Living in a small space requires a little bit of extra thinking and creativity. 1. Try a trundle.

In the market for a daybed? If you anticipate having more than one guest stay the night at some point, a daybed with a trundle underneath will prevent your besties from having to sleep on the floor. We promise they’ll thank you for that!

2. Minimize the side table.

Sometimes, small spaces require you to make sacrifices. And that’s fine, but a nightstand is a must for most people. No room beside the bed? Try this brilliant solution: turn the nightstand to face the wall opposite the bed. If your room is small enough, you’ll still be able to reach your nightstand, but you’ll spare yourself the drama of trying to cram one into a tight space.

3. Use mirrors to give the illusion of added space.

This popular design trick can totally work in your sleeping space, and is one of our favorite small bedroom ideas. Plus, a large and well-placed mirror will help filter extra light into your bedroom. A real win-win in our opinion!

4. Utilize below-the-bed storage.

There’s no better place to store extra belongings than below your bed. Since the bed is already taking up a lot of floor space, it just makes sense. Some options? Choose a bed with built-in storage, use wooden storage crates, design your own drawers or even use pretty baskets to corral clutter.

5. Hang art high to trick the eye.

Some of the best small bedroom ideas are using design tricks to make your space seem larger. If you’re planning on hanging art or other things on your walls, try hanging them higher than usual – close to the ceiling, even – to draw the eye upward and create the illusion of a larger space.

6. Make a Murphy bed chic.

Long gone are the days of basic Murphy beds. You can easily make one of these fold-out beds your own by treating the bed’s framework like a regular wall. Add artwork, paint it, or drape textiles behind your bed, as seen in this California studio.

7. Get creative with foot-of-the-bed storage.

Don’t limit yourself to plastic containers and closet storage cubes when there are so many types of storage available, particularly decorative pieces that you can leave out in plain view. Try an end-of-bed trunk or storage bench. You’ll be able to find one that suits your decor perfectly, as seen in this this Dutch home. Find one with a tiny footprint, and you’re all set. This area can also double as a spot to set out your clothes for the next day or even put on your shoes.

8. Separate space with an accent wall.

Even if you’re occupying a studio, like this adorable one in the Bronx, you can make the most of your space. A little bit of paint, in the form of an accent wall behind your bed, not only adds a burst of color, but it also provides a strategic, visual separation between your sleeping space and living area.

The narrow cabinets in this New York bedroom prove how storage pieces painted in the same color as your walls can recede visually, making your space look airy without sacrificing precious storage opportunities.

10. Play with proportions.

Layering a simple bed frame on top of an oversized rug can instantly amplify your space and make it appear larger. Take this San Francisco bedroom, for example, and picture it with a lavish headboard or an upholstered bed frame. You can imagine how much more cramped the space would feel if it didn’t have simple furniture with streamlined silhouettes.

paul raeside

A corner seating nook for lounging, reading, and chatting is a bonus in any bedroom, especially in a tiny one! Corinne Mathern Design

If you don't have a closet, but you do have a clothing collection, stay organized and polished with custom wall built-ins that store everything behind closed doors. Robert Peterson / Rustic White I

8

Pay Attention to Scale

Heidi Caillier Design

Get Matchy-Matchy (Playfully)

Thijs de Leeuw/Space Content/Living Inside

This small room designed by Atelier ND is exploding with fun colors. The electric orange blinds, dark green carpet, yellow side table, and purple plaid bedspread bring an edgy midcentury feel that gets the job done.

11

Or, Get Matchy-Matchy (Seriously)

Stephen Kent Johnson for Ashe Leandro

12

Paint Exposed Materials White

Stephen Kent Johnson

To center a headboard on the wall, designer Shawn Henderson closed up a decorative fireplace in this pint-sized but perfect NYC bedroom. A coat of white paint helps the exposed brick wall blend in and feel much less heavy.

13

Opt for High-Contrast Colors

Brie Williams

Make it a jewel box bursting with colors and patterns. This striking red nailhead bed frame can be tame and paired with classic neutrals, or it can be dressed up with fun accessories and contrasting painting colors, as designer Ariene Bethea displays here.

14

Use All Available Surface Space

Fantastic Frank

15

Install Sconces

TREVOR TONDRO

19

Embrace Coziness With Dark Wallpaper

Heidi Caillier Design

Heidi Caillier embraces the smaller size with inky grasscloth wallpaper. While any dark paint color could create a similar impact, the striated wallpaper brings even more texture—perfect for a cozy bedroom.

20

Section It Off

Fantastic Frank

Embrace the tininess of a space and make it extra intimate and cozy with a sheer curtain around the bed. Jazz up the walls with paint, artwork, or wallpaper to bring in personality without taking up space.

21

Accomodate the Layout

HB

Each item is carefully chosen to work within this small space. For example, the narrow bedroom table fits into the little nook perfectly, and since it's on the slimmer side, they made sure the two-tiered table on the other side of the bed offered extra surface space. Then, they went vertical with a gallery wall to draw the eye up.

22

Choose a Bold Bed

Bjorn Wallander

Designed by Balsamo Antiques and Interior Design, this bedroom proves that even if your space is mostly neutral, you can add character—and coziness—thanks to textures, unique combos, and sculptural silhouettes. This statement four-poster bed is takes up most of the room, and that's actually a great thing.

Each piece also nods back to the brilliant abstract painting above the bed.

24

Tuck Your Bed Away

Fantastic Frank

If you live in a studio or need or use your bedroom for more than just sleeping, consider a DIY trundle bed or a solid platform with a retractable bed under it. 27

Pile on the Patterns

Simon Watson

28

Nicole England

In a lofted bedroom, Keep the mattress low to the ground like architect McLaren.Excell did here. An antique work stool functions as a side table and the sconces are built right into the partial wall behind the bed.

29

Customize

House Beautiful

Customize bedding with monograms and match your lampshades to your headboard, but then get wacky with curtains and throw blankets. That will ensure the perfect balance between polished and fun.

30

Combine Dresser and Nightstands

Shade Degges

"I wanted to create a bedroom full of personality," designer Jae Joo says of the main bedroom in this Boston Rowhouse. With no room for both a dresser and nightstands, she opted for something that could do both at once. Though classic and understated, the room brims with character thanks to a shrunken photo gallery, curved furniture, and colorful accents.

31

Shrink It Down

Romanek Design Studio

If you don't have enough room to pull up a bench to the end of your bed, try a stool instead. It'll add that desired design polish and give you somewhere to put on your shoes or store a blanket, but it won't look as bulky or take up as much visual real estate. Interior designer Brigette Romanek of Romanek Design Studio opted for a sleek caramel leather stool to contrast with the romantic blush bed frame.

32

Go Wild With Wallpaper

Studio DB

It might seem a little much for a small space, but a bold, bright wallpaper can help cocoon your room and give it a jewel-box effect. You don't need to cover the entire wall to make a statement. Just choose a smaller nook to cover in a fun print, as Studio DB boldly did in this bedroom.

33

Customize With Built-Ins

Romanek Design Studio

Take advantage of awkward niches, corners, nooks, and crannies with a built-in bench like Romanek Design Studio did in this bedroom. Even though it might not seem like useable space when you first look at it, a simple bench, cushions, and wall art can give it a brand new second life.

34

Make a Fake Canopy

SIMON WATSON

With no space for extra fun elements like floor lamps and a canopy, designer Peter Durham created a custom curtain wall and installed bedside sconces.

35

Install Inventive Storage

Mikael Axelsson

When you have a teeny-tiny bedroom, you have to get scrappy and strategic about storage space—otherwise, you'll never find what you're looking for unless you stub your toe on it. Take inspiration from this space, where the bed has built-in drawers and is framed by a bookshelf, which allows for extra storage space as well as a place to display decor and art.

36

Use Multi-Purpose Furniture

Tasmin Johnson

In this bedroom designed by Tamsin Johnson, the nightstand doubles as a dresser. If you can only fit one piece of furniture in your bedroom, make sure it's one that offers a few functional benefits.

37

Customize Your Headboard

Emily Henderson Design

This wall-to-wall upholstered headboard was custom designed by Brady Tolbert for Emily Henderson Design to meet the homeowners needs function and style-wise. That's a guaranteed way to make sure your bedroom is everything you want it to be. In the case of a small bedroom, a custom headboard with built-in nightstand saves tons of space.

38

Put Stuff Under Your Bed

Tim Street Porter

In this bedroom by Martin Lawrence Bullard, the preexisting architectural quirks are played up by a graphic, linear wallpaper that contrast with the more traditional elements throughout the space. But the most genius element? This bed has drawers underneath for more storage when you're lacking closet space.

39

Use Bigger (But Fewer) Furnishings

Maltsev Design

It may seem counterintuitive, but outfitting a small space with just a few large-scale pieces (rather than a mishmash of pint-size furniture) can actually make it feel grander. Resist the urge to push all of your furniture up against the walls. If you leave space behind the furniture, it makes the room look wider than it is.

40

Downsize Your Bed

If you need to sacrifice your queen or even your double, don't fret. A twin bed still has plenty of potential to be your stylish dream spot. In this small bedroom designed by Arent & Pyke, the custom corner headboard upholstered with Kelly Wrestler fabric sets the tone for a room that stands out, no matter its size.

41

Bring In Foldable Pieces

Paul Costello

Can't fit an accent chair into the corner to pile all your clothes on? Use a slim stool instead—even better if it's foldable so you can tuck to away when not in use. This will the mess to a minimum. Decorated by Shaun Smith, this bedroom is a great example of bold yet sophisticated style and cohesive pattern play in a tiny space.

42

Go Dark

Seth Caplan

Contrary to popular belief, dark colors don't necessarily make a room feel smaller—sometimes they even have the opposite effect, creating the illusion of an expansive space. The sandy hues of the duvet blend so nicely with plum pillows, both of which are sharpened by the inky wall paint. The linen bedding softens up the edgier feel of the black paint in this bedroom designed by Tali Roth.

43

Use Vertical Space

Built-in and low to the ground, this bed boasts an easy coolness. It was designed by Southern California-based Alexander DB, so no wonder it exudes that quintessential Cali cool charm. Add a floating shelf to use your vertical space for displaying artwork and storing knick knacks.

44

Utilize Built-Ins

James Merrell

Built-in bookshelves give you extra storage space without having a chunky piece of furniture protruding into the room. This hot air balloon printed wallcovering brings a sense of dreaminess and movement to the small bedroom. It's a beautiful way to frame the wall of built-in shelves. Designer Katie Lyndon aptly describes it as both classic but imaginative.

45

Add Mirrors

Alec Hemer

Fake space 'til you make space. Closet mirrors make this small bedroom feel larger than it actually is.

Narrow bedroom design (50 photos): beautiful interior ideas

The optimal layout for life and design is square. But in reality, you have to deal with a wide variety of geometries, including rectangular rooms in which you need to think about the location of each item. This task becomes more complicated when it comes to personal space, which involves the formation of comfortable conditions for relaxation. But the smart design of a narrow bedroom has its own tricks and a lot more options than it seems at first glance! nine0005

Main features of

Housing regulations state that in high-rise buildings the width of the bedroom should be at least 2.5 m, but this is the minimum limit, extremely inconvenient for living. Many in the post-Soviet space were lucky enough to be the owners of the legendary "Khrushchev", in which the rooms are still narrower and their boundary "norm" should be at least 2.25 m.

Not only a room with such an uncomfortable square can be narrow. For example, an elongated layout, in which the length of some walls is several times longer than others, may also seem “flattened” and uncomfortable. Problematic for creating a design project or further living are rectangular bedrooms with a lot of items, leaving little room for movement. nine0005

On the one hand, the narrow geometry of a bedroom is easier to accept than, for example, a corridor or a kitchen. Indeed, in order for it to be used for its intended purpose, it is enough to place the bed - and the place to rest is ready. But most people spend here not only at night, but put themselves in order, study, work, and go about their daily business. For such purposes, you will have to take care of the design of the space, taking into account all the details: visual, subject and functional content. Let's consider each moment in more detail. nine0005

Style Tips

A narrow bedroom is a special case that requires special solutions. If in spacious rooms with a flat layout there are practically no restrictions in directions, then our area puts forward certain requirements for the external image. Of course, it is important to stick to stylistic unity, but when the bedroom is of similar size, the rest of the house is likely to be in the same situation, so the principle of choice will not differ. nine0005

Scandinavian style will be the best option. He takes care of the residents and relies on functionality, which is especially important in a narrow dwelling. The color scheme characteristic of him will come to the rescue, including white with the addition of other discreet blotches.

Nordic interiors are usually filled with natural materials, the presence of which creates favorable conditions even in the most uncomfortable room. Objects have a simple shape and easily adapt to the specifics of the area. Bright accents in the form of surfaces with an interesting texture, paintings or lamps will help to dilute the monochromatic composition. nine0005

Other contemporary trends, such as minimalism or hi-tech, will also fit perfectly into a narrow bedroom. They involve the use of a limited set of decorative elements that are considered inappropriate in rooms with any planning features.

But classical trends are rarely found in such an interior. And it's not just about the saturation of style with luxurious details. By itself, it gravitates toward space, regular geometry and compositional rigor, when all objects line up around an established center, which is difficult to do in a narrow bedroom. nine0005

You can design a bedroom in a classic style by turning to its modern interpretation. It is more loyal to the conditions of the room, less decorative, and also has a calm color scheme.

Color solutions for a narrow bedroom

After styling, you can immediately move on to choosing the right color, as it is the main tool for visual correction of space. Designers recommend turning to a light palette, because dark colors outline the geometry of the bedroom, thereby highlighting it. nine0005

White will help to erase visible borders, as well as other variations: milky, nutty or gray. Do not forget about the purpose of the zone, which is used for rest and relaxation. Therefore, its gamma should be as calm as possible, pleasant for perception.

Pastel colors look harmonious: blue will create a feeling of peace, light green - unity with nature, pink - tenderness and femininity, and peach will contribute to a cheerful awakening.

A natural atmosphere can be created with natural colors such as pine, brown, sand and so on. They evoke associations with nature, which is appropriate for houses in the city center. nine0005

A combination of several colors will help to correct the geometry of the bedroom. Designers often resort to the following technique: a narrow wall is painted in a more saturated shade, and those adjacent to it - in a light one. Or you can combine surfaces with warm and cold tones, as the former appear optically closer, while the latter seem to move away from the audience.

Bedroom decoration

In addition to the fact that materials for finishing a narrow bedroom should be selected environmentally friendly and "breathable", they must have a suitable texture. There are no special requirements for stability, since a comfortable microclimate usually reigns in this room, but durability plays an important role. nine0005

Floor

Parquet and laminate are traditionally used for flooring. It is convenient to take care of them, not counting the presence of joints into which spilled liquid can get. You can fix the narrow layout if the direction of the panels is parallel to the smaller partition.

A soft, pleasant-to-the-touch carpet or square rug in the center of the room is ideal. It must be remembered that the tone of the floor should be several shades darker than the walls.

nine0044 Walls

Walls painted in light shades will look great in a minimalist interior. But the most common type of wallpaper remains - plain, with patterns, geometric ornaments or photorealistic images.

At the same time, it is worth decorating the narrow side in the center of the room with a bright coating, especially if a bed is attached to it. A horizontal striped texture will help expand the area.

Ceiling

Limited square meters will not allow the use of drywall products that are popular today in a narrow bedroom. It is better to give preference to smooth, even surfaces without noticeable design details. nine0005

The choice of cladding depends on the original condition of the ceiling. Partitions without flaws can be covered with paint or wallpaper. Tensile structures will help to hide any irregularities, communications, and will also become the basis for the installation of built-in lamps.

Furniture and layout options

After all the visual and finishing moments, it is worth moving on to the most important stage - the arrangement of furniture. Narrow bedrooms don't offer many options, but following these guidelines will help you decorate your space comfortably:

- Do not arrange all the furniture you have along one wall, as is sometimes done in square dwellings, otherwise the room will look like a corridor;

- U-shaped arrangement will look good if the area allows it. Otherwise, you can restrict yourself to the L-shaped;

- Rectangular spaces are great for zoning. For example, a bed in the far part, where it will not interfere with movement, and a work area at the beginning.

In this case, much depends on the size of the bedroom, the number of residents and functional areas. These points should also be taken into account when creating a design project. nine0005

Bed

Undoubtedly, the bed is the main compositional center of the room, placing it correctly means doing half the battle. It can be located across or along a long wall. The first option is preferable for wider rooms, since then there may not be room for movement. But such a layout will save the area for other items.

The second option is practically the only solution for small bedrooms. But it must be remembered that at least 70 cm should remain between the bed and the partition on both sides. The presence of one resident will simplify the situation, since then you can leave the passage only on one side, and put the bed close to the wall. nine0005

Designers advise to pay attention to models with forged legs - they visually add space. At the same time, the space under the bed can be used for additional storage.

Folding sofas are a real life saver for narrow spaces. When assembled, they do not occupy precious square meters, acting as a relaxation area, and at night, when movement around the room is minimal, they turn into a comfortable bed.

Other pieces of furniture

It is rare that a bedroom can do without a closet. It should be placed along a narrow wall, otherwise a tall object will only make the interior narrower. It is recommended to pay attention to the hanging shelves. nine0005

Problems may arise with work or dressing tables. You can organize them by the window using a window sill. In other cases, use the zoning principle by placing a table along or across one of the walls.

Furniture should be compact, ergonomic and minimalistic in design. It is appropriate to purchase modern transformer models that will help organize every meter of the room.

Decor and lighting

To begin with, it is worth considering purchasing a large mirror for a long wall, which will make the bedroom a little wider. If you put it along the narrow part, it will only lengthen the space. nine0005

In other details, it is preferable to confine ourselves to a few decorative accents, since a large number of objects break up the area. Massive curtains are useful for a small wall, but it is recommended to stay on blinds or transparent curtains.

A good tip is to insert square objects that will correct the geometry. For example, several paintings, panels, carpet on the floor will help to achieve the desired effect.

As much as you want to create interesting lighting, avoid mounting lights around the perimeter. It is better to focus on the central part - a large chandelier, enhancing the local light with the help of several asymmetrically located lamps. nine0005

Narrow bedroom design - photo

Our photo selection, which contains beautiful bedroom designs with narrow geometry, will help to consolidate the theoretical part. Some rooms are miniature in size, others have a large number of functional items. But each of them proves that a narrow bedroom is not a sentence, but an interesting feature. Happy viewing and inspiration!

Design of a narrow bedroom (16 photos), interior options for a narrow bedroom

In the interior of a narrow bedroom you have to "dance" from the entrance - the location of the door and windows determines the planning solution by 90%. We learn from the example of projects of interior designers from Russia, France, Malaysia.

Chernenko Olga / White & Black Design Studio

Layout #1: long bedroom - entrance in the corner along the short wall
In such a narrow long bedroom, the bed is usually placed across, and the wardrobe is placed at the entrance (where massive furniture is not evident). Let's see how designers propose to equip a narrow bedroom.

Idea: Aisle shelf
“I really didn't want to hang the TV on a bare wall,” explains project designer Olga Chernenko from White & Black Design Studio. — And I offered the customers a variant with a wall panel. We chose a light oak panel. In addition to beauty, they thought of a useful action: there is a small shelf below where you can put candles, photos or put your phone. The shelf didn't change the width of the aisle, but added functionality." nine0115

Idea: roundabout
At first glance, shelving ideas are similar. But in the project of Tatyana Alenina, the passage along the bed is small (to make it more convenient to change bed linen). But the main path to the window still goes through the dressing room: it is located behind the headboard (look at the plan).

Tip: Unlike the usual compartments, which move in different planes, such doors in the closed state cannot be distinguished from swing doors. nine0115 _________________________

BESPOKE Interior Design & Production

Layout #2: usually dictates the input. If it is shifted to one of the corners, the bed is turned "face" into the window, and the storage system is made along the wall at the entrance. The same is done if the length of the room is not enough, as in this project by BESPOKE Interior Design & Production (Munich, Germany). nine0005

If the length of the room allows, you can organize a full walk-in wardrobe.

Viola Levina

Idea: walk-in wardrobe
In this project, the complex configuration of the walls made it possible to make only one full-fledged wardrobe. The wall opposite is occupied by niches for small things.

Viola Levina

Pay attention to the photo above: the cabinets are built-in - their ends are closed with specially erected partitions of the same width. This creates the illusion that there is no furniture. A long narrow bedroom seems more proportionate. nine0005

The solution for a very narrow bedroom is a bed that occupies the entire space from wall to wall. In order to create at least a little illusion of security, drywall “ears” were added to the headboard (they have convenient niches for storing small items).

Another solution: the bed was placed on the podium, in the manner of a futon. And for privacy, a rack with a desktop was built at the head. Designer: De Bjorn Concept (Malaysia)

Idea: divide the room into two
living area with a sofa, as in the plan above.

In this case, it is most reasonable to use pocket-type sliding doors with glazing. Through it, natural light will fill the part of the narrow bedroom-living room left without the sun. nine0115 _________________________

Layout #3: a narrow bedroom in Khrushchev usually occupies the entire room in this situation. We have to put up with the fact that the sleeping place actually moves to the window into the corner - there is practically no room for a detour. For convenience, it is better to put a bed with a lifting mechanism in order to use every millimeter for storage. nine0005

Jours & Nuits

Layout #4 : narrow small bedroom - entrance in the corner of a long wall
The bed in this situation is usually placed at the farthest part of the room. But there are also exceptions to the rule.

Idea: the air before my eyes
In this French project, the hostess started from the "given" - the wardrobes by the window were already built-in, as well as the built-in bookcase. Wallpaper zones the headboard. The bed was simply moved as far as the open door would allow. nine0005

Jours & Nuits

This solution, firstly, allowed us to “win the air”: it is pleasant to wake up without burying your nose in the wall. And secondly, a place for a desktop at the door would be completely uncomfortable - it is much more pleasant to work by the window.

Idea: color zoning
A room with a similar layout in Russia (only 13.5 m2). The entrance is located on a long wall (opposite the sofa), in the niche there used to be a voluminous closet.

Polina Anikeeva

The designer was invited for a facelift “in a modern style” before the apartment was handed over, so no large-scale alterations were expected. Polina Anikeeva suggested color zoning (the shade of the bedroom is more saturated). At the border of the zones, white columns of wardrobes were placed (instead of a compartment that previously occupied the entire wall with a sofa). nine0005

Idea : to visually enlarge a tiny window, the designer suggested using a desudeport above the window and an MDF frame. Together with a decorative radiator screen, they form a complete composition.

DECORATION PARISIENNE

Layout #5 : narrow room - entrance in a long wall, a short distance from the corner
Usually this layout allows you to "carve out" a full dressing room or storage system behind the door (it all depends on the distance behind it). If the room is too narrow, then the bed is turned to the window, as in the photo above.

K-studio Interior Design

If the room is wide enough, it is more convenient to place the bed across (as in the photo and plan below).

Idea: barn doors
The doors in this project are made of lightweight parquet board. The mechanism is quite heavy, therefore an important nuance: the partition must be made with the expectation of the severity of these doors.

Ekaterina Fedorova

Idea: a bed-and-a-half in the corner
If the location of the doors allows, sometimes they put a bed in a corner instead of a wardrobe. Most often, this is done with teenage bedrooms, for which an approach to the mattress from two sides is completely unnecessary. nine0115 ________________________

Furniture for a narrow bedroom: regular or built-in?
For a narrow room, designers often choose the "built-in bed" option. In the conditions of Malaysia (pictured), where there are no harsh winters and no cold blows from the window, this is a completely reasonable solution. Project: De Bjorn Concept. nine0005

DVEKATI

In Russian realities, it is better to move the bed a little away from the glass - this is exactly what the designers of the DVEKATI bureau did in this project of a small narrow bedroom.
