Garden planter boxes ideas

10 ways to create spectacular displays |

If you are seeking stylish planter box ideas to give your yard a lift, then look no further. Choosing stylish containers, pairing plants and pots effectively, and locating them for maximum effect can transform your outside space.

When it comes to choosing the perfect planter to realize your container gardening ideas, there are plenty of materials, shapes and sizes to choose from. And brave and bold planting choices will immediately draw the eye and make an impact.

Whether you are after a window box bursting with seasonal blooms or a majestic large-scale container with small tree, your choice will contribute hugely to your property’s appeal.

Planter box ideas

Planters are ideal when you’re looking for small garden ideas or if you have a larger backyard. Place in pairs either side of the front entrance, line up along the walkway or poolside or plant up a standout design to bring seasonal interest to your porch.

Use them for flowers, foliage, or trees, or opt for herb planter ideas so you can bring your herb garden ideas to life, taking inspiration from the planter box ideas we’ve put together here.

1. Introduce rhythm and interest with planter boxes

If you want your planter box ideas to create a true spectacle, line them up along a terrace or at the poolside and intersperse them with topiary. Choosing a striking shape and color and pairing them with dark leaved evergreens makes them an eye-catching feature.

Wooden planter boxes add a formal note and have a rich heritage, as Sarah Casey from Authentic Provence explains. ‘The handmade Authentic Provence Versailles garden planter is an exact re-edition of the French planter boxes from the 17th century as seen throughout the gardens at the Château de Versailles. Traditionally, citrus trees are planted within these vessels. Our Versailles planters have removable wood panels in order to easily extract the citrus tree, or care for its roots.

2. Go for circular planter boxes

Elegant and ideal for planting trees and sprawling blooms, circular planters add instant grace to any outdoor space. Besides adding a sense of movement and gentle lines to a design, they also contrast beautifully with square and rectangular paving, rills, walls and fencing.

Pepper a space with two or three large scale circular planters – as shown in this design by Jo Alderson – to encourage guests to wind their way between them and explore the space beyond. Plant them with an ornamental tree and they will cast a delicate dappled shade beneath them, creating the perfect place to sit out of the sun.

Jo Alderson explains, ‘Being mature these trees did the job instantly and are one of the main architectural features of the garden. These trees weigh well over a ton each so specialists were employed to use tele handlers to place them. Each tree is guyed using tensile steel wires beneath the ground and planted in organic compost with a timed irrigation system.

3. Brighten up railings and balconies

Make the most of flower power with balcony garden ideas like this bridge-style planter. Designed to slot over the handrail it can become home to cheery annuals for a seasonal display, trailing vines and or even herbs and homegrown crops. Place at regular intervals for a smart symmetrical look or maximize the effect by nudging them up right next to each other.

The team at Dutch sustainable flowerpot company Elho say, ‘The flower bridge model offers a simple way to create a sea of flourishing plants that disguises urban surroundings, as they are suitable for almost any balcony, easily slotting on to a variety of railings up to 2.6 inches (6.5cm) wide. Each of these pots has a large growing space allowing plant roots plenty of room to grow.’

4. Style up a corner with planters

(Image credit: A Place in the Garden)

Want to add some leafy interest to an empty corner of your yard? Then planter box ideas are the answer. Not only can you group and position them to make the most of your available space, but you can also tailor the planting to suit your style and your yard’s aspect. Many designs come in a range of sizes and heights, so why not opt for a trio to create a smart and cohesive display at slightly different levels?

Add a touch of variety by mixing in a few containers of contrasting shape or size but do stick to the same finish or material for a smart, co-ordinated display.

When it comes to choosing plants, decide on how bold and colouful you wish the result to be. A mix of clipped evergreens and slender deciduous trees – such as these white stemmed birch trees – create a timeless feel that also reflects the change in seasons, but tropical garden ideas using cannas, fatsia and palms would suit warmer climes or try sculptural drought lovers such as agaves, manzanita, cactus and lantana.

5. Go big with Corten steel planters

Bold and beautiful, large scale weathered steel planters make a striking statement either side of a walkway or in the middle of a border. With their rich rusted surface that develops and intensifies with age, they make the perfect foil for lush foliage and textured grasses. Substantial in size with circular, square and rectangular shapes all on offer, they are perfect for showcasing trees for small gardens, ornamental grasses and low growing evergreens such as carex, brunnera and Coral Bells (heuchera).

6. Choose a planter for the perfect growing conditions

Planter boxes provide portable and versatile growing opportunities. Not only can they be repositioned – with the caveat that some may take more effort and ingenuity to move than others – but the soil and drainage can be  tailored to suit the plant you wish to grow.

Water-loving Calla or Arum lilies thrive in cool, moist compost and like to have their heads in full sun, so raising them in a pot is the perfect way to meet their complex needs. Likewise, if the soil in your yard tends to be acidic or clay based it will make growing some plants such as lavender, Euonymus and lilac almost impossible. Naturally lime loving, these striking and fragrant plants could be among your planter box ideas instead as you can go for an alkaline soil mix.

Planters also enable you to make the most of the different aspects of your garden. Cool shady spots are ideally suited to growing ferns, foam flower (Tiarella) and hostas.

7. Plant up a wild and wistful display

The Rectangular Metal Planter, Architectural Heritage

There’s something magical about a large-scale industrial-style planter teamed with a mass of airy and delicate blooms. The contrast of textures is enchanting and whether the container is made of concrete or sheet metal it’s sure to highlight the intricacy of the tiny flowers.

Go for as big a design as your yard will accommodate and fill with four or five plant varieties to create look of a wild grassland or prairie. A long, rectangular planter such as this antique copper design is ideal for edging a terrace or subtly dividing up a vast patio or courtyard into smaller, more intimate spaces.

Osaka planter in five sizes, the Boulevard range, IOTA Garden

‘On a large terrace or patio, sometimes one or two large planted containers suited to the scale can have much more impact than several smaller ones, which may look insignificant or a little fussy,’ says the team at planter specialists IOTA Garden .

‘If you are looking to plant a tree or large shrub in a container, be sure to pick one that is large enough to accommodate the tree as it grows, so you do not need to re-pot it after a couple of years.  If there's plenty of space around the trunk, you can add interest by underplanting with low-growing grasses or add some seasonal color.’

9. Guide the eye with a pair of planter boxes

Nothing says grandeur better than walking down a garden path or terrace flanked with identical containers. Punctuating the walkway at regular intervals, they instantly lend a formal and rather European note to a yard without visually dividing off the space.

Sticking to the same container and planting scheme is key to maximizing this space-stretching effect. Opt for a dreamy combination of tall standard pink roses in galvanized steel planters to strike a romantic note or try over-sized terracotta flowerpots with sky-soaring cannas or phormiums for pure Mediterranean charm.

10. Fill a planter box with homegrown produce

Not just for blooms, planters are ideal for raising a crop of delicious veggies. Homegrown pole and bush beans, carrots, cukes and peppers will all happily thrive in a container as long as there is adequate drainage and rich soil.

Depending on your available space and choice of container you could stick to one crop per container. A minimum depth of 6 inches (15cm) is enough for most crops – although some root crops prefer more – but aim to go as big as you can. Not only will this mean less watering, but it can help reduce crop stress resulting in healthier and more flavorsome produce.

A large rectangular planter doubles as a mini veg garden. Look to arrange crops in strict rows for traditional homestead charm or try a more decorative approach mixing in beneficial flowers – such as marigolds, nasturtiums, and alliums – which also keep pests at bay.

What should I line my planter box with?

Liners are only really needed for wooden or metal planters. In both cases having wet soil against the sides of the container will cause rot or rust to develop over time, weakening it. Cover the inside with a layer of thick plastic sheeting – making sure to pierce several drainage holes at the base – before filling with soil and adding the plants.

How can I fill a super-sized planter box?

Filling a very large container completely with compost not only makes it impossibly heavy to move without bringing in serious lifting equipment, but it can prove very expensive, too.

Instead, bulk out the bottom third of the planter with lightweight material that will also aid drainage. Plastic take-out plastic containers, milk jugs, empty detergent bottles, spare plastic plant pots and plant trays all work well.

How do I pick a planter in front of my house?

Getting the scale and style of a planter right for your home’s front yard is key to creating a stunning first impression. Think about key sight lines and positions and work out how high the container and plant need to be to make a real statement.

Choosing a planter that mirrors an element of your property’s exterior – it could be the color of the front door, timber shingles or stonework – is a great trick for creating a smart, cohesive look. Consider whether you want the planting or the container to be the real feature – neat topiary spheres and cones work well planted in an ornate design, while robust industrial-style planters suit finer and more delicate flowers and grasses.

20 decor ideas — INMYROOM

Recently, it has become fashionable to save money, be friends with nature, do manual labor and not throw anything away. And now there are much more ideas for “recycling” unnecessary things. We have collected the best handmade stories that will certainly turn the cottage into a creative laboratory.

1. Cutlery accessories

Collect teaspoons in a “bouquet” and they will turn into an exquisite ceiling lamp; fasten the spoons or ladles curved with the letter “S” - they will become holders for small things, and on special occasions - candlesticks. You've probably heard about hooks for clothes from spoons and forks - it's time to try this idea.

2. Furniture and decor from old sports equipment

Do you still think that dominoes are not a sport? Country championships will dispel your doubts. It is best to play in the fresh air under the clock made of the bones of our own production. You will still need sports equipment that has outlived its useful life: for example, you can assemble an elegant hanger for the hallway from skis. And insert mirrors into tennis rackets - it will be a funny and unbanal presentation.

3. Lamp or flowerpot from a bird cage

Keeping birds in captivity is no longer accepted - use the cage for decorative purposes. Put flower pots in it - it will be convenient to take care of the plants, because the lid is removed. The cage can be placed on the veranda, hung on a tree or under a roof.

It is even easier to use such an object in the interior: load the cage with cute vintage trifles, they are always found in abundance in the country house. Make it a lamp or a mini-storage for books - it looks extraordinarily romantic.

4. Outdoor furniture from pallets

Wooden transport pallets are used even in urban interiors - it is simply unthinkable to do without them in the country. Armchairs, sofas and even hanging beds from pallets are quite easy to make yourself. The main thing - do not forget to cover the wood with a protective impregnation or a special moisture-resistant paint. And decorate your furniture with elegant textiles.

5.

Hammock made from scrap materials

For example, from old jeans. If you hesitated to throw away your favorite pants and accumulated a whole stack over the years, sew a durable canvas out of them and hang them on eyelets and cords under trees or on a veranda.

A more difficult option is a hanging swing chair made from old pillows: it is better to fix a rigid base (for example, plywood) under them. Decorate hammocks and chairs in a country style - knitted lace and tassels.

6. Exquisite furniture made from old wine barrels

Of course, not all regions of Russia have such barrels - but if you manage to get something similar, there is a chance to decorate a veranda or plot in the spirit of Provence. The barrel can be used to make a flowerpot or a pond fountain (let the water circulate in a closed system). You can assemble a large table if there are several barrels, and a modest table if there is only one barrel. Divide it into two halves and cover with countertops (or you can just turn the halves over) to get neat bedside barrels.

7. Sofa or barbecue from a metal barrel

But such a container can be found in all regions of the country. To make garden furniture from metal barrels, you have to tinker. But the result will be more than spectacular. After simple manipulations, the barrel also turns into a barbecue grill with a hinged lid. And if you don’t feel like picking up a grinder and a drill, plant flowers in a barrel - this is a win-win option for almost all old things in the country.

8. Barbecue, lamps and furniture from the washing machine

The brazier from the drum of the machine will come out much more compact than from the barrel. And yet no less elegant. Just be sure to check the material: in old Soviet or imported machines, the drum is usually steel. But in later models, a metal-plastic filling is more common.

If you don't have stainless steel in your car, don't be sad: build a hi-tech lamp out of a metal-plastic drum and it will turn your country house into a rustic loft. And you can also make pouffes and tables from drums - bright, painted, with beautiful tabletops and soft seats.

9. Comfortable furniture made of tires

Tires at the summer cottage have become sore and in bad taste? So be it, but nothing prevents you from presenting tires in a new light. Choose from glass tops, fancy fabric to cover the pouffes, and most importantly, matte paint in trendy shades for the tires. It is best to use a special composition for rubber or car enamel in cans.

You can make your own rustic puffs out of tires by wrapping them with twine or covering them with wickerwork. A more complicated option - chairs with seats and backs made of durable polyamide cord.

10. Cable reel chairs and tables

A large wooden reel will make an excellent rocking chair. The most common version of reel furniture is a table: it perfectly tolerates any handmade decor, is stable, and roomy. You can also organize additional storage space between its two planes.

11. Hanging vases and lamps from jars and bottles

It is very easy to make elegant pendants with wire and chains: transparent jars and bottles will shine beautifully in the sun, and if you put bouquets in them, you will get a double decorative effect. With small glass jars, you can make an electric garland. But most often, jars and bottles are used to make all kinds of candlesticks - hanging and table, for home and garden.

12. Candlesticks and lanterns from tin containers

Use ordinary metal funnels (they may even be slightly rusty) to make candlesticks - just turn over and insert a candle into the spout of the funnel.

Tin can lanterns are a little more difficult to make: take a nail and perforate the cans in intricate patterns (or randomly). After that, it is better to paint the jars in dark colors, and protect the surface from the inside from staining - it will remain shiny and reflect light.

13. An old boat for a beautiful flower bed

If you have an old boat, or if your neighbors are ready to get rid of it with your help, rejoice: this is a unique opportunity for trendy landscape decoration. It is necessary to plant flowers in a boat, avoiding excessive elegance. The composition should be a little careless, as if the plants have chosen a small vessel of their own free will - a romantic atmosphere is guaranteed!

14. All sorts of lamps from the old service

Find some time on warm summer evenings to play a fragile constructor and collect some exquisite things. For a chandelier, take white painted cups; for a table lamp - a wide cup or bowl. Plates, saucers, cups and even a teapot with a sugar bowl will come in handy when building a pedestal for a classic lamp with the simplest lampshade.

15. From a bucket, cans or teapot - creative planters

Transplant flowers into old teapots or small buckets. It is easy to decorate the garden with them, placing planters in different places, hanging them by the handles on the fence or under the roof of the veranda. You can also make pots from cans. It is especially beautiful when there are a lot of cans, they are attached to a textured surface (it can be a wooden wall, metal mesh or brickwork) and painted in one color.

16. Basins and showers for country washbasins

Galvanized household utensils and garden utensils are very decorative: boldly plant flowers in watering cans and pots, use troughs and bathtubs as sinks - in bathrooms and outdoor washstands. If you are using a trough and a watering can for its intended purpose, for collecting rainwater and watering, think about how you can beautifully arrange the point of their location. For example, put them on a porch made of stones, or on a wooden bench - or maybe place them in a niche of climbing plants.

17. Finishing, furniture, decor from fruit boxes

It is very convenient to completely decorate the space under the ready-made canopy near the house with boxes: you will get beautiful eco-style walls that do not require cabinets at all. Attach drawers to fences and walls of your home to store garden tools and just for looks. In addition, you can assemble convenient shelves and racks from them.

18. Flower bed or sink from an old bicycle

If you decide to put a garden bike on the site, it should only be a real old bike. Hang luggage baskets (preferably wire ones) on it, and fill them with flowering plants (climbing ones are especially good). It is better to refrain from the desire to repaint the bike in a poisonous pink or piercing blue color entirely: leave the transport “as is” - it may still have to be used in the country for its intended purpose.

An old bicycle can also come in handy in a country house - in the hallway you can turn it into a multifunctional shelf-hanger-support, and in the bathroom you can use it as a creative pedestal for the sink.

19. Chandeliers with lampshades for hanging planters

Vertical flower beds are becoming more and more popular: another idea for planting flowers "in suspension" confirms this. Chandeliers with flower pots instead of lampshades are quite simple to make: remove the shades and cartridges from the finished lamp, remove the wires. Attach saucers and pots with epoxy. And then paint the entire structure so that it has a single texture. Plant violas or petunias in pots and invite your neighbors to a ceremonial five-o-clock on the renovated veranda.

20. Ottoman, bedside table and chest of drawers from an old suitcase

A suitcase that has left can still live a long interior life - attach legs to it to make a cabinet or table. After some time, the cabinet can turn into a bench, ottoman or chair. And when the suitcase is left without a lid (but not without a handle), make a box out of it for an ordinary wooden chest of drawers (by and large, it’s not a pity to specially put together a chest of drawers for such a box!).

Country ideas: creating comfort and beauty from old boxes

Greetings to all readers of our dacha blog, who do not deny themselves the pleasure of handicraft at their leisure!

In our regular column devoted to all kinds of crafts from improvised materials, you will find another fascinating photo review on the topic of how simply and tastefully you can use old boxes.

It would seem, well, what is a wooden container good for, except for storing apples and potatoes? But no! We have selected for you a whole bunch of inspiring ideas for arranging a summer cottage interior, decorating a local area, as well as creating original designs that will fit perfectly into the surrounding garden landscape. Watch, admire and take note!

Drawers in the cottage interior: furniture and interior items

Modular drawer furniture is just a real find for a cozy country house. What is called, cheap, reliable and practical! Easy to assemble, easy to transform and gives us the opportunity to show our creativity to the fullest.

Functional shelving and partitions, mobile shelves, all kinds of shelves for the kitchen and hallway - this is not a complete list of comfortable country furniture in the current eco-style, such furniture from boxes with your own hands is easily constructed at a minimum cost.

If there is a lack of the required amount of conditioned material, the boxes can be put together by yourself from the remains of boards and plywood gathering dust in the attic in anticipation of the next repair. Or use retractable containers from old cabinet furniture, having issued a nice wall rack for storing thousands of little things.

A little fantasy, acrylic paint, furniture fittings, and a simple wooden box turns into an elegant bedside table, coffee table or soft ottoman.

Agree, this non-standard furniture design looks much more advantageous than those interior items that have been living in the country for years.

Away with old rickety chairs, polished tables, sideboards and retired kitchen sets! Long live freedom and space, comfortable minimalism and eye-pleasing colors!

Spacious shelves for the children's room, a movable box for storing toys, a comfortable and functional bed in the bedroom - this is not only an original solution for furnishing country apartments, but also a very significant financial savings. And not at the expense of comfort.

Ordinary wooden boxes are a great option for decorating a hallway or tiered shelving in a pantry for storing seasonal shoes. And even a beginner can build them with his own hands.

And, finally, it is worth mentioning various pleasant little things that create comfort and a special atmosphere in the house.

In addition to cute interior decorations, drawers of various sizes and shapes can make a lot of useful kitchen utensils like a wine bottle holder and paper towels. Or a real country masterpiece - a vintage bathroom sink.

And, of course, let's not forget to take care of our four-legged friends, who will find it so sweet to take a nap on soft and cozy beds.

How do you like this project of a dog house, the roof of which is decorated with a box with planted flowers? The law enforcement officer will surely be pleased.

The theme of boxes in dacha design: decorating the garden and yard

Decorating household plots with the help of improvised means and materials is a favorite feature of a real summer resident with experience.

And rightly so! After all, to make it beautiful does not mean expensive, besides, the process of improvement itself gives pleasure and joy from the achieved result.

Wooden boxes, as containers for growing flowers, hanging and floor planters fit perfectly into landscape garden design. No officialdom - continuous improvisation!

The summer kitchen on the open terrace will be nicely complemented by an improvised set of furniture made up of drawers painted to match the facade.

A cute detail: a mobile flower garden with bright petunias located in the trailers of a miniature train. Nothing complicated, but it looks very picturesque against the background of clipped border greenery!

Crates of various origins are ideal for vertical greening of walls, fences and house facades. We create a project, make markup in place and go ahead, get to work!

There are many ways to decorate a cozy seating area with benches or a mini-pond on the garden terrace. Taking the most ordinary box as the main idea, we can get such stylish design solutions.

What else can be useful to build from boxes in the garden? Put together vertical racks for potted crops from boards, arrange a lush multi-tiered flower bed or equip your workplace, where it will be convenient to trim and seedling plants throughout the summer season.
