There are so many factors to consider when choosing a floor tiles: budget, style, material and durability.  And with tile not being easily changed, it’s important to take all these factors into consideration before you make your choice.

Ever since leasing the new office space, I have been nose deep in renovation details. From paint colors to office furniture, I’ve been researching it all. I am currently working on finding floor tiles for the bathroom and I’m falling in love with almost every tile I come across.  One thing I know for certain, I want farmhouse bathroom floor tile.

How to Choose Farmhouse Bathroom Floor Tiles.

Not only am I going to share the steps I took for choosing the perfect farmhouse bathroom floor tile, but also, I want to share all the gorgeous floor tile options I found along the way. You know, since I couldn’t buy them all for myself.

Affordable farmhouse bathroom floor tiles vs. High- end farmhouse bathroom floor tiles.

My very first order of action was setting a budget. As a whole I have been trying to keep the costs down during this renovation, opting for durable laminate flooring in the main office area and an affordable carpet in the break space. With that being said, the bathroom flooring should be no different.

As you can see in the image, the splurge farmhouse mosaic tile is $42.46 a square foot. Yes, It’s marble and it is stunning however, it is expensive. On the other hand, the save tile is only $8.76 a square foot. This tile is ceramic, which is why the price is significantly lower, but the look is very similar.

Sticking to a budget may seem like a challenging task but, in reality, it’s not. You can find so many gorgeous and affordable farmhouse style floor tiles in any price range.

What’s Your Bathroom Floor Tile Style?

We already know I’m all about the farmhouse style, however there are so many different tile style options to choose from. Modern farmhouse bathroom floor tiles to rustic farmhouse floor tiles, you are guaranteed to find a  bathroom floor tile in the style you love.

Looking for a classic style floor tile that will stand the test of time? A gorgeous black and white floor tile will do the trick.   Prefer more of a modern style? Possibly a sleek, clean lined gray floor tile will be perfect for you.

Mosaic tiles make for an excellent bathroom tile floor option. I find myself drawn to them because of the amount of styles and design options. I also have been loving the more graphic hand painted tiles. Both mosaic tiles and hand painted tiles would work beautifully in small and large bathrooms.

I personally tend to go for tiles that are more classic and timeless (hello white subway tile) for example,  white floor tiles. White is one of the main characteristics of  farmhouse style, in turn making it an ideal option for my farmhouse bathroom floor tiles.

Which Bathroom Floor Tile Material to Use?

Natural Stone Floor Tiles, Ceramic Floor Tiles, Porcelain Floor Tiles…

When thinking about what floor tile material I wanted to use in my bathroom design, I  asked myself the following questions.

Porcelain Floor Tile

This tile is the most durable. Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile, just harder and stronger than other ceramic tiles.

Some of the characteristics of porcelain tile that make it appealing for a high traffic bathroom are, it’s extremely resistant to water, scratches, stains, and cracks. These characteristics provide long-lasting durability, which makes it the perfect bathroom floor tile. Keep in mind though that porcelain is more expensive compared to ceramic tile.

Glazed or Unglazed?

Porcelain tile goes through the same process whether is glazed or unglazed. The only difference is the glazed porcelain tile has a layer of glass on it.

Glazed porcelain tile gives you more aesthetic options, however, it’s a bit less durable than unglazed porcelain. Unglazed porcelain tile has more of a natural look and is more suited for a shower floor or outdoor areas because of its slip resistance.

Ceramic Floor Tile

A highly popular choice in tile is ceramic. Why? High durability, low costs, low maintenance and the abundance of colors, patterns and shapes.

Ceramic tiles also are available in glazed and unglazed.

Glazed ceramic has a coating on the outside making it water resistant and practically maintenance free.

An example of an unglazed ceramic tiles would be terracotta. Terracotta, though it has a rustic charm to it,  is not water resistant, prone to chips and is a soft material making it not an ideal  choice for bathroom floor tile.

Natural Stone Tile

Marble, granite, slate, and travertine are all examples of natural stone tile. It’s undeniable the elegance the look of natural stone gives a bathroom, however they do require more maintenance and are more expensive compared to ceramic and porcelain tile. Natural stone floor tiles would work in a bathroom that is not often used.

Stenciled Tile

Using a stencil to make it look as though you have a tiled floor is a fantastic and budget-friendly DIY. Some great resources for beautiful farmhouse floor tile stencils are Etsy, Amazon, and Cutting Edge Stencils.

Being that this bathroom is in our office and will see a significant amount of use, I decided to go for a durable porcelain tile. Any guesses to what style I choose?

Where to Buy Farmhouse Bathroom Floor Tile?

Finding a place to buy bathroom floor tiles is so easy. There are specific tile stores everywhere. These tile stores are great options for people who like to see and touch the tile in person.

For my online shoppers out there places like  Amazon, Joss & Main,  Wayfair and Overstock also carry a variety of floor tiles for your bathroom.

Lowes, Home Depot and Floor & Decor and three stores where you can both shop online and instore.

Needless to say, I did not have any issues finding a place to buy the perfect farmhouse bathroom floor tile.

Now that I have my farmhouse bathroom floor tile picked out, I can continue with the rest of the bathroom design. Choosing a paint color, a farmhouse vanity or pedestal sink, and all the other fun accessories to add the right amount of farmhouse charm.

Finding the right bathroom floor tile isn’t a hard task. Do some research, use the steps I took and you will be well on your way to finding the perfect bathroom floor tile.

Modern Farmhouse or Cottage Bathroom Tile

We are making progress on the remodeling of our new (old) house! Right now we are working on the kitchen, but the bathrooms are coming up. Since our new home is similar in age as the #1905Cottage I remodeled a few years ago, I want to do something kind of similar with a bit of a modern twist!

1891 Avenues Cottage

1905 Cottage Master Bathroom

I’ve been researching bathroom ideas. Here are a few of my favorite bathroom ideas using different tile patterns!

What Tile Designs are Considered Modern Farmhouse?

Farmhouse tile is typically tile that was used in farmhouses built at the turn of the century. Modern farmhouse uses these traditional materials but with a modern twist. For example a modern farmhouse bathroom would use traditional subway tile but add in modern details. Like laying subway tile in modern patterns or adding trendy cement tiles to accent subway tile.

Andrea West Design

There are so many reasons I love this bathroom. The black and white tile on the floor are so striking. The contrast of the back tile shower floor is nice. And the simplicity of the marble subway tile create an interesting bathroom without being too busy.

Crisp Architects

Another one of my favorites. The window pane shower doors are gorgeous and really showcase the beautiful subway tile with dark grout. The built in cabinet is a wonderful use of space and trough tubs are really popular now.

This is an excellent example of a modern farmhouse bathroom with a bohemian vibe. The traditional farmhouse planking is modernized with the addition of hexagon tiles.

@athomewithkaraallen

This is my friend Kara’s home. The wood planking around her tub give a warm feeling along with the classic white subway tile.

@craven_haven

There are a couple details on this beautiful bathroom that are striking. The diamond-shape subway tile and laying the tile vertically puts a modern twist on the farmhouse theme. Also the dark emerald green color of the cabinet is very on-trend, in addition to the gold cabinet modern handles.

White Cottage Home and Living

For a big statement, consider laying statement tile on your wall like this beautiful bathroom. The wood tones of the cabinet and mirrors add a nice contrast to the black and white square cement tiles.

@michelledirkse

Curbless showers are a huge trend right now. I love the way the tile continues seamlessly into the main part of the bathroom. hw borders along the shower and bathroom are a beautiful tile statement.

Katie Hodges Designs

The stand-alone clawfoot tub is the star of this striking bathroom. Larger octagon tile with white grout are a subtle statement in this room.

@amybartland

Subtle grey patterned tile add interest and complement marble baseboards. The black framed windows echo the window pane shower enclosure.

@beckiowens

A black and white marble checked floor ground this bathroom against walls that have subway tile running all the way to the ceiling. I also love the black fixtures in this gorgeous bathroom.

@amberinteriors

This is the inspiration for my girls’ bathroom in our new home. I love the penny tile patterned floor. The black and white theme is complemented by the black planked wall and built-in cabinet in this small but amazing bathroom design.

Domino

The herringbone patterned wood floor in this room warm the space up and complement the subway tile with dark grout. The gold handles and fixtures really shine in this bathroom.

Lonny

Trough tubs are really trending right now. I love the white rub with the tile in this farmhouse bathroom.

Captivating Houses

Several different grey tile patterns work well together in this room. The grey grout showcases classic subway tile and is a beautiful background against the black cabinet and fixtures.

Domino

Scallop tile os the star of this bathroom. The black tile looks beautiful with the black and gold clawfoot tub for a really sophisticated feeling in this home.

Better Homes and Gardens

One of my favorite bathrooms because of the warm wood tones in the floors and vanity. The stone sink and brick accents make this space seem really warm and welcoming. This bathroom technically doesn’t have tile, but I included it because of the use of brick instead of tile.

Domino

Another beautiful of striking floor tile. This is a wonderful idea for a small bathroom. Instead of installing a big sink cabinet, the wall-mounted sink takes up far less space in a small bathroom. The ledge built into the back of the sink has ingenious shelves built into it for storage.

Domino

Subway tile are laid in straight lines for an updated look. I also love the round tub.

Sunny Circles Studio

This herringbone pattern is a fun way of updating a bathroom but still maintaining a classic look. The black and white tile on the floor is also classic and timeless.

Domino

Using grey and white tile on the floor softens the overall look of this gorgeous bathroom. The black accents are statements in the tub and wall at the end of the room.

Bathroom floor in a wooden house

Home / Bathroom floor

Published:

Repairing a bathroom in a wooden house can make even experienced professionals sweat a lot. After all, wood, due to its characteristics, extremely negatively tolerates high humidity. And if the dwelling is completely made of wood, then with a high degree of probability the floors will also be lined with this material. In this case, the device usually involves the use of wooden beams. nine0003

In a humid climate without good waterproofing, they will rot and dry out, causing the floor to sag more and more over time. In such conditions, even the most resistant flooring will lose its attractive appearance. At the same time, the repair will not be limited to cosmetic corrections - the work on laying the floors will have to be carried out again.

That is why it is extremely important at the planning stage to determine the scope of work for waterproofing a bathroom in a wooden house, the type of flooring that will be used, and also to find out all the nuances of the repair. nine0003

Contents

  1. How to make the bathroom floor as waterproof as possible
  2. Floor screed in the room
  3. Which materials are suitable for finishing the bathroom floor

How to make the bathroom floor as waterproof as possible

The primary task at the first stage of renovation is to ensure complete waterproofing of the bathroom. In a wooden house, this is a very important issue, because moisture will significantly accelerate the wear of all supporting structures. And this applies not only to the floor, but also to walls and ceilings. nine0003

The first stage here is a thorough cleaning of the premises. Dust, dirt, small particles and other debris can interfere with the correct waterproofing process. Therefore, the bathroom should be as clean as the situation allows.

Cleanliness is also important for the next step, which is the priming process. For these purposes, a liquid composition or mixture is used, which must be dissolved in water in a ratio of 1: 1. Carrying out this procedure additionally degreases the surface, increasing the setting properties of waterproofing solutions. And this is a guarantee of the durability of the repair. nine0003

And the last step is to directly apply the moisture resistant coating. Waterproofing in this case can be carried out by various methods, among which:

The most common of them, and also the simplest one, is coating waterproofing. To carry out work in the bathroom, you only need the mixture itself (usually a mastic or a special solution) and a roller. Two layers are applied to them sequentially, with a break of 5-7 hours. This is enough for the floor to be sufficiently isolated from the effects of water. nine0003

Paint waterproofing in the bathroom is not a very rational solution. The fact is that the bitumen-polymer mastic used for applying to the floor will lose moisture resistance after 2-3 years. And this is not the longest period, because in a wooden house protection from moisture is constantly needed.

Special tools will be required for the waterproofing adhesive, as the method involves the use of bitumen-polymer materials for flooring.

nine0002 The process will require the participation of high temperatures. Doing such waterproofing with your own hands is unlikely to succeed without relevant experience.

In any case, even after applying the base waterproofing layer, it is recommended to additionally cover the floor with rubberized material - this will provide greater moisture resistance.

Indoor floor screed

As mentioned earlier, in a wooden house, the bathroom floor arrangement involves massive wooden beams as a supporting structure. If the room is located on the lower floor, then you can easily replace them with more durable steel floors. In this case, the use of a cement screed is justified. It, in turn, will allow the use of ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware as flooring. These materials cannot be mounted on a wooden surface, since the mixtures for their fastening are not designed for this and can only come into contact with concrete or drywall. nine0003

If the bathroom is located on the upper floors, then replacing the beams and even more so making a cement screed is extremely risky. This significantly increases the load on the floors, which may, as a result, not withstand and collapse - and it’s good if the floor fails when there is no one in the house.

You need to be extremely careful about safety measures when laying the floor in the bathroom. When using a screed in a wooden house, it is desirable in any case to reduce the distance between the ceilings. Such a device will increase the level of maximum load that the beams can withstand. You also need to take care of increasing their cross section. Also, do not forget that the level of overlap must be made 8-10 cm lower than in the rest of the house. Otherwise, there is simply not enough height under the subfloor. nine0003

Unfortunately, there is no lighter alternative to cement screed. If safety standards prohibit creating an additional load on the floor in the bathroom, then there is a fairly wide range of materials that can be used for decoration.

Bathroom floors require careful preparation before finishing. What is important to remember, read in our publication.

How to optimally and ergonomically plan a bathroom, you can read in this article. nine0003

What materials are suitable for finishing the bathroom floor

Even at the stage of planning the floor of a bathroom in a wooden house, it is necessary to take care of the issue of choosing the type of flooring. In stores today, you can choose materials for every taste and wallet size. Both inexpensive solutions are available for those who seek to save money, as well as expensive ones, they are also the most durable. The choice is up to the buyer.

Meanwhile, the most popular types of flooring include:

The most common solution is ceramic or porcelain stoneware. This material resists moisture well, its service life can be 8 years or more, and the strength is much higher than that of analogues. However, its installation necessarily requires a cement screed, which increases the load on the floor, which in a wooden house is a separate problem and will require at least a change in the arrangement of floors. Therefore, such coverage is not suitable for everyone. nine0003

Wood is the second most popular bathroom flooring material. In addition, it is completely environmentally friendly. This will undoubtedly be relevant for the owners of a wooden house. And even though wood is not naturally water friendly, modern water-repellent coatings can achieve a stunning effect. Thanks to it, the boards will acquire sufficient waterproofing properties to last indoors for many years and not deteriorate. Of course, this material is inferior in terms of durability to ceramics and wood needs to be further processed, which requires additional effort and costs. However, it serves as an excellent, and most importantly, affordable alternative. nine0003

If there is no time to impregnate wooden boards, then a moisture-resistant laminate would be an interesting option. In a wooden house, it would be quite reasonable to use materials similar in structure. Laminate, thanks to the abundance of patterns imitating the structure of wood or parquet patterns, will organically fit into the interior of any room, including the bathroom. However, if installed incorrectly, moisture can get into the gaps between the slabs, causing the material to swell and the entire floor will need to be updated.

nine0050

To save big, you can simply lay linoleum in the room. This material tolerates moisture well, is easy to install and, thanks to a wide range of colors, can be matched exactly to the design of the room.

However, as with laminate, careful sealing will be required. Leaking through the seams, water begins to accumulate under the linoleum and lead to its deterioration. This is especially true for those types that are made with a layer of insulation. It will cause the onset of rotting processes, the consequences of which will be an unpleasant smell and “floated” linoleum. nine0003

The device of a wooden house suggests a responsible attitude to the decoration of the bathroom. Floor coverings must be chosen carefully and soberly assessing the condition of the room. If the bathroom is located on the second floor and above, then it is better to invite a specialist who will evaluate the possibility of using a cement screed, reinforced floors and heavy finishing materials. High-quality waterproofing is also required so that repair efforts are not in vain.

Modern wooden houses are very popular among connoisseurs of natural materials. Today's wooden structures are equipped with comfortable bathrooms, toilets, and heated floors. In such houses, laying the floor is more difficult than in structures made of other materials. However, if all the stages of arranging the floor are correctly observed, then it will not deteriorate under the influence of a humid environment, and will serve for a long time. nine0003

The bathroom floor can be made from different materials to meet the needs of the owners of the house

Any material can be used for laying the flooring, in various color variations. The bathroom with wooden floor looks especially good. Instead of wood, a laminate is used that imitates a wood pattern. You can also use the most democratic of all options - linoleum.

Bathroom flooring must meet certain requirements. It should be moisture resistant in case a lot of water spills on it. Thus, moisture will not enter the lower floor. When laying a laminate board or a plastic floor, you need to make sure that water does not pass between the floors and into the structure itself. nine0003

It is advisable to plan the finishing of bathrooms even at the stage of building a house, then you can correctly calculate and lay wooden floors. In new homes, it is worth using chipboard and plasterboard flooring. The flooring must be durable and withstand heavy loads from plumbing that will affect it.

When arranging a new floor after a rough finish in a new house, it is advisable to cover a little lower than in other rooms. This is necessary so that water does not flow into other rooms in case of flooding. It is better to make the floor at an angle to drain water into the sewer. As a rule, the floors consist of flooring in the form of boards, concrete screed and topcoat. nine0003

Features of the choice of flooring for the bathroom in a wooden house

Content

The modern market provides a huge selection of finishing materials, which makes it possible to equip the floor in the bathroom in any way. This room has a high level of humidity, according to this, you need to choose materials for the floor. When choosing a floor covering, you need to consider what properties a particular coating has, as well as the features of its installation.

The bathroom is that room in the house, the repair of which is not worth saving much

For a bathroom, it is better to install a floor with a minimum number of joints. This is necessary to reduce the risk of swelling of the material, as well as to avoid the development of pathogenic microorganisms (fungus, mold).

Ceramic tiles are ideal for this flooring.

The color should match the rest of the finish. If the walls are made in blue, then it is better to make the floor dark blue.

You can also choose contrasting solutions - blue rubber floor and white tiles on the walls

What modern materials can be put on wood in a bathroom

There are many types of floor finishing materials that allow you to successfully decorate the floor coating. It is selected based on such parameters as pricing policy, anti-slip properties, moisture resistance. With all these points in mind, you can choose the most suitable option for arranging the floor. nine0003

Wooden floor

This material is used less and less in flooring, but it is one of the best. Wood is an environmentally friendly material, therefore it does not harm human health. Many do not dare to make such a choice, since wood is not cheap and is afraid of moisture. However, few people know that with the choice of high-quality material and proper processing, such flooring will last a long time.

The wooden surface looks original and creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere

Larch is a good choice as it is moisture resistant. In addition, the plank floor is durable and has a beautiful aesthetic appearance. Teak is a moisture-resistant type of wood, since it is it that is used for the construction of ships. The composition of such wood contains oil, which repels moisture, preventing it from penetrating into the material.

Teak is the most suitable wood for flooring in wet rooms

Larch is the choice of those who are not ready to spend money on expensive teak flooring

A good option would be to use oak, elm or ash for flooring

Ceramic tiles

Considered the most common type of flooring in the bathroom. It has high moisture-resistant characteristics, provides reliable sealing, preventing water from penetrating to the lower floor. It is also resistant to chemical and mechanical damage. It is better to choose a ribbed surface option, as this will provide safety and stability in large amounts of water. nine0003

Ceramic tiles are resistant to mechanical stress, do not absorb or pass water

Ceramic coating is easy to clean and does not cause problems during operation

The tile allows coating in any color palette. Popular colors are blue and brown. When choosing a material, give preference to porcelain stoneware, because it is stronger and more resistant to mechanical stress. Since such a floor will be cold, it makes sense to equip it with a floor heating system. nine0003

Linoleum

It is considered a reliable material, while its price is quite affordable. This material does not require special care. Linoleum is easily laid on the finished base, even without the involvement of specialists. For the bathroom, it is better to give preference to a material that is resistant to moisture and a corrugated coating. With such a floor, water must be avoided in the layers, otherwise fungus may develop there. For high-quality sealing of a part of the linoleum flooring, it is necessary to glue and process the joints with a sealant. Under it you need to put chipboard. nine0003

Laying linoleum on the bathroom floor is worth it only with a limited budget

Linoleum can be plain, with a pattern or with an imitation of a natural coating - wood, ceramics or stone

Laminate

Despite its high sensitivity to moisture, laminate is actively used for floor coverings in the bathroom. To extend the service life, it is better to choose a moisture-resistant type of this material and keep it dry. It will be enough to wipe from the water with a dry cloth. In this room, the laminate will look very impressive, besides, it is easy to install. For these purposes, choose black, brown or white elements. To make the floor even, it is necessary to put chipboard or plywood on the base. nine0003

Laminate is a floor covering that imitates wood. Expensive varieties of laminate have an attractive appearance and good durability

Only moisture-resistant laminate with high wear resistance is suitable for bathroom flooring

Special adhesive plug, varnished

Cork floor has a pleasant tactile quality. It is very easy to care for, as it is easily cleaned by any means. Do not use harsh abrasive materials. nine0003

Cork flooring is environmentally friendly and absolutely safe to use

Cork can be laid in any room, especially since modern cork flooring is moisture resistant, therefore it is even suitable for the bathroom. To date, there are two types of cork flooring: adhesive and castle. The glue plug is varnished in several layers. This serves as protection for the floor from various damages, including from water.

Glue plug can be laid directly on a flat concrete base or on a plywood substrate

The lock is coated with a thin layer of varnish, therefore it does not guarantee protection against various mechanical influences. This type of surface is easy to install. The plates are connected on the floor according to the lock principle. This technology has a significant disadvantage - water gets into the joints, which leads to the rapid destruction of the material. Such seams must be treated with sealants that will not let moisture into the cork layers. It is worth remembering that if one plate is damaged, the entire surface will have to be disassembled. nine0003

Interlocking cork panels are not attached directly to the floor, but simply laid like a laminate.

Adhesive type of floor is suitable for installation in the bathroom, kitchen, hallway - wherever there is high humidity and other pollution. Such plates are easily removed, so replacing a damaged element will not be difficult at all.

Cork keeps the heat in the bathroom very well, eliminating the need for underfloor heating

All flooring comes at a different price point, with cork being the most expensive. In addition to the price, the cork has the following disadvantages:

Cork has a high slip resistance - even if the floor becomes wet, it will not be slippery

Is it possible to make a warm floor in the bathroom of a wooden house

Underfloor heating can be installed in wooden houses, and this is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. It is important to plan everything in advance and correctly complete all stages of laying the structure.

When the house is under construction, it is better to use metal beams instead of wood. The floor is then filled with concrete. With this design, you can lay any material for flooring. This design is suitable only for the bathroom located on the 1st floor. nine0003

Reinforcing the floor under the screed with metal mesh

Pouring a concrete base with a thickness of 4-5 cm

This construction is not suitable for the second floor. Here you need to equip a flat and solid foundation. The screed must be arranged throughout the floor. Due to its large weight, it is necessary to calculate the load on the beams. If the mixture is not properly distributed, then the whole structure may fail.

If ceramic tiles are used as flooring, the spacing between the beam elements must be respected. It is also worth lowering the overlap level by 10 cm.

In order to install a warm floor, do the following:
