RELATED: Best Juicers of 2022

Our Verdict

The Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer is a sleek, stylish masticating juicer whose modern design and technology are reflected by the expensive price tag. The auger on this model rotates at only 43 RPM, slowly squeezing produce for maximum flavor. Multiple strainer options allow you to choose your amount of pulp, and additional options allow you to make other things like ice cream, sorbet, and nut milk. This model is built with high-quality materials that will likely improve its longevity, even with daily use. This slow juicer is one of the few in our juicer lineup to effectively juice leafy greens, however, an otherwise average performance doesn't quite line up with its above-average kitchen appliance price point.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Hurom Slow Juicer is undoubtedly not an entry-level model — if you couldn't tell from the price tag. It offers multiple strainers for maximum versatility, and its slow processing speed is not exactly convenient. This juicer also comes apart into many pieces, which complicates both cleaning and reassembly.

Performance Comparison

The Hurom Slow Juicer is a stylish, vertical slow juicer, but unfortunately doesn't offer performance befitting of its price tag.

Juice Quality

Many masticating juicers highlight their version of "slow squeeze" technology intended to minimize processing and thus oxidation, which in turn maximizes nutrient value and flavor. It's not exactly fair to judge slow juicers against the significantly faster spinning centrifugal models — which shred food with discs that rotate on the order of thousands of rotations per minute (RPM). But we can justly compare masticating models side-by-side, and relative to its competition, the Hurom Slow Juicer is indeed slow processing.

Juices from this model tend to be well-blended and delicious, but rather foamy, especially if they contain certain types of hard produce, like beets.

Credit: Austin Palmer

While the augers on other top-performing masticating models operate around 80 RPM, this one processes your fruits and vegetables at only 43 RPM. This incredibly slow process is intended to mimic hand squeezing juice and results in a better-blended finished product. We used a variety of recipes to judge juice quality, and the texture from this model was often smooth with little pulp and light, clean flavors that allowed more subtle ingredients to shine through. Our main criticism is that the juices tended to be thin and even a bit watery — a downside resulting from the slow masticating process and the effective strainers.

The Hurom H-AA does a fantastic job of straining solids, which results in juices that allow for even the most subtle flavors to shine.

Soft Produce

We all want clean, fresh-tasting juice, but we certainly don't want effective straining to come at the expense of overall juice yields. Unfortunately, that appears to be the case for the Hurom H-AA. The juice we squeezed with soft produce was minimally foamy and essentially pulp-free, including oranges, apples, cucumber, and celery. But this slow juicer produced, on average, almost 1 ounce less than other comparably priced models.

This juicer produced some of the best tasting, and most vibrant orange juice. Unfortunately, it just didn't produce very much of it.

Credit: Austin Palmer

The lack of introduced solids helps improve flavor and can lead to longer shelf-life, and indeed, all of the juices we made with the Hurom H-AA were delicious. But lower yields mean that you will need to spend more on produce to get the same amount of juice compared to other models in this review. The exception here is with apples: this slow juicer produced a tall glass of apple juice, with very little foam or separation — not an easy task considering the skins and seeds that often are processed along with the rest.

Alternatively, the yields from apple juice were significantly higher, and still maintained the same rich color and flavor.

Credit: Austin Palmer

Hard Produce

We were similarly disappointed in the juice yields using hard produce. We used carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes for these tests. Although this slow juicer is marketed as being able to "squeeze every single drop of juice out of your produce," we consistently found that the Hurom H-AA produced less juice than even significantly cheaper centrifugal models. Although the system works well, separating solids from juice for soft produce, the low-speed auger seems to have a tough time at this essential task of juicing hard produce.

The Hurom H-AA has a 2 inch chute, which is better suited to foods that have been cleanly prepared and cut into more reasonable sized chunks.

Credit: Laura Casner

Many of the juices tended to be mild to moderately pulpy, resulting in faster separation and a lower shelf-life. In particular, beet juice tended to be particularly foamy, with an average of 1 inch of foam topping the juice container. Although the foam doesn't affect the taste and can be strained off later, this does add an extra step to your juicing process, adding another delay to an already relatively slow process.

This juicer produced relatively high yields of beet juice, but it was moderately pulpy (even stringy), and the introduced solids resulted in a peculiar amount of foam.

Credit: Austin Palmer

Leafy Greens

While juicing hard and soft produce was a bit of a disappointment, especially considering the Hurom H-AA price, this slow juicer does much better when it comes to juicing leafy greens. The slow auger effectively compressed every last drop from the spinach, wheatgrass, and kale we juiced, with particularly high yields for the latter two.

The Hurom H-AA can accept enough wheatgrass to successfully produce a shot, albeit a small one.

Credit: Austin Palmer

In particular, the Hurom H-AA is one of the few models in our review that is actually capable of producing a shot of wheatgrass, at least to some degree. It is important to point out that at its yield ratio, this juicer will still need to process just over 4 ounces of fresh wheatgrass to get one jigger of juice, equal to 1. 5 fluid ounces. And similar to hard produce, this model produced surprisingly foamy green drinks — often, we found more than 1 inch of foam accumulating on the top of the juice.

It may not look like much... but this is one of the most successful wheatgrass juicings of any model we tested.

Credit: Austin Palmer

Cleaning

The Hurom H-AA is supposed to be designed for a clean operation, but the design characteristics don't translate well into practice. The slow-rotating auger jammed up on multiple occasions, including soft juicing produce like orange slices. The juicing chamber is equipped with an inner spinning brush that is supposed to sweep the strainer to reduce clogging, but the auger can easily become choked up when juicing a variety of produce.

Whole orange slices got stuck in the auger of the Hurom H-AA, and refused to be pushed down. Fortunately for us, this model features a reversible motor, but cleaning up this mess was still a bit of a pain.

Credit: Austin Palmer

Not only can juicing be a rather messy process, but the Hurom H-AA is also difficult to disassemble, clean, and reassemble. There are a lot of nooks and crannies to scrub, particularly around the gears that rotate the spinning brush, which was nearly impossible to clean and left us wondering how long it would take for food bits in there to mold. There are also many pieces to keep track of — our testers found this model annoyingly challenging to put back together after each cleaning.

The area around the mounting shaft of the auger fills up with a ton of food bits, which we would rather see directed to the pulp container.

Should You Buy the Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer?

The Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer is an overpriced, vertical masticating model. While it is well-suited to juicing leafy greens, its performance relative to soft and hard produce is merely average, mainly related to juice yields. The particularly slow process does offer a delicious glass of juice, with clean flavors and minimal pulp. However, the overall quality of juice doesn't quite balance out the other faults or the price. Not only is this juicer particularly slow, but cleaning and assembly can be difficult and time-consuming. Despite its flaws, this model does carry one of the best warranties of any juicer we tested.

The Hurom H-AA is, without a doubt, a high quality machine in terms of craftsmanship. Unfortunately for your average user, it is also quite complicated.

Credit: Laura Casner

What Other Juicer Should You Consider?

We prefer the Omega Nutrition Center for a good masticating juicer. This juicer is a top-ranking option that performed better than the competition and even sports at a lower price. While the price is still a premium compared to the competition, it is lower than Hurom, and you get a less frustrating, higher-quality machine. If your budget is smaller or you want a centrifugal machine, we like the Breville Juice Fountain. This machine performed well in every metric and sport a price less than one-third of the Hurom.

Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer Review: An Efficient, High-End Juicer

We purchased the Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer so our reviewer could put it to the test in her kitchen. Keep reading for our full product review.

Hurom is a company that’s been in the business for more than 40 years. We took the Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer for a tour of the produce section, juicing everything from apples to carrots to kale to watermelon, testing its abilities to extract juice from hard, soft, and medium-density foods. We even tested the ability to make “ice cream” from frozen fruits and yogurt, to make up for all that juice we consumed. Read on to see whether this high-end device is worthy of its high price tag.

The 6 Best Juicers of 2022

Setup Process: A little finicky

Assembling this for use isn’t quite as simple as it looks. Several pieces fit in different orientations, and the strainer or auger can appear to be all the way inserted but still too high to attach to the juicing chamber. After using the machine, we got used to its quirks, but still had times we needed to make adjustments to get the lid on. Once it was assembled, operation was simple.

Design: Looks nice on the counter

We wouldn’t necessarily call this a pretty appliance, but it’s not unattractive. Available in black or white for people who prefer an understated appearance, or in rose gold for a touch of elegance, it will look good on the counter if it’s destined to live there.

The Spruce Eats / Donna Currie

At the front of the juicer, between the pulp outlet and the juice outlet, is a lever that controls the pulp outlet labeled open, half-open, and closed. Oddly, the only settings that can be used during juicing are closed or half-open. The open setting is only used when the chamber is removed from the machine for cleaning, so we wondered why it wasn’t labeled to indicate that. As it is, it’s just a bit confusing.

One oddity is that while the hopper locks onto the juice chamber, the juice chamber doesn’t lock onto the body of the juicer. That makes it easy to remove the chamber, but it also means that someone could accidentally lift it off while the machine is running. The hopper tube is tinted a dark gray, making it a little difficult to see food in the tube, but the juicing chamber has less tint.

Performance: Efficient

There’s no doubt about it, this is a powerful machine—despite the fact that it’s called a slow-speed juicer. The “slow” designation is all about the fact that the auger turns slowly, but it’s actually fairly speedy when it comes to crunching vegetables and extracting juice and pulp. The pulp was barely damp, so we knew we were getting as much juice as possible. The machine is also quiet during operation.

The pulp was barely damp, so we knew we were getting as much juice as possible.

Features: Well designed

Two different juice strainers gave us the ability to decide how much pulp we wanted in our finished juice. For the most part, we opted for the least pulp to get just juice, but also tested the larger strainer for more pulp.

The feed tube is rather small. When we juiced plums, we had to cut them in quarters (after pitting) to get them to fit. The chamber has measurements up to 450 milliliters, which is handy considering the instructions say to open the juice port once the level is at 400 milliliters.

The juicer has a reverse gear that can be used if food gets stuck on the auger, but we didn’t need to use that function during our testing. We did flick the switch to make sure it worked properly, though.

The Spruce Eats / Donna Currie

The juice container has measurement markings in ounces, up to 35, and in milliliters up to 1,000. The markings are etched onto the container so they’ll never flake off, but we found them difficult to read.

For the most part, the manual is well-written and easy to understand, and the few translation issues were humorous rather than confusing, although the ice cream instruction that said, “When use the testaceous fruits, please peel and freeze to use,” left us running to Google to find out that testaceous means “brick-colored.” We’re still not sure what that meant, although we froze our bananas before using them for an ice cream equivalent.

The 6 Best Ice Cream Makers of 2022 | Tested by The Spruce Eats

Included Items: Many parts to store

Aside from the body of the machine that contains the motor, the removable parts include a juicing chamber, coarse and fine juice strainers, an ice cream strainer, a spinning brush assembly with silicone “brushes” that swipe the container to make sure everything is getting processed, an auger, and a hopper with a pusher and a lid. Other parts include a juice container with a lid, a pulp container, a chamber rack, two cleaning brushes, and a small recipe book.

While the lid for the juice container might be fine for short-term storage, it doesn’t snap on securely. The hopper lid doesn’t seem useful, either, so we’re puzzled why it was included. The lid might be used to hold moisture in the chamber temporarily before cleaning, but the instructions say that it’s best to clean the juicer right after use to prevent food from drying and becoming harder to remove.

With all these extra items that we felt were less useful, we were surprised that a strainer wasn’t included for catching foam from the juice as it was being released.

The Spruce Eats / Donna Currie

Cleaning: Lots and lots of things to clean

While cleaning the juicer wasn’t particularly difficult, it did have a lot of small spaces that needed attention as well as some very specific cleaning requirements. Parts are not dishwasher safe and shouldn’t be washed in hot water, and harsh or abrasive cleaners shouldn’t be used.

The Spruce Eats / Donna Currie

Cleaning is the only time when the pulp lever is used in the open position. This makes it easier to get packed-in pulp out of the small space, but it wasn’t as easy as rinsing—we had to poke and prod to get the pulp free.

While it’s nice to have extras, we felt some of the accessories weren’t particularly useful.

While it’s nice to have extras, we felt some of the accessories weren’t particularly useful. The chamber rack, for example, is designed to hold the auger, hopper, and chamber assembly, but we’re not sure why anyone would store them that way. Even stranger, once the two parts of the rack are assembled, they can’t be taken apart. For people who don’t use the juicer often, it would be just as easy to put all the parts back into the box to keep them clean and together.

What we found least intuitive was that the chamber packing, juice cap packing, and silicon brushes were supposed to be removed for cleaning. These are all soft silicone-like materials, and before we read the manual we assumed they were permanently installed. There’s a warning that instructions for removing the silicone brushes should be followed or the holder could be damaged. Taking these parts out and putting them back added to the cleaning time, and since all the parts were soft and rather small, it worried us that we might drop them down the drain or the dog would have a tiny chew toy if we weren’t careful. For small batches of juice, we spent more time cleaning than juicing.

For small batches of juice, we spent more time cleaning than juicing.

Price: Expensive

There’s no doubt that this is an expensive machine. The brand has a long history of making quality products, so it should last a long time, but it may be outside the budget limit for casual juicers. For folks who want to make juicing part of their normal lifestyle and want a powerful machine that will last, they may be willing to pay the price.

Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer vs. Omega Juicers NC900HDC Premium Juicer and Nutrition System

We also tested the Omega Juicers NC900HDC Premium Juicer and Nutrition System, which is slightly less expensive than the Hurom we reviewed here, and it also includes more features, like the ability to make pasta or peanut butter. For people who want a straight-up juicer for everyday use, the Hurom is a good choice, but we loved the Omega’s multiple personalities that went well beyond juicing, and we also love the Omega’s easy cleaning.

The 6 Best Masticating Juicers of 2022 | Tested by The Spruce Eats

Final Verdict

Good for serious juicers.

We liked the juice we got from the Hurom H-AA Slow Juicer, as well as the quality of the machine itself, but casual users might balk at the intricate cleaning after each use and the high price tag.

Customer Reviews

Hello! I want to thank the Hurom company, represented by of the Russian representative office, for their indifferent attitude to the problems clients. I own a Hurom HF-SBE11 juicer, purchased in one of the online stores (not on hurom-russia.ru), scarecrow lack of service centers (Voronezh), but the desire to have such a unit won. After pressing the pomegranate seeds, the auger stood up, the reverse did not help, barely opened by hand. Partially worn out internal fasteners in drum (the mesh was not damaged), the structure stopped closing. AT the online store where the purchase was made was told - bring or send the juicer in the package by mail. On request to provide they unsubscribed information about the availability of service centers (I quote: “There are none”), to a request to suggest where they themselves will apply when they receive juicer: "This is our inside information." Turned to good luck hurom-russia.ru consultants, they called me back and immediately reassured me that 9They are able to solve 5% of requests remotely. Communicated with Ilya (to him special thanks to). Sent all the necessary photo documents and damage, a week has passed - and I am again the happy owner of a working juicers (they sent me the necessary part entirely and for free).

So, summary. The company deserves respect, the service center is only in Moscow, but for them the distance is not a hindrance. Juicer is great very satisfied. Once again a HUGE THANK YOU!

I make juice every day while the family sleeps. A big plus in silent operation and very easy washing - just rinse and rinse the spout with a special brush. The state of health has changed, in the morning unusual cheerfulness and down with drowsiness! I can’t even believe that freshly squeezed juice has such an effect on health and mood.

My husband and I decided to take care of our health and purchased this juicer. The delight is indescribable - they experimented with everything that you can think of to push into a juicer. Juice makes everything! I never thought that celery juice with parsley can be drunk at all! They took them to show their parents)) They staged a demonstration and tasting. Despite all the experiments, it works flawlessly and looks like new. Quality product, although not cheap.

The machine is worth the money. I took the HU-500 for the grass, but it turned out that everything else is also useful. Carrots, pumpkins and other juicy ones went worse, but then an unexpected plus was discovered - the wife began to let this granular cake into mashed soups. During the apple season, she worked at 100! It crushes apples much better than centrifugal ones - there is more juice, it is clean and homogeneous. With greens, in general, a separate pleasure - we make juice from everything up to beet tops! At the exit is a thick rope. In order not to dilute with water - more cucumbers and zucchini, half a raw potato. The taste is great and very useful. I advise everyone! Although the price bites...

I have been using the Hurom Slow Juicer HU-500 auger juicer for 2 years now. I use it often - I made juice from everything (apple, orange, banana, cherry, raspberry, celery, parsley).
From the pros - it works quietly, there is little waste, it is quite easy to clean (I pass a couple of liters of water through the juicer and it is almost clean - just wash it a little with my hands).
Of the minuses - when I make a "shaft plan" after harvesting and the volumes are large - it drips from the spout, some adapter or hose would be nice ... For everyday use like "1-2 glasses of juice" this is generally uncritical.
Generally satisfied.

Juicer HU-500. Bought this juicer in 2012. Before that, there were several centrifuge ones - I felt the difference right away. Almost every day in the morning I make juice, sometimes I mix it with herbs (sorrel, celery).
The juicer is quiet, the juice is better and easier than centrifugal ones - no need to press hard, vegetables and fruits are served by themselves. Sometimes, to get juice from carrots, I send cake for the second round - I get some more juice. In general, I am very satisfied, I don’t want a centrifuge anymore.
Among the shortcomings - it periodically stops on hard vegetables and fruits, you have to turn on the reverse. It is difficult to clean the sieve from small seeds (orange, tangerine), although of course you can’t imagine anything here, and there is a brush in the kit.
