Loft beds make good use of any room. A bed always takes up quite a lot of space. This might be a problem if you live where there is not unlimited space, like in a smaller bedroom or just a smaller studio apartment. A loft bed gives you the opportunity to maximize your space.

Loft beds are a go-to solution for those with small bedrooms or small apartments.  Most of us love our bed as much as we dislike the amount of precious floor space it takes up. Sometimes the loftiest ideas are the best; introduce a high quality loft bed into your home to free up the maximum amount of space below. A loft bed is a bed frame that elevates the mattress high off the floor, with a ladder that lets you climb your way up to sleep.

Different kinds of loft beds

What’s similar in all loft beds is that the sleeping area is elevated, and you can use the space beneath for any number of fun or practical purposes. But while each loft bed shares this noble function, they do differ in design, style and – most importantly – the amount of space provided beneath.

At IKEA, you’ll find we’ve simplified some decisions for you. You’ll find, for example, loft beds with built-in desk underneath, or loft beds with clever storage solutions such as drawers and cupboards. Our ready-built bed storage solutions make maximal use of the space underneath, since the dimensions are made to fit perfectly.  Meanwhile, you don’t have to worry about pairing two pieces of furniture – these styles are designed to match.

But if you want a loft bed with an empty space beneath, then you’ll of course find that too. The advantage is obvious – you can decide precisely what you want to store beneath, from a gorgeous bookshelf to a cosy sofa and armchair corner. You can even create your own desk for studying or working to place beneath the loft bed – and then in the future use the space for something completely different! The sky’s the limit, and the loft bed let you sleep closer to that sky.

Full size loft bed

Most of our loft beds fit a 90 cm wide mattress. This size works for adults, teenagers and most adults. Some customers may prefer a bigger loft bed with a wider mattress. If so, STORÅ loft bed has space for a 140 cm mattress so you can spread out fully. Mattresses are sold separately. This allows you to choose the mattress type best suited to you, providing the mattress size dimensions fit the loft bed frame.

STORÅ Loft bed frame, black, Full/Double

it's high to the ceiling. good build.STEVENNice bunk and lots of room in the bottom. The problem is it's very high. Very close to the ceiling. 7ft high. Measure to see if it fits first. Took forever to assemble. It's nice and solid.4

Full size high loftBellaThis is the 2nd one I have purchased in 6 years. Great full size loft! someone 5’8 can still walk under comfortably. Product held up very well overtime.5

Needs improvementFernando Y.Here's a few issues I've encountered when assembling this product: 1) As others pointed out, you need pieces from boxes #1 and #3, not sure if parts could be reshuffled to only need from box #1 2) Some parts are very difficult to identify, adding stickers would help immensely 3) The manual contains at least one error in the form of number of bed slats (manual says 16 and there's only 15) and positioning of bed slats - manual gives the impression that one side is colored and the other doesn't when both sides are colored. 4) Overall quality is very low. One of the nuts sunk in the wood as I tightened to the point that the wood cracked. Maybe if a semi circular washer was used similar to some Ikea chairs it would be better in that sense 5) It is flimsy as others pointed out. Doesn't feel as it is gonna collapse, but very flimsy overall. I added some L brackets and the screws would not tighten fully due to wood being too soft2

Teen Son Loves ItVictoriaI initially ordered a way more expensive loft bed at PB, but it didn’t work well in my sons room. This bed technically didn’t fit either, but if I was going to hack anything, it would be the less expensive bed. This is a great quality loft bed. It fits well in my sons room and gives him a lot more floor space. My only issue is that the bed is very shaky. Once I figure out how to fix that, we’ll be all good!5

Great bunk bed for myTheresaGreat bunk bed for my kids! Looks great in their room!5

Kids bedBrittanyMy kiddo loved his new bed! He was so excited for it5

Turned out Perfect!!!Carolina D. We bought this bed because our son's bedroom was small and we wanted him to have floorspace to play in. At first I was not too keen on the loft bed as it was too wobbly for my comfort. Our 6 year old was not too keen on it's height either. I decided to modify it a bit by cutting off 12" to drop it down a bit. This made it less wobbly (still anchored it to the wall for safety) and our son was more comfortable with the height. Not to mention that even though we have vaulted ceilings it was really close to the ceiling fan. This height adjustment solved that issue as well. Now I do not need to worry if my kiddo will hit his head on the ceiling fan if he wakes up in the middle of the night. All in all we could not be happier with our purchase, he still has plenty of room for his table and as he grows he can still place a desk or make it a sitting area if he wishes to.5

space saverRealvinMy son loves it. Works very well in small rooms5

Great upgrade for small room with high ceilingJasonThis was great! I'm 6'3" and while I need to squat when I'm under the bed, the rest of my family can walk under it without an issue. My son loves it and has his computer desk under the bed. We stapled his old twin-sized bed mattress foam foam topper on the underside of this bed so that it acts as a sound absorber when he's on his microphone for school (reduces echo) and it also doubles as a head protector for me when I get up from his desk and stand up too quickly. I used wood glue on the pegs (where appropriate) and propped the bed against the wall to reduce the bed from shaking. Used an 8" mattress from another warehouse store, but used cardboard (from the shipping box for this bed) on the slats to ensure that the mattress wouldn't ooze through the slats, which are about 2.5-3" gaps. Making the bed is VERY difficult due to the height, but it isn't the fault of the fact that the STORA is up high. Later this summer, I'll need to adjust a fan that comes too close to the bed (raise it up on its extension pipe). Other than that, I got the last one at my IKEA - it seems that a lot of wood products are out of stock right now. 5

Great bed just need aGWENGreat bed just need a little more support from the base5

Loft bed to maximize spaceDENISEWe added two Alex desks underneath the Stora loft bed for my daughter... one to game on and the other to do schoolwork on. She absolutely loves it and the bed is solid and sturdy!5

It’s sooooo affordable and cute.MarydayIt’s sooooo affordable and cute. If you have tall ceilings in a small room, it’s a game changer.5

Great loft bedKeliwackWe bought this last month, my daughter really likes it. The assembly was a bit difficult due to pieces not being marked. I wish there was more than one support beam going across the underneath, but it is pretty sturdy.5

Not very strongAva519I bought this bed for my 14yr (at the time) old son, as he wanted a studio feel in his room with a futon, fridge, etc. He is a y’all boy and about 165lbs but not surpassing weight limits. The bed is a little wobbly but be of the planks on the ladder broke when he was coming down and another one is now cracked. I emailed IKEA to see if I can purchase replacements. Awaiting response.2

WigglyAnonymousThe bed took a bit of tome to put together, but the instructions were fairly easy to follow. The bed is a bit wiggly and that is disconcerting when you climb up. The design of long, thin legs with a heavy bed does not allow for a sense of confidence when climbing up onto the bed and moving around. We will likely add cross braces to the loft bed to make it more sturdy.3

Needs workCece5The store I bought from had one option for a full loft bed, which was this. The pros: it's pretty & does save a lot of space The cons: the tag said ceiling had to be 8ft10. You need a taller ceiling. We had to cut about 3.5 inches off the posts. Pro! The wood is so soft it was a breeze to cut through. It's a struggle to put together but that's atypical. It will wobble we have to drill it into the wall stud. The center beam is NOT enough if you weigh more than a 10yr old. It says 250 weight limit but my mattress (maybe 50lbs) plus my 140 was too much. We bought two more beams and installed them. Isn't worth 299.2

Perfect Bed and DurableJoMama8playinI love this bed! It is the prefect bed for a child like my son. It fits perfectly in the space and allows for a lot of under bed storage, to the point I have his long student desk and chest of drawers under the bed. Tons of floor space and built strong. The only thing is every few weeks I have to come along and re-screw the middle beam and side rails to make sure my child is safe up there. This bed is classic black and works with an decor also!5

Good use of spacejanezoI wanted this for my 10 year old, he absolutely loves it! His room has a high ceiling so we wanted it to allow more living room below. It is well made which means sturdy; the full size mattress area will allow him to grow and still be in the space.5

Only for short mattressesyolosquad420They recommend a minimum ceiling height of 9 ft, but mind that the depth of the bed platform is meant for mattresses up to 8 in. Many foam mattresses are thicker, my Casper is 12 in. This can set you dangerously high above the side rails. Installation is a bear. I wouldn't attempt this without a power drill, there are 150+ screws. Pay attention to the order of the steps. When it tells you not to fully screw in something just yet, do as told. The center beam under the slats is pretty flexible. I reinforced it with steel strap ties and screws (they can also be nailed in).4

Too TallMommaYoliI bought this for a Christmas for my 10 year old. He wanted a loft bed. He was in a twin and I figured we should upgrade to a full. I didn’t realize how high up this bed is. I worry that one day he’ll fall. If I had to purchase again I’m not sure I would. It’s even difficult for me to get up there to put sheets on.3

Comfortable and practical solution for a small apartment - a loft bed

We present to your attention an interesting, modern solution. The design of the bed consists of two tiers: on the top there is a sleeping place, and the bottom one remains free. Below you can place a work area, personal space for relaxation or install a second bed.

Placement of furniture consisting of a loft bed, a wardrobe and a desktop in a children's room for a girl

There are different models of this type of bed in furniture stores, and in this article we will talk more about loft beds using the example of Ikea.

The sides are high crossbars, they will not allow the sleeping person to fall out of the bed. The height of the mattress should not exceed 10 cm. The model is higher than the previous one, so it is more suitable for teenagers and adults. nine0003

Model STURO

The frame of a large wooden Sturo loft bed that can accommodate two adults

The Sturo loft bed is made of durable and environmentally friendly material - pine wood. The ladder can be installed both on the right and on the left. This model is an order of magnitude higher than others, so the ceiling height must be at least 270 cm. The allowed height of the mattress is 19see, but no more. When cleaning, it is worth remembering that the tree is prone to swelling, so wipe the bed first with a damp cloth, and then remove the remaining moisture with a dry one.

Pros

Beautiful and functional loft bed built into the closet with sofa below

In an apartment where there is very little free space , the loft bed is a real salvation - two zones are combined in one space at once. The lower "tier" can serve:

Unusual furniture with seating area and built-in bookcases and wardrobe downstairs and a window bed on the second level

Original loft bed with extra bed downstairs and built-in storage

These are just some of the ways you can use the space, all the details and other ways depend on your own desires and imagination.

Cons

Bed located in an invisible spot under the ceiling in a small apartment

Loft bed is fashionable, interesting and very comfortable, but not safe. A very important drawback of such a bed is the risk of falling. It is strongly not recommended to purchase such a bed:
