Can you lay decking on soil?
'You shouldn't build a deck directly on the ground for a normal installation,' says Karl Harrison, Trex Pro decking installer and founder of Karl Harrison Designs. 'Even on level ground it will move when wet and your platform will become unstable. If the posts and beams that support the deck are made of wood, they are likely to deteriorate long before your deck does if in contact with the ground as water soaks into the wood and can’t dry out quickly.
'If you want a quick deck, you may lay a 2in [50mm] depth of gravel over a weed membrane and use plastic joists,' Karl continues. 'These are recycled and won't rot either – they are called HDPE which stands for High Density Polyethylene.
'Be sure to use stainless fixings when building your deck frame,' he adds.
'This type of construction would be suitable for a small decking with light loads and only occasional use.
'For a more sturdy decking project, if you can, support your decking posts over concrete pads and make sure the frame doesn't touch the ground. These posts fixed to your beams will help to stabilize your deck and can also mean your deck will last longer as the substructure is not exposed to the problems when touching the ground.'
It's handy if you already have a patio or a paved area under the decking, Karl adds. 'This means you can use plastic pedestals to raise the joists off the ground.' This would be a long-lasting decking structure, he says, and it's quite a bit quicker to install.

Curving paths with black paving A dark charcoal paver was our option for the path, the client liked it as it worked with the colors of the property. The size and shape of the path lent itself to the Chelmer Valley clay paver called “Amersham”. A tumbled and rustic style brick which is much softer looking than a sharp-edged brick. Covered garden decking terrace A prominent feature of the garden is the covered decking terrace. Wrapped in a simple batten trellis and surrounded by planting and a fire pit area. It has lights, power, a tv projector and lovely furniture. The materials are all pine, this includes the substantial posts and decking. This small back garden had more than its share of issues to address.
From the narrow angled site, to the slope of the ground, lack of privacy, public drains, aging existing retaining walls and deck, underground electrical wiring, and difficult access, it really had it all! The clients wanted a leafy secluded spot, where they could relax, entertain and feel immersed in nature. They also wanted a small productive area for some herbs and fruit trees. A garden shed was required and a means of access through from the front garden, although privacy was to be important. The old deck was removed and replaced with beautiful vitex decking. This new deck connect the rooms of the house and wraps itself around the house, effectively managing the worst of the slope and creating clear symmetry within the angled boundaries. A central retained bed with a feature flowering cherry tree creates a generous boardwalk and makes the decking feel part of the garden. A privacy screen and considered planting increases privacy. A series of oversize platform stairs leading up to the highest part of the garden, which is filled with raised beds for vegetable and herbs and fruit trees.
Generous natural schist stepping stones connect the utility area of the garden to the decked area and meander through the vege garden. The planting is designed to be leafy and green with soft white accents through the season. Beautiful feature trees include Prunus Shimidsu Sakura, Cercis Canadensis and Betula jacquemonti. How to build an elevated boardwalk
Dig holes 96 cm apart. Lower a concrete block into each hole and pour a post with a square section with a side of 7.5 cm into the concrete.
Saw a plank with a section of 8 by 3.5 cm into segments of the required length, determine the desired height of the flooring and nail the planks to the posts.
Stuff the inner frame with planks so that the spacings are approximately 30 cm apart. Lay a 10 cm wide x 3 cm thick floorboard over the frame. nine0003

The deck is essentially a wooden platform, so there are many uses for it. You can make a deck that winds through the garden, a deck assembled from railway sleepers, steps, a deck-like bridge, a boardwalk around a tree, a series of decks in the form of terraces that go up a slope, an elevated platform near the water, etc.
