How to decorate a glass display cabinet

How to Style a Glass Display Cabinet –

Today we’re sharing how to style a glass display cabinet!

I wish I could count the number of times I’ve moved this cabinet.

Truthfully, it’s been far too many times.

If there was one piece of furniture in our home I would give away immediately, it would be this glass display cabinet.

There’s nothing wrong with the cabinet at all.  My Mom tells me she loves it all the time ?

It’s just that it’s not the right piece for this particular space.

And no matter how many times I restyle it or move it from the breakfast nook back to its original spot then back to the breakfast nook again a few months later, it just never feels right.

Do you have any pieces of furniture like that in your home?

After much consideration, I’ve narrowed it down. We just have too many open storage and display areas in our house.

In fact, if you stand in the right spot, you can see the bookcases in the living room, the bookcases in the office, the hutch in the dining room, and the hutch in the breakfast nook all at the same time.

Beautiful, for sure.

But it can also read busy with lots of collections if we’re not careful in this open concept home.

Since this glass display cabinet is a family piece and not going anywhere anytime soon though, I decided I better get down to some “meantime decorating.”

You know, the kind of decorating you do while you’re waiting for the right piece to come along.

While the color palette in our home is a pretty tight one with mostly whites, creams, French grays, and camels my hope is you’ll be able to find some inspiration to freshen up a few spaces in your home without having to spend a lot of money too.

Here’s a look at how to style a glass display cabinet…

Decide How You Want Your Glass Display Cabinet or Display Case to Function

Glass display pieces are relatively easy to style. But they definitely need a function and purpose.

You can style your glass display cabinet with a collection in mind.

Consider ironstone, vintage silver, transferware, trophies, art, baskets, weathered books, or with fabulous architectural and salvaged finds.

Don’t be afraid to use your glass display cabinet in a more practical way too though.

You can easily display decorating books or magazines, linen storage, craft and sewing supplies, home office supplies, or even school supplies if your kids are doing virtual learning this year.

Keep a Consistent Color Palette

When you style a glass display cabinet, consider the existing color palette you have in your home.

It will visually help to ensure a seamless transition from one space to the next.

Especially, if you have a lot of displays and collections or live in an open concept home.

Vary the Height and Shape of Objects to Help Add Interest

As you’re gathering pieces to style your cabinet, keep in mind you’ll need a variety of objects at different heights and shapes to help add interest.

I chose a simple collection of books, medallions, scales, and ironstone platters to style this glass display cabinet because I didn’t want to it be too fussy.

Beware of Spacing Items Too Close Together

If you’ve ever tried to style a bookcase, shelves, or glass-front cabinets you know there’s a very thin line between collected and cluttered.

Leaving a little bit of breathing room between objects is a good thing.

Add Greenery

Using greenery, flowers and plants is a great way to freshen up any space including on shelves and in bookcases.

While you definitely don’t have to go all out (unless you want to), adding greenery is a natural way to help add life and a quick pop of color to your glass cabinet.

Meantime Decorating…

I have no idea if I’ll keep the glass display cabinet in this nook or not.

Sometimes I think about filling it up with just books. Other times I think about using it for blanket storage.

If we had a wall big enough in the bathrooms, I might try towels and toiletries in there too.

The beauty of decorating is that you have the right to change your mind, any time you want.

And if you’re like me and just haven’t found the right piece yet, consider “meantime decorating” until you find a piece you love.

After all, you never know when you’re going to strike the right balance of perfectly imperfect until you try.

Decorating a Hutch or a Cabinet?

It’s on my bucket list to own a beautiful, rustic pine hutch someday. I’d love to be able to display it seasonally in a dining room with soaring ceilings. But my old house just doesn’t have that kind of space at this point, so I’ve settled on glass front cabinets to keep my decorating skills happy! And as I was browsing through years of pictures, I realized glass front cabinet displays have become the backbone of my home’s decor. Let me show you all the ways you can enjoy them!

Make the Background of Your Glass Front Cabinet Interesting

Before you add anything to your cabinet, think about the back wall. How can you make the backdrop of your display interesting? You can paint it, add a texture like beadboard or rustic wood, or even hang patterned wallpaper, fabric or decorative paper. Depending on what you’re going to display, you can really punch up the wow factor with something fun!

Another idea is to hang a decorative accessory on the back wall of your cupboard. A pretty wreath, frame, or plate can set off your vignette beautifully.

Style Your Cabinet Display With a Color Theme

Decide on a color theme to decorate your cabinet display. Choose seasonal colors, or coordinate with a special party you’re hosting. Starting with a color theme of 3 or 4 colors is often where I start when styling my glass front cabinets.

In our upstairs hallway, we moved a door and built in an old glass front cabinet on the top and a vintage dresser beneath it. Here’s how differently it looks with a Spring color scheme of blues, greens and purples compared to Fall colors of oranges, golds and browns. The glass doors were given a rest, which gave me even more depth to decorate.

When I styled this seasonal switch, I tried to use almost the same types of accessories in the same locations. Notice the similarities?

Display a Favorite Collection in Your Glass Front Cabinet

All those wonderful shelves can happily display one of your vintage collections. Pretty glassware, vintage cameras or typewriters, or some other valued collection you’ve been hunting down for years, corral it all together for impact. My great grandmother’s primitive jelly cupboard is a treasure. Someday I’m going to give it the refresh treatment it deserves. But I love it’s display space up top and the storage down below.

Use a Repeating Shape When Styling the Shelves

Repeating shapes is one of the hidden tricks of good styling. Use many different objects that all share the same shape, but are made of different materials. Your eyes happily jump around from thing to thing and is pleased to see the harmony, without even noticing it.

This display showcases the circle shape on many different vintage finds. Other rounded objects multiply the effect.

To Balance Your Display, Think of an “X”

Styling a big bank of shelves in a large cabinet display can be intimidating. Start with larger anchor pieces and place them in an X; top left, bottom right, bottom left, top right. The middle of the X can be a larger object or objects, too. This will keep your display from getting too “heavy”.

When I style the big canvas of my kitchen glass front cupboards, this design concept comes in handy. Notice the similarities in the diagonals.

Add a Wide Variety of Textures to Your Display

You can decorate your glass front cabinet display a thousand different ways, but it can be fun to bring in a wide variety of textures. I consciously go through a checklist in my mind of all the different surface materials I’m using: glass, wood, metal, woven, painted, foliage. It’s a great way to think of accessories you may have somewhere in your home you hadn’t thought of using.

Create an En Masse Display

At the total opposite end of the spectrum is to create a display with all one thing. Kind of like using a collection, styling with all one item can be both relaxing and exciting at the same time. I love stuffing a whole cabinet with vintage books with their page sides sticking out. Or, have the binding sides out and group them by color. This type of display can be artistic and bring an eclectic flair to your home. Plus…it’s easy!

Decorate with Glass Front Cabinet Displays in Every Room

I’ve found that glass front cabinets are a great way to display a lot of fun accessories without getting your home decor too busy. I love my vintage things, but don’t like my home to feel too busy (or get too dusty!). Exactly why we’ve built in old cupboard display cabinets, designed glass front kitchen doors, and spread refreshed furniture pieces in different rooms. Even bedrooms are great places for glass front cabinets to corral pretty accessories.

Hang a Pretty Wreath or Accent on the Outside of the Cabinet, Too

Think beyond just decorating the inside of the cupboard or cabinet. You can have fun with the outside, too! A wreath can hang beautifully from the latch or knobs, or you can drape garland across the doors for a festive touch.

Create a Vignette on the Top of the Cabinet with Larger Accessories

Last, but definitely not least, the top of a cabinet or hutch is a fun canvas to feature larger items that don’t fit inside. You can either carry through the theme you’ve got going inside the cupboard, or block off the glass fronts if showing the inside would be too busy. At Christmas time, my house gets very busy with decor, so I decided to simply tape some burlap fabric to the inside of these glass doors. The change was a nice rest for my eyes.

As you might have guessed, styling glass front cabinets is one of my favorite decorating “jobs”! Have I convinced you that you need more glass front cabinets in your life? I hope so! They hold so much decorating possibility and can be used in any room of your home. They’re a great way to enjoy all the fun vintage things without getting too cluttery. And if you’re square-feet challenged, like me, they are a big decorating bang for the footprint.

Hutch displays can offer many of these same decor possibilities,  and I can’t wait to see how the rest of my Lifestyle of Love friends decorated their homes. Visit the talented Emily at Le Cultivateur next; she has ahhhmazing vintage-filled displays in her home!

Showcase is the face of the store. First of all, this is what buyers see when they enter. Therefore, each brand, maintaining its prestige at the proper level, is very scrupulous in the matter of window dressing. Large international companies have entire staffs of professional merchandisers who are engaged in window dressing. The so-called window dressers develop an individual concept for each showcase, after analyzing the needs of customers, demand and sales. Storefronts for fashion, bed linen or flowers are completely different, but they all follow the same principles of sales and style. nine0003

Showcase of a clothing store

Proper window dressing is the key to the success of a store's sales, especially for fashion boutiques. The design concept of such showcases should attract customers, not let them pass by.

There are two main approaches to window dressing for clothing stores:

1. Merchandising. An elegant and rather simple solution for a showcase. It features well-designed images on mannequins. Buyers are always attracted by the total look when ready-made sets are shown - clothes, shoes, accessories. And it is possible that this particular set will appeal to the buyer, and he will certainly wish to purchase it. nine0003

It is important that the outfits presented on the mannequins are not only trendy, but also “wearable”. After all, creative designer things are not always appropriate for everyday bows in some provincial town. Therefore, professional merchandisers should take this aspect into account as well.

2. Story design.

Real mastery is the ability to create harmonious scenes in shop windows. These can be scenes from life or real stories with their characteristic characters. Such design expresses emotions by attracting more buyers. nine0003

So, for example, a New Year's shop window is like a fairy tale. A stunning evening dress on a mannequin, a scene from a Christmas movie or a group of mannequins with New Year's decorations - you can fantasize endlessly!

The principle of decoration of sale showcases differs from the design of those that adorn stores for the season. They are brighter, catchy and eye-catching. Bright colors on banners and ribbons with price tags attract attention here. Most often, the sale window indicates the maximum percentage of the discount. nine0003

Let's look at a few more rules for decorating shop windows:

Children's shop window

Children's shop windows are more colorful and often cartoony. Here, plot scenery is more often used, because it is much more interesting for children to look at mannequins in such an impressive fairy-tale setting.

Many well-known brands of children's clothing prefer to decorate their windows in the same style as in adult stores: restrained, strict, elegant. This concept is more focused on parents who enjoy watching their little copies from the side. nine0003

Another approach to children's showcase design is the holiday, the colors and accessories that catch the attention of children.

The choice of the stylistic direction of the showcase mainly depends on the concept of a particular brand. But still there are general rules that you should always follow:

Showcase of a bed linen store

Shops with bed linen and household utensils are primarily designed for the female part of the population. They should have a special atmosphere of home warmth and comfort.

Pastel soft shades are most often used in the design of showcases: powdery, cream, pink, milky, beige, etc. Plot design is welcome, which evokes thoughts of a home bedroom or any other room. Elements such as furniture, textiles, dishes, flower vases, beautiful candlesticks, souvenirs and much more will help with this. The exposition of bed linen is almost always presented right on a luxurious bed. nine0003

Flower shop showcase

Cheerful, bright flower showcases, regardless of the weather and season, should convey a festive mood. But it is equally important to choose the right concept and design style. There are some nuances here:
