13 Historic Houses Every Design Lover Should Visit In Person
There are houses, and there are houses. A good one is enduring, inspires curiosity, and imprints a stamp of rebooted creativity on anyone who visits. But historic houses, and their accompanying tours, are not a monolith. Some are troves of original objects that never left, and others are masterworks of specialized sourcing. Some have been demolished, rebuilt from scratch and reconstructed from old records. Whether preserved through love or money, or both, these jewel boxes of American design span centuries, and designers will never tire of poking around their inspirational gold mines. Here, said designers share their favorite historic houses across the US—with a particular emphasis on the Eastern seaboard.
Beauport
Beauport (built in 1907), or the Sleeper-McCann House, was Henry Davis Sleeper’s home in Cape Ann’s Gloucester. With tony clients like Joan Crawford, Sleeper was a prolific decorator in the early days of professional design, but his own house on Eastern Point was where his instincts for color, maximalism and architectural salvage really went wild. “He certainly knew quality,” says AD100 designer David Netto, “but he didn’t do that style for his clients, his approach was more academic. Beauport is like a movie set.”
A unique blend of Shingle, Queen Anne, Colonial, and European revival styles, the house is over 14,000 square feet, comprised of 40-plus rooms, hidden staircases, Chinese and Spode porcelain, Spanish and Portuguese glaze, American glass, hooked rugs, endless prints, and a level of collector’s detail that would make Tony Duquette proud. When Helena Woolworth McCann (Frank Woolworth’s daughter) bought the house, she left it largely untouched and lived in the memory of Sleeper’s many parties and eccentric houseguests.
As Netto describes, “It’s a bohemian house built by an artistic person, that was then coveted by someone rich. Rich people always want more order, but there was this bananas house and she wanted it. I find that very interesting.” A Nooks and Crannies Tour walks visitors through every hidden inch. “I love secrets,” Netto says. “And this house is secretive.”

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
The Deering family of agricultural scions were no strangers to developing magnificent properties in Florida, including the grand Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (built between 1914–22) in Coconut Grove. The villa is cradled by a subtropical forest and Biscayne Bay, and is, as Miami designer Juan Poggi of Poggi Design says, a true interpretation of Mediterranean architecture, with Aubusson rugs, gold leaf moldings, silk damask walls, and chandeliers in crystal, porcelain, or carved wood. “James Deering had to be a very sophisticated man to work around all this space with such a clear knowledge of what he and his team were trying to accomplish,” Poggi says. “It was a very sophisticated home for Florida at the beginning of the 20th century. I have carefully explored it several times, because it’s a bundle of details and not a simple place to describe. It’s the closest thing we have around here to a European museum.”
historical interior, verified to the smallest detail
The creation of the interior of this house, located in the center of the Northern capital, on Kamenny Island, required serious research from the authors to study historical analogues.

After a complete reconstruction of a cottage in St. Petersburg, the space acquired the necessary clarity and clarity. Its center was a two-height atrium with a picturesque plafond imitating the ribs of a medieval temple vault. The vaulted shape visually raises the ceiling and emphasizes the severity of the lines of the two tiers and arcades. The dome is crowned with a grandiose handmade chandelier made of patinated silver and vintage crystal, which makes the space even more solemn and majestic. Around this hall - the courtyard of the galleries are living quarters.
Marble fireplace - the author's replica of French castle fireplaces of the XV-XVI centuries. The floor is laid out in the form of a type-setting marble mosaic. Chandeliers are made according to the sketches of the authors in the workshop "Russian Modern"
“The most important task of the project is simplicity and rigor,” says Ekaterina Shebunina. — Before us, the customers set a goal: no pretentiousness, the rejection of excessive luxury in favor of simple forms. We used the Roman, and later the Western European tradition of building a living space with its purity of constructive solutions, balanced proportions, impact on the feelings of people who see aesthetic, beautiful, regular forms around them.”“Large spaces in residential interiors require specific solutions,” continues Natalia Yushchieva. “It is important to balance the areas that are out of scale for a person, not to turn the house into a palace-museum that could alienate the owners with its pathos.”
The atrium structure makes the house more human, lighter, more airy and full of light. Splendor and entertainment are also preserved: the entire hall is perfectly visible through the arched openings, a view of the falling strands of crystal chandeliers, a marble staircase, aged travertine floors, antique tapestries and paintings by old masters opens up.
Despite the classic surroundings, by modern standards there is everything you need for a comfortable life: swimming pool, spa area, elevator, two libraries, four bedrooms, two guest rooms, nine bathrooms.
The eclectic nature of the interior is designed to emphasize the long and rich history of the house. The spacious library, one of the attributes of the aristocratic way of life, is decorated in a traditional manner for such premises. Bookcases, boiserie made in the workshop "Betra". Table - according to the author's project "Workshop of Andrey Pogunov". Chairs, Century Furniture. The chandelier and table lamps were made according to the sketches of the author in the St. Petersburg workshop "Russian Modern"
The second floor, where the spouses' private apartments are located, was divided into male and female parts, which resonated with their design.
The bedroom of the owner of the house is rather modestly furnished: only the most necessary pieces of furniture, but demonstrating the refined taste of the owner. Paintings, tapestries - antique. Bed, bedside tables, Stanley. Chairs, Vittorio Grifoni. Lamps, Fine Art Lamps
The third floor is also very impressive. Its central volume is a winter garden enclosed in a transparent case made of hand-forged metal railings and beveled glass. Thanks to the stained-glass window in the ceiling, the room is filled with light and bizarre reflections from numerous reflective surfaces.
The central volume of the third floor is occupied by a winter garden, enclosed by transparent walls made of wrought iron bars and faceted glass. Through the bypass gallery, decorated with paintings from the owners' collection, you can get to the office, library, children's and guest rooms
The house looks very respectable; it seems that he exchanged more than one hundred years. Such a feeling arises when looking at the interior, the stylistic framework of which covers a wide time period - from the early Renaissance to Art Nouveau. The authors needed to create the effect of historical authenticity, as if more than one generation of the family had lived here and each brought something of its own. Elements of decoration of different styles and eras were selected according to the principle of elitism and impeccable taste.“In the interior, everything is thought out to the gimlet and subjected to a thorough qualification for the authenticity of beauty,” notes Ekaterina. - There are no random things. There is no cloying and excessive luxury, only objects of real art. We carefully studied the original sources and rethought them. As a result, a fireplace (a compilation of French castle fireplaces of the 15th-16th centuries), marble floors, Venetian mirrors, original paintings based on medieval stained-glass windows with zodiac symbols and a Ptolemaic model of the world, unique forged products and stucco decoration appeared here.
“The dusty, restrained scale united everything into a single original picture-image, which, like a carefully preserved rarity, has come down to us from time immemorial.”
Behind the open door portals flanking the fireplace is the dining room. It is decorated in a more restrained, chamber manner compared to the palace splendor of the living room and hall. The decoration of the room was a dining table made of an aged mirror manufactured by Arte Veneziana and an Italian-style stained-glass door leading to the kitchen. Exquisite contrast is created by fabrics: luxurious velvet upholstery of chairs and noble simplicity of curtains made of unbleached linen. Chairs, Vittorio Grifoni. The chandelier was made according to the sketches of the 19th century in the workshop "Russian Modern"
Ekaterina Shebunina notes: “This is one of the most interesting projects in our practice. We needed to achieve the impression of historical authenticity, authenticity, the feeling that the interior appeared and developed naturally over hundreds of years, as if it were an old palazzo in Italy or a castle in France. The atmosphere of the place also contributed to this: the house is located in the very center of St. Petersburg, and the interior has absorbed all the best that was in Western European palace architecture. ”

The bathroom in the master bedroom is finished with slabs of light gray Calacatta marble with veins, the floor is lined with Roman marble mosaics. Paired mirrors and Venetian-style lamps make the room even more refined and sophisticated
The central volume of the third floor is occupied by a winter garden, enclosed by transparent walls made of wrought iron bars and faceted glass. A roundabout gallery decorated with paintings from the owners' collection leads to the office, library, children's and guest rooms.

Living room. Wall decoration is kept to a minimum: ascetic, dusty-gray concrete surfaces further accentuate the unique elements of decoration - from the hand-painted ceiling to antique tapestries and paintings by old masters. The ceiling is decorated in the style of an Italian palazzo: the subject of the painting with zodiac symbols and the Ptolemaic model of the structure of the world is borrowed from medieval engravings and stained-glass windows. A chess table and console made of metal, glass and crystal refresh the classic style of the living room and add a modern gloss to the traditional palace setting

The kitchen is the author's fantasy on the theme of a medieval interior. The work area with the stove is located inside a giant “fireplace”, the refrigerator and other household appliances are hidden inside cabinets with laconic solid wood facades, the floor is lined with Italian-style handmade ceramic tiles made by Moroccan craftsmen, and the island is illuminated by a rock crystal chandelier in the spirit of Ar -deco. Kitchen, SieMatic
