Wood flooring ideas have formed a beautiful foundation in homes across the world for centuries. The timeless elegance and charm of working with natural materials in interior design remains ever popular, with timber offering a durable and long-lasting design for flooring ideas.
Now more than ever, wood flooring ideas have come to the fore, with modern technologies enabling a plethora of patterns, textures and designs that weren't readily available before. From luxury vinyl wood flooring to engineered wood floor designs that can be used with underfloor heating, there are options to integrate into homes of all styles that elegantly combine the past and the present.
Wood kitchen flooring is one of the most popular options for the home, with designers looking for a combination of durability and beauty for this busy, hardworking space. Heritage styles such as herringbone, basket weave and parquet have also seen a huge revival in popularity, adding inviting, rustic texture and appealing intricate patterns to hallways and living rooms alike.
Wood flooring ideas – 15 colors and styles for every room in your home
You can achieve many different looks with wood flooring, with an array contrasting colors, tones and finishes available. From the palest pine or Douglas Fir to darker tones of oak or walnut, and honey hues in between, there are plenty of ways to work wood flooring ideas into your decorating scheme.
'With ever popular wood and wood effect flooring, the focus is on hand-crafted and hand-worked finishes - with scraped, sawn and treated grain effects in extra wide and mixed length planks adding depth and individuality to a space. Mindfulness and wellbeing remain a key topic in the home, and creating restful spaces to retreat to from our busy lives is more important than ever,' says Sarah Escott, Amtico Design Manager.
Wood flooring will always be a hugely versatile option for the use in interior design. Smart enough for a grand entrance yet with the durability to withstand splashes and spills in the kitchen or dining area, when laid throughout the home, it can create an inviting, seamless flow. Wood flooring can also provide a subtle, neutral base that can be beautifully layered and decorated with rugs to create a cozy, textured environment in a bedroom or living room.
We have gathered our favorite wood flooring ideas to provide you with some long-lasting inspiration for your home.
1. Use hard-wearing solid wood
Whether you have original, solid wood flooring in one part of your home and want to continue this design in other areas, or are looking to establish a mid-century modern look with wooden flooring in a new property, solid wood flooring can create an organic and authentic appeal.
Strong and durable, solid wood is not the cheapest flooring option, however, investing in a solid wood design can establish a timeless permanence to your flooring and enrich the space with character, texture and warmth.
Solid wood flooring is not just reserved for older, period properties, there is now an extensive range of solid wood flooring designs that can effortlessly integrate into homes of all ages and styles.

Light wood flooring can create a calming, relaxed atmosphere in the home, as well as enhancing the feeling of light and space in a room.
Colin Roby-Welford, Creative Director at Fired Earth states, ‘pale wood finishes are ideal for a pared-back Scandinavian feel, while rich, dark finishes have a more rustic appeal’.
Ideal for rooms that do not get much natural light, or for large, open-plan spaces to create an enriched sense of space, light wood flooring establishes a truly elegant, contemporary effect.
In this bathroom, the light wood flooring works with the other luxurious, natural textures and colors in the room to create a serene, inviting space. The light wood perfectly complements the marble and metallic accessories, as well as elevating the feeling of light in the room when paired with the white painted walls.
From oak, to ash and maple, there are a variety of options to choose from for your wood flooring ideas, as well as many light wood vinyl and laminate designs.
3. Lay a unique parquet pattern
Using a unique parquet design for your wood flooring ideas can create a beautiful design, rich with intricate details and eye-catching patterns.
The natural beauty of wood is elevated further when using a parquet pattern, creating a stand out floor design that will add luxurious character to a room.
In this luxury bedroom and on the flooring beyond, the wooden floorboards have been laid in a stunning Bordeaux parquet pattern. A French inspired design, defined by intertwining, complex geometric patterns and contrasting shapes, the result creates a truly stunning effect, adding a beautiful element of grandeur to a space – perfect for establishing a Parisian feel.

An extremely popular option for entryway floor ideas, engineered wood flooring combines the beauty of solid wood with the practicality of modern technology and design.
Engineered wooden planks are crafted from multiple layers. The top is a beautiful, decorative piece of solid wood, whereas the base is crafted from multiple layers of plywood. This combination creates a durable, hardwearing design that, once installed, achieves the same beautiful effect as solid wood but with hidden strength and durability beneath.
Engineered wood’s popularity mainly lies in its flexibility, it can be laid on almost any surface and withstand changes in temperature and humidity – ideal for use throughout the home and for areas with underfloor heating.
5. Create drama with dark wood
Adding depth and warmth to a room, dark wood flooring can work wonderfully in both period and modern properties. Creating a beautiful, traditional effect rich with color and character, dark wood flooring can add a stylish element of drama to a room.
In this beautiful barn, with reclaimed dark wood flooring by The Main Company , the white walls and dark wood flooring unite to form an elegant contrast. The overall minimalist, relaxed design lets the bedroom flooring take center stage, with other wooden features, such as the uniquely crafted wooden headboard, enhancing the beauty and feeling of natural texture in the space. Retaining the character of the original barn but with an elegant modern twist, the design creates a characterful mix of the old and the new.
6. Get creative with paint
If you want to change the existing wooden flooring in your home without the cost and effort of replacing the floor, or add an element of color and contemporary style to a period property, painting your floorboards is an inexpensive way to dramatically change the look of a space.
'Creating statement floor designs in the home is becoming increasingly popular, with many traditional wooden floor designs being painted to inject color and personality into a room. From simple color block designs, to creating unique patterns and tile effects with paint, wooden flooring provides a creative canvas for your paint ideas,' says Homes & Gardens' Editorial Director Sarah Spiteri.
In this cozy, country cottage room, painted in colors by Morris & Co , the wooden flooring has been painted white to match the wooden paneling on the ceiling. The cohesive, calming design creates a relaxing bedroom retreat that combines traditional features with modern colors.
Whether you create a Scandi-inspired space with white painted floorboards, or go bold with darker shades, painting your wooden flooring can keep things fresh and exciting.
7. Go for a rustic finish
You may be asking yourself if wood flooring is suitable for the kitchen? The answer is a resounding yes! Designed with prestigious projects in mind, the Hand Grade collection from Havwoods consists of rich tones and beautiful rustic finishes. In addition, the triple layered engineered planks are up to four meters long and almost half a meter wide with top and base layers of European oak and a birch ply core.
Choose from a smooth sanded surface or textured finish to bring a natural touch to your kitchen. ‘Kitchen flooring with character is becoming extremely popular,’ says Yolande Meyer, Havwoods. ‘It allows one to feel more in line with nature by being able to see the knots and the grains of the wood.’
8. Add warmth with honey tones
The latest engineered flooring to join Woodpecker’s Berkeley collection is Cathedral oak. Meticulously hand-scraped, the timber boards have subtle undulating ridges and grooves that capture a charming aged appearance and come with a 100-year guarantee.
At the same time, the wood’s natural honey, caramel and cocoa hues have been honed to offer a warm foundation to a room scheme, ‘this is a rustic board with a subtle oiled finish, allowing the knots and natural features to shine through,’ says Darwyn Ker, Managing Director, Woodpecker Flooring .
If your boards are looking a little tired, you can always refinish hardwood floors to return them to their original beauty.
9. Fake it with a lookalike
If a real wood floor is out of your budget or not possible in your home, there are some great alternatives around for your wood flooring ideas. One of those is luxury vinyl flooring (LVT), which is designed to replicate timber and can be laid in planks or tiles, with click lock or glue down techniques.
The Antique heart pine from Karndean comes as a loose lay longboard which has acoustic qualities, so it’s great for upper floors, loft conversions or those who live in flats. It’s also possible to replace individual planks if the need arises.
10. Introduce handsome herringbone
Admired in country homes for centuries, herringbone flooring is still a desirable choice for wood flooring ideas thanks to its enduring appeal.
‘A herringbone layout adds a subtle sense of texture and decorative detail to a floor,’ says Colin Roby-Welford, Creative Director at Fired Earth. ’Our Woodland Herringbone engineered tongue and groove planks simply slot together, making installation straightforward.
Made with FSC oak, the boards are brushed before a protective, low-maintenance matt lacquer is applied. The multi-layered construction gives strength and stability to help prevent warping in damp conditions or when used over underfloor heating.
‘Variation in color and texture is part of the natural appeal of wood. Dry-lay your flooring first to ensure a balanced spread of color and graining before fixing it in place,' advises Colin.
11. Think about size and scale
(Image credit: Woodworks by Ted todd)
Crafted from reclaimed pine planks discovered in a disused warehouse at Garston Dock, in the UK city of Liverpool, these boards are popular due to their size, as much as their character.
Wider and longer than most salvaged boards, they have been transformed into engineered flooring and finished with a naked skin lacquer to accentuate the natural beauty of the grain, and would work beautifully in large-scale projects such as barn conversions. ‘Reclaimed flooring provides a genuine connection to nature and adds a historical feeling to interiors,’ says Robert Walsh, Founder, Ted Todd .
12. Raise the tone
(Image credit: The Natural Wood Floor Co)
This oak aged parquet has tumbled edges and a soft worn look, giving it the appearance and characteristics of an antique floor. In addition, it’s finished with an ebony oil that enhances the timber’s natural features and provides the drama of a dark floor without being overpowering.
'Extremely forgiving even in high-traffic areas of the home due to its high durability, the real wood parquet floor sets the tone for the whole space, perfectly blending old with new for a timeless finish,' says Peter Keane, Director, The Natural Wood Floor Company .
13. Try an alternative
Real wood flooring isn’t always a viable option for some, yet the style can still be achieved with good quality luxury vinyl tiles (LVT).
Extremely durable and waterproof, LVT can be a good option for either kitchen or bathroom flooring, where splashes and spills are more likely to happen. It's also great for living spaces as it's less prone to scuffing or scratching than timber.
The same trends in timber flooring are also present and in demand, such as this beautiful basket weave. ‘Flooring patterns can completely change the look of a room,’ says Lorna Williams, Head of Product Design at Amtico . ‘Timeless patterns such as parquet, basket weave and French weave are popular with people wanting to create a classic and sumptuous look in their homes.’
If contemporary country style is more your thing, consider extra long boards, like these oak planks from Dinesen for your wood flooring ideas.
Sourced from large European oak trees, the boards are up to five meters long and 50cm wide, so there are less joins than is often seen with traditional sizes. This gives a cleaner, calmer, more modern appearance and a seamless look when connecting living spaces in open concept or broken plan living room schemes.
15. Mix past and present with reclaimed boards
(Image credit: The Reclaimed Flooring Company)
There's no need to shy away from wood flooring in the bedroom. This salvaged oak from The Reclaimed Flooring Company has been sourced from historic buildings across France, Central and Eastern Europe. Laying it in this classic chevron style gives subtle movement and a sense of grandeur to the simple room scheme.
It's also easy to see the beautiful flecks and characterful knots running through this light-colored timber, which is suitable for underfloor heating.
What is the most popular wood floor?
Oak is a popular choice as it has been used historically in homes and buildings for centuries. It's a durable hardwood that ages well and continues to look beautiful throughout its life. In addition much of it is sourced in FSC-certified forests.
'Boards with plenty of character are becoming extremely popular,' says Yolande Meyer, Havwoods. 'While prime grading was the favorite for some time, we are seeing more customers opting for planks with character grading, which will have more knots and traditional wooden characteristics such as visual cracks and sapwood, so offer a more "natural" look. '
What is the most affordable wood floor?
Wood floors are an expensive option and a long term investment. Some manufacturers offer warranties of up to 100 years, so you can expect a good-quality wood floor to last a lifetime.
If you're looking for an affordable alternative consider luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) as this can be less expensive than real wood.
At the budget end you can pick up softwood solid Spruce boards, however, these are unlikely to be compatible with underfloor heating and will need to be sealed.
What are on-trend wood floors?
'Herringbone has become extremely popular over the last year and will continue, especially in kitchens, bedrooms, and other spaces in the home,' says Yolande Meyer, Havwoods. 'Whether the pattern is used as an accent floor or an entire area, it's a great way to get creative but still maintain a calm and relaxing atmosphere.'
Neutral room ideas are also seeing a surge in popularity, with a real focus on natural materials, textures and colors used throughout the home. Wooden flooring provides the perfect foundation for your neutral room ideas, no mater the color, style or finish, you can create a beautiful neutral scheme shaped around your wood flooring ideas.

Choosing wood and laminate flooring can be a daunting task. There is a bottomless choice of brands, thickness, qualities and click systems. And once you have made sense of everything technical, then you must make the most important choice of all. How to pick the right color of laminate flooring? With so many options to consider, it can be confusing and somewhat overwhelming. At Wood Floor Warehouse we stock over 180 wood floors. While this can be fantastic when you want a lot of choice under one roof, it can sometimes present too many options. So here is our helping hand on where to begin?
Dark or Light Flooring?
We all have our own preferences here, but which will work best for your space. Here are a few tips to help you decide :
If you have any of the following points, dark flooring can often look fantastic:
- There is good Natural Light
- You have a light wall colouring
- when creating a rich interior
- when creating a moody interior
- when creating a cosy interior
- larger areas can benefit from a dark floor
Light coloured laminate flooring (or real wood) is a little easier to work with as it can help to brighten any space. Choose light flooring when :
- when a space needs brightened up
- in smaller spaces
- to create a calming interior
- when decorating with pastel colours
- when adding texture, eg rugs
- to create contrast. Eg adding a splash of colour with accessories
When choosing laminate floor colours, the decor style is also important. There is a real trend towards rustic wood flooring which we think is here for the long term. As laminate becomes more and more realistic, rustic and distressed style decors have really grown in popularity. This type of wood has lots of natural features such as knots, splits and colour variance. It is extremely versatile and works well in both traditional and modern spaces.
TIP: In very large spaces where a lot of the flooring is visable opt for a cleaner style. Laminate flooring will have pattern repeats and these can be easy to identify on a very large area. If it is well broken up with rugs and furniture, then it won't be an issue.
Picking a Laminate Floor Colour
There really are not a lot of common colours to choose from in laminate flooring. While there are colourful laminate floors available, the majority of choices are in shades of brown, dark and light tile effect and of course grey. Here are some tips on how to pick the right colour of laminate flooring.
Go For Colourful Decors if :
- You want something that really stands out
- When the floor is the main feature
- For themed spaces EG. Games rooms or children's rooms
- In design-led spaces EG. Cafes, Salons etc.
- To add energy to an interior
- When you are confident in your interior design skills
Choose a natural wood shade when:
- You want to play it safe
- For busy rooms EG living rooms, kitchens
- To create a natural interior
- When you have striking furniture or accessories to create a feature
- For timeless interiors
Tile effect laminates work well for:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens and utility areas.
- Ultra-modern flooring
- Practical working spaces such as salons.
Grey Laminate Flooring is great when:
- You want to be on-trend
- If you can contrast with colourful accessories
- To create a luxury feel
- You want to play safe
- To match with almost anything
With so much choice out there, hopefully, we have been able to provide a little bit of practical help. You can view our vast range of laminate floors on our website and filter by shade, colour and much more. If you still aren't sure how to pick the right color of laminate flooring, just get in touch with our team and we will be happy to help.
There is no doubt - laminate flooring trends are no flash in the interior design pan; they’re here to stay. The fact this finish is so cost-effective, yet looks and feels so realistic has made it one of the favourites of the flooring world. Add to this its easy installation (it can be done by a competent DIYer), and it’s clear – laminated floors aren't just a fad. Gone are the days of that standard beech 3-strip, 7mm laminate floor. Today, it rightly enjoys a top spot as one of the most popular types of diverse flooring for any home, full stop.
We check out some of the biggest directions this year, all of which will give your home the instant wow factor, no matter what design look you’re after.
Mixed width laminate flooring is oh so hot right nowFor those who love the imperfect perfection of nature, mixed width planks are going to make your home very much your happy place. There are a few hypotheses as to why this is such a big trend, but the single most significant is the fact that it gives your home a unique edge. In a world that is bent on making everything seem just-so, mixed width laminates are like the rebel of the interior design world. Those less daring look on in awe and wish they’d had the confidence to go for it as well. Another factor that has played a part in this becoming so huge is that it harps back to good times when in the mid 1800s flooring was made out of whatever boards were available. So this modern-day look is also a nod towards a more nostalgic time.
Grey is the ultimate colour of the moment
Who doesn’t want to go grey? It’s the darling of the interior design palette, and little wonder why. Part of the reason for this is grey wood flooring makes for such a colour-friendly base from which to build your décor palette. Rather than opting for a classic shade, grey adds an interesting twist without being polarising. It will work with your existing furniture, as well as anything new you buy. From almost-white grey, to ashen, to silver, to dark grey; you’ve plenty of grey colour choices.
Patterned laminate flooring trends continue to make a markForget precision lining! Some of the hottest patterns in modern surfaces actually find their roots in some of the most romantic décor eras – think incredibly chic bohemian Paris, cool and classic Tuscan villa. Once upon a time you just couldn’t mimic that established charm; with this product you can now imitate it so well your home will look every bit as authentic as the real thing. Our favourites are:
- Chevron
Classics are just forever on-trend. The chevron pattern is formed by a series of Vs that are laid out in zigzag formation. As is so often the case in the world of design, it is a pattern that is established in fabric, knitwear, painted surfaces and more. The name comes from the French word for rafters, and certainly it is an effect that resembles the way some rooftops are laid. Chevron has a timeless appeal that works incredibly well with conventional décor as well as the ultra-modern, and for this reason alone it will always a favourite.
- Herringbone
Not to be mistaken with chevron, the herringbone pattern flooring is achieved by stacking rectangles. Its name is derived from the herring fish, as the pattern very much resembles the way its bones are positioned. Herringbone finds its ancestry in the Roman Empire. Originally used as a paving pattern for roads it experienced a huge surge in popularity when applied to the feted Duomo in Florence. This sparked a folly for the look and it can now be found in some the world’s grandest chateaux and homes; this is a pattern of pedigree. For flooring that says prestige, herringbone is perfect.
- Parquet
Speaking of looks that are anything but common, you can’t go past parquet. The penchant for parquet originally emerged in the 1600s when the wealthy wanted a surface that was not as ubiquitous as marble and certainly nothing common like, gasp, earth or concrete. Versailles embraced parquet with gusto and spawned the start of a long-standing love affair the world over. Nothing looks – or sounds – so Parisian chic as parquet. It just goes to show that some of the hottest laminate flooring trends are born from some of the longest-standing décor stalwarts!
Budget-friendly, a huge choice of colour and design finishes, easy to install and just so beautiful in the home; laminate flooring delivers all the benefits you could be after for your home. It’s little surprise this is one hot interior design look that is staying put!
If you’re about to embark on a build or a renovation and you’re considering wooden floors, that’s an excellent choice. There is nothing quite like the charm of timber in the home – it imbibes a tranquillity and wholesomeness that makes for a truly beautiful blank canvas. It helps bring the outside inside!
Now flooring your entire home or a particular space within it is something you want to consider carefully. The floor, of course, is one of the largest spaces in any home and you want to be completely confident that it will work with everything else.
The good news is it is really easy – this is a natural base that is going to work beautifully with so many looks.
We’ve pulled together these ideas to help get you thinking about how to match all wooden floors with the rest of your home so that you can achieve a look that’s perfect for your space.
How to match the floors with the wall colour- When it comes to white walls, the tone is important
Obviously the safest colour for your walls is of course white. That said, be sure to match tone with tone here for the most complimentary look. If your surface has a warm tone, then opt for a warm white. If your surface has a cool tone, look for a cool white. This helps to ensure that your walls don’t appear dull, or to clash with the flooring. If you have a lot of timber furniture (see below) then you’re safest to stick with a white wall as this neutral palette will help tie the two together, rather than create yet another off-set.
- Don’t be afraid to inject colour
If you want to move away from a conventional wood-and-white pairing and you’d like to see some colour on your walls as well as your floors, that’s an exciting prospect. Red hued timber should work well with an olive or green wall. If your surface is more ashen in colour then consider warm blues, pinks, or even pale yellow. For timber with a golden finish look at soft pastels on the walls, like a blush, delicate violet.
How to match wooden floors with wooden furnitureThe floor-to-wall-to-ceiling timber panelled room that resembles a 1970s sauna approach to interior design is, thankfully, a moment contained in the past!
That said, of course, you may want to work with (a more understated version of) this pairing at home. The good news here is that you can do this without creating a sensory overload!
- Avoid trying to match your timber too closely
If you’ve not yet purchased your furniture or your floors then it’s a good idea to keep the two separate – don’t try and match like with like as it will give the room a heavy and laboured feel.
- Use other tricks to connect
Try to link your natural materials in other ways. For instance, perhaps you can create a connection via a distressed look floor? The floor and furniture may very well be two entirely different types of timber, but this distressed look connects them and creates a pleasing visual balance. And besides, it’s a huge trend at the moment!
Grain might be another way to match the two; again they could be a different colour but the fact they both share a large grain effect helps to visually unite them.
- ‘Scatter’ your furniture
Disperse your furniture throughout the room. Again, this avoids creating a heavy and dull interior. By simply placing key furniture throughout the room, rather than all sitting together in the one area, there is no single resting place for the eye and it can take in the whole overall feel and look of the space.
- Avoid heavy sheens or shellacs
One of the beauties of natural resource flooring and furniture is that it looks, well, natural. Adding therefore, a heavy shellac coat to wooden furniture can take away from this natural feel and beauty, and make it sit rather awkwardly with the flooring. Try to keep the furniture as natural looking as possible.
- Dark floors and dark furniture
Traditionally here one would team dark flooring with furniture that is a few shades lighter (and with a white or very light wall colour). An increasing trend is to buck this safety and just embrace the very “moody” all round. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but certainly it can make for a terrifically striking and impactful space. We’d be inclined to suggest this is done in a room that is well-lit naturally, just so the area doesn’t get too oppressive and heavy!
- Light floors and light furniture
If your surface doesn’t have a strong undertone of red or yellow, then you’re in luck. This means they’re neutral and you can be relaxed with the colours of light furniture you use; select anything you want, really! If however, you can detect this hue in your flooring then aim to find light chairs, tables etc with the same hue.
- Dark floors and light furniture, or vice versa
This really is a winning combination. It shows there has not been a laboured effort to really match the two (and therefore risk making a laboured mistake). Pairing dark with light is the best way to strike harmony!
Combine nature with nature
It is no surprise that natural-looking floors are wonderful when paired with other elements from nature. Think gorgeous ceramic pots (although be sure to put protectors underneath so they don’t scratch the floor’s surface) with beautiful green indoor plants. Glass tables pair fabulously with natural resource floors and if anything help to really champion them as opposed to competing with them. Indeed, with such spectacular flooring, you will be unlikely to want to hide it with a rug. However, in some circumstances a little extra underfoot might be necessary and when that’s the case, we love to opt for something small and equally natural-looking, say a delicately patterned jute matt for instance.
This is a surface were you can achieve the most beautiful, natural foundation on which to work the rest of your interior décor magic. Keep these ideas in mind and you won’t go wrong!
Follow any quality interior design blogger, or pick up the latest home magazine and you are going to see them. Long, wide flooring planks. They are fever-pitch hot right now and they look so good that we know this trend is here to stay.
Why are they so on-trend?They play a visual trick, making a room more elongated and therefore giving it space and scale. Combine the two and you have an area that might actually not be all that big, but it feels generous. The sparsity of this approach compared to more traditional installations helps achieve a calming, more clutter-free impression. There tends to be fewer joints used and sometimes they can be eliminated entirely, making for an extra clean and ‘clear’ space.
The beauty is they will work for a small apartment right through to a big family home.
What kind of finish are long wide planks available in?
Just because you’ve decided on this type of surface for your home doesn’t mean you have to now restrict your choices. There are plenty of options available.
- Solid wood flooring.
The real thing, there is nothing quite like authentic and solid timber flooring. Laying a room in solid wood will make your floor an incredible, inimitable space. Sigh – this is the king of flooring!
- Engineered wood flooring.
This can go by many other names including man-made wood, composite wood, manufactured board, etc. It is the term used for derivative wood products that are combined to form a composite material. Engineered wooden flooring doesn’t require a tree to be a certain shape or length, so it’s a lot easier to provide what you’re asking for.
- Laminate flooring.
More cost-effective than the real thing, but still looking every bit as authentic, is laminate flooring. This is available in a range of options resembling natural oaks and walnuts, and ranging in colour from coppers, to ashen, limestone to deep brown.
- Click Vinyl flooring.
This is a particularly great option for high traffic areas and/or wet rooms in the home as it’s both hard-wearing and water-resistant. However perhaps its greatest selling point, and rightly so, is the ease and flexibility of installation. Essentially this product features a quick-lay locking mechanism that can be installed over the underlay or even the underfloor heating of a room.
What is the size of a long, wide plank? There is already a lot of diversity in the length and width of the flooring world. On average it’s reasonable to say that a plank will commonly range from 1.2m up to 2.4m in length. Widths are generally between 160mm and 300mm. The solid wood option tends to be just that bit shorter and narrower. This is because wood floor can naturally warp. The longer and wider a piece of solid wood is, the more it can warp. Because engineered flooring commonly uses a plywood base, it remains a more stable shape, allowing for longer and wider planks.
Are they easy to install? It’s not so much the size of the flooring, but the material used that will dictate how easy it is to install. Something like laminate flooring can be installed by a competent DIYer, whereas with solid or engineered wood, we recommend are installed by a professional.
Do they cost more?
If you’re considering them in solid timber then yes, they will cost more. This is because you require a seamless cut from a tree without imperfections. Generally they will be cut lower / shorter so as to cut around defects, which are common. This means that only trees of the highest quality can be used for this type of flooring. When it comes to engineered wood, laminate and LVP flooring however, there is minimal cost difference.
Most of us are unlikely to rip up our flooring each season and go for whatever the rage is that month. For this reason alone it always bodes well to select a finish that you are confident will look amazing now, and in future years. You don’t want your floors to feel ‘last year’ before the grout has even set! Looking at this finish you can see it has timeless appeal; long, wide planks are a trend that will look after your home today and tomorrow, so install with confidence!
Finding the best bathroom floor ideas for your home means taking a few things into consideration.
Unlike other spaces in the house, this room has to work extra hard.
It’s a heavily functional area – it has to withstand the daily wear and tear that is assured given it’s one of the most used and needed rooms in the home.
It’s also a space that homeowners want to enjoy. You want to enter and feel like you’re in a clean, ventilated, pleasing environment. Many of us want to emulate that day spa look and feel, and bring this into our personal space. This is especially so for parents of young families, as it’s often this room that is their last sanctuary and place for momentary escape (although let’s be frank, it doesn’t always work out that way!).
So when it comes to ideas for the surface, what is going to tick all those boxes? Here we will share some essential things to consider as well as some of the trends to help you find the perfect solution.
In terms of function, what is the best bathroom floor material to use?You have plenty of choice! As long as you keep in mind a few mandatory features (see below), then you have a fabulous selection available.
Great-functioning surfaces include:
- Tiles
Ceramic tiles, stone tiles and porcelain tiles can all be terrific in wet rooms. However, be aware of factors such as slip rating (more on this below).
- Sheet Vinyl (Lino)
Sheet vinyl is often used as it has very few seams that will let moisture infiltrate. As rolls usually come up to 5m wide, it is possible to cover an entire room without any seams, provided the room is less than 5m wide. It is one of the most cost-effective floor coverings available, but it can look and feel a little budget. To help avoid this we recommend gluing it down and having it professionally installed.
- Click Vinyl Flooring (LVT)
Although it is relatively new to the market, LVT flooring (luxury vinyl tile) is the fastest growing floor covering in the world right now. Also known as click vinyl, this versatile floor covering is warm and durable. And when it is this easy to install, we’re almost tempted to create a new look each season. This product essentially features a quick-lay locking mechanism that enables you to install it over underlay. While a soft vinyl top layer is used, high-quality print and embossed surfaces help to make this a luxury floor in both look and feel. Adhesive is not required and it’s particularly great for rooms experiencing a lot of water use.
- Laminate
Water-resistant laminate surfaces for the room in general are appropriate, but don’t apply this to the actual shower area. This space, of course, will regularly come in contact with direct water and needs a fully waterproof solution.
What are the most important features in a bathroom floor? There are no surprises here. When it comes to any wet room there are some bathroom flooring ideas and features you absolutely cannot do without.
- Water resistance
Selecting waterproof material for your shower and then waterproof or water-resistant surfaces for this room in particular is crucial. Of all homes in the house, it’s here that will bear the full force of exposure to direct water. No matter how effectively ventilated, this space is always going to experience a degree of damp due to condensation/ steam.
Making sure you select water-repelling tile grout is essential for these spaces.
- Slip rating
More often than not people will be wet underfoot when using this room, and so keeping the slip factor minimal is incredibly important. A universally recognised rating system running from R9 to R13 gives you an objective idea of what finish you require. R9 is the most slippery grading on this scale, whilst R13 is the least slippery. R9 and R10 must be avoided for use in wet rooms. R11 and R12 are considered the ideal rating for a residential wet rooms.
- Mould resistance
When it comes to cleaning in any wet room, mould is likely to be your number one enemy. This is most prolific wherever there is grouting. Opting for mould resistant tile grout will make a big difference in the maintenance of your wet room surfaces.
Laminate makes this issue redundant – it is a ‘dry’ installation that doesn’t require grout, mortar or adhesives to set up and dry.
Another effective option is to go for a surface in vinyl, for example, that will minimise the seams and need for grout. That said Vinyl Tile Grout is not only great for repelling mould, it is highly stain resistant as well.
What are the best bathroom floor trends for 2019?- Distressed finishing
Do you have dreams of finding some abandoned inner-city warehouse that you then do up like a stellar SoHo pad? Or are you more rustic, Boho country shack surrounded by a romantic hobby orchard? OK, we are getting carried away by our interior homemaking fantasies, but a renovation is a permit to dream! Distressed surfaces tick these passion boxes and many more. The room will ooze charm with this kind of surface. Mark our words – your feet will want to stay firmly planted!
- Herringbone and chevron
Patterned timber finishes are the designer darling of any room of the home, but they’re enjoying a renewed appeal in modern wet rooms. They’re a way to add some flair and personality, and do something a little unexpected. You thought you were stepping in here for a standard shower? Not with this look – you’re entering a Parisian loft, a classic Italian villa, or an oh-so-cool Scandi pad. This is definitely not just a mere wet room with that kind of finish!
- Stone with a twist
Is it something about river rocks and bathing that make natural-looking stone such a wet room favourite? We’ve seen this look get a bit of a modern revamp lately, with finishes like Oriental Stone. This embraces a really intricate design overlaid onto an otherwise stone finish. It’s a meeting of two worlds – detailed patterns and Mother Nature – and means you have twice as many design options when it comes to dressing the rest of the room.
- Long, wide planks
This look is huge for any room in the home. The great thing about long, wide planks (opt for laminate or vinyl in wet rooms as opposed to genuine solid timber) is they make a small space appear a lot more spacious than it might really be, which is often the case for this room of the house.
We hope you’re now inspired and informed enough to find the best bathroom flooring ideas for your home.
Let’s be clear right away. By ‘cheap’ laminate flooring we are of course referring to the cost, and not the result. Low on price and high on impact, it is little wonder that laminate is one of the hottest trends in flooring right now. Let's take a look in more detail about this flooring type.
What is laminate flooring?Laminate flooring is one of interior design’s great chameleons. It is a man-made product that is designed to look and feel like timber or stone. It comprises an MDF or HDF core on-top of which is layered a high definition printed décor (say a wooden panel or smooth stone design) and then coated with resin for maximum protection. A click system makes it effortless to join each laminate board together, therefore avoiding the use of glue.
Cheap Pricing?
Everyone wants a cheap price, but not so much a cheap floor. Laminate flooring prices vary dramatically but even some of the entry-level laminate floors are excellent quality with great warranties. It is important to make sure that your floor is from a recognized brand, to ensure that you have a quality product. It's also a good idea to purchase from a retailer who buys directly from the factory. This way you can ensure that you cutting out the middlemen. At Wood Floor Warehouse, all of our laminate floors come straight from the factory to our stores. While we may have some very cheap laminate floors, we certainly don't compromise on quality.
There are so many features in laminate flooring, that we will discuss below. Some of these may impact the cost, but for many customers it’s worth that bit extra (and besides, the starting point price is low to begin with).
What do laminate floors look like?
Modern, sophisticated, natural, clean, contemporary; the beauty of laminate flooring is that is can deliver so many varied wooden or stone looks, none of which appears cheap!
Let’s say you’re after an oak floor – what colour oak? Silver, chalk, a limestone wash, light brown, dark brown, pale grey…? Do you want something so realistic that even individual timber grains are visible? What about patterns? Do you want straight panels, or herringbone or perhaps parquet effect? Or would you prefer stone and if so, a patterned stone tile, a river rock look, or something more industrial? Laminate won’t limit your décor options.
What are the benefits of using laminated flooring?Where to start! There are so many pros to using laminate that it is hard to consider other flooring options. Here are just some of the reasons that makes laminate such a household favourite
- Budget-friendly
The first big bonus in using laminate flooring is that it is so cheap, especially compared to the natural resources it imitates so convincingly. So if your home build or renovation is working to a fairly tight budget, opting for laminate floors is a way to keep costs reasonable.
- Highly durable
Laminate floors are also highly durable and in fact you can rely on the objective universal AC Rating system to determine a product’s resistance to abrasions, stains, burns etc. The AC Rating runs from AC1 for products that should be used only in light footfall areas (like a guestroom), to AC3, the highest residential rating level and appropriate for any surface in the house. AC4 and 5 are commercial ratings.
We all know someone who has laid their floors with a product that has then warped or shrunk. It can lead to costly, dysfunctional and/or unattractive results. This occurs usually when the choice of flooring is impacted by the elements – e.g. the heat, dampness or cold of the air in the home. It is an avoidable issue when using laminate flooring; just be sure to firstly let the product “sit and settle” in your home for 48-hours or so before actually laying it.
As we’ve already seen, the décor options for laminate floors is so varied that no matter what look you want to achieve in your home, there will be a laminate that can deliver.
- Easy installation
The technological and design advances made by laminate over the years means this is now one incredibly low-maintenance, time-friendly floor to install. In fact, laminate is such a user-friendly product that it can be laid by a competent DIYer as opposed to having to spend more money on a professional installation. You and your bank account will be freed up before you know it to move onto the next home design project. Find out just how straight-forward and easy it is to install laminate flooring here.
- Underfloor heating
If you’re looking for options that will work with underfloor heating you can still consider laminate floors. Just be sure to touch base with us and let us know so we can steer you in the right direction.
- Wet room
Again, you will not have trouble finding a laminate solution for your bathroom or laundry. Laminate floors with waterproof cores are available, but of course, be sure to apply with waterproof seals to prevent mould or rot.
How to care for laminate floors. As it is with any feature of your home, the better it is looked after and cared for, the longer it will serve you. Although laminate floors are designed to be incredibly hard-wearing, they’re not made of Teflon! Find out in our guide - How to care for your laminate floor.
If you’re designing or renovating your home, you know only too well how quickly the costs escalate. Finding a product that is going to deliver a truly premium impact without a truly premium price tag is a welcome relief, and laminate is most certainly that. This is a design choice your home and bank balance will both appreciate!
There is really is nothing quite like real wood flooring to add warmth, luxury, and style to any interior. Despite being popular since the 1600's, there has been growing popularity with wood flooring in recent years as real wood flooring trends look back, mixing traditional style with modern trends. With technical advances in engineered wood flooring, even more styles are available thanks to thanks increased stability that engineered flooring offers. Although wood flooring has never really gone out of style, there are lots of fantastic styles to choose from. Let's take a look at some of the hottest trends today.
The Classic
Natural oak flooring finished in lacquer or oil. There really is nothing that presents natural wood quite so well. This very popular type of wood floor that can work with almost any interior. The natural colors work well with a pale or neutral colour scheme, but don't be afraid to add a little splash of colour. We really love this classic wood floor when paired with deep charcoals and whites.
Going Grey?
Everyone is going grey lately, well in flooring terms anyway. Grey wood flooring has never been so popular and is right on-trend. Real woods are finished with a light or dark grey oil to maintain the traditional element while adding a modern twist. Grey is a calming colour that can be easy to match any style with but it works best in a modern space. We recommend matching in darker woods and picking 1-2 feature colours for creating interesting focus points of your interior.
Distressed Out!
A distressed wood floor has been made to look like a reclaimed wood floor by methods such as bashing, tumbling, scraping, staining and more. The various methods used are growing each and every day to replicate the appearance of expensive reclaimed flooring. A distressed floor vs reclaimed offers some great advantages:
- Cost savings
- More Available Stock
- Not limited to small one-off batches
- Better quality control during manufacture
Tip: Distressed floors can often have higher levels of waste when compared to regular wood flooring as very rustic flooring is commonly used.
Downtown Abbey
Period style parquet flooring is making a huge comeback, especially in trendy city bars and hotels, and naturally, this trend is influencing the hippest of living spaces. Among these styles, the most popular without a doubt is herringbone flooring. The "V" shaped floor is a nod to the traditional parquet blocks commonly laid in 18th century stately homes. Today, they are often mixed with distressed styling on a more DIY friendly engineered wood floor. We love herringbone flooring as it works well in traditional and modern spaces, and this timeless appeal will never look old, as that is almost the point!
Having the latest style often means compromising on a traditional or timeless design. Choosing something too funky might look dazzling right away, but when fashions inevitably change, what was once cutting edge, can be stand-out awful. But no-one want to be boring, right? Enter parquet flooring. It’s interesting and trendy, yet timeless and traditional. A parquet style wood floor is a throwback to the period homes of the late 1600’s when these floors were first introduced. Herringbone flooring is the preferred style or parquet today and it looks fantastic.
When installed in almost any space, parquet flooring creates a stand out feature. The interesting herringbone or intricate shapes often become a talking point of any interior design, while remaining traditional and safe even when design trends update.
For an authentic and luxury feel we highly recommend real wood parquet. This can be solid wood or engineered flooring. It can be refinished and stained to match any style or interior so you won't be restricted with colours if you decide on an overhaul in the future. This makes a real wood herringbone floor a fantastic investment. Just remember to install those felt pads underneath all furniture. Real wood can be scratched easier than other flooring types and dragging heavy furniture across it is the most common culprit.
Installing real wood herringbone is a little trickier than traditional flooring installations. We highly recommend using an approved installer who has plenty of experience with laying parquet wood flooring.
Due to its current popularity parquet style and herringbone flooring is available in various floor types. We stock parquet and herringbone styles:
Available Materials
- Click Vinyl Tiles (LVT)
- Engineered Wood
- Laminate
- Solid Wood
These can be a fantastic cost-effective alternatives to real wood and they are considerably harder to mark and scratch which can make them a fantastic choice.
Installation of laminate and click vinyl is often considerably easier than real wood and can usually be carried out by anyone who is reasonably competent at DIY. Convenient click system’s and stable characteristics in varying temperatures, help make these floors perfect for home DIY projects.
Innovations in printing synthetic designs in wood flooring have moved on considerably in recent years leading to some herringbone laminate floors and LVT floors looking extremely realistic.

How to care for a wooden floor
Protect your floor from dirt
Keep dirt and sand out of the door
To keep your floor beautiful, lay out a rug to wipe your shoes on when you enter. Ideally, lay two rugs, one outside, the other inside.
Use furniture pads
Place soft pads on the legs of the table, chairs and make sure that they do not fly off. Do not use metal pads as they can leave dents on the floor and also scratch it.
Light colored floors require more attention
If you have light parquet, you should clean them a little more often as they are more prone to wear.
Cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning wooden floors
Dry cleaning is the best way to clean wooden floors, it is much better than wet cleaning. Use a vacuum cleaner and a brush regularly, and only occasionally a damp, well-wrung mop. For best results, use the special Kährs Cleaner, a water-soluble cleaner or the ready-to-use Kahrs Cleaner spray cleaner. If the parquet does not dry within a minute, then you have used too much water. Remember that beech and Canadian maple are very sensitive to moisture.
Remove marks
Remove marks as quickly as possible with Kährs Cleaner diluted in water. Avoid cleaning products containing ammonia.
Oiled floors : Use of strong stain removers and hard brushes may cause fading. Lubricate the cleaned area with Kährs Satin Oil. If, after removing the stain, you notice a difference in color where the stain was, use Kährs tinted oil (Kährs Touch-up oil.)
Varnished floors: Strong cleaners and hard brushes can damage the varnished surface. Please read our tips for removing tough stains on page 18 of our hardwood floor care guide.
Parquet care tips
Oiled floors should be treated immediately after laying and should be done annually thereafter. Both oiled and lacquered floors can be refurbished when they become difficult to clean or when their surface becomes scratched or tarnished.
Oiled floors: Use Kährs Satin Oil.
Lacquered floors: Use Kährs lacquer freshener.
Dents and scratches
Restoration - Oiled floors
Use Kährs Satin Oil to smooth out small dents and scratches. For deeper scratches, use Kährs tinted oil (Kährs Touch-up oil.) For very deep dents, scratches or cracks, first use Kährs Hard Wax or Kährs Wood Filler.
Restoration of a wooden floor covered with oil and wax.
Refurbishment - Lacquered floors
Use Kährs Lacquer Refresher to smooth out small dents and scratches. For deeper scratches, use Kährs Touch Up Lack. For very deep dents, scratches and cracks, first use Kährs Hard Wax or Kährs Wood Filler.
