Owners of small outdoor areas can all relate to the struggles that come with the modest square footage: angling chairs just right to get a sliver of sun, bumping knees with your partner while you lean over your meals, your deck becoming a full-blown jungle when you've only added three plants. But leaving outdoor areas bare means you can't fully take advantage of having your own personal space outside.

When it comes to outfitting small outdoor patios with furniture, they pose many of the same challenges as pint-sized interior rooms—the number one dilemma being there is much less space to make it livable and on par with your style. While that may be the case, it's far from impossible. A large outdoor space isn't required for pulling up a chair and enjoying some fresh air or a meal outside.

With the right pieces of furniture, a small patch of grass or concrete slab that you've been giving the evil eye over the past few months can become a comfortable outdoor living area. Take a scroll through this compilation of patio chairs, tables, stools, and sofas that make it completely doable without cramping your style—or your space.

20 Ways to Make Your Tiny Backyard Super Awesome for Summer

do-it-yourself garden furniture in the photo

Each owner of a private house of an urban or country type, summer cottage or personal plot, sooner or later faces the need to improve his territory. And this is not about breaking beds and flower beds, planting trees and shrubs, but arranging comfortable, but at the same time practical areas for recreation, cooking and eating in the fresh air. It’s hard to imagine a landscaped plot without garden furniture, but not everyone can afford to buy one, and it’s much more pleasant to sit on a bench made by yourself or dine outdoors at a table that didn’t cost you a dime. In this publication, we have collected many options for garden furniture that you can make yourself. Possessing only improvised materials, a small set of tools and a great desire to make your site landscaped, comfortable and aesthetic.

In order for garden furniture to appear on your site that can become not only a reliable exterior item, but also a reason for the pride of the owners and the envy of neighbors and guests, you need not so much - waste material, perseverance, a little imagination, labor and effort. In this article you will find examples of making garden furniture from wood, building pallets, used household items.

Choosing the material for making country furniture

In order for hand-made furniture to organically fit into the existing image of a summer cottage or a private courtyard, it is necessary to responsibly approach not only the manufacturing process itself, but also the choice of material. The most versatile and at the same time very malleable material in terms of processing is natural wood. The advantage of wood is that it can fit perfectly into any stylistic direction in the design of the landscape. And this can be achieved through a variety of design options - from massive furniture made from logs to light and elegant products woven from vines or twigs.

The advantage of wood for creating furniture with your own hands is that it has many manifestations. You can create a piece of furniture with minimal material processing in the shortest possible time. For example, ordinary hemp can be turned into stools or small tables-stands. It is enough to make sure that the surface of the new pieces of garden furniture is perfectly hewn and becomes safe for use.

You can create garden furniture from branches and rods ...

or logs and a large beam ...

shops and benches - an integral attribute of a summer cottage

needs even a very small rear courtyard where you can sit down to enjoy the fresh air, watch the sunset or meet the sunrise. Well, on the site of a large family or in the courtyard of hospitable hosts, where companies gather, it is completely necessary to take into account the possibility of seating several people.

One of the easiest ways to create benches and benches is to use a wooden beam and cinder block with square holes. The bench or bench is assembled as a constructor, you do not even need to use any tool or bonding solution, construction adhesive. The advantage of such structures is not only ease of installation, but also portability - you can easily disassemble your piece of garden furniture and move it to another place or put its parts in a shed until the new warm season.

If soft seats and sofa cushions are placed on a bench made of cinder block and timber, then an ordinary hard garden bench turns into a convenient, comfortable sofa.

Combining garden furniture materials, you can increase the strength and improve the appearance of products. For example, together with a tree in one or another modification, metal structures can be used, for example, parts of beds (backs, legs).

Outdoor dining area

Outdoor dining tastes better. Every owner of even a tiny backyard tries to create an environment in which they could have meals outdoors, even if we are talking about short breakfasts. Depending on the needs and size of your family, you can equip a small area for short meals, or install a spacious dining table for receiving guests in the fresh air. It is noteworthy that both options are within the power to implement on their own.

One of the simplest, but at the same time practical ways to organize an outdoor dining group is to make a table, together with benches. The model shown in the photo will require a minimum amount of material, but it will be quite roomy. The only drawback of such a dining group is that if you need to increase the number of people sitting at the table, then you can do this only for 2 seats (you will need chairs or stools).

You can equip a dining area or a segment for short meals (breakfasts and afternoon snacks) according to the type of bar counter. This is easy to do with the help of building blocks and wooden beams or boards. Only stools for such a countertop need to be selected as bar stools, with the appropriate height.

Recreation area in a summer cottage or household plot

Outdoor recreation is associated with different things for everyone. For some, these are gatherings with friends and neighbors, for others, reading on a slightly swaying swing, while others need sunbeds for air baths. For all options for active and not very relaxing, you can make furniture with your own hands, and even from improvised means at minimal cost.

One of the most common ways to create garden furniture for a relaxation area is to use building pallets or pallets. The advantage of such an assembly is its simplicity - the wooden blocks are already formed in part of the future armchairs and sofas. Well, even the owner of a summer house or any other land plot who has not previously held a hammer in his hands can build a coffee table from pallets. Even building glue can be used to fasten the elements.

Another advantage of using construction flights for the manufacture of garden furniture is that you can get the material at a very low price or even free of charge, because we are talking about used products. It will only be necessary to take care of thorough cleaning of surfaces, leveling and slight polishing, impregnation of the material with antiseptics against decay.

Construction pallets can be used to create complete outdoor seating arrangements. It can be a spacious corner complex, composed of a sofa type, comfortable armchairs and a coffee table. It is enough to put soft pillows and seats in armchairs and sofas to set up a living room atmosphere right on a summer cottage or garden plot ...

With the help of wooden pallets, you can equip a zone not only for relaxation, but also for sleeping. A summer bed or just a layer of construction pallets with a mattress is a great opportunity to create a bedroom in the fresh air - take care only of a canopy over the bed to protect from the sun.

It is easy to build a comfortable swing out of old pallets. You can tie them on ropes or chains to the roof of a canopy and gazebo, on a terrace or just under a tall sprawling tree with thick branches.

A little less popular, but at the same time a practical way of arranging a summer cottage garden furniture is the use of building wooden coils. They can be used to make armchairs…

Children's tables for games, creativity or short snacks…

In order to make a table with a stand at the base, you do not need to do anything at all, except for cleaning the surfaces and treating them with impregnations and varnishes ...

The reel table can be equipped with an umbrella and seats arranged in a circle at a comfortable distance from each from a friend…

Another common material for making garden furniture is used wooden barrels. They make very ergonomic chairs, tables and stands.

Storage systems and much more

In addition to seats of various modifications, a summer cottage or a private yard also needs other items of garden furniture. Of course, it all depends on the needs of the owners - someone needs a pencil case for storing tools, others need a table, stepladder or stand, a box for storing a hose or shelves for installing potted plants. We offer several practical and aesthetic ideas that are easy to implement and easy to operate.

It is convenient to use benches, sofas, furniture corners and pouffe chairs with folding seats as storage systems. Inside such furniture, you can store fixtures for rest and meals, as well as the necessary garden tools. In order to increase the comfort level of outdoor recreation, it makes sense to use removable soft seats for benches and sofas. Choose materials that will be easy to wash in the washing machine and provide a respectable rest with minimal effort.

Sunbeds can also act as storage systems. In fact, they are large rectangular boxes, the top of which can rest on a stand and become a back.

DIY garden furniture: materials, ideas, instructions

A hot summer day in the country is best spent in the shade of trees, sitting comfortably on a comfortable garden sofa with a tablet or a paper book. But what if you forgot about garden furniture in the efforts to improve the cottage? The current prices for all these benches, swings and sets of country furniture frankly bite, and it’s a pity to give rather big sums for things that you use at most for a couple of months a year. But do not rush to despair, because you can make comfortable and pretty garden utensils with your own hands. How? That's what we'll talk about now.

Why buy outdoor furniture?

As in any business, in the manufacture of garden furniture, the main thing is motivation. If you really want to make a bench or a table with your own hands, then everything will definitely work out, even if you didn’t know which side to pick up a hammer from before. No need to worry that your furniture masterpiece will look rough, but small flaws will give things a unique look and form an original style. Homemade garden products have many advantages over standard store crafts.

Speaking about the advantages of making a table, benches and other items of garden furniture necessary for the household, do not forget about the possible disadvantages. If you have never worked with your hands before, get ready for the inevitable mistakes and failures. This means that some of the material will have to be spoiled for the sake of gaining experience. Therefore, we advise you to start with the simplest samples and move on to more complex ones as you accumulate skill. In addition, you will need a tool for working with wood and metal.

Tools needed

The quality of work largely depends on the availability of the tool. To work with wood, you can not do without:

To connect the parts, you will need mounting angles, self-tapping screws and other hardware, depending on the chosen design.

If you have to work with metal, then, in addition to the above, you will need a grinder with cutting discs and a household welding machine with electrodes (usually electrodes No. 3 are enough).

In addition, stock up on paint brushes for painting or varnishing finished products.

An important circumstance for the success of the upcoming business will be the availability of a room in which you can work. Of course, you can sit in the fresh air, but this is not always convenient, as unexpected rain can interfere with work. The room should be well lit, but most importantly, you need a strong large table or workbench on which the details of furniture will be placed.

Where to get materials

Since garden furniture remains outdoors throughout the summer, one of the main requirements for materials for its manufacture is weather resistance. An equally important factor is the low cost: the amounts spent should not make a hole in your budget. First of all, we advise you to audit pantries, attics and other places where old, obsolete things can accumulate.

So, grandmother's curtains will make excellent pillows and mattresses that will make the furniture more comfortable and cozy. Old chairs, cabinets and chests of drawers can become donors of details. Pieces of plywood lying around in the barn can be used to make seats. Cut tree trunks or old car tires provide the basis for many great design ideas. If desired, you can use almost any “illiquid assets” as a basis for garden furniture: metal or plastic barrels, an old bathtub, door panels, etc.

But the bulk of the materials will still have to be bought. Fortunately, the necessary materials are quite affordable: boards and wooden beams, a profile pipe and a steel corner, moisture-resistant OSB boards. To increase the safety of products, you will need varnishes and paints for outdoor work. When choosing lumber, make sure that the wood is deresined and well dried. Raw boards in the process of drying warp and crack under the sun's rays, resin appears on fresh cuts, which is easy to stain clothes. Such boards are not suitable for work.

One of the most popular "semi-finished products" for the manufacture of garden furniture are wooden pallets, or pallets. They are made from standard, well-dried boards, and their design itself easily becomes the basis for many products. If we are talking about used pallets, then they can be purchased literally for a penny or even for nothing on a pickup basis. To do this, just visit the nearest commodity base or warehouse complex. But it’s better to buy new pallets, as used ones can be difficult to clean from dirt, and the strength no longer meets the requirements.

Garden furniture features

Garden furniture falls into three main categories.

Tips for making garden furniture

We bring to your attention a few ideas dedicated to the manufacture of garden furniture. All of them are quite simple, so even a person who does not have manual labor skills can cope with their translation into reality and creatively develop them.

Bench from old nightstands

If you have two old bedside tables, try turning them into an elegant garden bench. With minimal labor costs, the bedside tables will turn into supports, and to make a seat, you need to buy two magpie boards 2–2. 5 meters long.

Now it remains only to install a finished bench on the veranda or under a shady tree. To make the seat more comfortable, sew a mattress from a bright fabric and place it on top.

Table and seats made from old tires

To make a table and four poufs, you will need 12 tires of the same diameter and several sheets of plywood 8 or 10 mm thick.

Alternatively, use mesh woven from linen cord instead of plywood seats. To do this, drill a series of holes along the diameter of the top tire, through which you pull the cord so that the result is a wicker seat.

Pallet garden swing

Carefully sand a clean wooden pallet with sandpaper to eliminate the risk of splinters and make the surface smooth. Remove wood dust and coat the wood with at least three coats of waterproof varnish. Attach a strong cord to the edges of the pallet, or better, a metal chain.

From steel shaped pipes, boil out the frame for hanging the swing, fix it in the ground, filling the dug ends of the pipes with concrete. Hang the pallet on the frame, put a bright mattress or a soft blanket folded four times on top. The swing is ready!

Table and pallet chairs

Wooden pallets serve as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the creators of garden furniture. The simplest option is to make a table and chairs.

To make a chair:

To make a table, take two pallets. On the bottom, install the parts remaining from the manufacture of chairs with two boards, cover with a second pallet on top. Fasten the entire structure with self-tapping screws, varnish in several layers.

Table and chairs from tree trunks

Thick trunks of sawn trees can be used to make original and stylish garden furniture.
