How We Tested the Best Shark Vacuums

We tested Shark vacuums in a 1-bedroom apartment that was smaller than 800 square feet on several types of flooring: two types of laminate hardwood floors, tile flooring, regular carpeting, and an area rug.

Every product was tested the same way, picking up a combination of oatmeal and dog kibble as well as lots of pet hair from both a Chihuahua–pug mix and an English bulldog.

In addition to picking up these things on the various kinds of flooring, we also maneuvered each vacuum around the space, tried each accessory, and cleaned out the canister, performing eight hands-on tests.

This upright Shark vacuum is powerful, versatile, and maneuverable and comes with a swivel head for increased mobility. Turn the motorized brush roll on or off depending on whether it’s cleaning carpet or hard surfaces. It also features a pet power brush, a motorized handheld brush roll to better gather pet hair, plus a crevice tool for cleaning difficult-to-reach areas.

The Shark vacuum has a 30-foot cord and 1,200W of power for deep-cleaning thick carpets. Despite this high motor power, the vacuum only weighs 13.7 pounds. The dust collection canister can be lifted off the vacuum base to enable better access under furniture. The canister is completely sealed and has a HEPA filter that traps 99.9 percent of dust and allergens that pass through.

The suction of this vacuum was incredibly impressive. While using it, we noticed that an object located inches away from the machine was being sucked in. So, while this isn’t one of Shark’s famed “pet” models, the price and features make it a solid choice for homes with pets.

The only thing we didn’t like about this vacuum is that while it was great on larger carpets, it isn’t the best choice for homes with delicate or multiple-area rugs. The canister also didn’t refasten very easily.

The TruePet vacuum also has a two-in-one pet multi-tool with a bristle brush and upholstery brush to ensure even small hairs get sucked up by the vacuum, which the LED lights make very easy to see.

We loved the accessories, including an upholstery tool, pet power brush, and crevice tool. The crevice tool has a seemingly endless number of uses, including cleaning floor trim, cleaning under appliances, and cleaning in couch cracks.

The TruePet vacuum has a powerful 1,150W output and a sealed dust collection canister that uses a HEPA filter to catch 99. 9 percent of dust and allergens. This vacuum can switch from carpet to floor mode with the controls located on the handle for more versatility while cleaning. The device features a 25-foot power cord and weighs 15.4 pounds, which felt a bit heavy after using it for a few minutes.

The 30-foot cord length makes it easy to clean without needing to unplug it when going from room to room.

While it has modes for Thick Carpet/Area Rugs and Hard Floor, this model vacuum self-propels in Carpet/Low Pile mode. Although this makes it easy to vacuum, it can be challenging to avoid hitting furniture.

It’s also worth noting that turning on this vacuum isn’t intuitive. There’s both a top and bottom button that must be turned on. After a few minutes of feeling frustrated, we had to consult the manual to figure it out.

To really clean dust, dirt, debris, pet hair, and other allergens from hardwood floors, this Shark vacuum has a powerful 1,200W motor and a built-in LED lighting system on the floor nozzle. The vacuum has a low profile that’s ideal for cleaning hardwood and other nonfibrous floors, and it has a swivel steering head that’s easy to maneuver on carpet or across hardwood.

The Shark Rotator Professional vacuum includes a dust collection bin that can be lifted away from the base and used with the included upholstery tool or crevice tool. The dust collection bin has a HEPA-rated filter and is sealed to keep allergens and dust from escaping. This model weighs 15.5 pounds and has a 25-foot power cord.

While it was just a touch heavier than we would have liked, this vacuum truly lives up to the “Rotator” name. It swivels with ease around edges and corners. We particularly liked using it to vacuum around the edges of our round dining table. It felt very comfortable in the hand and really got the job done.

For those who have small spaces to clean, who have mobility issues such as a bad back that makes using a heavy upright uncomfortable, or who simply love the convenience of a cordless vacuum, the Shark Vertex Ultra Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum with DuoClean PowerFins checks all those boxes.

One great advantage this product has over other stick vacuums is that it comes with an extra battery, giving 80 minutes of total runtime. So if a home is larger, simply swap out the battery and keep going. Another unique feature is that this model folds over for more compact and easy storage.

There is just one caveat to keep in mind before clicking “add to cart.” At 300 watts, the motor on this vacuum isn’t the most powerful (which is to be expected with most stick vacuums anyway), but the Turbo Mode makes up for this.

For a powerful robot vacuum that does it all, the Shark AI Robot Self-Empty XL may impress. It picks up everything from pet hair to small bits of food like oatmeal and larger pieces like kibble. There’s also a HEPA filter, making this an ideal vacuum for anyone who really doesn’t like to vacuum.

One of the best things about this robot is that it self-empties at the base. Just press a button, and seconds later, the vacuum is clean. The base is also large enough to hold quite a bit of debris, so it doesn’t need to be emptied after each use.

However, as with all robot vacuums, AI isn’t perfect. This one wasn’t able to avoid all the furniture in the room, at least the first and second times we used it, so there may be a bit of a learning curve.

Those who prefer a corded vacuum and have homes with pets and a variety of flooring types may want to consider the Shark Vertex Ultralight Corded Stick DuoClean Vacuum. With a 30-foot-long cord, it’s easy to go from room to room without needing to unplug the vacuum often.

However, one downside of this vacuum is that the dirt cup is very small, especially considering Shark touts it as being extra large. For a 1-bedroom apartment with two pets, it needed to be emptied after one use. If used often, this can become an inconvenience.

Still, this vacuum is a great option for many surfaces, like hardwood, laminate, tile, carpet, and upholstery. A built-in handheld vacuum can be removed from the base and used independently for vacuuming stairs, furniture, and hard-to-access locations. It also comes with a dusting brush, crevice tool, a self-cleaning pet power brush, and an onboard storage clip.

Types of Shark Vacuums

Stick

A stick Shark vacuum is essentially a smaller version of an upright Shark. Stick models can also be corded or cordless, though their main benefit is how lightweight they are compared to their upright Shark counterparts. They’re easier to lift over carpet transition bars or to carry up and down the stairs.

The motor on a stick Shark vacuum is typically less powerful, the vacuum head is not as wide, and the collection bin is smaller than that of an upright vacuum. These reductions may seem like a disadvantage at first, but because of their maneuverability, stick Shark vacuums are much better suited for apartment living and for houses with narrow rooms or hallways.

Robotic

Robotic Shark vacuums don’t have a lot of power, but they make up for it by being relatively autonomous. You can set one of these vacuums on a timer to activate once a day and clean up the floor it’s on. While they can’t go up the stairs, they also won’t fall down the stairs due to sensors in the front of the device.

These vacuums work well in apartments or small houses with hardwood or tile floors. They’re not optimal for larger homes because the dust-collection bin is very small and they take a long time to cover every part of the floor. They also lack the power to effectively clean pet hair or very deep carpets.

Handheld

Handheld Shark vacuums function well for cleaning a car or stairs or to reach more difficult areas around the home. They weigh less than stick, upright, and robotic models but will usually have more power than robotic vacuums and may feature pet-hair-specific functions.

Handheld vacuums are typically cordless, and some upright Shark vacuums have one built in as a helpful cleaning alternative. These handheld vacuums are great for cleaning upholstery, drapes, furniture, and mattresses.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Shark Vacuum

Beyond type, there are many other characteristics that differentiate Shark vacuums. Before buying a new Shark vacuum for your home, keep in mind these critical factors.

Home Size

    The Shark Vertex Pro Powered Lift-Away is the best Shark vacuum we've tested. While its upright design makes it bulkier and less maneuverable than traditional stick/handheld alternatives like the Shark Vertex Pro Lightweight, the flip side of this larger body is an increased debris capacity, so you won't have to empty out its dustbin quite as often. Performance is superb on a wide range of surfaces, as it easily clears away debris on hard floors and low and high-pile carpet. It features two distinct surface settings, though they only change the speed of its brushroll and not the height of its floorhead, so it's still liable to get stuck on rug tassels and thick carpeting.

    It uses a similar 'Lift-Away' design to a lot of other conventional Shark uprights, which lets you pick up and carry its canister body separately from its floorhead, so you can easily clean under tables and chairs with its hose. However, it's worth noting that it isn't as well-suited to cleaning large areas as corded models, as it can only run for a maximum of about 40 minutes when used in its traditional upright configuration. If you aren't entirely sold on the vacuum's cordless design and prefer using a corded vacuum for longer cleaning sessions, the Shark APEX UpLight is a fantastic alternative.

    The Shark Cordless Pet Plus is the best cordless Shark vacuum at a mid-range price point that we've tested, and it also happens to be another one of the best Shark vacuums for pet hair we've tested. It has a shorter battery life than the Shark Vertex Pro Powered Lift-Away and a less powerful suction motor than the Shark Rotator Lift-Away ADV, so it isn't as well-suited for deep-cleaning jobs. However, its comparatively lightweight stick design makes it easier to maneuver in tight spots. It also does a fantastic job of clearing away debris on hard surfaces like tile or linoleum. The onboard HEPA filter also allows it to seal in most allergens, like dust or pet dander.

    Similar to most other Shark Vacuums, there are two dedicated surface settings for bare floors and thick carpeting, though these settings only change the rotational speed of its primary brushroll, not its height, so it can still get stuck on surfaces like shag-pile rugs pretty easily. There's also no miniature turbo brush tool included in the box, so you'll need to settle for its straight-suction upholstery tool when cleaning furniture.

    The Shark Rocket Corded is the best Shark vacuum at a budget price that we've tested. This corded stick vacuum has a smaller dustbin than the Shark Cordless Pet Plus and doesn't feel as sturdy, but it is cheaper, and its corded design allows you to clean for longer periods of time without having to worry about running out of charge. It also performs superbly on bare floors and does a very good job of dealing with debris on carpeting. It offers two surface settings for its floorhead but unfortunately can still get stuck on thick rugs, as neither setting changes the height of its brushroll. It's important to note that its brushroll isn't removable either, making it a hassle to clear away any tangled pet hair.

    This vacuum is lightweight and maneuverable, meaning you can clean cluttered areas for long periods with minimal fatigue. While you'll have to pay more, it's available with a 'Home & Car Detail' kit that includes a set of fine brushes and crevice tools to help you clean tight spots.

    The best Shark robot vacuum we've tested is the Shark EZ Robot Self-Empty, and it's worth a look if you don't need the deep-cleaning performance of a manually-operated vacuum like the Shark Rotator Lift-Away ADV. Unlike many other robot vacuums at this price point, it has a self-emptying feature that lets it automatically transfer debris from its dustbin into an external dirt compartment mounted to its charging dock, reducing hands-on maintenance requirements. You can use its companion app to schedule cleaning sessions, though there isn't any support for virtual boundary markers. Unlike the Shark IQ Robot, it doesn't come with a set of physical boundary markers either. Still, it cleans in an organized pattern and does a good job of maneuvering itself around obstacles.

    However, it's worth noting that this robot vacuum doesn't have a surface detection system that would allow it to change its suction power mode automatically. If you want to adjust its cleaning mode, you have to manually select it through its companion app for every cleaning job. There's no onboard HEPA filter either, which isn't the best option if you're sensitive to fine allergens.

    The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is the best cordless Shark vacuum with a handheld design that we've tested. Unlike the Shark Cordless Pet Plus or any other Shark stick vacuum, it's only really intended for quick spot-cleaning sessions. It does a fantastic job dealing with pet hair and solid debris on flat, even surfaces and delivers a superb overall performance on carpets and rugs. It feels well-built and has a simple design that incurs few recurring costs. It comes with a crevice tool for tackling messes in tight corners, a hard-bristle brush to dislodge stuck-on dirt and debris, and a turbo brush for cleaning furniture, though it isn't very effective for dealing with pet hair on upholstered surfaces.

    Unfortunately, this vacuum's battery life of little over 10 minutes isn't especially noteworthy, even by the standards of other cordless stick vacuums, and you'll need to work fast when cleaning bigger messes. It also has terrible air filtration performance, so it isn't the best option if you suffer from allergies. If that's a concern, consider the Shark WANDVAC, which does a much better job of sealing in allergens like pet dander, and you can further bolster its filtration performance by purchasing an aftermarket HEPA filter. However, it's pricier than the UltraCyclone and has a much smaller dustbin.

Shark produces a variety of different vacuum types at various price points. They're smartly designed to reconfigure into a handheld design if you need a closer clean, and cordless options are available. When comparing their stick vacuums to Dyson's offerings, Shark vacuums feel better built and sturdier. However, they also tend to have a similar but slightly worse performance on carpet. Their upright vacuums usually perform better on all surface types than BISSELL vacuums.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

ASSEMBLING THE SHARK® VACUUM CLEANER

1. Insert the tube into the floor nozzle, pressing until it clicks into place.
2. Insert the handheld vacuum into the top of the wand, pushing until it clicks into place. For proper operation, make sure all components are fully connected and in place.

WARNING: This vacuum will not stand on its own. See page 11 for storage instructions.

USING THE LI-ION BATTERY

Li-ion battery not fully charged. Fully charge before first use. During first use, discharge the battery until it is completely discharged. This will condition the battery.

POWER AND BATTERY CHARGE LED INDICATORS

LI-ION BATTERY DISPOSAL

This product uses a Li-ion rechargeable and recyclable battery. When the battery no longer holds a charge, it should be removed from the vacuum and disposed of. DO NOT incinerate or compost the battery. nine0131 If the lithium-ion Power Pack needs to be replaced, dispose of it or dispose of it according to local regulations. In some regions, it is illegal to dispose of used lithium-ion batteries in the trash or with municipal solid waste. Return used power supplies to an authorized recycling center or retailer for recycling. Contact your local recycling center for information on where to take your used power supply.

NOTE: A full charge takes approximately 3 hours. A Lithium Ion power pack, like all Lithium Ion batteries, will naturally decrease in capacity over time compared to 100% new battery capacity.

Plug the lithium-ion power pack charger into a power outlet.


Remove the handheld vacuum cleaner from the wand by pressing the wand release button and pulling it up. Connect the charger to the charging port of the handheld vacuum cleaner. nine0003


To remove the battery, press the battery release button and slide the battery back. Connect the charger to the charging port on the battery.


To put the vacuum cleaner into storage mode, press the release latch while folding the handheld vacuum cleaner forward until it clicks and locks the wand. Connect the charger to the charging port of the handheld vacuum cleaner.

USING SMART RESPONSE TECHNOLOGY


Slide the switch up to turn off the power. To start cleaning, set the switch to the desired position. nine0003


Hard floor / Small area rugs Use this setting to clean floors and small area rugs.

Carpet Use this setting to pick up debris from the surface of carpets.


Pull the trigger on the handheld vacuum for additional power. Release to return to ion power mode. Boost mode is available for both carpet and hard floors.

CLEANING MODES

To mop the floor, place your foot on the floor nozzle and tilt the handheld vacuum cleaner backwards.
NOTE: The brush roller only activates when the handheld vacuum cleaner and tube are tilted back.

Press the wand release button to remove the handheld vacuum cleaner from the wand. Great for cleaning stairs, furniture and other above floor surfaces with accessories.

Stand upright and press the nozzle release button where the bottom of the stick meets the nozzle. Lift up to disconnect. Great for cleaning baseboards, ceiling fans, window sills and other hard to reach places. nine0003

USING THE FLEXOLOGY® WAND
FLEXOLOGY® ACHIEVE

Press the Flexology® Wand Unlock Latch on the back of the wand, then adjust the angle.

Adjust the wand to a smaller angle to make it easier to clean under furniture.

FLEXOLOGY® STORAGE

To put the vacuum cleaner into storage mode, press the release latch while folding the handheld vacuum cleaner forward until it clicks and locks the wand. nine0003

NOTE. Be careful when folding or unfolding the wand so that your fingers do not get caught in the mechanism.

MAINTENANCE OF THE VACUUM CLEANER
CLEANING THE DUST CUP

Press the release button of the handheld vacuum cleaner and remove the handheld vacuum cleaner from the wand.

To empty the dust container when attached to the handheld vacuum cleaner, place the dust container over the dust container and slide the cover release slider forward. nine0003

REMOVING AND CLEANING THE VACUUM CLEANER

To remove the dust container from the portable vacuum cleaner, press the dust container release button next to the handheld vacuum cleaner. Tilt the dust box and remove it to remove.
To remove dust and debris, hold the dust box over the container, then slide the lid release slider forward.

Remove debris from the dust shield by gently tapping it or wiping it with a dry cloth if necessary. To clean the inside of the dust bin, rinse it with water. Lay it on its side to air dry for at least 24 hours before reinstalling. nine0003

CLEANING THE FILTERS

Clean the filters with water only. Allow all filters to air dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinstalling to prevent liquid from entering electrical parts. Clean the filters before the engine at least once a month and the filter after the engine at least once a year. Remove dirt between washes if necessary. Heavy use may sometimes require more frequent cleaning. nine0003

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use soap when cleaning filters. Use only water.

Press the dust bag release button and remove the dust bag. Pull the foam and felt filters out of the back of the dust box.

Remove the dust container. Pull the post-motor filter out of the handheld vacuum cleaner.

  2. Using a coin, turn the locks counterclockwise to open, then remove the cover to access the brush roll. nine0180

  4. Replace the cover by inserting the inserts into the slots, then applying firm pressure from all sides before turning the locks clockwise to close. As soon as the locks are locked, an audible click will be heard.

NOTE: Anti Hair Wrap technology continuously removes hair from the brush roller during vacuuming. Sometimes you may see
a small amount of hair around the roller, just keep vacuuming and the comb and suction cup will remove the hair as you brush. nine0003

LOCK CHECK

Checking the portable vacuum cleaner for blockages:

  1. Turn off the vacuum cleaner.
  2. Remove the handheld vacuum cleaner from the tube.
  3. Check all dust collector inlets and remove any debris or obstruction.

Wand check for clogs: Flexology® Wand:

  1. Turn off vacuum cleaner.
  2. Remove the handheld vacuum cleaner and floor nozzle from the tube. nine0180
  3. Check for clog access on the Flexology® part of the tubing by pinching the tabs on both sides of the hose and lifting the hose to access the tubing.
  4. Clear debris and debris.

Checking the floor nozzle for blockages:

  1. Switch off the vacuum cleaner.
  2. Remove the wand.
  3. Use the edge of a coin to open the three locks on the bottom of the floor nozzle (see page 12).
  4. Remove the cover and open the floor nozzle mouth. nine0180
  5. Check the hole and remove any debris or obstruction.
  6. Replace the cover by pressing firmly on all sides and turning the locks counterclockwise.
TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

  • Check filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow the instructions for rinsing and air drying the filters completely before reloading into vacuum.
  • Dust container can be filled; empty dustbin.
  • Check floor nozzle for blockages; remove blockages if necessary.
  • Remove any threads, carpet fibers, or hair that may be wrapped around the roller.
  • Check the connection between the handheld vacuum cleaner and the tube for blockages; remove blockages if necessary. If the problem persists, contact customer support. nine0180

Vacuum cleaner switches off by itself.
There are several possible causes for vacuum shutdown, including blockage, battery problems, and overheating. If the vacuum cleaner turns off by itself, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and check the battery indicators located on the handpiece of the vacuum cleaner. If recharging is needed, turn on the power while the vacuum is off.
  2. Empty the dust bin and clean the filters (see Sections "Emptying the dust bin" and "Cleaning the filters").
  3. Check tubing, accessories and inlets and remove any obstructions.
  4. Allow the device and battery to cool for at least 45 minutes until they return to room temperature.
  5. Restart with power switch/selector.

The battery indicator on the portable vacuum cleaner is flashing.

  • Lower LED blinking (fig. A): Battery needs to be charged.
