In celebration of a century of the AGA, we’ve rounded up our favourite kitchens where the AGA is not just an appliance, but a focal point of the whole room. From sophisticated city kitchens to pared-back country spaces, our love for the AGA shows no signs of slowing down
By Christabel Chubb
It's rare to find a country kitchen in the pages of House & Garden that doesn't proudly feature an AGA somewhere in its midst. Invented in 1922 by a Swedish Nobel-winning physicist, the heat-storing AGA has become the heart of many a home, often taking on the functions of radiator, clothes-dryer, toaster, and kettle all in one beautifully-designed package. Think of socks drying over the tea-towel rail and piping hot Sunday lunches emerging from the various ovens. Famed for its longevity (AGAs regularly last around 50 years), the instantly recognisable unit comes in a range of colours, making it a versatile piece.
Today, a century after the AGA’s debut, they don’t just belong in large country houses, but can often be found in the chicest of urban kitchens. Sometimes they blend seamlessly with the cabinets around them, while in other houses they are the focal point of the space, in contrasting colours or with their own tiles and hearths surrounding them. In celebration of this most recognisable and timeless of appliances, we’ve rounded up our favourite kitchens where the AGA takes centre stage.

Native ShareBuilt around the existing navy AGA, Bridie Hall describes this look as ‘typical Ben Pentreath country-house style’. Traditional cabinets with olive-green paintwork in a gloss finish provide a rich contrast with cheery red and white Marmoleum floor tiles arranged in a chequerboard pattern.

An AGA came with Louise Roe’s house when she bought it. One of the few design ideas Louise imported over from her time in America is the pot-filler above the cooker, a handy device that you don't see often in the UK.

Aga Kitchens, vintage aesthetics in your kitchen
Aga kitchens retain the spirit of the kitchens of the 40s. . Even today, they are still made from cast iron in the traditional way, as they were 70 years ago, which prevents them from being mass-produced. Yes, ovens now run on gas or electricity, and stoves have been replaced with gas burners and glass ceramics.
These kitchens of great tradition are made in the UK and from there they are exported all over the world, where they are popular not only for their vintage aesthetic but also for their ability to retain the moisture, texture and taste of food, unlike modern kitchens, thanks to their system radiation heat.
Aesthetically the most representative in this kitchen are ovens ; from three, four and up to five ovens. In the simplest model, the top right oven is used for roasts, the bottom left oven is used for baking, and the bottom right oven is used for slow cooking. Lots of possibilities to decorate a professional kitchen.

History of AGA
The company has deep roots in Shropshire, the cradle of the industry, and AGA kitchens are still made here. Its inventor and Nobel Prize winner in physics Dr. Gustav Dahlen designed and patented the AGA kitchen in 1922. , the best performance ever made.
Blinded by a horrific accident, he was recuperating at home when he realized his wife was using an oven that was dangerous, dirty, and exceptionally slow. So he invented the cuisine that came to the UK at 1929 and which in the 40s will become the success of , changing the lives of chefs around the world.
For 34 years AGA was only available in cream, but in 1956 that changed and new colors became popular. Other important changes were the introduction of gas stoves in the 60s. and most recently, in the 80s, the first Aga electric cooker was created.
Kitchen production and operation
AGA kitchens continue to be manufactured to the same standards that have made the brand one of Britain's most popular brands. Cast iron is poured into molds. and each casting is processed by hand, thus achieving that each of the castings has a characteristic and unique surface.
kitchens made in this way use radiant heat to cook , heat that helps preserve the moisture, texture and flavor of the food. Heat is transferred to cast iron ovens, constantly being removed from all surfaces simultaneously, providing a smoother cooking experience than direct heat from a conventional resistance oven.
Cast iron also helps to reduce cooking odors and aroma transfer, which allows you to cook different dishes in the same oven and at the same time unlike other kitchens.
What does this offer us?
In the , the basic model, corresponding to the R3 series, combines three ovens with different temperatures, suitable for roasts, biscuits or steamed vegetables. Roasting oven, baking oven and stewing oven are the names of these ovens, which you can also find in other series. Do you want to know what each is for? We tell you:
- Roast oven . The hottest of the AGA ovens is large enough to accommodate large cuts of meat, making it easy for guests to grill. In addition to grilling, this oven is ideal for grilling food as it has a new grill that heats up in just two minutes and has a high temperature. The solera pizza is fantastic.
- Pastry oven . Similar to a brick oven in a traditional bakery, this oven radiates moderate heat to bake moist, fluffy cakes evenly. Since cast iron retains heat, you can also open the door during cooking to check the doneness. Ideal for those who are nervous while waiting!
- Low heat oven . It is ideal for simmering or finishing dishes such as casseroles or puddings. It can also be used for steaming, as the radiant heat keeps the juiciness and structure of the vegetables.
Also at the top Yep is equipped with two burners , one for boiling and the other for boiling, which can be used simultaneously or independently. This is the case in some models with three ovens, while others replace one of these burners with an induction one with two or three zones. Because although we only talked about the R3 series, there are kitchens with five ovens in the Aga catalog.
Ideal for decorating large cottages or rustic kitchens. , the R series of this kitchen is available in many colors; white, black, cream, green, blue, as well as a wide selection of pastel colors. The only "but" about Aga kitchens is their price; Its craftsmanship and its characteristics make it possible to buy traditional Aga cuisine from only 7000 euros, real luxury!
But today Aga is much more than just a kitchen company. He diversified and their catalog also includes range hoods to match kitchens. , a wide selection of modern and traditional fireplaces, a wide range of refrigerators and excellent kitchen utensils such as pots, pans, oven tins and oven mitts that will make cooking much more comfortable and easy.
the first change in the image of the stove in 87 years.
The English company Aga has been manufacturing cast iron cookers since 1922. For 86 years, traditional design has been adhered to here. And only this year, for the first time in the history of the brand, they decided to change the image of one stove!
Aga cookers have a history of 87 years. The first was invented in 1922 by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Nils Gustaf Dalén.

Since 1922, the plant has been producing the model in its original form: firstly, it is an unchanged traditional design, and secondly, each stove is still hand-cast from cast iron.
The popularity of Aga stoves is evidenced by the fact that such models are installed in the palace and country residence of the Queen of England. The secret of success lies in the special way food is processed: unlike traditional kitchen equipment, these ovens use indirect heat radiation, so that the food does not lose moisture and retains its natural taste and aroma.

In 2009, for the first time in the history of Aga cookers, a model with a more modern design was released. We are talking about the Mastershef stove. The novelty is equipped with five universal gas or glass-ceramic burners (one of them is suitable for a wok), two ventilated electric ovens, a high-speed ceramic grill and an electric oven for simmering.
