How to Get Coffee Stains Out of CarpetThe first thing you want to do when you discover the coffee stain is act fast. The worst thing you can do when removing coffee stains from carpet is wait!
- Grab some paper towel and begin to gently blot the stain. If you scrub the coffee stain, this may cause the oils to be absorbed faster, so avoid doing that (despite your inclination to furiously rub the stain, this is not the best approach to removing coffee stains from carpet).
- If you don’t have paper towels handy, you can also use a dish towel. The key is to gently try and absorb as much of the color-carrying liquid as possible, before the coffee stain sets in.
- Flush the area of the carpet with no more than 1 cup of cool water. With another clean dish towel or paper towel, continue blotting the area, after applying cold water to the stain.
- Next, mix two cups of lukewarm water with ¼ cup of lemon juice. Add a bit of liquid dishwashing detergent to the mix as well. When you’re wondering how to get coffee stains out of carpet, there’s nothing a little lemon juice can’t do (in a pinch, you can also use one-third cup white distilled vinegar to two-thirds cup water).
- Apply the solution to a clean sponge. Don’t soak the sponge, but get it damp enough to have an effect when applied to the stain.
- Begin at the outside of the coffee stain and gently rub in a circular motion, working your way to the inside of the stain.
- Rinse the area with clean, cold water.
- Using a clean, dry towel, remove any excess moisture by stepping directly onto the towel and firmly pressing. If the coffee stain still remains, repeat the process listed above until the stain is no longer visible.

5 Easy Methods to Remove Coffee Stains From Furniture
For many of us, coffee is a daily necessity in life. And while the occasional coffee spill is inevitable, stains don’t have to be. The good news is that coffee stains are relatively easy to remove, with one caveat: you have to act fast. Before you furiously scrub a coffee stain with a wet washcloth though, beware of which cleaning methods work, and which do more harm than good. (Scrubbing = more harm, no good.)
Don’t let a little spill ruin your day or your furniture. Instead, follow along with the foolproof methods we’ve broken down for you below. You can think of removing a coffee stain as a trial-and-error process; always start with the easiest solution before moving on to the next method.
Here to rescue our furniture from clumsy coffee spills is Alicia Sokolowski, founder of AspenClean, an eco-conscious cleaning products company and house cleaning service. With the help of Sokolowski, we’ve detailed step-by-step how to remove a coffee stain from your furniture, whether it’s fresh or dried, on fabric or wood.

“Fresh coffee stains need to be removed ASAP,” Sokolowski says. “The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to remove the stain.”
- Blot the stain gently using a clean microfiber cloth, concentrating towards the center of the stain. Do not scrub. Blot as much of the stain as possible before moving to the next step.
- Flush with a cup of cold water. Blot the water gently.
- Repeat until all coffee of the stain has been lifted. Air-dry it with a fan or dryer set at low temperature. Do not apply heat, including lamps, as heat will set the stain.
This one’s easy: simply wipe the spill with a microfiber cloth.
The longer a coffee stain has to set in, the more difficult it will be to remove. It’s not a lost cause though—far from it. There are three methods to removing a dried coffee stain from fabric furniture, so start with the first (and easiest) before moving on to the other methods.
- Make a cleaning mixture with warm water, laundry detergent, and vinegar, using a few drops of detergent, 1/3 cup vinegar, and 2/3 cup of warm water.
- Dip a clean cloth in the mixture and rub it into the stain. Wait a few minutes, then flush it with cold water, making sure to remove all the soapy solution from the upholstery. Blot with a dry clean cloth. Air dry completely away from direct heat.
- If the soapy water doesn't quite do it, sprinkle some baking soda onto the stain. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum up the baking soda.
- If, after using baking soda, the stain still hasn't completely disappeared, use an oxygen bleach stain remover. Mix a tablespoon of oxygen bleach with 2 tablespoons of hot water and rub the stain with the mixture. Before trying this method, test the stain remover on a small, inconspicuous area.

“While these seem like stubborn stains, they’re actually easily managed,” Sokolowski says. For dried coffee ring stains on tables, kitchen counters, or even on coasters, choose one of these two cleaning options.
- Wipe down the surface with a mixture of warm water and baking soda.
- Alternatively, simply spray on some all-purpose cleaner on the stain and wipe down with a microfiber cloth.
“All stains that include tannins—like coffee, tea, red wine—are even more difficult to remove if they are mixed with other substances, like cream and sugar,” Sokolowski says. For those spills, break out the strong stuff.
- If your coffee stain includes cream or sugar, use a detergent that contains enzymes. (Sokolowski suggests AspenClean’s Unscented Laundry Pods.)
- Either break a pod or mix a teaspoon of detergent with a cup of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the stain, then wait 15 minutes.
- Splash the stain with cold water, and blot with a clean, dry towel.
Thought those dark rings of coffee stains in your beloved mugs were permanent? No way, according to Sokolowski. They’re very easy to remove with this simple method.
- First sprinkle baking soda in the cup, then add enough water to the cup to form a paste.
- Scrub with a sponge for a couple of minutes, then rinse.

In the event that a large amount of coffee has been spilled on the furniture, we recommend having the sofa dry-cleaned at home by professionals!
Andrey Kovrov, specialist of the company How much we all love to sit comfortably in front of the TV on the couch, drinking a cup of our favorite hot coffee. At the same time, completely forgetting about some of the risks associated with our furniture. And very often it happens that during interesting programs, games or conversations, we completely forget about our favorite drink left on the armrest or on the seat itself. Careless movement, and ... the mug is empty, and a dark, huge spot is blurring on our sofa. We jump and in a discouraged, surprised state, we try to quickly figure out how to remove this terrible dark mark, and indeed, where to start? nine0003 Well, if you, sitting on the sofa, literally just accidentally spilled coffee on it, you should not panic much, but you should probably go to the kitchen. Take a clean cloth, moisten it with plain water and drop a few drops of any cleaning agent, such as dishwashing liquid. The main thing at the same time is that the rag is damp, but squeezed out enough, and water does not flow from it. Now you need to wipe the wet spot on your sofa with this rag as thoroughly as you can. The entire surface of the stain should be in the resulting foam. Then take a clean, damp cloth and wipe off the foam. The stain should disappear, but it also happens that a small trace still remains. Don't be discouraged, it can still be quite fixable, you just need to put in a little more effort. nine0003 It also happens that when you are late for work, you or your child accidentally spills coffee on the sofa, but you simply do not have time to take on the removal of the resulting stain and you can start this only after a few hours. Well, in this case, not everything is lost and the pollution can be removed forever. To do this, we need the most ordinary table vinegar. We dilute it with water in proportions of 50 to 50. Wet a cloth or napkin in the resulting solution and apply it to the stain. It should be completely wet and saturated with our solution, so the rag should not be squeezed hard. We wait about 15 minutes, then we wipe this place with a clean cloth dipped in warm ordinary water. It happens that the pollution does not completely disappear, for this you need to repeat the procedure for another 10 minutes. After that, we also wash everything off and, so that the stain dries faster, you can soak it with a regular towel. We are waiting for drying and look at the result. nine0003 To do this, we first need to wipe the stain with coffee residue with a normal absorbent cloth or towel. Then take another rag, wet it with water, wring it out and wipe off the residue. Basically, for leather sofas, this is quite enough, but it also happens that additional cleaning may be needed.
