At the end of October 2016, Johnny Depp was having lunch in the picturesque backyard of the house of Ed White, his new business manager.
It was in Bel Air. They were accompanied by two forensic accountants plus a guest from Washington, DC, Adam Waldman, a lawyer whose clients include Angelina Jolie and Cher. A whole team of waiters served everyone, French wines from White's cellars and dishes cooked to order. The actor did not hide: he was crushed. After all, he gets paid twenty million dollars a film. How could he be so stranded that his former business manager, Joel Mandel, said he would have to sell major assets, such as a castle on the French Riviera? Depp, decked out like a pirate—studded leather jacket, scarves, bracelets, rings—told Waldman, “I'm not a lawyer. I am not an accountant.
