A beautiful backyard pool can be as calming for your mind as it is refreshing for your body. Even the view of tranquil water, whether from inside your home or from your garden, patio, or porch, can soothe the soul.

From minimalist modern swimming pool designs to more formal, elaborate styles, the key to creating a sophisticated swimming pool is to complement the landscape rather than compete with it. This is true of almost any backyard design idea, from pergolas and gazebos to garden sheds. One of the best ways to nestle a pool into the landscape is to carefully choose plant materials surrounding it. Planning a pool in full sun? Consider surrounding with drought-tolerant plants and cool decking materials. For a cooler watering hole, lush up the landscape with plants that thrive in the shade.

Next, you'll want to think through how to furnish your pool deck. It's important to choose outdoor furniture that's comfortable, durable, and suitable to the style of your pool design. Of course, no pool would be complete without plush beach towels. And for a whimsical touch, embellish your pool with a charming outdoor fountain or a stylish garden ornament.

If you’re making plans for summer or simply dreaming of it on a dreary winter day, dive into these serene swimming pool designs for a luxurious escape.

Refreshing Backyard Pool Makeovers

1/12

A backyard pool offers the perfect place to cool down in those hot summer months. With the right landscaping, backyard pools can be so much more than just a cool place to take a quick dip. They can convert the space to a true outdoor haven. Whether you’re looking to add a new pool or to upgrade the landscaping around your existing one, use these pool landscaping ideas to gain some inspiration to create a truly breathtaking space in your own backyard.

Lush and Luxurious

2/12

Adding some gorgeous greenery around the pool can enhance the look of the deep blue water and make it even more inviting. Consider placing lush bushes around the perimeter of the pool to frame it and draw attention to the space, while also offsetting and softening the hard look of stone or concrete around the pool. Bushes, trees, flowers, and other plants can also provide a haven for songbirds and provide a truly natural feel around the pool.

Elegant Evening Entertaining

3/12

Think about how the space will look in the evenings as well. Floating pool lights (available on Amazon ) can help set the right mood and create an inviting, or even romantic, environment. Even more than that, though, they can highlight landscape and design elements that would disappear in the dark. Or add a few solar lights near landscaping around the pool. Many modern outdoor light fixtures offer remote control for easy lighting and color-changing bulbs that can enhance the mood and atmosphere to match any event.

Simple and Sophisticated

4/12

You don’t have to “go big” to make a big impact. Keeping things simple by using both dark- and light-colored geometric pavers around the pool can transform even the smallest of pools into a modern and refined space. Add some touches of green and string patio lights (available on Amazon) to complete the look.

istockphoto.com

Peaceful Privacy

5/12

Adding bushes and trees around a pool can serve a dual purpose. In addition to creating an appealing and inviting space, trees and shrubs can function as a natural privacy wall. When choosing trees or bushes to place around a pool, look for plants that are easy to maintain and have the appropriate shape and proportions for your space—when they mature! It is also critical to select plants that are suitable for the local climate. Also consider the color, texture, and scent that they will add to the outdoor area.

istockphoto.com

Stairway to Cool

6/12

Add stunning wooden steps spanning the length and/or width of an above-ground pool to bring dimension to the space, while also making it easier to access the pool or lounge along its side. Consider placing a few large decorative planters (available on Amazon) to add vibrant flowers or other color vegetation along the steps. Planting lush green bushes or trees along the other sides of the pool can tie the look together.

Symmetrical Serenity

7/12

For a truly peaceful and breathtaking transformation, create a symmetrical design using the pool shape, pavers, and greenery. Rather than sticking with a traditional rectangular or oval pool, allow each side to jut out with a subtle design mirroring one another. Continue the symmetrical theme by adding the same number of palm trees or other tropical plants to each side of the pool.

istockphoto.com

A Pool with a View

8/12

Imagine being able to swim or relax in a pool while enjoying an unobstructed view of the mountains, trees, or landscaping in the area. An infinity pool can make this all possible, while also doubling as an artistic addition to the space. Carefully place some tropical trees, plants, filled containers, or other greenery around the pool to enhance the view and complete the picture perfect image.

istockphoto.com

Entrancing Embers

9/12

The soft flickering glow of flames can bring a level of tranquility to any outdoor space. Adding one or two fire pots (available at The Home Depot) around the pool will create an oasis perfect for relaxation. Consider placing some glass fire beads (available on Amazon) in the fire pits to reflect the flames’ dancing lights on the water’s surface.

Add a Touch of Greenery

10/12

If you have a spacious wood or stone deck around the pool, break up the space with some thoughtfully placed greenery. Adding patches of grass with small shrubs or flowers on either side of the pool and in a few other areas around the deck can define the space and add visual appeal. Plus, grass feels good on those wet, bare toes!

istockphoto.com

Deck the Destination

11/12

Extending a deck to the side of an above-ground pool makes it easier to access the pool, plus it can give the illusion that the pool is built into the space. Incorporate some color and make the area more inviting by adding a mosaic side table (available on Amazon) with some flower pots or large planters (available on Amazon) on the deck area.

Take Inspiration from Nature

12/12

Create your own backyard lagoon by placing lush, tall trees and bushes right up to the edges of the pool around its perimeter. Adding other natural elements, such as large rocks along the bottom of the pool or a cascading waterfall, can help convert the space into a private tropical retreat.

hammam pools and saunas №118 6 turnkey hammam What is the cost of a Turkish bath? At the end of February 2022, prices changed dramatically. The difference is especially felt in the cost of European equipment. premises, these costs are included in the estimate. Equipment. Now the market has high-quality Russian equipment at an affordable cost. At the same time, the cost of equipment imported from European countries increased by 25-30%. At the same time, I would like to note that the cost of construction work in Russia remains at the same level. Therefore, the overall estimate for the bath remains at an acceptable level. Finishing work - a field for imagination. In recent years, excellent materials produced in Russia have appeared. And the main supplies of mosaics and ceramic tiles come from China. European marble is still in stock. The cost of this part of the estimate can be completely flexible. Plumbing also ranges from budget brands to high tech luxury brands. Increasingly, the choice falls on hand made and piece models that make your bath special and loved. Especially often, designers resort to creating kurns from different materials (marble, cement, ceramics). Fast decision making. The faster you conclude a contract, buy out equipment, coordinate details with a contractor, the faster the construction process takes place and payment for downtime, rent, and related work does not accumulate. As a rule, the contractor will not ask you for money for these works, but in addition to the construction of the hammam, there will be other costs and, if possible, it is advisable to provide for all additional work in the contract. But no matter how much the bathhouse costs, its presence in the house and apartment is always a pleasure. What makes up the price of a turnkey hammam: Readiness of the premises for installation. Depending on whether plastering work has been done, whether there are holes for sewerage and mixers, whether there are all communication connections to the main and technical premises. If you need to do additional work to prepare

Koi carp painted on the walls of the bathroom is not just a beautiful decoration. It symbolizes calmness, composure, good luck, as well as perseverance and striving for a goal. n RELIABLE PURIFICATION SYSTEMS For 40 years, EMEC (Italy) has been developing and manufacturing reliable, state-of-the-art systems for water disinfection and dosing of chemical reagents to bring harmony, safety and naturalness to the relationship between man and water. The company produces control and measuring devices that solve the problems of measurement and regulation in the process of dosing chemicals. Including LOTUS chlorine dioxide generators. The use of chlorine dioxide in water treatment is driven by increased attention to health related to biological factors. LOTUS chlorine dioxide generators are used in various industries to combat microorganisms in water systems. In water treatment plants 90% of bacteria are born and multiply in the biofilm that settles inside the piping system and hot water tanks. Chlorine dioxide penetrates the biofilm and destroys it from the inside. The drug has a residual effect that persists for several days and reaches all installation points. It does not change the taste and smell of water. Unlike other chlorine-based disinfectants, chlorine dioxide does not create toxic chloramines and haloforms. Mikhail Melnikov, CEO EMEC Russia

Digest pools and saunas №118 10 n COMPACT POOLS If the garden is small, this is not a reason to abandon your own outdoor pool. So that everyone can splash in the water without going far from home, the German company Riviera Pool recommends the C-Side 37-L pool. It will turn even the most modest plot into a real Garden of Eden. There is no doubt that the new pool will become a favorite recreational spot for both adults and children. Hydromassage jets turn the pool into a private outdoor spa. The manufacturer offers a wide range of finishing materials and decorative elements for this pool, so it will be so easy to choose the right design for it, which ideally complements the design of the backyard. n TOWARDS A BETTER SPA The German company KLAFS is a recognized trendsetter in European spa architecture and design. The company's innovative developments set the vector for the development of the entire direction and become a model for hundreds of companies working in the construction and equipping of spa and wellness areas. Therefore, it is not surprising that KLAFS objects regularly receive awards at prestigious international competitions. In 2021, the company won the gold medal of the European Federation of Pool and Spa Businesses (EUSA) award. The award has been presented annually since 2013 in several categories. There were 19 participants in the 2021 competition9 pools from 11 countries. Pictured is the spa with EUSA-awarded KLAFS pools. n OXYGEN FOR THE POND Spring, sunshine, it's time for algae to grow actively in the pond. But will this please the pond owner who prefers to watch the colorful koi frolicking in the water rather than the green curtains of algae? To do this, you need to purchase an oxidizer, for example, from the German company Soechting Biotechnik, which provides an optimal biological balance in water. The oxidizer produces both pure and activated oxygen. The oxidant solution used in the device is split into molecular oxygen and water. Oxygen entering the pond water deprives the algae of nutrients. By the way, the oxidizer can also be used in winter, when the pond is covered with ice. epr/Riviera Pool epr/Soechting Biotechnik

pools and saunas No. 118 56 wellness Ceramic tiles from the Quarzit collection of the well-known German brand Agrob Buchtal were chosen for the walls and floors. In order to achieve the effect of a single space that unites outdoor areas - a pool, a terrace, stairs - with a home interior, tiles of the same format were used everywhere - 60 x 60 cm for the floor and 30 x 60 cm for the walls. The villa looks very light and airy, it fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape, and it cannot be called simple. Quarzit tiles (Agrob Buchtal) 60 x 60 cm were chosen for the private area of the villa and bedrooms. Thus, an elegant villa with noble timeless architecture and an impressive location, with a beautiful view of the sea and mountains, was born. At the very beginning of the work, family members set a specific task for the architects. The house was to be built in the spirit of laconic minimalism, using only high-quality building materials designed for a long service life. And, of course, the villa should have a swimming pool. The villa stands on a mountainside and seems to hover above the sea and the village below. Its central part is a space that combines the kitchen, breakfast area and dining area. Sliding glass doors lead to a terrace with a large infinity pool. The bedrooms are located on the west side of the house on the ground floor, which also has its own terrace. The Quarzit tile from Agrob Buchtal used to decorate the villa is complemented by the innovative Hytect surface, which repels dirt and has an antibacterial effect.

Interview pools and saunas №118 64 In open water Evgeniy Bezruchenko kindly agreed to tell the readers of our magazine about how he got into swimming, how the idea to organize a SwimCup came about, how open water swimming differs from swimming in a pool and who should join starts in open water. — My parents are swimmers, masters of sports. Therefore, there were no other options: I was brought to the pool at the age of 6, however, for 3–4 months I actively resisted, but they forced me. I had to swim. At the age of 18, I moved to CSKA and got to a coach who already had a student, a world champion in open water. The coach suggested that I go to the open water selection, I went and immediately qualified for the European Championship. And there he took second place and in the future he was already thinking only about open water. How did SwimCup start? At 19In 1999, I started on my own, apart from the team of the Russian national team, to travel to commercial competitions. And I saw that a commercial start is not 10 professionals, but 20 plus 2000 amateurs in one swim. I saw the great interest of the participants, I really liked this attitude to sports. When I finished swimming and started training Evgeniy Bezruchenko, world champion in open water swimming, Honored Master of Sports of Russia, multiple champion of Russia in pool and open water, founder of Russia's first international series of open water swimming competitions SwimCup Champions Cup. our amateur students, we took them abroad, organized swims, for example, in the Adriatic, in Dubai, however, without permission. We sailed ten in the sea, put markings there, sailed at 7 in the morning, there were about 30 of us. And then we decided to turn it all into a serious look, we found a sponsor. And in 2014 we made the first three starts in open water: Moscow, Lipetsk and Volgograd. The three of us did it: I am from Moscow, Vladimir Dyachin is a world champion from Lipetsk and Larisa Ilchenko, an Olympic champion from Volgograd. Actually, the name of the competition means the Cup organized by the champions. In the first year, we had 410 participants in Moscow, about 300 in Lipetsk, and in Volgograd too. The next year in Moscow there were 700, the third - 1100. Now we have not three, but from 16 to 18 stages a year, and for the year we have more than 10,000 participants, including the pool. Swimming in open water is no different from swimming in a pool. I could compete in the pool and in the open water at the same time, and there is no specific load for ordinary distances. That's when you are preparing for a distance of 10 km in open water, then you need to change the training program, strengthening it. There are differences at the level of emotions. Swimming long distances in the pool is boring. And in open water you get beautiful views, the underwater world, extreme winds, waves and currents. Technically, it is impossible to fix the results in open water: today the wind is in your face, tomorrow it will be in your back. Open water is an extreme adventure. This is something more hipster, free, psychologically light. Our participants, the main backbone, are men and women (they are approximately equal) aged about 35–45 years. Of course, these are amateurs, professionals are very rare, as they have a busy training schedule. Often coaches ask to give their athletes the opportunity to start, because there are practically no professional starts in Russia, there is a Russian championship and that's it. Athletes need practice to improve. But anyway 98% of our swimmers are amateurs. I would recommend open water swimming to everyone: runners, triathletes, those who do not go to the pool, and those who go to try themselves in a new genre. There are distances for beginners - at 500 m, there are small, clean reservoirs with clear water, no stress. Only a pleasant company, a cheerful party. Families come to us, for everyone there is some kind of sports activity. Therefore, we are waiting for everyone at our starts!

Pools, pools and saunas №118 66 Reactivation of the pool In the previous issue of the Pools and Saunas magazine, which was out of print on the eve of winter, we talked about how to prepare the pool for winter so that it can endure the cold season without loss. But now spring is on the threshold, and it's time to start reopening the pool. Valery Khaziev, General Director of the Interprogress company, kindly agreed to tell the readers of the magazine about this.

Swimming pools pools and saunas №118 68 The next stage is commissioning, preparation of pumping, filtering, dosing, temperature control equipment for operation. They are performed in the following order. 1. We dismantle the plugs in the pipes, nozzles and skimmer installed for the winter. 2. We install handrails and stairs in place. 3. We collect the pipes dismantled during the conservation of the pool. 4. Check the filter system. If necessary, we replace the sand. 5. We set the desired temperature on the thermostat. 6. Check the dosing system. 7. After everything is prepared, fill the pool bowl with clean water. 8. Add chemicals manually. 9. We control the filling of the pool bowl and pipelines with water. After filling the pool, it is time to determine the pH level of the water and adjust it, an acceptable pH level is 7.2-7.6. Then we proceed to disinfection. Interprogress FramnerPools

pools and saunas №118 69 Pools We provide shock chlorination. It allows you to effectively disinfect, clean and clarify the water column. To do this, use Chemoform T-65 granular, diluting it in water in a certain proportion. The resulting solution is poured along the sides with the filtration turned on, having previously turned off the heater, ultraviolet light, and the dosing system. We add Chemoform "Alba Super", it prevents the growth of algae and fungi. After the preparations are completely mixed (after about an hour), turn off the filtration system. Add liquid coagulant Chemoform "Flokfiks". After a day, we clean the bottom of the pool from sediment with a water vacuum cleaner. We turn on the filter and, if necessary, do a backwash. And finally, the final step! We turn on the filtration system, ultraviolet installation, dosing system, heater (after setting the desired temperature). After a while, we check the quality of the water with a tester (the level of free chlorine must be at least 0.3 mg / l (for the combined cleaning method - at least 0.1 mg / l), and the pH value (pH) should be in the range of 7.2 –7.6), if necessary, correct it. It was a story about the reopening of standard pools. Biopools have their own characteristics during spring awakening. But we'll talk about that next time!

Swimming pools pools and saunas №118 72 While on vacation in the Republic of Karelia, architect Ivan Kolokolnikov met the future customer of this project - the owner of a view area in Karelia. This plot is located on a small hill with a panoramic view of the forest. The customer came up with the idea to divide the site into several segments and place modern comfortable cottages on them for the purpose of further leasing or selling. In the process of working on the project, developed by the creative team of architects Ivan Kolokolnikov and Ilya Galinsky, it was decided to build five identical houses with individual, separate amenities. An idea-image immediately arose with a semi-circular courtyard space enclosed in the overall compositional volume of a villa with a flat roof in a minimalist style, with a predominance of laconic, simple geometric shapes. The result was a private zone, fenced off from neighboring areas, but open to the panorama of the Karelian landscape. The main premises of the villa, which have panoramic energy-efficient glazing, are oriented towards the courtyard part: a kitchen / dining room, a living room and two bedrooms. The structural scheme of the building assumes the use of a monolithic frame filled with aerated concrete blocks.
