Painting designs for bedrooms

10 easy ways to update walls and more |

Paint gives you the power to transform any space quickly and easily, but when it comes to bedroom paint ideas, a change of wall color isn’t the only option available. Bedroom furniture and floors are easy to spruce up with a cheery coat of paint, while painting woodwork, paneling and accent features are all wonderful ways of giving a tired bedroom new focus.

When it comes to bedroom color ideas, the tone you choose can have a huge impact on the overall mood and feeling of the space - from dark, seductive tones that add atmosphere and depth, to bright, zingy shades that can refresh and revitalise.

‘Paint is the quickest and most effective way to add instant impact and change the mood and atmosphere of a room,’ says Justyna Korczynska, Senior Designer at Crown Paints . ‘The darker the color the more light it absorbs – so reds, plums and terracottas will visually bring walls inwards, making a room look warm and inviting. Or opt for soothing natural tones that create an instant feeling of tranquility and calm, if you want to create a peaceful oasis where you can relax and unwind.

‘As a nation we are all getting braver with color and much more creative with it too, so one color on the walls just isn’t enough anymore,’ says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux , ‘and the wonderful thing about paint is that the results you get from it are instant.

‘If you don’t fancy a complete makeover or live in an apartment you can’t decorate, paint up some canvases in colors you love and use them to add life to the walls. It can tie all your belongings together for a harmonious look and you can change them whenever you fancy with a simple affordable tester pot.’

1. Paint the bed to add a bold pop of color

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Brown)

Whether in the bedroom, or considering paint ideas for every room, painting a focal point piece of furniture in a bold, eye-catching color is a fabulous way of refreshing a room that lacks focus and energy.

The bed is a prime candidate for a makeover in any bedroom, from a simple wooden bed frame to a statement four-poster. Choose a bright, standout paint color for best effect, but one that complements or contrasts with the rest of the bedroom decor. Bold, sunny yellow sits perfectly with fresh green floral fabrics and wallpaper and can help to refresh and revitalise the room instantly.

2. Add impact with painted panelling

(Image credit: Future PLC / Emma Lee)

Bedroom wall decor ideas can range from simple tricks to more elaborate ideas and makeovers. Paneling ideas for walls are a popular way to add character and color to walls and by focusing on the wall behind the bed, it won’t require a complete room redo if you’re after an easier update.

Consider cladding halfway or three-quarters the height of your wall and paneling paint ideas in a bold, standout shade. With a vibrant, co-ordinating headboard and bedding, it can create a focal point in a room that's lacking in architectural details. Panelling can add a practical element too, allowing wall light wiring to be hidden away and creating a display shelf for decorative pieces.

‘Working with bold, dark colors should be all about balance,’ says Justyna Korczynska, Senior Designer at Crown Paints .  ‘Always make sure you incorporate neutral and pale features into the room, whether that’s through furniture, accessories or other paint colors, that will light up the space. And if you’re painting the walls in a deep shade, make sure you paint the ceiling a crisp white and opt for light wooden flooring or carpet to balance out the effect.’

3. Use inky tones to transform woodwork

Instead of keeping to standard whites and neutrals for furniture and trims, be braver and plump for a more colorful option on woodwork. Revamp a tired closet by painting it a more vibrant shade. And if paneled doors are looking shabby, why not consider replacing them with woven cane or hessian panels to add an on-trend look?

Blue bedroom ideas can create a calming and restful backdrop that is perfect for a space where you want to unwind. And while blue is often regarded as a cold color, teaming it with warmer sand, caramel and tan tones, will take off the chill and add heat and warmth.

‘This inky teal is a beautiful color that instantly feels sophisticated and calming,’ says Katie Lion, an interior designer with Kitesgrove . ‘We didn’t want to take over the room, so we limited its use to the headboard, cushions and built-in cupboards, then used a paler blue for the walls and ceiling which helps the room feel light and balances the darker tones,’ perfect for bedroom ceiling ideas.

4. Try painting bedroom walls halfway

Using all-over color in a bedroom can often be overwhelming in a space where you want to feel calm and relaxed. However a bedroom without any color or contrast can feel flat and lifeless if not done thoughtfully. Strike a happy compromise, by trying a half-and-half paint treatment that will give you the best of both worlds, a great option for bedroom accent wall paint ideas.

While red bedroom ideas are a brilliant way of bringing warmth and richness to a room, balancing red with calmer, neutral tones, will soften the effect so that red doesn’t dominate the room. Paint timber panelling or plain plastered walls halfway in a warm, earthy terracotta or red, teamed with a neutral tone on the top section of wall. Having a darker color at the bottom will help to ground the room and provides a contrast backdrop for the bed and bedding.

‘Luxurious and opulent, red tones can be used to create a scheme with real impact,’ says Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director Little Greene . ‘From our deep, muted 'Tuscan Red' used here, to more vibrant reds or sophisticated pale pinks.’

5. Paint alcoves a decadent shade

Dark bedrooms can feel cozy and cocooning, but if dark walls throughout feel too intense, introduce just a small hit of color by focusing on an accent area instead. Painting inside an alcove or around a recess in a dark, moody shade will add instant impact and is a clever idea for a breakaway space in which to set a dressing table or desk. A dark background will make luxe metallics and display items stand out and sparkle more too.

‘Layering colors together and allowing one color to meet another just beyond the corner of the room has an amazing effect on a space,’ says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux . ‘It makes a room feel less like a box and more like a gallery for the things in your life that you really care about, including your favourite colors. Use one color as a predominant backdrop and then add painted details in colors which are inspired by the things that are staying in the room.’

6. Bring balance with patterns and plains

Try a combination of painted panelling and pretty wallpaper to add color and pattern to a plain bedroom. Adding just a few panels of a pretty floral wallpaper or jazzy geometric set into plain paintwork is a lovely way of adding visual interest without the pattern dominating or overpowering the room. And as only a few lengths of wallpaper are all that’s required, it can be a clever way of introducing a favourite pattern or costly print without having to spend a fortune.

Color match your bedroom paint and wallpaper by choosing a shade from within the wallpaper design for your paint color, which will help to link the two for a co-ordinated look.

7. Upcycle a plain piece with pearl detailing

Painting bedroom furniture in a fresh new color is a lovely way of breathing life into pre-loved pieces or thrift shop buys that are looking past their best. An easy option that cuts out the prep work is to use chalk paint for the job. Chalk paint is self-levelling and self-sealing, so gives excellent coverage with minimal effort.

Painting a wardrobe, chest of drawers or bedside tables, shouldn’t be too difficult a project for a beginner. A bold color, such as black or navy on the exterior will pop with the interior painted in a vibrant contrast color such as hot pink or lipstick red.

Go one better and create a decorative pearlized treatment by painting on a stencilled or freehand design on doors, drawers and side panels. Use contrast white chalk paint to apply your pattern and then add a pearlescent glaze as a final top coat, which will give a subtle shimmer and create an inlaid pearl effect.

8. Put the focus on the floor

(Image credit: Paint & Paper Library/Isabelle Lomas)

While walls and furniture are easy to spruce up with a fresh coat of paint, floorboards are another option worth considering and can make a big impact in a small space or plain bedroom. A slightly unconventional choice, similar to ceiling paint ideas, thoughtfully focusing on your flooring can create a stylish, cohesive effect.

Timber floor boards that are worn and shabby can be revitalized with a coat of varnish or floor paint or try an eye-catching checkerboard effect combining paint and lacquered boards for a little extra time and effort. Floorboards should be cleaned and sanded lightly first, but then all that’s required is a pencil, tape measure and masking tape to ensure that you achieve neat lines. Once painted, simply protect your design with a coat of clear lacquer.

Interior designer, Isabelle Lomas , created this fun checkerboard floor for a children’s bedroom. ‘We kept the walls plain,’ says Isabelle, who used Willow V from Paint and paper library. ‘This allowed us to incorporate a checkerboard pattern on the floor – a fun element that is also hardwearing.’

9. Paint curves in a dressing room

Boxy bedrooms or rooms that lack any original architectural details can often feel plain and featureless. A clever visual trick can be to use paint to create a ‘faux’ feature or accent detail that will then give the room a focal point.

Create a vanity area in a bedroom alcove or recess by painting an arched panel on the wall in contrast-colored paint. Position a dressing table or console against the wall, with the painted area acting as a backdrop to showcase furniture and decorative pieces. Add a circular mirror and curved chair to emphasise the shape of the archway and add a stylish finishing flourish.

Use a pencil, length of string and a thumb tack to help mark out a semicircle on the wall, before filling it in with paint.

10. Create a faux headboard with cheery paintwork

Looking for easy ways to brighten up plain white bedroom ideas? Put the focus on the bed by creating a faux headboard effect using contrast-colored paint. A simple way of giving an unfussy wooden bedstead more prominence, painting the wall behind the bed will create the effect of a super-sized headboard that will in turn become the focal point of the bedroom.

Create headboard ideas like this by simply painting the surrounding wall area in your chosen paint color so that it frames the bed in a block effect. Adding a length of wooden trim painted a dark accent color as contrast edging will help to further emphasize the effect.

Tie in your color theme by choosing a bedroom paint color that complements your bedding and soft furnishings. Be inspired by green bedroom ideas and bring in lots of leafy plants and foliage to decorate. Green can have a calming, restorative effect, so is a perfect choice for bedrooms.

Which color paint is best for a bedroom?

Choosing a paint color for your bedroom boils down to personal preference, but there are some colors that work better than others.

‘Green is known to calm the mind and provide a restful backdrop,’ say the paint experts at Lick . ‘While calming blue is another color that will create a soothing bedroom vibe and a restful night’s sleep.

‘And far from being boring, white bedroom paint will act as an all-over base with a neutral palette that leaves you free to play about with natural woods, prints and plant life.

‘Darker purple can induce vivid dreams, while lilac is a more blissful shade. And for a more energetic color, pink is a shade that will have you bouncing out of bed.’

Should bedrooms be painted dark or light?

The paint colors used in a bedroom can depend on the size of the space and what type of lighting there is. A large bedroom with lots of natural light can benefit from either a light or dark color scheme.

And while it might be tempting to opt for light paint colors in a small, dark bedroom, that’s not always the best choice. In a light-starved space, stronger colors can often work better, helping to add depth to a room and make it feel cozier.

‘Dark colors have become more mainstream,’ says Justyna Korczynska, Senior Designer at Crown Paints. ‘Charcoal can really give a room a feeling of luxury and sophistication and works surprisingly well in a small area to give it some grandeur.

‘People are often reserved about using dark colors in their homes but they really shouldn’t be. Bold, dark shades have an incredible power and are able to transform any room injecting character into it. A good way to start introducing a darker shade in your home is to decorate one of the smaller rooms, that are used for shorter period of time, like a hallway, bathroom or bedroom.’

Bedroom paint ideas

Try painting the whole room in one colour, walls, skirting, ceiling, cupboards, radiators and even window frames, to create a cocooning effect. Introduce rich textures in upholstery, quilted throws and comfy knits, layering these elements throughout the room for a warm and welcoming feel.

1. Repeat tones of the same colour

'The repetition of a central colour will help enhance the mood you are trying to convey,' says Justyna Korczynska, Colour Consultant at Crown. 'Paint several walls the same colour of varying tones, or connect the colour through the room with matching accessories. Get creative with DIY by painting a plant holder or a chair in a similar shade to emphasise the tone of the bedroom. The theme can be further enhanced by the use of textiles in the room, for instance in the choose of bedding, or a colour matched rug or blanket.'

2. Create a striking headboard

If you’re tight on space (or budget), creating a hand painted headboard is a super affordable, easy way to transform a bedroom wall. Keep things simple with a panel of colour for your chosen bedroom colour scheme that can be easily changed, moved or erased. It's a cheaper and less bulky alternative to an upholstered headboard. Choose any paint colour that you fancy, so you can really make it work with your style and scheme. For added interest position a wall light as if it were attached to a real headboard

3. Go for a painterly effect

This is a great paint ideas trick that makes your ceilings seem higher. Choose a colour on the base but then bleed into white and continue the white onto the ceiling, so that your eye doesn't know where the wall ends and the ceiling begins. Paint the bottom in a colour also gives a more cocooning feel when you’re in bed, but the room will remain light and fresh, thanks to the white. Use a roller to paint the bottom half of the walls in the darker colour, finishing the top edge with rough upward strokes of a paintbrush.

Make more of a favourite painting or print by colouring a border around the frame. Use masking tape to mark out a square 8-10cm bigger than your frame and colour it in with leftover paint. Remove the tape and, when the paint’s dry, rehang the picture.

4. Try two-tones of the same colour

A 'half wall' or a 'split wall' is the description given to painting a wall two colours and dividing them with a crisp line. Painting your wall with two colours is an easy way to give the illusion of a higher or a lower ceiling. To add height to a room, use a darker shade on the bottom half where the heavier colour grounds the room and the lighter colour draws the eye up. Or vice -versa, with the darker colour giving the appearance of a lower ceiling and therefore a cosier, more cocooning room. Worried about how to paint a two tone wall? Don't worry, we promise it's easy!

This trick has the benefit of allowing you to use bold colour without overwhelming your space. It also adds an on-trend graphic edge. Don’t feel you must place the horizontal line in the exact centre, it can be split into thirds, or anywhere you feel the split sits comfortably within your eyeline.

5. Evoke the feeling of a night sky

Pale rooms can seem chilly and unwelcoming, especially in artificial light. By painting the ceiling in a deep colour you can really cosy up a bedroom with high ceilings. The paint colour helps bring the ceiling down, fooling the eye into thinking the room is smaller and more intimate. Medium to dark, rich and deep colours such as navy blue and chocolate brown on ceilings warm up the space and make it feel cosy.

So, let's look at how to paint a ceiling. If you have a picture rail, bring the colour down from the ceiling onto the top part of the wall above the rail, this will bring the ceiling down further for a more cocooning feel. Painting a ceiling, or the fifth wall as its sometimes referred to,  can add another dimension and character to any room. Here it provides impact to an otherwise plain room.

6. Go for a geometric feature wall

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Dominic Blackmore)

Let the colours from a patterned textile or a piece of art inspire your design. This simple Scandi-style scheme is all about sugary pastel shades. When choosing colours that will sit directly adjacent to each other make sure they are from the same 'tonal family' - so all the colours have the same amount of white and  black in them. This means they'll sit together flawlessly. Keep furniture simple like with this grey marl upholstered bed and painted side table. That way, the feature wall remains the hero in the room.

7. Give a wall its stripes

Inject a dose of understated elegance and sophistication into your bedroom by painting bold stripes in blush pink and white. A pink bedroom idea that earns serious style point, stripes on walls and fabrics bring a classic feel to any room and transform a bland bedroom into one with a boutique hotel vibe. Choose from tailored pinstripes or bold broad lines, in either horizontal or vertical stripes to bring order and structure to a space.

In a bedroom stripes work best in soft, pretty shades such as pale pinks, blues and greens. Pair them with white for a crisp, smart feel. Incorporate the woodwork into your stripes by painting the bottom stripe white, so that skirtings can be integrated into the white stripe with ease. Finish by layering silk and satin bedlinen for a sophisticated and glamorous space.

8. Create a cocooning canopy

Paint an area from behind the bed, over and onto the ceiling - creating a canopy of colour. Paint behind the total width of the headboard, adding 3 or 4 inches to either side, so the paint line is visible. Try a shallow canopy onto the ceiling for ease, or continue over the whole length of the bed for added impact. Use tones of chocolate, coffee and caramel in the bedroom to create a warm and restful scheme, mixing velvets, slub linens and textural cottons to add create a wonderfully welcoming scheme.

9. Fake a headboard with paint

A great way to get the look on a budget is by using paint in place of buying a colourful headboard. This fine example of a DIY headboard idea by the team at Crown shows how a little imagination can transform your bedroom scheme. Carefully pencil out your chosen shape onto the wall ready to create a defining line using masking tape.

10. Be bold with block colour

Using a statement accent shade to create blocks of colour has become a popular way to inject a touch of vibrancy to a bedroom. Using a thick masking tape section off a block shape you wish to paint in your chosen colour. Allow it to dry throughly before very carefully peeling the tape off to reveal an impactful injection of colour to your bedroom paint scheme. A bust of sunshine yellow is ideal to awake the senses and create a happy vibe. It looks great in this white bedroom, but would work equally as well in a grey bedroom idea.

11. Add accent colour as a border

(Image credit: Future PLC /Douglas Gibb)

'Use natural breaks such as corners, alcoves, shelving, dado or picture rails to start and stop the different colour choices' advises Judy. Using a deep dusky pink in the middle scetion alone allows this bedroom to feature a dominate colour, without it feeling overwhelming. The contrast is balanced with the help of crisp white bedding to echo the white ceiling and wood panelling featured on the lower half of the wall.

12. Create interest using a variety of coordinating colours

Why go for one bedroom paint colour when you can create a canopy of colours, that all serve a different purpose with the scheme. Use your first choice of colour to paint the majority of the walls. If choosing how to paint skirting boards we suggest using this same shade here, too. Using a darker gradient of the shade block out a painted section in place of a headboard. Work with a lighter variation of the wall colour to pick out the wood work, such as window surrounds and shutters. Then to add further interest use a completely different colour, but one with the same warmth, to paint a picture rail-like panel at the top of the wall to frame the space.

13. Use different tones to divide the room

Create elements of architectural interest such as a dado rail by combining two different colour choices, to form a clearly defined line. Paint up to a half way level in the more dominate of the two colours, mask with tape and then paint above in the alternative shade. This paint idea helps to create the illusion of the walls being more generous in height, which can prove masterful when decorating smaller rooms.

14. Add texture with thoughtful paint effects

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC /Dominic Blackmore)

If you're looking to really make an impact with your paint choice try using bold paint effects, which can add depth to any colour scheme, even neutral bedroom ideas. By carefully mixing two colours, in this case neutrals, from the same colour strip you can create a textured effect for your walls. This skilful painting method is a great way to make a statement without having to use pattern or shouty saturated colours.

This textured paint effect on the walls is painted in Stone III and Stone V pure flat emulsion, both by Paint & Paper Library. The muted tones are offset against the strong contrast of the black wall lights and side table, while hints of orange and blue-grey on soft furnishings inject a warming, softer quality.

15. Make a feature of a picture rail

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ Dan Duchars)

Create the illusion of ceiling height by painting above a picture rail. This simple, yet clever splash of colour helps to draw the eye up, stretching the walls up. It works best with bare walls, rather than decorated with bedroom wallpaper ideas and pictures. Choose a bright colour to make even more of a statement.

16. Go deep blue for a cosy, moody look

Struggling to sleep? Get yourself a couple of pots of deep blue paint pronto. Dark inky shades like this will help you switch off after a long day in front of a computer screen – just make sure you banish your devices, too.

When using such a deep blue it's important to break it up with pale wooden furniture and lighter linens so that the room appears cosy and cocooning – rather than bleak and oppressive.

17. Try balancing a look with on-trend pink and grey

Children's bedrooms are the ideal canvas on which to experiment with paint effects. All you need is a decent masking tape to help you achieve those crisp lines – we rate Frog Tape every time. You could create 'mountain peaks' across the wall, or something simpler. If the room is being shared like this one, you could even use paint to demarcate whose bit of the room is whose. Keep the kids happy with our children's room ideas

18. Add just a dash of yellow for a sunny bedroom

(Image credit: Future PLC /Colin Poole)

Channel positivity with this dynamic colour accent. Yellow isn't always the best colour in a bedroom as we associate it with danger – especially in conjunction with black – which is hardly a good ingredient for a proper night's sleep. But used sparingly against a calming neutral, it's a veritable dose of sunshine. Together, the two tones bring life to a neutral base and brighten a light-starved space.

19. Paint the coving to match the walls

(Image credit: Future PLC /Olly Gordon)

Carrying a colour up the wall and onto the architrave makes the ceiling feel higher and a room feel grander. It's a clever trick, particularly if you live in a house built in the 1980s or 1990s, where ceilings could be particularly low.

If you're looking for a colour that will work with dark wooden bedroom furniture, a deep blue or green is ideal. Teal bedroom ideas have the effect of making the wood seem less 'heavy' and old-fashioned, which it might against a lighter grey or white, but still allows the furniture to pop.

20. Match curtains and walls in refreshing green

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC /Simon Whitmore)

According to research, green is the best colour to paint a bedroom (a good plan if aiming to avoid the colour not to paint a bedroom).  A green shade along the lines of this soothing mint is perfect. Enhance the impact as a backdrop by choosing curtains in exactly the same colour. That way, you'll have less of a headache when picking bedlinen as you'll only have one colour that blankets and cushions will need to coordinate with, and a freedom to experiment with pattern. Green bedroom ideas are sure to make for a serene sleep space.

21. Apply a geometric wall mural

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ Georgia Burns)

Work out the highest point of the mural, aiming for it to be off-centre from the headboard. Using a long, straight edge, draw the first mountain shape in pencil, adding more either side. Use Frog Tape to cover your pencil outlines and to criss cross random shapes within the mountain peak.

Next, pick three tonal colours of matt emulsion, starting with the darkest at the bottom and working up to the lightest. When the paint is dry (apply two coats if needs be) peel the tape away to reveal your mural.

22. Create a pink plaster effect

(Image credit: Future PLC /Dominic Blackmore)

Back in the 1990s, paint effects were the height of sophistication when it came to how to paint a wall. They featured in pretty much every episode of the original Changing Rooms, with plenty of us attempting to recreate the looks (not always so successfully) at home.

Then the Noughties arrived and our sponges and Fleur de Lis stencils were relegated to the loft. but could they be making a comeback? Maybe not the stencilling just yet, but a sponge is just what you need to create on-trend plaster effect or Ombre. Start with a base of pinkish white, then slowly build patches of blush pink and coral, going dark to light across the wall. Or you could cheat and use a wallpaper mural!

23. Paint a mellow feature wall

(Image credit: Future Publishing PLC/ David Giles)

Change the mood of a white bedroom idea by painting just one wall in an accent colour. Choose your wall well, and make sure the surface of the wall you opt for is in a good enough condition to have attention drawn to it. Sage green is a great colour for when you want to unwind, so using it in the bedroom will create a soothing vibe.

A feature wall is easy to repaint when you fancy a change, so you can be as experimental as you like with your colour choice. Just be aware, on-trend darker shades like navy or charcoal grey might require an extra coat to cover – worth considering when perusing the paint chart.

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Bevan)

We love a feature wallpaper here at Ideal Home. But we appreciate that they can be expensive. If you're looking to cut the cost but don't want to be restricted to a single feature wall, try this neat trick instead. Choose your print, then find a paint that either matches the backdrop or coordinates with the pattern – the teal used here falls into the latter category. Then paint the bottom third of the wall in that colour and paper the top two thirds. You should save one or two rolls' worth!

25. Use paint to zone your bedroom

(Image credit: Publishing PLC/ David Giles)

Paint is also a great way to create zones or section off an area of a room. Here, olive green demarcates a dressing and study area, whereas the area behind the bed has been decorated with a paler wallpaper. This attic room is flooded with light from floor-to-celiling windows, so it can take such a dark colour.

Which paint finish is best for a bedroom?

Matt paint is perfect for the bedroom. A flat matt paint is often chosen for bedrooms, over areas like hallways or living rooms, as a bedroom wall rarely needs to be heavily cleaned.  Flat paint finishes such a matt emulsion are less reflective than those with a sheen, such as silk or eggshell, and so the colour will look stronger and truer and it's also great at hiding any imperfections or textures on wall surfaces. Due to a flat paint colour reflecting less light, it will also have a more calming and soothing effect within the room.

What are the best colours to paint a bedroom?

According to Justyna Korczynska, Colour Consultant at Crown,"there are many well-known theories surrounding colour psychology and how colours can evoke physical and psychological responses. When decorating the bedroom, it's important to choose a colour that resonates with you. Consider how a colour makes you feel, if it would help you unwind, or alternatively help you wake-up in the morning. Cool colours from nature such as blue and green tend to be restful, whereas warmer colours like yellow and orange tend to be more stimulating"

So it's important to choose colours that appeal to your taste but also create a scheme that will be conducive to sleep. Colours that have been proven to reduce stress and soothe the nervous system are blues, greens, yellow, orange and pink. Try to stick with neutral or pastel shades for a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

How do I create a painted arch in a bedroom?

Here's what the experts at Dulux suggest:

  1. Apply your background colour first, using a roller to cover a large surface area. Once the paint is completely dry (this can take from 2-4 hours), you’re ready to start your arch.
  2. First, cut a long length of string and attach keys to one end.
  3. Use masking tape, stick the string to the wall at the right height for the side of your arch. Cover the string with chalk and ping against the wall to make a chalk-line guide. Mask along this line with tape.
  4. Decide on the width of your arch and, using a spirit level, make a mark for the top of the other side at the same height. Repeat the process above.
  5. Measure the gap between the two sides and mark the mid-point.
  6. Attach a pencil to the end of a length of string. Pin the string at the mid-point between the two sides so that the pencil reaches the top of both side lines.
  7. Draw a semi-circle to form the top of your arch, then carefully paint the outline using a paintbrush. Fill in the rest of the arch using a roller.
  8. Gently remove the masking tape while the paint is still slightly wet.

Bedroom design 14 sq m, interior photo

Television at all times has been a happy occasion for "going out". This story is not about the interior, but about the history of relationships. A cozy bedroom of 14 meters, the design of which we will show you, appeared as part of a television project that became a great test for the designer. Without serious recommendations and an impressive portfolio, it is very difficult to get on the screen. But sometimes there are exceptions, as happened with Denis Furmanov. Vladislav Makhimovich, a partner in the supply of antique fireplaces, proposed his candidacy to replace the designer (who unexpectedly abandoned the project). Denis decided: "Why not," and took up the project.

The idea for decorating the room was inspired by the facades of the building, designed in the classics with elements of the style of Palladio, one of the main architects and theorists of the Renaissance: the author of the design project for a 14 sq.m bedroom decided to include these details in the decoration, but give them a more relevant sound .

About the project
Location:
Townhouse in Sukhanovo, Moscow region
Size: Area bedrooms - 14 sq. m
Who lives here: Married couple

Denis Furmanov

“The project on the channel is approved by a team of seven people, and it was necessary to please everyone. Development took only two days, finishing work began soon. The interior of the bedroom of 14 sq.m was waiting for significant changes. I decided to act outside the box and invited contractors who were previously unknown, but interesting, to the project, taking advantage of the good opportunity to test them in action,” says Denis.

Before starting work on the interior of the bedroom in the three-story townhouse, the designer met with the owners just once to ask about their tastes; the customer wanted to see light walls and a high headboard in the bedroom, and the customer just asked to do without wallpaper. “I prefer to solve small rooms in cool shades - it visually expands the room. I crush the walls as much as possible with finishing materials - this is how the room looks larger, ”Denis shares his approach.

Denis Furmanov

By the beginning of work in the bedroom, a partition behind the headboard for the dressing room had already been erected, but Denis suggested resolving the issue of organizing the space in a different way. The photo shows the design of the renovated bedroom according to Furmanov: the wall was demolished, and in its place a niche for a bed with side cabinets appeared, and both the “male” and “female” storage systems have a width of 87 cm. Niches with sockets for storage of small things.

“Designers usually focus on the headboard, but I decided to focus on the sides of it. Unusual niches above Palladio-style cabinets are decorated with décor made from improvised materials from the Peredvizhnik store — gypsum balls and carved wooden coasters,” said the author of the project.

Denis Furmanov

“In order to create a modern and refined interior, I took the American wallpaper Callidus Guild as a basis. I needed to give dynamics to a room with bright symmetry with the help of a graphic drawing. These are unique canvases, hand-painted with voluminous strokes - they decorate Chanel boutiques around the world, - said Denis. “Of course, I didn’t have the money or the time to deliver. I decided to invite decorator Kristina Shkvarina to recreate this unique technique, and she did an excellent job.”

The bed was made by Toris according to the designer's sketches. “A slight difficulty arose in connection with the need to make a high base with an opening mechanism. I believe that for greater comfort, the height of the mattress from the floor should be at least 50 cm, this is a heavy load for the mechanism. To my surprise, the quality of the product from the Russian manufacturer was on top. I found the fabric at the Mebelliery company,” Denis said.

Grey-green natural French-style daybed and armchair purchased from Marc&Aurele. “I love mixing different wood finishes. It gives comfort. A special pride for the designer is the creation of a unique product. This role was assigned to the mirror: I gave it complex architectural forms, consonant with the headboard. This mirror was made by IFdecor,” Denis shared.

At the request of the characters, placing a TV in the bedroom was not easy. Designers are careful about when the TV panel stands out against the background of the selected shades. In order not to disturb the harmony of the interior, we had to recreate the box behind the sliding panels, in which the TV screen was hidden.

The panels were finished with veneer with a layout in the form of envelopes, and framed watercolors appeared on the sides of the portal - these are sketches of Oscar de la Renta outfits, which were drawn by Ksenia Batagova.

“Mood in my projects is mainly created by fabrics. The girls from Cucumbers approached this task responsibly and found expensive Kravet fabrics in the remnants of their partners "Kado", which happens very rarely. Many pillows were cut from Schumacher fabric samples, and strips of the same material used to trim the pillows were cut into the drapes. Such an insignificant detail is very important, it emphasizes that the textiles are made to order, and not accidentally bought in a store,” the author of the project shared.

“A ceiling lamp resembling a flower with huge petals was found at Barcelona Design. He “made friends” with the stripes on the wall, and the sconces with a complex double shade gave an amazing play of shadows. A table lamp with graphic stripes gave lightness to major furniture.

I hung an art object between the windows, which I made with my own hands from wooden rods interspersed with Indian metal jewelry,” according to Denis, he was inspired to create this object by the work of sculptor Curtis Jere.

The feature of this bedroom is yellow color and painting in the form of a cat — INMYROOM

Tamara Vorontsova and Olga Uglova from the Svoi Design studio designed a bright and cheerful bedroom interior of 18 sq. m in a country house for charismatic and modern customers. The husband is a TV presenter, the wife is an entrepreneur. The main thing when working with this project was to meet the deadline - there was one month for rework. The customers went on vacation and planned to return with a completed renovation and a fully finished and decorated bedroom.

The main character of the concept, the cat on the wall, was chosen by the designers for a reason. “Before starting work, our clients always fill out a brief that contains non-standard questions. When asked what animal they associate themselves with, the customers unanimously answered that they are cats. Of course, we could not but use this interesting detail in the interior. The artist drew a cat based on our author's sketch - he has bright yellow glasses in the pop art style, ”the authors of the project say.

The headboard is divided into two parts: one part is higher, the other is lower, one is gray, the other is with floral print. Bed with high orthopedic mattress.

Customers liked different style and color solutions. The husband preferred a classic interior with stucco and moldings in bright colors, the wife preferred a modern and very restrained minimalism in gray and white colors. As a result, it turned out to combine their wishes in one interior.

For example, the cat peeks out from behind the classic molding. For the floor, a noble oak texture was chosen, which goes on to the wall. Walls and floor in the same direction is not accidental, so they set the movement.

A bright and very soft yellow chair, a rough and tactile floor mat and a yellow lampshade to the right of the bed were found in La Redoute.

“While working on the project, we met a very interesting furniture restorer, as well as a professional carpenter. In collaboration with him, we developed this beautiful console - a dressing table. Timofey Pronkin, former lead singer of the Hi-Fi group, worked with us on its implementation. He made an outstanding frame. And Olga and I decorated it with microcement inside and out. It turned out to be a budget, but very original thing, ”says Tamara Vorontsova.

The dressing table is a handmade art object, it stands on two legs, as if half of the table had been cut off. This game is also observed on its facade.

The bedroom turned out to be conceptual and bright, and if the owners get tired of the color, it will be easy to change the interior and remove all the yellow accent elements.

The dressing room was hidden behind a carved partition, which perfectly zones the space without overloading it.

TV stand made at the factory according to the designers' sketch. A classic model has been released in a pop art interpretation. All pens are different. Three materials were used in the decoration: wood, concrete and yellow paint.

The color scheme for the dressing room is unusual. “We solved it with three colors. The first and main one is MDF with a wood texture, which sets a noble background for the whole room. The second is playful yellow. They have a side open storage system, as well as drawers. The third color is gray concrete, it is it that is combined with the decoration on the walls in the bedroom and harmoniously connects the two spaces together,” the designers say.

In the dressing room there are rods for hanging clothes - they are illuminated from above with integrated lighting.

The designers decided to make part of the decor themselves: these are pots that were decorated with microcement, painted with acrylic paints and a sponge, a stencil.
