan to keep your blender on your countertop, look for a lightweight model. They're more portable but also more likely to skid around on the countertop when in use. If you want to keep your blender on the counter, be sure to consider the height, as some models are too tall to fit neatly underneath kitchen cabinets. If a countertop blender is too big for your kitchen, consider an immersion blender that’s slim and can tackle most of the same tasks.

✔️ Glass vs. plastic carafe: Glass is heavier, but it won’t retain odors or stain as easily as plastic models. Most high-powered blenders do not use glass jars because they're not guaranteed to be completely shatterproof, but if you really want glass, look for one that’s been thermal-shock tested (which means you can blend ice in a canister that's come straight from the dishwasher). Many of our top-performing blenders have jars made of BPA-free Tritan plastic, which can withstand high-speed blades.

✔️ Wattage: Blenders with higher wattage tended to perform better, but this was not always the case: The overall design of the blender is more important in determining performance.

Although blenders are often associated with smoothie making, they're versatile and handy tools in any chef's kitchen. An immersion blender, for example, is well-suited for blending hot food directly into your pot to make soup. In comparison, a personal blender can be a good choice for those looking to take their single-serve blends with them on the go. Finally, full-size blenders can hold much more food than other types of blenders, so they're generally more suitable for large families or professional use. Some even come with additional attachments, like a food processor, which allows you to make coarser chopped food like salsa or knead bread dough.

We've tested over 80 blenders, and below are our recommendations for the best blenders you can buy. You can also check out our picks for the best personal blenders, the best immersion blenders, and the best Vitamix blenders.

The best kitchen blender that we've tested is the Vitamix 5200. This premium blender has fantastic build quality and comes with a long, seven-year U.S. warranty (depending on where you buy it). It includes a 64-ounce jar, a 2-part lid, and a tamper, and it's versatile enough for all kinds of recipes. If you like to make smoothies, it makes a nearly perfectly smooth blend with ingredients like kale and blueberries in just a few minutes. You can add hot ingredients to the jar for recipes like soup and sauce. It easily pulverizes ice cubes, so it's also great for making crushed ice for cocktails or smoothie bowls with frozen fruit.

Its controls are straightforward, with a pulse mode switch and speed dial that gives you lots of control over the blend. It comes with a taller, narrower jar than other Vitamix models, and it's easier to use for thick mixtures like hummus or nut butter since you hardly need to use the tamper. However, it doesn't have any extra features like blending programs or a timer. These features don't necessarily make for a better blend; however, if you like your machine to stop automatically or display the blending time, more expensive 'Ascent' blenders like the Vitamix A3500 come with lots of extra features and perform similarly. The A3500's jar is dishwasher-safe, unlike the 5200's, but both blenders are easy to clean by hand.

The KitchenAid K400 is a worthy option if you don't want to spend that much on a blender. This full-size blender isn't as well-built as the Vitamix A5200 and has a slightly smaller 56-ounce capacity. Its one-year U.S. warranty is also much shorter. However, it's very sturdy and delivers a versatile performance since you can use it to process hot ingredients, blend smoothies free of unprocessed bits, and make snow-like crushed ice.

Unfortunately, processing thick mixtures like hummus is a more difficult task. It can make a smooth blend eventually, but it's a longer, harder process since it doesn't come with a tamper, and you need to stop the blender to scrape the sides of the jar. Otherwise, its design is well-suited for a variety of recipes. It has a good range of speed settings, so you can adjust the blending speed to suit your recipe. There are a few automatic blending programs you can access with the speed dial. The jar and lid are dishwasher-safe, but unfortunately, if you're cleaning them by hand, the lid and non-removable blades take some time to get completely clean.

The Ninja Foodi Cold & Hot Blender is the best mid-range blender we've tested. Once again, the lower price tag represents a step down in build quality. It's not as well-built as the KitchenAid K400 but feels very sturdy. The 64-ounce jar is made of glass, which you may find is less prone to scratches and discoloration than plastic. It's a superb ice crusher and makes very smooth and spreadable nut butter, although it's not as easy to use for that as the Vitamix 5200. It doesn't come with a tamper, but the jar has a two-part lid, so you can pour more ingredients in without stopping the machine. It's very well-suited for processing fibrous ingredients, but if your recipe includes tough additions like kale, it makes a slightly grainier puree than the pricier options on this list.

This blender has a heating element built into the main jar, so you can use it to make hot soup. There are a few blending programs for hot recipes and more common presets like 'Smoothie' and 'Frozen Drink'. However, there are only three speed presets for manual blending, so you have few options for fine-tuning the blending speed compared to the more expensive blenders on this list. It's also a bit louder than the KitchenAid blender. Unfortunately, it's hard to clean the jar because food can get stuck under the non-removable blades. The lid is dishwasher-safe, but you can't put the jar in the dishwasher or immerse it in water because of the heating element.

If you don't use your blender every day or want a budget-friendly option, look at the KitchenAid K400. This blender looks like a smaller version of the KitchenAid K400 and doesn't have as much power, but it's still quite versatile. It also has a smaller 48-ounce capacity, but unless you plan to blend drinks for a party, it'll be big enough for most recipes. It has a good build quality and is small and light for a full-size blender, which is nice if you want to store it in a cupboard. Βlends like broccoli soup or kale smoothies take a little longer to process than a more expensive model like the KitchenAid K400, but it can still power through tough ingredients to make a smooth blend. It's an excellent ice crusher and fairly easy to use to make thicker mixtures like hummus or nut butter.

There are only three preset speed settings, so you don't have a lot of options for fine-tuning the speed. There's a two-part lid for the jar to help with adding ingredients mid-blend, but no tamper is included. Like the K400, it's not the easiest to clean by hand, but the jar and lid are dishwasher-safe. It also comes in several colors, which is a little unusual for a blender. Keep in mind that some color options are more expensive. If you're looking for a cheaper blender, the Oster Pro 1200 is usually available for less than $100. It performs similarly and even comes with a personal jar for smoothies. However, its mediocre build quality is a major downside.

If you're looking for a compact blender and don't need to blend hot ingredients, try the Ninja Foodi Power Nutri DUO. You may want to consider a personal blender if your priority is smoothie-making since it comes with a pair of 24-ounce personal jars with resealable lids. You can use these jars to make fantastic, silky single-serve smoothies with stubborn ingredients like blueberries or seeds. It also makes snow-like crushed ice for frozen drinks like slushies. Its short, compact motor base means it takes up less space than the KitchenAid K150, so you may prefer it if you have a small kitchen, as long as you don't mind its more limited capacity.

It also comes with a 14-ounce 'Smoothie Maker Bowl' intended for thicker mixtures. There are arms inside the jar that you rotate with a knob on top to stir the ingredients as they're blending, making it very simple to process tough ingredients like nuts into smooth, spreadable butter. It's easy to clean by hand, and all the jars and lids are dishwasher-safe. However, since it's a personal blender, it's more limited than the full-size options on this list. It has only one speed setting, so you can't adjust the speed to suit your recipe, and it's not safe to use for hot blending. It's also the loudest blender on this list, so it's unpleasant to stand next to it for more than a minute or two while it's running.

If you blend a lot of soups and sauces, you may prefer an immersion blender like the Ninja Foodi Power Mixer System. While the KitchenAid K150 and the pricier full-size blenders on this list are safe for hot blending, immersion blenders are meant for processing hot ingredients directly in a pot or pan. You don't need to transfer your recipe into a blender pitcher and can store the blender in a kitchen drawer when you're done. This very sturdy model does a great job of making smooth, well-blended purees for recipes like vegetable soup or fruit smoothies. It comes with a 24-ounce beaker you can use for smoothies or small batches of sauce or dip, and it has a lid so you can easily store what you make. It's also very easy to clean by hand, and all its accessories, including the blending arm, are dishwasher-safe.

This model also stands out from other immersion blenders since it comes with two beaters and converts into a hand mixer, so you can use it when you're making cookie dough or cake batter. There's also a whisk attachment for tasks like whipping cream or stirring salad dressing. However, it's not the quietest immersion blender, and like virtually all immersion blenders, it's not as versatile as the full-size options on this list. It's hard to use to make nut butter and can't crush ice.

The blender helps to realize any flights of gastronomic fantasy. I cooked cream soups, nut milk, nut paste with dried fruits, smoothies and juices, cocktails with ice, powdered sugar, buckwheat flour, chicken pate, you can’t remember everything at once. All this in automatic modes and without fear that the engine may burn out from solid ingredients. I put apples with a blender with peel and seeds, they are not felt at the exit. Tomato peel and seeds too. In smoothie mode, you can get a perfectly smooth, delicate texture, and in manual mode, you can leave small pieces.

              Professional mixer (blender)

              - healthy cuisine - green smoothies, shakes from any fruits, vegetables and herbs at your place at any time of the year!

Have you often asked yourself the question “Which vitamins and minerals are better to drink to “feed” the body”? I'm sure yes. I will express my opinion - the best source of this is not pharmaceutical preparations and dietary supplements, but natural freshly squeezed juices and green cocktails. Read two articles on the subject "The Green Cocktail Revolution" and "How to Make a Green Cocktail"

You will need good technique to make them. Such a question of choosing a model of a blender and a juicer stood before me 2 years ago. And having carefully studied all kinds of sites and reviews, I chose the model of the professional blender JTC OmniBlend TM-800 and auger juicer Hurom HU-100 (chrome) The technique has justified itself by 100%, for 2 years of operation there are no complaints, the technique has proven itself perfectly. Moreover, many of my friends and patients have purchased this technique and were satisfied.

Overview of blenders. Best blender 2013

Healthy food practitioners who use blenders almost constantly were asked which blender they consider to be the best and by what parameters. Models of 9 brands were named among the winners0750 JTC Omniblend (Taiwan) , American blenders Vitamix (Vitamix) and Blendtec (Blendtek).

In terms of quality / price, the best blender according to the results of surveys and reviews was awarded to the brand JTC Omniblend .

Vitamix due to sharper knives give a slightly softer consistency when mixing, so they are leaders in quality, but in terms of price / quality ratio, at a price of US $ 850, they are not the most affordable choice for everyday use.

So, why are powerful professional blenders better for everyday use, for basic recipes for tasty and healthy food? How to choose the best blender in its class? What type of knives are best? What blender power is optimal, is 200, 600 watts enough, what is better than 950 watt blenders, why 1.500 watts is not always good?

If you just need to choose a small ordinary blender for half a year at most a year, then it's best to go to any supermarket and ask the consultants which ones break less than the rest. If you would like to seriously understand which blender is best for long-term use, you should first consider professional blenders.

Blenders overview - what do consumers use?

              • Category - "What will you need instead of a blender"

There may be various food processors, coffee grinders, meat grinders, juicers. For example, an old chopper is a Ukrainian food processor from the 90s. With most delicious live recipes, he can not cope. Low power and number of revolutions, unprofessional knife. Verdict "Better than nothing - if possible - replace."

              • Lightweight non-professional blenders

                - submersible manual Brands Philips, Bosch, Brown, Mulinex, etc.
Their plus is the chopper function in a separate bowl, but there is not enough power for normal cocktails. The only advice, if you want to buy submersible ones, is better to take at least 600 watts of power - and it will last longer and cope with a viscous mass, greens better.
Typically 500 watts or less. Low-powered and short-lived blenders.
Literally in half a year, when we just started using ordinary blenders, we burned several of them. These were classic immersion blenders. Alas, they simply do not withstand the normal full load. Sometimes they can beat something, but they are not intended for permanent use.
The only use of such blenders - if you buy WIRELESS battery-powered immersion blenders - for use away from civilization one-time. This is the best way to use immersion blenders.

              • Consumer Grade Stationary Blenders

Power up to 800 Watts. There are good stationary consumer blenders, but initially they are not designed for long-term use. They are already closer to professional ones - at least in terms of price and even beat well. But their minus is either small cups, or an unprofessional knife that cannot cope with solid ingredients, is not suitable for green cocktails (you need good power and a good knife to grind greens to chlorophyll), or low speed power and with viscous mixtures it starts " load" and breakdowns.
So now, for comparison with professional ones, I took a stationary consumer one for the test - I monitor performance - well, almost like a submersible, the good thing is that you don’t have to hold it in your hands, but the result is the same as submersible fans. And also overstrains when you need to cook a lot. Theoretically, a cocktail can also be whipped green if you beat it for a very long time.

                Vitamix, USA
The leader in this field has always been Vitamix, an American blender, but its price in Russia starts from US $850. Expensive, but worth it, as the warranty is 7 years and they usually last for decades.
                Blendtec, USA
Close to Vitamix is the powerful Blendtec professional blender, but at the same cost from US $750 it has programmable modes, which is not bad for professional bars, but rather difficult to master for ordinary users. Programmed via computer.
Some live food professionals in the US consider this blender to be the best in terms of power and functionality (program).

              JTC Omniblend, Taiwan

The main disadvantage of top-class American blenders is their high price (from UAH 6700, US $850). Therefore, a powerful professional Omniblend blender is now being actively sold at a price 2 times lower than the main American top-class models. At the same time, not only is it no worse than the Americans, but in some parameters it is better.

In terms of engine power, quality of knives, bowl, motor durability, professional functions, and the ability to prepare professional recipes, not only is it not inferior, but in some moments surpasses the market leaders.

The overheating protection function is very effective - it is this function that guarantees the durability of the motor for more than 5 years. In the event of a threat of overheating and subsequent breakdown, the motor automatically turns off.

Even in the USA, in the homeland of the leading brands of professional blenders, Omniblend is very seriously pushing the position of leaders, American partners give it the same as for Vitamix 7 years of warranty. Now we can definitely consider that in the category the best-selling and affordable of high-quality professional blenders is the Omniblend.

Assembly JTC Omniblend as well as most of the equipment now, including market leaders, is made in China, but Omniblends are distinguished from Chinese copies by their own ISO-certified factory. JTC itself is located in Taiwan, has been dealing with electronics and household appliances for over 26 years!

What to pay attention to when choosing a blender

In any blender for preparing various recipes, special attention should be paid to the following parameters:

              • Power - the optimal number of revolutions for a professional blender is 30-40 thousand revolutions per second. In terms of revolutions, professional blenders from 20 thousand to 38 thousand revolutions per minute. That's good enough power for all the recipes you need.
The Taiwanese blender has 38k rpm and the motor uses less power than 1.5kw, although it puts out up to 2200w, it uses less than 1000w.
Mid-range professional blenders have at best up to 1000 watts of power, and up to 20 thousand. revolutions torque.
Chinese copies claim 1.5 kW and up to 29 thousand. revolutions.
The fact is that the power in kilowatts does not exactly show the engine power (engine power is more likely to be confirmed by the number of revolutions), but rather the energy consumption, since when taking into account an inefficient engine, kilowatts will simply go into the air. If a blender with a power of 1.5 kW produces only 20 thousand revolutions, this is of course not a very effective option.
              • Professional knives - minimum 4 bladed, preferably 6 bladed two piece. Two-piece knives - the upper part consists of a crusher - a powerful knife that grinds solid ingredients and a lower chopper knife.
This design is optimal both for green cocktails, when you need to grind the leaf cells very finely to release chlorophyll, and for nut mixtures, when the nut is ground like in a coffee grinder. Conventional blenders burn out very quickly if you start using them for nut mixtures. Or you have to first grind the nuts in a coffee grinder. Which just exhausts and discourages cooking. Also, a good knife and power allow you to turn the blender into a flour grinder and a meat grinder (chopper of soaked grains, sprouted, etc.) - since it is very difficult to grind pre-soaked grains with an ordinary blender and in a coffee grinder already unreal.
With powerful blenders, viscous liquids are best ground in pulse mode and also at reduced speeds! It turns out to be a powerful blender and the juice can be squeezed out - just grinding it very finely and squeezing it through gauze or a special cloth.
              • Large cup
1.5-2 liters when you are faced with the task of feeding more than 3 people. For example, Omniblends have 1.5 and 2 liter cups, while a 1.5 liter cup is actually more comfortable and holds more than 1.5 liters, just a glass marked with divisions ends at 1.5 liters. And you can add more. A 2 liter glass has no divisions and its shape is less convenient in my opinion, but it holds more. 1.5 liter glass looks more professional.
A large capacity is a must if you want to eat healthy food with the whole family, or treat friends. Or have a party!
              • Control
Speed control knobs are useful, timers are convenient (but not on Chinese machines - as they create additional factors for breaking electronics), the pulse function is useful when grinding nuts and ice.
              • Warranty
As for the warranty, the Omniblender manufacturer officially gives a 2 year warranty, but the Americans who promote the same blender in the USA boldly give a 7 year warranty on them and they consistently serve this period and more.
