Home Depot (HD) and Lowe's (LOW) traded lower in early trading on Friday after Loop Capital downgraded the ratings of both companies, citing "significant" supply chain risks, TheStreet notes. for retailers selling home appliances.
Loop Capital analyst Laura Champine downgraded Home Depot stock to Hold and cut its target price by $45 to $325/share. Lowe's was also downgraded to "Hold" with a target price of $220/share.
"Supply chain issues pose a significant risk ... we could see persistent inflation push the Fed to raise rates over our 12-month time horizon," Champin wrote. "The situation as a whole seems more risky compared to what it was even three months ago."
Home Depot itself noted "significant industry disruptions to supply chains" when it posted higher-than-expected second-quarter earnings on August 17, as well as its highest-ever revenue.
"Scarcity of raw materials, production restrictions and pressure on various modes of transportation create a difficult situation in the supply chain," then COO Ted Decker told investors.
The company's like-for-like sales in the latest quarter rose 4.5% year-over-year, just slightly above Refinitiv's forecast of 4.25%, according to Home Depot. At the same time, same-store sales in the US rose by 3.4%, which was well below analysts' forecasts. However, the average check amount rose by 11.3% to $82.48 per purchase, which helped to increase the company's overall revenue even as the flow of customers in its US stores slowed.
Lowe's also beat Wall Street's second-quarter earnings, but followed its bigger competitor with disappointing same-store sales at its US outlets. Lowe's also said it expects $92 billion in revenue in the second half of the year, slightly above Refinitiv's forecast of $91.6 billion. business in the US ahead of the holidays.
Chris Nicholas, a senior financial officer who worked for British retail giant Tesco plc, has replaced Dacona Smith as chief operating officer in the US, Bloomberg News reported, citing a company memo.
This change comes as the world's largest retailer kicks off its holiday sales season amid what may be the most disrupted supply chains in decades, with supply shortages and supply delays expected to hit imports and drive up prices.
Recent data shows that the base price of shipping a standard 40-foot container from Shanghai to New York has risen fivefold from pre-pandemic levels to $15,000, leading to supply shortages for everything from clothes and shoes to furniture and household appliances.
HD is currently quoted at $333.53 (-1.17%) and LOW at $205.59 (-1.11%).
