Shakira has come a long way from her modest childhood in Colombia. With a hugely successful career that started when she was just 13 years old, the star has built up an impressive portfolio over the years, spanning the globe. Some of that property was bought with her ex-partner Gerard Piqué, including the Barcelona residence that's at the centre of allegations of tax fraud against the singer. Let's retrace Shakira's road to fame, step foot inside some of the amazing homes and see how the former couple might be dividing up their multi-million dollar portfolio. ..

Where does Shakira live?

Shakira lives in the exclusive Pedralbes neighbourhood of Barcelona, where she has been spending her time since the Coronavirus pandemic. As you would expect from one of the world's most famous pop stars, she also owns property in Miami Beach, Uruguay and the Bahamas. With enormous wealth at her disposal, she's collected an incredible roster of jaw-dropping real estate over the years. But the star wasn't born into such palatial surroundings...

Where is Shakira from?

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on 2 February 1977, in the small town of Barranquilla, Colombia. With a Lebanese father, William Mebarak Chadid, and a Columbian mother, Nidia Ripoll, the star has nine half-siblings from her dad's previous marriage. When she was just seven years old, Shakira's father's jewellery business went bankrupt and the family were plunged into poverty.

Shakira's childhood

Sony Music Columbia

Shakira showed promise from very early on. At the age of four, the budding star would entertain herself by writing poems, and penned her first song at just eight years old. After signing her first record deal at 13, Shakira released her first album Magia in 1991 and her second, Peligro in 1993. When neither was successful, she decided to take a break from singing to act in the Latin soap opera El Oasis

Shakira resumed her music career in 1995 and released two more albums, Pies descalzos and then ¿Dónde están los ladrones? in 1998. Both included hit singles but the star still wanted to break into the American music industry. In 2001 her fifth album Unplugged won the Grammy Award for Best Latin pop album, but it was her next record Laundry Service that really kick-started her international career. Her first English language album sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. With her career finally setting off, it was time for the songstress to invest in some serious real estate.

In 2000, a year before her hit single Whenever, Wherever hit the charts, Shakira started dating Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the former Argentine president Fernando de la Rúa. The couple often stayed on their sprawling farm in the small fishing village of Faro José Ignacio in Uruguay. It is not known when the singer snapped up the property or how much she paid but we do know that in 2008 she holed up there to begin work on a new album.

Set on over 12 acres of land, the home was up for rent until recently, giving us a sneak peek inside. With seven bedrooms, four in the main home and two in the guest house, plus one in a single third building, there's also room for four staff to sleep. The star described the farm as "idyllic and very romantic" in an interview, perfect for inspiring her writing process.

Inside, the main house has a cinema, work office and a gym. It was also reported that Shakira built a recording studio within the grounds, so she could work on her music. Sitting within the tiny village of Faro José Ignacio, the star would have had some famous neighbours, with the likes of the Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood holidaying in the area.

Outside, the home boasts a heated pool surrounded by decking, a lake with boats, a sauna and a tennis court, as well as having perimeter surveillance to keep the star safe. The perfect spot for penning an album. Shakira is also a fan of keeping fit and could spend her days swimming and playing tennis at the farm.

Pictured here in December 2009, the couple eventually went their separate ways in August 2010. Having owned several properties together, there was huge disagreement over who owned what. Just after the split, Antonio tried to sue the singer in a $100 million (£80m) lawsuit for what he felt he was owed after acting as her business manager, despite it not being a written agreement.

As soon as she hit the big time in 2001, Shakira started building her luxury property portfolio. In June of that year, she snapped up this Mediterranean-style estate located in the prestigious gated community on Florida's La Gorce Island for a reported $1.1 million (£880k). Home to big-name stars such as Cher, Matt Damon and Billy Joel, Shakira would have been a wonderful addition to the local celebrity roster of residents.

Spread over 2,700 square feet, it was the perfect home for the star, who would now be spending much more time stateside working on becoming the next huge crossover Latin artist. With stunning detail inside, the arched doorway leads through to the main double-height living space with built-in shelving and a feature staircase leading to the upper floor.

Outside, the garden may be on the smaller side, but boasts a swimming pool surrounded by decking and lush foliage. The super-private home would have been perfect for the popstar but sitting on less than half an acre of land, Shakira was looking for more and decided to sell up in 2005 for $1.8 million (£1.4m), making quite the profit. Although maybe the star should have kept hold of the property as an investment piece – it’s currently estimated to be worth $6.6 million (£5.4m).

In September 2001, just not long after her first Miami Beach purchase, Shakira snapped up this stunning home in the same area. Spanning over 8,000 square feet, the home sits on the prestigious North Bay Road and was bought by the singer for just shy of $3. 4 million (£2.7m). A slight upgrade from her first purchase!

Shakira made sure to renovate the mansion over the 12 years that she lived there and reportedly made a number of upgrades including hardwood floors imported from Spain, a new front door, updated landscaping and brand new lighting systems for inside and out.

In 2013, Shakira decided to put it up for rent at a huge $45,000 (£36k) a month. She then listed it for sale the same year for just shy of $13 million (£10.4m), to then up the price in 2015 to $13.9 million (£11.1m). After struggling to sell, she listed the home again in February 2021 for $15.9 million (£12.7m) before taking it down six months later in August. The house has apparently remained off-market ever since.

Fast forward to 2011 and rather than buying another mega-mansion, Shakira made a bold real estate bet on purchasing a share in a private island in the Bahamas. The singer pooled together with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz to buy the retreat for a reported $15 million (£12m), with plans to build luxury hotels, condos and golf courses, turning it into the ultimate artists' retreat.

With five white sandy beaches and three salt ponds, the island known as Bonds Cay is part of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. This small patch of paradise is spread over 550 acres of tropical landscape with multiple waterfalls, three bays and a number of lagoons.

As well as suing the star for his work on her career, her former partner Antonio de la Rúa was also reportedly involved in the sale and development of Bonds Cay. In 2013, Shakira allegedly sued her ex-partner for taking $6. 7 million (£5.4m) without her permission, which included $500,000 (£400k) that was put towards a real estate project on the island, that she was not part of.

Shakira met her most recent partner, footballer Gerard Piqué – with whom she would go on to have two sons, Sasha and Milan – on the set of her Waka Waka video in 2010. In 2015 the couple splashed out a reported $5.9 million (£4.7m) on a mansion in Barcelona's plush Pedralbes neighbourhood. Spread over 1,500 square feet, the home boasts seven bedrooms, two kitchens, a swimming pool with a waterfall, a gym and a whole host of other amenities.

However, it hasn't been all plain sailing for the star and she's suffered a heavy dose of bad luck. In June 2018, the luxury mansion was targeted by burglars. With the couple away, Piqué's parents were sleeping upstairs when the home was raided, with the criminals coming away with expensive watches and jewellery.

Described as one of the best houses in the city, the house is set over three floors and was renovated by the couple before they had their first child in January 2013. The famous pair regularly shared sneak peeks into their private life on Instagram, with Gerard seen here sitting in an all-white living space with an electric piano keyboard in the background.

In 2018, Shakira was charged with tax evasion by the Spanish authorities. Accused of failing to pay around $16.4 million (£11.8m) in taxes between 2012 and 2014, the singer had listed her official residence as the Bahamas but spent most of her time in Spain, according to a report by Forbes. Under Spanish law, anyone living in the country for more than six months a year must pay taxes.

Pictured is Shakira's car leaving after one of her court appearances in 2019. She denied any wrongdoing that year, but reportedly paid up when the court found Spain to be her main residence. The singer had appealed the ruling, but that appeal was dismissed in May 2022.

The court case rumbles on

The case looks set to rumble on though, as despite Shakira’s legal team continuing to defend her innocence, a Spanish prosecutor is now seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of more than $23.5 million (£19.3m) for Shakira over the tax fraud case, Reuters reports.

A possible trial date?

In July 2022 The Guardian reported that Shakira rejected a settlement offer from the prosecutor’s office, which would have closed the case. So while there is no official court date yet, a high-stakes trial might now occur. Shakira’s representatives released a statement saying the singer is “fully confident of her innocence” and that she considers the case “a total violation of her rights”. But back to the singer's properties...

Towards the end of 2019, Shakira and her then-partner bought a new build villa in one of their favourite holiday spots, the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. Set to be completed this year, the villa is located in the luxury Cap St. Georges resort, which overlooks the Sea of Akamas near Paphos.

Located opposite a brand new five-star hotel, Shakira and her family have been seen travelling back and forth to Cyprus over the years, so it's about time they put down some permanent digs in the holiday spot. The new holiday home will see them enjoy two kilometres of beachfront, a spa and fine dining options in the swanky restaurants and bars nearby.

With prices starting at $2.3 million (£1.8m), the holiday spot is the largest seafront resort in Cyprus. The palatial spread will also feature gardens overlooking the sea, with the pool providing stunning sunset views come evening. The question is what will happen to this property – and others owned by the family – now that Shakira and Pique have split…

The couple confirmed in early June that they would be separating. They asked that the media respect the privacy of their sons, who are now seven and nine years old. Speculation about the pair’s relationship had cropped up over the years and Shakira and Gerard have both been asked why they never married – most recently Pique said it was Shakira’s mentality, but that they ‘work good as a couple’. They certainly worked well as property investors if nothing else – so what could happen to their expansive portfolio?

This private pair haven’t given away any details about where they'll be living now, or what will happen to their residences. The next step will depend on how the pair bought their properties – as they’re not married, it all comes down to whose names are on the deeds. If they each have equal stakes in the residences, maybe they’ll sell them off and split the profits, or perhaps they will keep hold of the properties and continue to use them as homes and holiday retreats with their children.

One thing is clear, with their vast collection of homes – and an island – the ex-lovers won’t need to spend any time together if they don’t want to. Hopefully the divvying up of assets will be smoother than the tumultuous time Shakira has had with her exes in the past...

The last post the Colombian dedicated to her partner was last March, with a message full of pride. “600 matches! I don’t think you have ever performed 600 concerts. Shakira, 45, and the 35-year-old athlete met in 2010 at the Rock in Rio festival, although many think that their first meeting was in the “Waka Waka” clip for the World Cup. They met in South Africa for the World Cup, an event for which their communication became more fluid. By May 2011, Piqué was spotted at her concert in Barcelona.

Where singer Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique live

Singer Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique have been happy together for more than 10 years. The celebrity couple has two sons. However, despite the strong union, the lovers are in no hurry to officially register their relationship. Fans of a bright performer and a famous football player are often interested in what their housing looks like. It is known that the couple has a mansion in Barcelona and a house in Miami.

The singer and the athlete started dating in 2010. The couple confirmed their stormy romance only a year later. In 2013, Shakira delighted fans with the news of a new addition to the family. The artist gave birth to a son. The couple's second child was born in 2015. The children of Shakira and Gerard were born in the city of Barcelona.

Before the birth of the singer's first child, some publications reported that the brilliant couple had bought a new house for themselves. The decision to buy this property was influenced by its location. The mansion is located near the stadium where the football player trained. Initially, the building had a fairly standard appearance and did not make much of an impression.

The adjacent area is fenced with a high fence, which fits perfectly into the landscape of the area. Thanks to him, the star couple manages to reliably hide their private lives from outsiders.

The celebrity mansion is located on a hill, so from the windows of the house you can admire a wonderful view of the surroundings. Since the original appearance of the building did not suit Shakira and Gerard, they decided to overhaul and rebuild the house.

If earlier the building looked like a medieval fortress, now it looks like a villa in Hollywood.

Near the mansion there is a spacious terrace where orange trees grow.

The building has a spacious living room, library, kitchen, bedrooms, games room. There are also 2 garages on the property. The purchase and arrangement of the house cost the beloved almost 6 million dollars.

The library has a comfortable reading area with a marble-topped table and comfortable chairs. This area is illuminated by 3 pendant lights. In addition to bookcases, there is a piano in the room.

The singer also has a luxurious villa in Miami, where she lived before starting a relationship with a football player. Exotic palm trees and plants grow on the territory of the villa. Near the house there is a large swimming pool with comfortable seating areas.

The area of the villa is approximately 2000 sq.m. The building itself was built in the 1950s. The artist bought this property in 2001 and made some changes to the building. An additional wing was added to the mansion. Specialists from a well-known architectural bureau helped the singer decorate the interior of the villa.

The house has a spacious living room-kitchen, a cinema, 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a games room and a gym with modern fitness equipment. The interior of many rooms is decorated in a minimalist style. The conciseness inherent in this style is diluted with the help of various decor items and art objects.

Living room and kitchen are shared space. Thanks to panoramic windows, a lot of natural light enters the room. The room has several cozy seating areas with soft white sofas. Near the upholstered furniture there are coffee tables with glass tops, which are decorated with orchids.

The dining area has a long table for 10 people. Near the table are chairs with soft backs and seats. A pedestal is installed along the wall, the tabletop of which is decorated with large table lamps. The dining area is illuminated by spotlights.

In the kitchen, an important place is given to a stylish set, the upper cabinets of which are made in white. The facades of the lower cabinets are made of wood. Near the headset there is a table with a glossy surface. One of the sides of the table acts as a bar counter. Near the table are high chairs on metal legs.

This house is currently empty as Shakira enjoys her life in Spain. The actress is building a successful career and is raising children. In her social networks, the singer often shares family photos with fans.

A brilliant couple created almost ten years ago by a singer from Colombia and a football player from Spain do not deny themselves comfortable accommodation. What does the house of Shakira and Gerard Pique look like, in which they rebuilt everything to their taste and where they have been living for many years? Let's see photos and videos.

House in Barcelona

Colombian singer Shakira and Spanish football player Gerard Pique have been together since 2010. Officially, the artist and athlete confirmed their relationship in February 2011.

Shakira and Gerard have two sons: Milan, who was born on January 22, 2013, and Sasha, who was born on January 29, 2015. Both sons of a couple in love (they are not married and do not plan to marry) were born in Barcelona, where Gerard Pique spent his whole life.

On the eve of the birth of the first child of the singer and defender of the Barcelona club, in June 2012, the media reported that the famous couple had acquired a family nest for themselves. The mansion was chosen on a territorial basis: it is located in Barcelona, next to the stadium where Piqué trains.

Initially, the house looked quite standard for this area, it did not make a brilliant impression.

One of the main advantages of the building (besides the location, of course) was and still is a high fence, successfully integrated into the landscape. Behind such a large capital fence, it is convenient for celebrities to hide their personal lives from prying eyes.

In addition, the house is located on a hill. Its windows offer a magnificent view of the surroundings.

However, the general appearance of the house and its interior decoration did not suit the common-law spouses. Therefore, before moving into the mansion in 2012, the star couple overhauled the house, seriously rebuilding it.

After the alteration, the building no longer looks like a medieval fortress, but rather resembles a Hollywood villa.

Orange trees are planted on the terrace of the building. The house has several bedrooms, a library, a games room with a pool table and two garages.

The mansion cost $5.8 million. This is almost half the cost of Shakira's villa in Miami (it cost $11 million).

Villa in Miami

Before her marriage, singer Shakira lived in a luxurious snow-white villa with a pool in Miami in the USA.

Built in the 1950s, a building of almost two thousand square meters was acquired by the performer in 2001 and remodeled to her liking. The house was rebuilt and added a new wing, with interior design by Ben Lopez & Associates and decorator Renata Lesse Bastos of Trace Design Studios.
