The phrase "formal dining room" often elicits images of stuffy, traditional dining spaces fit for fancy events only. But a dining room doesn't have to feel formal to be formal. Modern dining spaces are just as classy and alluring as traditional dining rooms, but a little more approachable.
Whether you're into the Mid-century modern look, or you want to opt for something even more contemporary, the streamlined look and feel of a modern dining room is a great way to give your space an updated, refreshing vibe.

Take a cue from this beautiful modern space and add a vibrant piece of modern art, like this one from johanna_reynolds, to create a finished, purposeful look in your dining room. Modern furniture is often comprised of stark lines and sleek angles, which could make a room feel stark and cold. But by adding a pop of color with an oversized piece of art, you can create a warmer, cozier look while maintaining a contemporary tone.

Breakfast table ideas
The breakfast table is often slightly smaller than the standard table and is located in the kitchen rather than in the formal dining room. Many old houses are built with the classic breakfast nook in the corner of the kitchen, with a banquette or bench instead of individual chairs. But in a small apartment or apartment, there may be enough space for a small breakfast table and a few chairs.
Decorative items on the breakfast table should be kept simple. A small glass vase with fresh flowers or a houseplant are fun and simple touches. To make it easier to eat in the morning, place a turntable or lazy sofa in the center of the table so that everyone in the family can easily reach milk, sugar and a napkin holder.
-
Candle Ideas for Dining Table
Nothing adds more warmth and coziness to a dining room than candles. Arrange candles and decorative candlesticks wherever possible - on the table, on shelves, in a sideboard or in a cupboard. An arrangement of candles, each at different heights, creates a gorgeous glowing table centerpiece, perfect for any special occasion.
Tall silver or glass chandeliers are a traditional dining room design idea that can fit into any decor style. Modernize them by adding sprigs of greenery laid on a linen tablecloth.
Be sure to use unscented or lightly scented candles, as highly scented candles will make it difficult to taste the food. Battery powered electric candles look almost as good as real ones and eliminate both the scent issue and the risk of fire.
-
Ideas for decorating the center of a dining table
The centerpiece of a dining table is its focal point, but it doesn't have to be limited to just one central spot. In fact, a long dining set or a collection of decorative accessories look great on an oblong or rectangular table. A strip of fabric can be the foundation for your centerpiece, and its length can be varied depending on the shape of the table and your sense of style.
Decor ideas are not limited to flowers or candles. Place a gorgeous glass dish or bowl on the table, empty or filled with fruit. A small sculpture is a suitable centerpiece, as is a tray on which to place a row of small potted succulents. Whatever centerpiece you choose, make sure it doesn't obstruct guests' view across the table.
-
Festive dinner table decorations
Holidays, parties and special occasions call for a festive dining table setting. Many people choose to periodically decorate the dining room depending on the season. For example, they display bunnies and Easter eggs in spring, flowers in summer, colorful leaves in autumn, and evergreen branches with pine cones in winter.
The Halloween table is the perfect place to experiment with pumpkins as centerpieces. In December, a tiny Christmas tree adorned with battery-powered lights will be a great center of attention in the dining area. Complete your Christmas table with pinecone candlesticks, a festive tablecloth, and other favorite Christmas decorations.
-
DIY Dining Table Ideas
Decorating your dining table doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. In fact, embellishments and centerpieces are some of the easiest DIY things to do, even if you have little to no needlework experience. Search your home for items that can be reused.
Glass jugs turn into beautiful vases, shells can be stacked in an antique wooden bowl, and greenery cut from your own bush will decorate your dining room quickly and for free.
-
Farmhouse style dining table ideas
The farmhouse style dining room brings back aesthetics to simpler times as it combines the best elements of the present and the past. Depending on the materials used, the design can lean towards both a relaxed atmosphere and a more formal one.
However, a farmhouse-style dining table doesn't have to be boring. Mix antiques and recycled items for an accent piece that will make your farmhouse look fabulous.
A scuffed white table is as beautiful as a polished wood top when it comes to farmhouse style. Mix and match chairs of different shapes and materials - all this will create a feeling of comfort and coziness. Hang a beaded chandelier to soften the space, and paint the metal with a matte bronze paint or other artificially aging finish.
-
Design ideas for glass dining table
Glass tables come in and out of fashion, but have been a fairly standard dining room idea for many years. Usually fans of glass tables prefer a more modern style of the room.
Glass tables are great for kitchens in small homes, as their "invisibility" helps make the room feel more spacious. Some glass tops are completely transparent, others are smoked glass or glass with a blue, pink or greenish tint.
If you have great chairs, a glass dining table is the best idea, as it provides an overview of each chair. The chandelier looks great above the table reflecting off the glass, especially if it has glass or crystal elements.
-
Ideas for decorating the kitchen table
The kitchen table is almost always smaller than the dining table, unless you have a small country style kitchen. Therefore, kitchen table decor items should be a little simpler than dining table decorations. Centered items should match the size of the table, but don't be afraid to use pretty rugs, napkins, and other decorative textiles.
In a particularly small space, the kitchen table becomes a small island with stools or a bar built into the wall. If your kitchen table is tiny, don't add centerpieces to it. However, even a small table can benefit from colorful rugs or a tablecloth that matches the tone of the kitchen.
-
Art Nouveau dining table ideas
Minimalism is a hallmark of modern dining room design. Look for furniture with simple, clean lines and no unnecessary details. Elegance and simplicity are key words when looking for a combination of modern dining table and chairs, but mixing textures and materials is acceptable. The overall neutral color scheme emphasizes the modern interior.
Mid-Century Modern is an era that is always appropriate in a modern home. The tulip leg table and Eames style dining chairs perfectly convey the feel of Art Nouveau even in a small kitchen or a separate dedicated area in an open concept living room. Be bold and use a color not often seen in kitchen or dining room centerpieces, like bright purple or chartreuse.
-
Rustic Dining Table Decoration Ideas
Rustic decor usually includes more masculine items, and the dining room is no exception. Furniture tends to have a rougher texture, with delicate linens being replaced with durable materials such as matting and sisal. Earth tones predominate, with more emphasis on warm wood finishes and an overall dark color scheme.
Candles, single or in metal sconces, help to add warmth and appeal to a rustic dining table. An impressive industrial-style lamp will draw attention to the dining area. A warped wood dining table top mounted on metal legs will continue the rustic industrial vibe, especially when flanked by dark metal chairs.

It is the dining table that brings together all household members, friends and relatives. The Way We Play
1. Natural light
By placing the dining table in front of the windows, you solve the problem of lighting at least during daylight hours. Not everyone, however, can boast of an abundance of natural light: in this Stockholm apartment, large windows are left over from the garment factory that was previously located here.

2. Single lamp above the table
To create an atmosphere of intimacy and coziness, we use a hanger hanging low over the dining table. In this interior, the authors of the project hung a designer lamp that gives diffused light, playing with shadows.

4. Skylights
The absence or lack of conventional windows can be compensated for by skylights. In addition, they let in up to two times more light than conventional vertical windows in the wall.
Town House Interiors
5. Light over
The main rule when choosing a roof window or windows is that the area of glazing should be at least 10% of the area of the illuminated room. That is, if the window area is 0.9sq.m., then it will be enough to illuminate a room of 9 sq.m. Philippe Starck for Kartell

6. Multiply the light
To double the lighting in the dining area, place a mirror opposite the lamp, as in this house in Germany.

7. Four walls
If there is no natural light as such, then one mirror over the dining table is indispensable. A crystal chandelier and mirrored walls will multiply the light.

11. Multiple lighting scenarios
Why not have multiple lighting scenarios for the same luminaires? By switching the light from the top to the bottom, we create a different atmosphere - cheerful and bright for a festive reception or calming and subdued for an everyday meal.

12. There can never be too much
One lighting device is definitely not enough over the dining table — there are different reasons to gather around it: a ceiling lamp is for ordinary everyday life in a family circle, candles are for romantic evenings.

13. Marking the boundaries
If the dining table is located near the cooking area, then such a neighborhood must be delimited by light. For example, hang a regular chandelier for the dining area, and track lights for the cooking area.
16. Spot lighting
When illuminating the dining table, one should not forget about other important items in this zone - chairs. You can highlight them with single rotating lamps.
Hovanskaya Olga
17. On the move
The choice of track lighting systems may be related to the layout of the dining area. For example, in this Moscow kitchen, the dining table is a transformer consisting of several parts. And when they move, the light accent also shifts.

Do not forget that the dining area can be used not only for its intended purpose. For example, on the kitchen sofa you can sit with a book - and here, without an additional light source, well, no way!

22. At different levels
The height of the pendants does not have to be the same: asymmetry will give dynamics to an overly calm interior of the dining area.

23. Above and below
Ideally, the length of the wire of the pendant lamp above the dining table should be adjustable, as in this Moscow apartment - to change the lighting (from bright to dim) and the atmosphere around.

24. Adjustable height
Some pendant lights have a special mechanism that allows you to adjust the height without much effort.

25. Reflective effect
Dark plafonds and lampshades trap part of the light, which can be corrected by their internal reflective surface.

26. Add some rhythm
The number of lamps above the dining table can be chosen based not only on the need for lighting, but also on the rhythmic components of the zone (number of shelves, chairs).
Spaciz Design Company Inc.
27. Dazzling!
So that the lamp does not blind those sitting at the dining table, it is worth giving preference to shades that diffuse light.

28. Flexible approach

36. Tethered
Single hangers with long cords are rarely used alone. Without a "companion" or "company", such lighting for the dining area is sometimes not enough. Do not look for similarities - use asymmetry, cords of different lengths.

39. Make it dark
Chandeliers with dark shades look luxurious, but you can't do without an additional light source in the dining area. After all, they let in only 20% of the light from the lamps installed in them.

40. In different directions
Using a single lighting fixture in the kitchen is considered a mistake, since different areas should be illuminated according to different scenarios. Another thing is if this lamp is equipped with adjustable shades.

41. Bon appetit

42. Put a dot
A spot light built into the stretch ceiling acts as an additional light source. But you can’t do without central lighting - spot light is not so bright and pleasant.

43. Level

45. Stand firmly on your feet

47. Directional light

48. Stand in corner
The floor lamp captivates with its mobility: it can always be pushed into a corner and used to illuminate the dining table only on occasion.
Thomas Herrmann
49. Such a diffused
Despite the fact that the floor lamp is translated as “torch” from French, the light from it is sometimes rather subdued. You can enhance the effect of diffused light with a paper lampshade.
50. Where to go
Dining table lighting doesn't have to be static - with a floor lamp you can move it where you want it.

51. On all fronts
Dining area lighting scenario can include several lighting options: LED strip on the ceiling, sconces on the wall and a lamp on a flexible tripod.
52. Single on the side
Sometimes it is useful to move away from templates and abandon paired wall lights.

53. Portable lamp
Mobile lamps have a very long cord that allows maximum freedom of movement. Though in the next room, even over the dining table, even on the street.
54. Wall lamp instead of traditional lighting
Modern wall lamps on long telescopic rails, due to their flexibility, can compete with a ceiling lamp. They can not only reach the table, but also highlight the picture or window.

56. In different directions
Wall sconces with multiple shades are similar in functionality to track lights: each shade can be responsible for lighting a separate area.

57. Street light at home
Indoor street lights are gaining popularity amid the craze for loft aesthetics: Garden and pavement lights, industrial-looking lamps and light bulbs are some of the most popular details in such interiors.

60. Add some air
Outdoor dining isn't just about sitting in the garden. You can also create an appropriate atmosphere in the apartment: put a slatted bench as a sofa and choose street lamps as a wall lamp.

61. Old-fashioned
Two wall chandeliers fill the dining area with gentle light and romance. It is better to arrange them a little further from the main light - in order to avoid conflict.

62. With a spark
Candles in wall chandeliers are not the safest lighting option. As an analogue, you can use sconces with shades that imitate candles.

63. Light from below
Additional lighting of the dining area can create a peaceful atmosphere - for example, LED table (bar) lighting. And illuminated walls can be made from a material with an interesting texture.

64. Worktop light
The LED strip can also be installed under the worktop. Just do not overdo it with the light, so that there is no feeling that you are in a bar.

65. Temperature
Appetite during meals will largely depend on the lighting of the dining area. The higher the lamp temperature in Kelvin (K), the colder the light. Choose lamps up to 5500K (warm white or neutral white) for this zone.

67. Colored lighting
Colored ceiling lighting is created along the contour using LED strip. It is attached with a self-adhesive base, which is convenient in terms of installation.

69. Add color
With the LED strip, the color of which can be switched using the controller, you feel like a director of your kitchen. The dining table can be illuminated in different colors depending on the occasion or time of day.

70. Stand up as a wall
If the LED strip does not seem enough, and its light seems dim, then you can use the LED panel or box. It can be placed both on the ceiling and on the wall.

71. Two in one
LED strip provides a wide field for creativity: it can be used not only to illuminate the ceiling above the dining table, but also to illuminate furniture and decor items. Or for a hood that doubles as a central light source, as in this Moscow apartment.

72. Illuminated multi-level ceiling
Cornice lighting can visually elevate a multi-level ceiling. It can be either individual spotlights or LED strip.

73. Inner Empire
Hidden light sources - lamps or LED strips - will emphasize not only a chic chandelier, but also the lower level of the ceiling.
74. Partial lighting
You can also organize partial lighting with LED strip - by installing it, for example, in moldings near the dining table. Or run along the ceiling or floor, creating the illusion of a hovering wall.

75. Age limit
If young people are gathering at the dinner table, then chandeliers and crystal may not be appropriate. Lighting can match the club theme - spotlights, lights, LED strips, halogen lamps.

76. Less is more
LED strips are less powerful than other light sources. This option is suitable for eco-interior design, Scandinavian style, minimalism.

77. A holiday that is always with you
Do not remove the Christmas tree garland immediately after the New Year - it will serve as decorative lighting, including the dining table. And the feeling of a holiday will not leave you while eating.
Nicole Crowder Design
78. Light bulbs on the wall
You can decorate a floor lamp, a mirror, separate decor items near the dining table with a garland. Or a slate wall with a decorative skull, like in this American dining room.
Louise de Miranda
79. Around the world
Decorative light sources - table lamps, garlands - can serve not only to illuminate the dining table, but also for an accent wall, as in this house in the Netherlands.

80. Plastic fantasy
For reasons of convenience and safety, you should choose a garland with plastic shades and LED lights. Such a lighting device will not heat up and will not break.
Hometown Evolution Inc.
81. Like outdoors
Try to create an atmosphere of gatherings on the veranda - put strings of light bulbs in two rows above the dining table.
82. Diagonally
Or you can break your usual vision and put a garland with light bulbs diagonally, as in this New York apartment.
Ghirardelli Architetti
83. In tandem
Even flammable objects can be decorated with a garland with LED bulbs. For example, an old snag, which after that will turn into a decorative lamp.
84. Spotlight
Such not very homely (at first glance) lighting fixtures as spotlights, street lamps and garlands will perfectly fit into a loft-style interior. Just don't use a spotlight to light the dining table (the flood can be too bright) - let it serve a decorative purpose.

85. Home comfort
A table lamp as a local light brings a special atmosphere of home comfort. Its light can also highlight the main thing - and hide the secondary.

86. Zoning with light
A small room can be divided into zones using table lamps. They will mark the light border, beyond which the workspace or bedroom begins.

87. Source of light and inspiration
Lighting fixtures made by yourself will add individuality to the dining area. For example, in this Berlin "communal for architects" all the furniture and lighting are made by the residents.

89. Bon appetit
To illuminate the dining table, it is better to choose lamps that generate a warm or neutral white color. Distorted colors can spoil the color of food and appetite.

90. Street spirit
Street signs can be used as additional light sources. In this British home, cool white neon tubes are attached to a frame and powered by the mains.
91. Advertisement break
The light-bulb advertising sign is not as cold as neon and is perfect for creating a cafe atmosphere right in the kitchen or dining room.
Natalie Myers
92. As an add-on
Of course, a street sign will not create enough lighting for a dining table - you cannot do without the main light. Combine different light sources and different chairs.
