In 2018, my wife and I bought an apartment in St. Petersburg. They searched for a kitchen in it for a whole month: they looked at the First Furniture Factory, Maria, and dozens of small manufacturers. The wife explained to the consultants what cabinets and doors she needed - they are called modules and facades. And I looked at the quality and price. But we didn't find anything suitable.

My profession is not furniture assembly, I'm in marketing. But in stores, it seemed to me that the kitchens were arranged quite simply, and I decided to make my own. I drew a project, chose materials and ordered a cut. Then I bought a countertop, accessories, tools - and assembled the kitchen on my own.

I’ll tell you how much time and money I spent, and also what I could save on, but didn’t.

I made this kitchen myself

Why I decided to make the kitchen myself

In each salon, we drew a project on a computer to fit the room. We needed a corner kitchen with a total length of 430 cm: on one wall - 186 cm, on the other - 244 cm. Manufacturers made modules of standard width: 30, 35, 40 cm, and so on with a step of 5 cm. It was easy to assemble a kitchen from them desired length.

However, we did not like the height of the kitchens. We wanted our kitchen to be up to the ceiling. So it would look harmonious, and rubbish would not accumulate under the ceiling. All manufacturers offered us such options that left either 34 or 54 cm of free space under the ceiling.

We also wanted to make two rows of upper cabinets. The first one is of standard height, 72 cm, and the second above it is non-standard, 54 cm. But the manufacturers did not do such things or they increased the price.

As a result, we liked one kitchen project from Maria. That kitchen cost 420,000 R - this is with assembly, but without appliances, a sink and a faucet.

I wanted to buy this kitchen, but I realized that, in fact, the materials for it cost much less than 400,000. In addition, in the previous apartment, I assembled cabinets and knew that there was nothing complicated in the design of furniture. And I just didn’t want to overpay for the brand.

On furniture forums, I found photos of kitchens that people made themselves from scratch. I read that many companies make custom boards for cabinets and facades. And they even glue the cut edge - a decorative tape - in place. And the prices there are quite reasonable.

I decided to assemble the kitchen myself. Even savings went by the wayside, it was so interesting what would happen in the end. My wife and child were going to go to the sea for two months. During this time, I promised her to make a kitchen. Next, I will tell you about all the stages of work.

This kitchen project for 420,000 R was drawn for us in Maria. The tabletop was made of quartz agglomerate, and the facades were made of MDF with enamel.

How I designed the kitchen

There were no cabinet sizes in Maria's kitchen project. I calculated them myself and made a new project. To do this, I found out the standard sizes and downloaded the design program.

Standard module sizes. I read on the Internet that the width of the modules is made to your taste in increments of 5 cm. Only a built-in dishwasher needs a cabinet with a 45 cm or 60 cm opening. And for an oven - with a 60 cm opening. The appliances themselves are 4 mm narrower, but for embedding, you need a margin of 2 mm on the left and right.

How we made the design project of the apartment ourselves

The lower modules are made 72 cm high, then it is comfortable for a person of average height to work in the kitchen. And I made the height for the upper cabinets the same as I planned: for the first row, the standard is 72 cm, for the second, 54 cm.

The bottom modules are made 46-52 cm deep. This way, there is a reserve for pipes at the back wall, and the tabletop protrudes forward and protects the doors. The depth of the upper modules is usually 30-35 cm. I don’t like deep cabinets: rubbish always accumulates near the back wall. Therefore, I chose the lower ones with a depth of 46 cm, and the upper ones - 30 cm.

Design program. There are many furniture designers on the Internet: Kitchendraw, Pro100, Woody. I downloaded the free demo version of Pro100. In the paid one, it was possible to export data from the project to Excel and order materials with a ready-made table. It's convenient, but the paid version cost 90 000 R. I preferred to design in free and transfer the dimensions to Excel manually. I checked them three times.

I designed every day for two hours after work. Spent 10 days in total. The program was simple, I could do without it. I worked in it for a total of no more than four hours. The rest of the time I studied the forums. There was a lot of unnecessary correspondence, and to find the right one, I scrolled through more than one topic.

The longest I was looking for was how to indent between the modules in the corner where the two sides of the kitchen meet. Without indentation, the doors there could hit each other when opened. As a result, I didn’t find it, but estimated by eye and retreated 5 cm. It turned out very well.

This is what happened at the intermediate stage. Later, I removed two cabinets: above the refrigerator and high to the right of it. My wife wanted to build an oven and a microwave into it, but the cabinet turned out to be too bulky. On the draft line, closer to the drawing, they showed the dimensions of the modules. I didn't pay attention to the rest. In general, the program did not help me: I could draw the same thing on paper. How I ordered materials for the frame

Frame are cabinets with shelves without doors. They are made from chipboard. On the ends where the saw was cut, a plastic edge is glued. And at the back, a HDF wall is nailed to the closet to cover the wallpaper.

I googled chipboard cutting companies and sent them the dimensions and number of boards. Almost everyone answered, but most did not have their own material. I had to buy and bring sheets of laminated chipboard and HDF of 4 m², and they would cut the boards of the right size. I cut off such options.

Business: making furniture out of old airplanes

I found a company where they brought everything for free, because the store with materials was in the same building. The company manager himself calculated that I needed four sheets of chipboard 16 mm thick, two sheets of HDF and 150 m of edges. He also advised taking moisture-resistant materials from Egger. They cost 13,434 R. I paid for them online and sent a check to the sawing company. I paid another 9074 rubles for sawing and edging.

It was possible to order additives - holes for fasteners for door hinges. But cutting each one cost 120 R. Plus, I would have to calculate the distances between the holes myself and make drawings for cutting. I decided to make additives myself and saved 6000 R.

How I chose the fronts

While the boards for the frame were being made, I read on the forums about the fronts, they are also doors. There are a lot of types of facades, but I considered four: with film, with plastic coating, from solid wood and from MDF with enamel. That's what I understood.

Facades with foil are made of chipboard - this is a board made of wood chips. The chips are mixed with a sticky mass and pressed under high pressure at high temperature.

Colored or wood effect film coating. Facades with it are the cheapest, but they look simple and are afraid of moisture, and the film peels off over time. I didn't take these.

How much repairs cost: 5 examples - from quick and budget to endless But they need to be washed frequently: fingerprints and streaks are very noticeable on shiny plastic, especially in the sun. Therefore, I also refused them.

Solid wood facades are the most beautiful, but impractical. They are made of natural wood, and it is afraid of moisture. In addition, such facades are the most expensive. I asked on the forum which array to buy within 6000 R per 1 m². They answered that it was only domestic, and everyone scolded him. Maybe it's just a habit to scold everything Russian, but I didn't check it and threw that option away.

Enamel fronts are made from MDF. This is a board made of finer sawdust than chipboard. They are fastened with paraffin: it is environmentally friendly, dense and not so afraid of moisture. The plate is primed, and then covered with several layers of enamel - a special paint. Such facades are a little cheaper than those from the array. But they look good, are easy to clean, do not fade and serve for a long time. I chose them.

How I ordered facades

On the Internet I found many companies that made custom facades. But mostly they were intermediaries, and I was looking for a manufacturer so as not to overpay. I expected to find a large plant, but Googled a small production with a couple of people on staff.

In the office I was given a price list and offered to choose the color and shape of the facade. I quickly decided on the color, but I didn’t like the shape. Then I drew a facade on paper, and the master sketched a drawing for the CNC machine with me.

I ordered boards for the frame without additives - holes where fasteners are screwed. I made them myself. And with the facades, I decided not to risk it. Additives cost 150 R, and for 50 pieces I gave 7500 R.

I needed 38 facades with a total area of 8.2 m². They cost 45,790 R, an average of 1,205 R per facade. I signed a contract and left an advance payment - 30,000 rubles.

They promised to make the facades in 10 days, but they did it only in 17 days. But as an apology, they delivered it for free, and I didn’t have to shove them around the car.

How I bought fittings

Fittings are handles, hinges for doors, systems for pulling drawers and other little things. I bought everything at GTV-Meridian and Leroy Merlin.

My wife chose expensive pens , 448 R. But I didn’t argue: I hoped that borscht in the kitchen would be tastier with them. For 36 pens I paid 16,128 R.

Handles for my kitchen

Hinges bought the ones recommended by a consultant in a hardware store. I don't remember the name, but they were with closers. Closers slow down the closing of the door or drawer. You can take a plate from the shelf and let go of the door without fear of a crash. Each hinge cost 175 R, and 46 pieces cost 8050 R.

Drawer systems I chose the longest. I looked at different manufacturers in repair shops: from the popular Austrian "Bloom" to Chinese nonames. On furniture forums, everyone advised "Bloom" - I took it. I compared prices on the Internet and found where the systems are cheaper. For ten pieces, including the bottle holder, I gave 40 097 R. Not cheap, but I was sure of the quality.

Bloom drawer systems

Fasteners, hanging rails, furniture ties and legs I took the first ones that came across in Leroy Merlin. Ties are needed to connect boards into cabinets, and tires and awnings are needed to hang these cabinets on the wall. All the little things cost 25,211 R.

How I bought the countertop

I chose from five types of countertops: natural stone, solid wood, acrylic, chipboard and quartz agglomerate. There were also glass and metal ones, but I considered them exotic.

I read on the forums that stone countertops are practical and beautiful, but the most expensive. From the array - impractical: if water gets on a bare tree where the varnish is scratched, it will swell overnight. Acrylic countertops scratch easily and should not be placed hot. I immediately dismissed all these options.

The cheapest countertops are made of chipboard covered with plastic. They are afraid of water, but only if it gets under the plastic. If not scratched, the countertop will last at least eight years. And then it is easy to change it: buy and saw the panel in the store and install it yourself. I wanted to take such a tabletop. From a good manufacturer, this would cost 10,000 R.

But my wife asked for a quartz countertop. Only natural stone was more expensive, but I think quartz is not inferior to it in quality. I could order a countertop from the manufacturer and install it myself. Then I would have to saw quartz, lay the slab on lockers alone and level it. And she weighed 60 kg. I decided to order all the work in the store where I bought the countertop. It cost 63,000 rubles with the work.

A week after the measurement, the master brought the countertop and began to install it. The opening under the sink turned out to be larger than necessary, and a piece of the stove was damaged. The master said that 20,000 R would be deducted from his salary for this, and I had to wait another week.

What tools were needed for assembly

I already had a screwdriver. With it, it is quick and easy to tighten the ties. You can do without it and use ordinary screwdrivers. But then the calluses are provided, and the assembly will take more time.

Forstner drill is needed to make additives for the hinges on the doors. A loop is inserted into these round recesses to be screwed later. A drill with a diameter of 35 mm cost 280 R.

Furniture jigs are templates for holes for hinges, handles and fasteners. Without them, you yourself will have to figure out where to make each hole, and this is a long time, and besides, you can make a mistake. A template for hinges cost 300 R, for ties - 800 R, for handles - 450 R.

How I assembled the kitchen

I assembled the kitchen for two days off. First, I made a frame and hung the upper modules, then installed the equipment and attached the facades. The master installed the countertop for me, but I fixed the sink and hob myself.

Assembling the kitchen was easy. The hardest part was installing the drawers. The gap between them was only 2 mm, and everything had to be done evenly. The designer "Bloom" helped me, with him I accurately marked the holes and guides for the boxes. It is not suitable for systems from other manufacturers. Perhaps they have their own programs.

I also hung the facades quickly, because they already had additives on them. I just screwed the hinges, and at the end - the handles.

How I could save money

I chose expensive materials for the kitchen. And here's what I could save on without losing quality.

would be worth my no-frills kitchen

Countertop. For a chipboard top with plastic, I would pay 10,000 R, and not 63,000 R, as for a quartz agglomerate.

The second row of upper modules cost 22,000 R. But you could do without it.

Drawers could have been made smaller. With the bottle I got ten pieces, but instead of some I could put ordinary cabinets. And instead of a narrow drawer under the oven - a blank panel.

I bought Bloom retractable systems, and the same Ikea sells analogues at 30% cheaper. The reviews for them are good. By taking them, I would save about 10,000 R.

Door hinge closers are optional. I could save 1,500 rubles on them.

I took moisture-resistant chipboard for the frame out of caution: suddenly something would spill inside the boxes. But I realized that I need to try very hard to make it happen. It was possible to buy an ordinary chipboard and save 2500 R.

The 1 mm thick edge looks beautiful. But at the cut, they told me that 0.4 mm is no worse. But it would cost 2000 R cheaper.

Furniture jigs are simply wooden templates. You can make them yourself, and not spend 1550 R.
