13 ideas for decorating a balcony, summer house and apartment with geraniums and geraniums

Many people consider this garden plant a favorite, but how much do you know about geraniums? We will give you useful tips on decorating a summer cottage or apartment with the help of pelargonium.

Carolina Plavina

Рixabay

Contents of the article

General information about geraniums and pelargoniums so popular, especially among beginners. There are over 250 species, from zonal geraniums that form the basis of summer beds, to hanging geraniums (ivy-leaved species) ideal for hanging baskets, and beautiful royal geraniums, known for their lush double flowers.

nine0003

In some countries, such as England, several tens of millions of geraniums are planted annually and these strong, reliable and trustworthy plants can be enjoyed for three seasons each year.

Pelargonium looks very good in open containers and window boxes on the balconies of apartments, as well as in borders in summer cottages. It adds vibrant color throughout the summer, its lush foliage adds texture to the garden and continues to delight even into the fall. Geraniums are also a wonderful companion for planting under bare stems of roses or even vines. It also goes well with lobelia and alyssum in the country. nine0003

Geranium Varieties

Zonal Pelargoniums

Robust, robust and drought tolerant, Zonal Pelargoniums form upright, bushy plants known for their resistance to garden slugs. Single, semi-, and two-flowered varieties are available, so zonal pelargoniums are a great choice for flower beds and for creating containers that will run amok in your dacha all season long.

Ivy Pelargonium

These beautiful cascading ivy-leaved pelargoniums (“ivy-leaved” is a reference to the shape of their fleshy leaves, reminiscent of the foliage of this traditional rock garden) lend longevity to baskets and pots, bloom until the end of the season—and wither long after other summer flower bed favorites.

Royal Pelargoniums

Royal Pelargoniums may bloom earlier than the zonal species and will continue to show throughout the season. These are spectacular, stately plants, known for their double flowers. Basically, such pelargoniums are one-color, but two-color shades are also possible. nine0003

Fragrant leaf geraniums

Fragrant leaf geraniums offer a variety of scents from citrus to lemon and rose. Fragrant cultivars may produce smaller flowers than other species, but these plants have a strong scent (it becomes most intense when allowed to bask in the sun) and a wide variety of foliage forms from variegated to lobed.

Angel Pelargoniums

Angel Pelargoniums are a smaller version of the king varieties. Compact, bushy and cheerful, they are ideal for small spaces such as hanging baskets and small containers. Dark spots on the upper petals of the flowers resemble the characteristic flowers of pansies and violas beloved by everyone. Such geraniums bloom profusely (tie regularly to maintain flowering) and always look advantageous in mixed plantings. nine0003

13 facts about geranium

Native to South Africa

Geranium was brought from South Africa, where more than 250 wild species of this plant still grow. The first geraniums came to Europe only in the 17th century.

Question about Pelargonium (Geranium)

Pelargonium is not actually a member of the Geranium family. For gardeners and botanists, "geranium" means a winter-hardy perennial shrub. To add to the confusion, the popular summer flowers that we all know and love are known as "pelargoniums" among specialists. nine0003

The naming problem arose in the 17th century when the first pelargoniums were brought to Europe and named geraniums because of their resemblance to a perennial plant, and the name "geranium" has been used ever since!

Cultural good and symbol of the country

Several European countries consider geranium an integral part of their culture and a symbol of their homeland. The Swiss have even chosen this easy-to-care blooming beauty as their national flower.

Culinary qualities

Leaves and flowers of fragrant geranium are edible. Thanks to the essential oils contained in the leaves, they add not only a decorative effect, but also a delicate aroma to meat dishes, salads and desserts.

Lemon-scented varieties add zest to salads, sorbets or teas. Pink geranium adds a sophisticated note to puddings, cakes, jams or desserts. Peppermint flavored varieties are a delicious addition to homemade lemonade.

Houseplants

Geraniums not only decorate balconies, terraces and gardens, but also decorate interiors. With proper care, geraniums thrive in a bright spot inside the home. However, most varieties feel at home in a sunny or semi-shaded location outside. nine0003

Stylish room decoration

In particular, the royal geranium was originally cultivated as a houseplant, and it also blends well with modern interiors.

Other types of geraniums, such as angelic and scented geraniums, are also at home in a sunny spot indoors, where they create an unmistakable feeling of summer. Use them as cut flowers too - a few stalks of geraniums in a simple vase will add color to any room. nine0003

Healing properties

Geraniums are not only decorative, some of them have healing properties. Cape Pelargonium roots were used by the indigenous people of South Africa to treat respiratory ailments and are still the main ingredient in Umckaloabo's natural remedy to this day. The essential oils found in certain types of scented geraniums are also believed to help alleviate depression and stress.

Natural insect repellent

Some types of aromatic geraniums can effectively repel insects due to the essential oils contained in their leaves. With the slightest breath of breeze or a light touch, these plants release their fragrance. What might be a pleasant smell for us humans repels mosquitoes, wasps, and other insects. The best insect repellents are geraniums with the scent of lemon and orange.

Huge range of varieties

Most people know geraniums as bright red or white balcony flowers. However, Pelargonium has a huge variety of colors, leaf and flower shapes, sizes and growth patterns. Geraniums bloom not only in red and white, but in many other hues such as pink, purple, lilac, apricot, orange and yellow, as well as a wide range of two-tone options. nine0003

Hardiness

Geraniums are delightfully hardy, easy to care for and long lasting, making them ideal for those who can't or don't want to spend a lot of time caring for their plants. Even those with non-green hands can achieve a beautiful flower arrangement with minimal time and effort.

Record holder

With proper care, Pelargoniums can reach record sizes. There have even been reports of specimens that allegedly reached a height of five meters or a circumference of more than 10 meters. This is probably not for your usual window pot in an apartment. nine0003

Early and Late Blooms

Geraniums can start flowering as early as May, but keep these delicate plants outside until the last frost. Likewise, although geraniums will bloom well into the fall, they are not frost-hardy, so move the plants to a bright, frost-free area to overwinter before nighttime temperatures drop.

Virtually indestructible

Pelargoniums are one of the few summer houseplants that are virtually untouched by slugs and snails. Gardeners can find clams hiding under the bushy foliage of geraniums, but their strong stems and thick, fleshy leaves are not palatable to these plant pests. nine0003

Styling Tip: Block Colors

Planting single color pelargoniums is nothing new, but the sheer variety of shades means you can create a very personal style—think deep burgundy or purple for a darker exposure, or lilac for a bright splash of unusual color. If you're drawn to a white color scheme, try choosing white varieties with splashes of pink or red in the petals. For a classic look, combine with curly ivy. nine0003

Craft Idea: DIY Hanging Chair

Simply disassemble an old wooden chair into its component parts, saw through the seat in the middle and screw the front half to the back so that the edge of the cut is pointing back. Then cover the chair with varnish or paint, hang it up and decorate it with a pot of geraniums and other decorative accessories.

An old wooden chair can be turned into an original hanging shelf that geraniums can take root on. nine0003

Style Tip: Ombre

Choose shades of the same color from light to dark to create a tonal effect. There are a huge number of geranium flowers - think bright orange fading to pale tangerine; or about rich hot pink turning into a gentle blush. Using different tones of the same color creates a sense of depth and visual interest.

Craft Idea: Plant Canopy

Dine al fresco under a canopy of flowers with this DIY recycled idea. Attach jute rope to a gazebo or similar structure, use old bicycle wheels to thread it through the rope, and hang easy-care potted geraniums.

DIY Idea: Bicycle Vertical Garden

Why not use old bicycle wheels and hang them from a fence or wall? This is an attractive way to place colorful flower pots. The pots are simply attached to the spokes with wire. Blooming geraniums of different colors create a spectacular flower arrangement. nine0003

Craft Idea: Hanging Balcony Planter

Create a beautiful balcony display with this hanging planter filled with geraniums. All you need is upright or attached geraniums, terracotta pots with saucers, glue, string, and two round wooden sticks and connecting pieces.

12 movies about slaves and slave owners that will make you think

Slavery and racism are one of those wounds that humanity will have to heal for more than one generation, and pictures about the victims of these nightmares and films about great heroes who fought for freedom and justice are a good way to recall what happened and is happening in the world. The list will include tapes that affect not only blacks, illegally captured and taken to other continents centuries ago, but also modern people who are kidnapped every day in stores, on the streets or gas stations to turn into someone's property. Yes, such stories did not remain in history and occur even in developed countries. Humans never seem to learn to be human. nine0003

12 years of slavery

Most of the heroes from this collection have never known what freedom is. They could not choose what time to get up, where to go, what to do, and from childhood they got used to the status of things. Solomon Northup was more fortunate: he was born into a freedman's family and never belonged to anyone. He started a family, owned his own farm, then moved to the city, played the violin beautifully. But one day the man was simply drugged and sold to slave traders. On that day, Solomon woke up as a free man, the next he woke up as a limp property and soon went into slavery to a southern planter. Far from his family, in terrible conditions, losing pride and hope day after day, Solomon managed not to lose himself and humanity in twelve years of a nightmare. And eventually returned home. nine0003

Based on true events and memoirs of Solomon, which the man released after the refusal of the court to accept the case of the illegal kidnapping and sale of an African American into slavery. The real Northup, after returning home, lectured, talking about slavery through the eyes of a free man, and actively promoted the ideas of abolitionism. And the film about Solomon actively conquered film festivals: the picture has an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Sputnik and Saturn for the best film, and also an Oscar for the best screenplay. nine0003

Trailer:

I am a slave

It would be great if slavery remained a stain on the reputation of mankind, but no: slave traders still kidnap and sell people. And the film will tell about one of the victims of this terrible business, a Sudanese girl Malika. The unfortunate woman spent twelve years in slavery, and they were not much better than Solomon's nightmarish dozen - not so civilized modern world. nine0003

Trailer:

And also about the horrors that are happening right now, tells the German "Slavery" of 2007. The picture is based on a New York Times article that reveals a truth that is hard to believe: the most unremarkable house in the neighborhood can have people turned into half-dead toys to please the rich. Girls are kidnapped from the streets, sold at auctions, intimidated, starved, drugged, deprived of their will and held in appalling conditions. And after death, they simply replace them with new ones, like disposable dishes. In the film, young Jorge, along with a policeman, are trying to save their loved ones, girls abducted by slave traders, but even just finding out anything about the victims is almost impossible. nine0003

Trailer:

Jones County Freemen

Again a movie based on a true story. The American Civil War, 1862, the battle of Corinth is devastating for the southerners. And each loss provoked a drop in morale and desertion (by the way, the KSA army suffered so much from this problem that an entire section on the wiki page of the southerners' army is devoted to unauthorized leave from the Civil War). Newton Knight was one of the deserters, but the war after the Battle of Corinth did not end for Knight. There was nowhere to run: there was devastation everywhere and special units of punishers looking for deserters and preparing gallows for them. So since the Civil War, Newton had to flee to the partisans, and Jones County became an ideal place for the base of the rebels and former slaves who were part of Knight's detachment. In this small area of Mississippi, the proportion of the black population was less than fifteen percent, and white southerners worked on poor farms themselves - why then lag behind the ideas of the Confederacy, whose army began to take the last cattle from small farmers. The war further divided rich planters and poor farmers, whose patience cracked. And Newton Knight skillfully used this split to undermine the army of the southerners from the inside with his guerrilla raids. And then he also married an ex-slave, and this was in Mississippi in the 1860s, where for just words in support of the abolition of slavery and the Union, a farm could be burned down. A worthy daredevil, who quickly earned the fame of the American Robin Hood, and an abolitionist not in words, but in deeds. nine0003

Django Unchained

Slavery is one of the most cruel and shameful phenomena in the history of mankind. And it would even be strange if this topic was not plowed by Quentin Tarantino, who likes to effectively play with cruelty on the screen. And in Django, the director also dabbled with the cast: Christoph Waltz here plays a positive character to infinity, and Leonardo DiCaprio is such a tightly beaten planter, as if he decided to avenge all his previous unfortunate romantics Jacks, Cobbs and Gatsby with one role. If diabolical madness were a person, then this is it. And if demonic evil were a person, then the character of Samuel L. Jackson from this film. Now about the main character - Django. A slave who was freed from his bonds and made his partner by the charming bounty hunter Dr. Schultz. Well, because no one will shoot white scoundrels with such passion as a former slave. Which, moreover, was deliberately divided at one of the auctions with his beloved wife. Django dreams of finding his Broomhilda, and Dr. Schultz, who despises slavery and feels responsible for his partner's life, decides to help his friend. The heroes have to go to Candyland - to a huge plantation where they indulge not with sweets, but with whips, violence and a quiet hour in an iron box dug into the ground under the scorching sun. The attraction is not going to be the most fun, and if Schulz and Django's plan fails, they will be prepared for even tougher entertainment. nine0003

Trailer:

The film was awarded an Oscar for Best Screenplay, and Christopher Waltz walked away from the Golden Man Award for Best Actor. The Golden Globe repeated the Django awards for the older brother, and at the MTV awards, the tape was awarded the award for the craziest episode.

Birth of a nation

The uprising, led by Nat Turner, lasted about forty-eight hours, but it was enough to cause panic among the slave owners. In a couple of days, Nat and his rebels slaughtered sixty whites, and this was enough to make the life of slaves even worse: involuntary people were forbidden to receive education and arrange meetings. The instigator himself was found, executed and skinned, but Nat did the main thing: he made the white people see that the slaves would not endure forever. nine0003

In the film, there will be cruelties for the most sophisticated emotional masochists: a father sacrificing himself for a starving son, sexual abuse of slaves, beatings, manipulation of a starving, oppressed people. And worst of all, it's all based on real events.

Trailer:

Harriet

Harriet Tubman is a great woman. She escaped from slavery, got a job as a maid and spent most of the money on the release of other slaves. Even before the outbreak of the Civil War, Harriet earned the nickname "Moses" for her nightly rescue missions and took several hundred slaves from the plantations. And the number of those inspired to escape by the example of Harriet was measured in thousands. For her head, which at the age of thirteen flew a kilogram weight from a white overseer, a reward of twelve thousand dollars was appointed, but they could not catch Tubman - she did not make mistakes. As well as inaction: during the war, the savior bravely worked on the side of the Union as a nurse, cook and scout and became the first woman to lead an armed expedition. Even after the abolition of slavery and the victory of the Union, Harriet did not stop in her struggle for freedom and sent her forces to support women's suffrage activists. And Harriet Tubman is the most supported candidate for printing on the twenty-dollar bill: let her exploits diverge to the masses. nine0003

Trailer:

The film received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress and Best Song.

Freedom

Even Batman needed the League sometimes, and Harriet Tubman couldn't have accomplished her feat alone. Slaves were rescued and taken to Canada through the Underground Railroad, an underground organization that provided escapes and transportation of slaves. Through it, Samuel Woodward and his family run from a plantation in Virginia. And the trail of slaves is immediately taken by an experienced fugitive hunter Plimpton. It will not be easy for the Woodward family, but on their way to freedom, they will meet kind people who are ready to help the sufferers. And sometimes one outstretched helping hand gives strength to accomplish a real feat. For example, to give up revenge is a difficult decision when behind you are generations of pain, humiliation and a continuous nightmare. nine0003

Sugar price

Rich, spoiled white girl Sarriet is blinded by her own ego and does not notice at all what a monster she becomes with age. However, in a world of monstrous injustice, it is not difficult at all to become a monster: Sarriet lives in Suriname, a country in South America, which was a Dutch colony in the 18th century. Suriname was colonized by the British, but they gave it to the Netherlands in exchange for New Amsterdam - modern New York. Now the exchange seems to be disadvantageous for the British, but three centuries ago Suriname was the main supplier of sugar in Europe. Africans were brought into the country to work on plantations, so the slave trade in Suriname also flourished. Sarriet grew up side by side with her half-sister, Mini-Mini, a girl born as a black slave from her master. Mini-Mini from childhood brought Sarriet breakfasts, took out the pot for her sister, dressed her and in general was the shadow of the first beauty of the colony. And she always sincerely loved her mistress, so that she did not get up. And Sarriet always knew how to surprise her sister with another cruel or infantile trick. And, oddly enough, in this story, everyone will eventually get what they deserve. nine0003

Trailer:

In the film, the life of the unfortunate slaves is shown in detail. Slaves do not have the right to wear shoes and ride in carriages, so they knock down their legs following the cards of their masters. Slaves do not sleep on beds, do not eat at the table, do not wear clothes other than bandages, do not go to balls and do not know how to read books, but with their hellish labor they provide all these benefits to their self-proclaimed masters. And they remain kind people, capable of compassion, courage and love. You can buy a person, but not humanity - and after all, many white rich people urgently need the latter. nine0003

Price of sugar

A documentary of the same name to the previous one, where slavery is not a monument to inhumanity, but a living disease that still parasitizes. They will show how, in the heavenly landscapes of the Dominican Republic, Haitians work fourteen hours a day under the sun, extracting sugar, so that tourists smile more widely at desserts on the buffet. As expected, the audience will go for a walk through hell not alone, but with a guide - a Spanish priest who supports the Haitians and inspires them to change their lives. nine0003

Mandingo

A film in which the rape scene is given as an aperitif at the beginning of the story - there will be no inspiring characters and happy endings here. Well, immediately a remark for those who do not remember Django Unchained well: Mandingos are gladiator slaves from the African tribe of the same name. Strong and hardy Mandingos were bought as expensive thoroughbred dogs to brag to their neighbors. For Tarantino, Mandingo fights are a separate entertainment that, in fact, rather did not exist. People were valuable enough property, and Tarantino, according to one version, borrowed the idea with Mandingo fights just from the movie 1975th.

The protagonist is Hammond, son of the despotic planter Warren Maxwell. Daddy wants grandchildren, but son shows no interest in decent white girls and has fun with slaves instead. Unforgivable infantilism - to delay the wedding. Hammond, in order to get rid of his father, marries his cousin Blanche, but the passion for one of the slaves does not leave, and it is easier for Hammond to build a relationship with an involuntary girl. The wife begins to get bored, and a bored woman with a bad temper is scary. Blanche, seeing her husband's interest in a black girl, decides to strengthen such relationships as a family tradition and actually rapes the best Mandingo fighter bought by her husband. Well, then a round tummy, an exciting expectation and a surprised grandfather's face - the child clearly did not look like the heir to his lands. The surprised grandfather will not be long, and the wrath of the rich despot will lead to a tragic ending. nine0003

Roots

1765 year. African guy Kunta Kinta from the Mandingo tribe is fifteen years old. Now is the time to explore the world, to learn, to learn more about yourself and about people, to dream. For Kunt, this time was the worst in life, but the guy learned something very important for himself: white people are evil. The hero is kidnapped and sold into slavery on an American plantation. There, Kinta becomes Toby, but the new name did not change the stubborn and strong character of Mandingo - the guy did not stop trying to escape, and once he succeeded. Even if not for long - they catch, return, punish. But neither physical torture, nor humiliation, nor even time will break the spirit of the Mandingo - the descendants of Kunt will fight for their pride and freedom, and none of them will give up until the Thirteenth Amendment. One family, four generations, one hundred years of struggle. nine0003

Amistad

Some ethics of the first half of the 19th century. What was possible: to come to a foreign country, kidnap the local population, put fetters on them, declare yourself their master simply because, sell to another master, live happily and richly on other people's corpses and ruined lives. What was not possible: to win back your life from foreign invaders and try to return home. The picture is terrible, and the details are even worse. Senge Pye (in the film his name is Sinke) lived peacefully in Sierra Leone, cultivated his rice field, fed his family with his labor, professed Islam, and then they simply took him and declared him a slave, put him on a ship and took him away from home. Everybody. No field, no wife, no children, no rights, nothing. Senge did not put up with this and, after transferring from the Portuguese ship to the Spanish "Amistad", raised an uprising: the Africans killed their "masters" and left only two whites alive to help the captured return home. But instead of the shores of Africa, the slaves soon saw a port off Long Island. The situation turned out to be complicated: the events took place in 1839-m, and by that time the enslavement of African peoples was illegal. The Spanish survivors knew this, and the US military was told that the Africans brought on the Amistad were already slaves at the time of purchase. And the difficulty was that by recognizing the freedom of blacks in court, the American government risked not only spoiling relations with Spain, but also inspiring their own abolitionists and slaves to revolt. In short, everything was clearly playing against the unfortunate prisoners of Amistad, but the more valuable the happy ending of this story. Well, relatively happy, because in life, according to some historians, Senge Pie eventually lost his family and became a slave trader himself. nine0003
