Mick fleetwood maui home

Where is Mick Fleetwood’s House in Maui?

Having released a record that went on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide, the music legend Mick Fleetwood used his earnings to buy a desirable Maui mansion.

Mick Fleetwood is one of Maui’s most famous occasional residents, partly because he owns a hugely popular restaurant in Lahaina. If you’re interested in spotting the rock star, your best shot is to head to Fleetwood’s on Front Street.

Read this guide to find out all you need to know.

Who Is Mick Fleetwood?

Table of Contents

For anyone who might be unaware, Mick Fleetwood is the founding member—and part namesake—of easy-listening smooth rock band Fleetwood Mac.

They’re best known for their 1977 album Rumours, which features classics such as Dreams, Go Your Own Way, and Songbird. They’re also well known for inter-band strife, an ever-changing line-up, and some heavy drug use.

Where Does Mick Fleetwood Live On Maui?

Having spent much of his music career living and recording in sunny California, it’s no surprise to find that Mick Fleetwood finds himself drawn to Maui. The musician’s house is located just outside Napili Bay, on West Maui.

Napili Bay is a quiet tourist town, north of Lahaina town, and south of Kapalua. The beach of Napili is popular with families, as the gentle seas and soft white sands are fantastic for swimming and paddling.

But unlike other West Maui areas such as Ka’anapali, Napili doesn’t draw the crowd. A perfect place for an international rock star seeking some down time to buy a house!

The Home

Mick Fleetwood’s house isn’t the most lavish of Maui properties, but it’s still an impressive abode. With four bedrooms and two baths in the 2650 square feet property, it is a relatively understated house.

For a celebrity home, of course. Although, with a pool and backyard spa, plenty of room to lounge, and a canopy of tropical trees, we wouldn’t exactly turn down a chance to stay. In fact, he bought the house off fellow Fleetwood Mac bandmate, John McVie, in 2017.

The Fleetwood Mac and Maui connection actually goes back a long way. Fleetwood started his restaurant inspired by the famous Blue Max venue, a Lahaina nightclub that attracted some big stars in the seventies and eighties.

Although Blue Max may no longer be there, the spirit of it lives on at Fleetwood’s on Front Street.

Does Mick Fleetwood Own Fleetwood’s On Front Street?

It isn’t just the scenery that keeps Mick Fleetwood coming back to Maui, he also owns Fleetwood’s on Front Street in Lahaina.

The West Maui town of Lahaina is known as a tourist hub, with it’s iconic Front Street home to some of Maui’s greatest restaurants. And that includes Mick Fleetwood’s popular eatery.

Fleetwood’s on Front Street has become something of a Maui institution (and it’s also the best place to watch the Lahaina 4th of July fireworks).

Fleetwood’s on Front Street is more than happy to lean into the Fleetwood Mac connection, with a cocktail menu that’s heavy on the music puns. The food is fantastic, with an emphasis on classic meals and local ingredients. Try any of the freshly caught island fish, for a real treat.

Or Go Your Own Way—their pun, not ours—and put together a three course meal for a bargain price.

Are You Likely To See Mick Fleetwood In Lahaina?

If you’re hoping for a glimpse of Mick Fleetwood, we absolutely do not recommend trying to find his home. But, he does pop up from time to time at Fleetwood’s on Front Street.

Music actually forms a significant part of Fleetwood’s on Front Street, with daily sunset concerts serenading rooftop diners. If you’re lucky, you might find the man himself behind the microphone (or drum kit).

Although a performance from Fleetwood isn’t guaranteed, he does enjoy the opportunity to get up on stage.

If you aren’t lucky enough for a Mick Fleetwood performance, you can enjoy the local musicians who play regularly, and ease any lingering disappointment with a specialty crafted cocktail.

Rumors of a New Shop

And this might not be the end of Fleetwood’s Maui ventures. Rumors have it that he might be opening a new shop in Paia.

The North Shore town of Paia is making a name for itself among chilled out surfer types who enjoy the charm and quirks of the low-key destination.

Fleetwood’s newest venture might be at least partly inspired by Charley’s, the beloved Paia bar frequented by fellow rocker and Maui lover Willie Nelson.

Undoubtedly, Mick Fleetwood’s new venture will fit right in with the creative types that tend to flock to Paia.

How Much Time Does Mick Fleetwood Spend On Maui?

Although not a full-time Maui resident, Mick Fleetwood does spend a lot of time on the island.

With a thriving business to oversee, and such a lovely home waiting for him, Fleetwood seems more than happy to stay whenever he has the chance.

And he isn’t shy about exploring, either. Mick Fleetwood has been spotted by residents and visitors to Lahaina (even if his laid-back rocker style doesn’t exactly stand out in the crowd).

Having made a major impact in Lahaina with his popular Fleetwood’s on Front St. restaurant, Mick Fleetwood is getting ready to launch a North Shore establishment which he envisions as a unique store and gallery that will reflect the legendary musician’s journey over the last 50 years.

Opening at the end of October, the two-story House of Fleetwood sits at the entrance to Paia at 43 Hana Highway.

“It’s a labor of love,” said Fleetwood during an interview at his home in Kula. “My nephew Kells (Jesse) and his wife Sylvia are putting it together, so it’s a family thing. We have a lovely restaurant in Lahaina, and now we’re breaking into a retail business. It’s not music-driven but there’s a connection to family, and there’s branding and style, color and fun. It’s a lovely thing to be doing. I love Paia.”

The store’s yellow exterior reflects his family’s love of color. Fleetwood recalled how his mother loved vibrant colors, and she once turned down his gift to her of a black leather designer handbag.

With both a physical and online presence, the House of Fleetwood will feature various brand products, including the drummer’s signature ukuleles, handmade on Maui in collaboration with Mele Ukulele. The store will also carry ukuleles designed by George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison.

“We’re going to have some of Dhani’s ukuleles there, and for me, it’s my connection with George, who used to be my brother-in-law,” Fleetwood noted. “He was a huge ukulele advocate, and I’ve learned to play a little bit. I literally won’t go anywhere without one.”

There will be Maui-made T-shirts, Fleetwood Mac merchandise, works of art, local designer pottery by Sherri Dhyan, books, music and fun products like “Yellow Submarine” coolers on display.

The project is being overseen by Fleetwood’s nephew, who worked on some Fleetwood Mac tours, and guided the publication of the lavish book “Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One: 1967-1974.” A production designer who works in L.A., Jesse explained “the store is more about Mick’s journey.”

The building will house a mini gallery upstairs.

“We’ll have photos of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Bob Marley, people that Mick loves or is inspired by,” said Jesse.

“It will be more a gallery upstairs and a retail place downstairs,” added Fleetwood.

Making Maui his home base for many years, just like with his restaurant, where he enjoys occasional pop-ins to greet diners, he plans to become a familiar presence in Paia.

In tandem with the store launch, Fleetwood has formed a new island-based band called House of Rumours, to present occasional gigs. Former New York session guitarist Joe Caro is serving as music arranger, and the band includes Gretchen Rhodes, Eric Gilliom, Mark Johnstone, Lenny Castellanos and Paul Marchetti. Hawaiian falsetto star Raiatea Helm and percussionist Lopaka Colon will also perform with House of Rumours at some shows.

“Over 10 years ago, I planned to put a band together on island here, and then I got really busy with Fleetwood Mac,” he explained. “Raiatea will be part of it, but not on a permanent basis. She’s thrilled. We’re getting serious about how we present the band with proper rehearsals. This is where I live, and I really want to get focused here, knowing there are no more two-year tours with Fleetwood Mac, and I will be more on island now.

The band will shoot a “sizzle” video at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as a promotion tool.

“We will film at the MACC so we can say this is who we are and what we do,” he said. “We’re having fun. Songs that I love will augment our show.”

Enjoying drumming again with Maui musicians, he reported, “I haven’t really played full-on since the Peter Green tribute in London in February last year. It was the COVID blues. For a while, music really stopped. I missed it.”

With the House of Fleetwood likely destined to become a popular nexus for visitors to Paia, Fleetwood concluded, “We want it to be a real port of call in Paia. We’re trying to create real stories, and there’s a connection with stuff that I love. We want people to feel like it’s lovely to go there. We want them to have a great experience.”

Mick Fleetwood: "Big Daddy"

British musician Michael celebrates his 70th birthday today John Kells Fleetwood, or simply Mick Fleetwood. His surname became a part Fleetwood Mac Band Names, the permanent drummer of which he has been for half a century. Mick has never been prolific composer or creative leader of the group, but it is his skillful management of his affairs allowed Fleetwood Mac not only not fall apart, but also achieve the status of one of the most popular rock ensembles planets. Stevie Nicks and other bandmates affectionately refer to Fleetwood as "Big daddy", which is kind of funny considering the drummer never showed up the oldest member of the group. However, this is very telling. evidence of Mick's high authority in the team. Today we will remember some facts from his life.

Mick was born into the family of an officer in the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. Shortly after the birth of his son, the father received the next title of “Wing Commander”, which corresponds to the Russian lieutenant colonel. On duty, the command began to send John Joseph Kells Fleetwood to different countries. Thus, in childhood and youth, Mick lived for some time, first in Egypt, and then in Norway, where he mastered the local language at a high level.

First Fleetwood Mac line-up, 1968 Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer.

Mik's friends and fellow students remember and describe him as a dreamer, a very intelligent and even aristocratic youth with a great sense of humor. Even then, Fleetwood was unusually charming and charismatic, when he began to speak, those around him suspended their affairs and became attentive listeners. With all this, the study of the future "Big Daddy" was not given at all, which Mick himself attributed to congenital memory problems that did not allow him to memorize school material for a long time.

Mick received his first drum kit from his father at the age of 13. He taught himself how to play it by listening to the records of The Shadows, The Everly Brothers and Cliff Richard and trying to beat them to the beat. When he was 15, he dropped out of school, because with his low academic performance, nothing good shone for him there, and went to London to make his way in music. Parents, by the way, approved the son’s decision and supported him in everything.

Peter Bardens and Mick Fleetwood in The Cheynes, c. 1963

The most important role in Fleetwood's career was played by keyboardist Peter Bardens, a future member of the Camel band. They lived next door in London. In 1963, Peter, whose band The Cheynes needed a drummer, invited a young acquaintance to join. Thus, Mick got the experience of performing (in particular, as an opening act for the up-and-coming The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds). Bardens then recruited a drummer for his new band, Peter Bs, with Peter Green on guitar. Soon, Green himself, who came under the wing of John Mayall and replaced Eric Clapton in The Bluesmakers, lured Fleetwood to himself as well. The bassist was John McVie. And then the creation of Fleetwood Mac by Peter and Mick followed.

Young Fleetwood (left) in London's trendy crowd

By the way, Mick started quite early to play in clubs, even with restrictions on access to too young musicians and visitors. It's all about the aforementioned "aristocratic" appearance and high growth - Fleetwood seemed older than his years, and it never occurred to anyone to be interested in his real age.

Sometimes Mick was wrong. So, he argued with Peter Green, saying that the composition "Oh Well" from the album "Then Play On" would not be successful. Green, the songwriter, objected. It was Peter who was ultimately right - "Oh Well" was the only Fleetwood Mac single to hit the US "hot hundred" of all released before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined the group.

Mick Fleetwood and his wife Jenny Boyd (sister of Patty, then wife of George Harrison) was recorded in this studio. By a happy coincidence, this was the disc of the duo Buckingham Nicks. In view of the departure of Bob Welch from Fleetwood Mac, Fleetwood some time later got in touch with Buckingham and, at a joint dinner, made an offer to join his group. Lindsey replied that he would agree on the condition that Stevie Nicks also become a member of the ensemble. Mick didn't mind.

Mick Fleetwood during the recording sessions of the famous "Rumours" album

During the creation of the album "Rumours", which eventually became a worldwide hit, the band went through a difficult period. The marriage of John and Christine McVie broke up, the romantic relationship of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks ended. Mick Fleetwood also divorced his wife, but it was he who took on the main burden of maintaining the team and keeping the members together, not allowing Fleetwood Mac to fall apart on the threshold of great fame. In recognition of the merits of the drummer, Christine wrote a song with the affectionate title "Oh, Daddy" (despite the fact that Fleetwood is 4 years younger than her).

club where Fleetwood Mac played their first shows and where the band was well received. Fleetwood began to wear them to every performance as a talisman.

Fleetwood Mac hit period: Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham

Fleetwood considers the not-so-successful “Rumours” and the follow-up album “Tusk” to be the most important work in the band's career (in which his colleague John McVie does not agree with him, who did not like the experimental sound of the record). The fact that "Tusk" was completed and published, according to the drummer, guaranteed the band's continued existence. Mick also defended in every possible way in the press Lindsey Buckingham, the main "instigator" of studio experiments, blaming the radio station "RKO" for the relative failure of the album.

In the late 1970s, Fleetwood was developing a project for a Fletwood Mac tour of the USSR, but the entry of Soviet troops into Afghanistan did not allow these plans to come true.

“She really crystallized that whole period of the early 1980s when we were all in our 30s and starting to look back on our lost youth” - Mick on one of his favorite FM songs, “Gypsy” from the album Mirage.

Fleetwood's 1981 solo LP "The Visitor" was inspired by the drummer's trip to Africa, during which he listened extensively to local musicians, recorded and jammed with some of them. In many ways, The Visitor anticipated Paul Simon's hit albums, Graceland and The Rhythm of Saints.

Mick is a big fan of the Irish band The Corrs. At 19In 98, he personally asked the band to record their own version of Fleetwood Mac's hit "Dreams". As a result, the cover rose to 6th place in the British charts.

Mick Fleetwood, 2011

In collaboration with music journalist Steven Davies, Mick produced and published a publication entitled "Fleetwood - My Life and Adventures with Fleetwood Mac". The book received a lot of flattering reviews in the press and is considered one of the best works in the genre of memoirs from the world of rock music - and this despite Mick's already known memory problems ... or maybe thanks to them? Fleetwood honestly admitted that he agreed to this work in order to improve his deplorable financial situation. Some colleagues in Fleetwood Mac were unhappy with the individual stories that were reflected in the memoirs.

Oddly enough, Fleetwood likes Justin Bieber. Once Mick went to his performance with his children, after which he praised the young Canadian, calling him "a great showman in terms of approach to his audience", and concluded that Bieber was "damn good."

Christine McVie .

Kristin will also have a hand in the band's new album. In an interview with Maui News , Mick Fleetwood revealed that McVie has written several songs for the new record and they will start recording together this month.

McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 after marrying the band's bassist. For 28 years, she was a songwriter, vocalist and keyboardist in the group.

Kristin has been rumored to be reuniting with Fleetwood Mac since last year, when McVie appeared onstage at the O2 in London during the band's performance to perform "Don't Stop".

Later, in an interview with The Guardian , Christine said she would be "thrilled" if Fleetwood Mac asked her to perform with them again.

Dreams is a masterpiece, one of the band's most beautiful compositions. Dreams is the most successful song in the history of "Fleetwood Mac" and its success is fully deserved. She has a completely unimaginable atmosphere - you can’t describe it in words, you have to listen.

Stevie's singing in Dreams is top notch. Mick and John's playing is great, but Lindsay's performance is the best - his guitar is something.

Christine McVie returns to squad Fleetwood Mac was only technically a secret. This has been talked about for the past few months. But when the official announcement came that McVie was coming back, you had to see for yourself.

Rolling Stone called Christine on the phone and talked about a reunion tour called "On With The Show".

Recall that McVie is responsible for some of the most recognizable hits of Fleetwood Mac : "Don't Stop" , "Little Lies" , "Everywhere" and "You Make Loving Fun" . However, in 1998, Christine left the team and completely disappeared from the horizon. The remaining members of the team said that McVie would definitely not return. Why did you leave in 1998?

I suddenly developed aerophobia. And it was not a joke, but a real fear. I also bought a house in England and came to the conclusion that I had already traveled enough. I'm tired of living on suitcases. I didn't quarrel with the group. I just had to leave then. It was the right time for this. Besides, I was worried about the possibility of earthquakes in America, and I am terribly afraid of earthquakes. So I chose the right moment!

Did you go to the Fleetwood Mac show during the break?

Yes, I have seen it several times. It was very strange and amazing at the same time. I watched the show with the sound engineer directly from his console. They sounded amazing, as they always have.

How did it happen that you wanted to come back?

About two years ago, I thought, “What am I doing? I just missed the friendship with these four wonderful people.” I was sad without music and without the opportunity to compose it again. I couldn't imagine doing anything outside of Fleetwood Mac . This is my musical family.

And what was the key moment?

An epiphany happened to me. Because I subconsciously always knew that I wanted to return to the group. I couldn't rot in the English countryside indefinitely. I also wanted to do something special for myself.

I went to a therapist to talk about my fear of flying. It so happened that Mick Fleetwood was in London at that time to advertise the tour Fleetwood Mac Europe.

He usually lives in Maui. And the therapist says to me: “Where would you like to fly if you were on a plane right now?”. I answer: "To Maui!". So all I had to do was dial Mick's number and say, "Hey Mick, I'm flying to Maui. I'll be on the plane soon." And he replies: “Great, but I’m not there, I just flew to England. So why don't you, honey, just come back to our group?"

How are you with the voice. What did you have to do to get in shape for the tour?

We have one guy who has been traveling with a group for many years. He's just an expert in vocal exercises. I am sure that he will go with us this time too. My voice is perfect. Right now I haven't worked on my main parts yet, but according to rough estimates, everything is going great. As they say, if your serve is in order, then you should not worry about the rest.

And how long is your tour?

Who knows? It will be a world tour. Let's see what happens when we play all the scheduled dates. A year is a very long time. I think that the scheme will be like this: we tour until someone says that they can no longer.

The band's fans are wildly happy that you are back. After all, your place is in Fleetwood Mac.

Yes, it was written for me. I was very warmly received by all our staff: managers, the whole team. It feels like you're back in a big family. It is fantastic. I didn't think they were so eager to get me back. And I had no idea that I would be so worried. I still have emails from Stevie Nicks in which she offers me money for a return. “Just don’t leave me alone in this family!” she wrote to me. And I remember very well what Miku said when she left: "Don't you dare ask me to come back." Then I was very serious.

Do you regret it now?

I don't think we should waste time regretting past mistakes. It is better to look into the future and try to have a cool time that you have left. Mick and I, by the way, are perfectly physically prepared for the tour. I did everything to bring the body into perfect shape. Here yoga helps, and breathing exercises. I am completely healthy. I'm not at all worried about this.

You said earlier that you suffered from depression. There is probably no better medicine than old friends and music.

Yes, everything worked out perfectly. And finally, I want to say this. When I left, Fleetwood Mac rearranged in an unprecedented fashion. The musicians came and went, but it was as if the air was walking in these amazing songs.

All the time there was room for my piano.
