1. Make a garden party feel special with textiles

Why you can trust Real Homes Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

A really easy way to up your garden party game and make it feel like a really occasion is to simply lay down some lovely table linen. You want to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors and make the tables outside feel just as special as they would at a normal diner party. Layer a few table clothes on top of one another for a laid back, rustic feel and match your table decor to that country vibe with wooden chopping boards, Mason jars and small vases of fresh flowers.

2. Hang candles above a table

Love this idea! And imagine how special it would look at night, creating a lovely glow over the table. You could really easily DIY this structure using beams (or for a more rustic look use found wood) and then just hang candle holders at different heights to create a lovely atmosphere at the dinner table.

3. Decorate your tables with garden findings

The key to create lovely, country-style table scapes is lots of textures, so place jars of flowers sporadically thorough out the food and plates and trail garlands so they fall natural off the sides. Rather than buy your greenery, have a look around your garden for decor and DIY your floral decor. This will create a nice link between the table design and the surrounding garden too.

4. Give your party a camp out vibe

Even  for adults, there's something so exciting about camping, and that feeling of a party turning into a sleepover. So pop up a tent or tipi if you garden and surround it  with rugs, chairs and floor cushions to create a really vacation feel. Get a fire going too as it gets dark and hand out marshmallows as an after dinner treat.

5. Create a garden party theme

If you're decorating your garden for the party, choosing a theme will make it punchier visually. Wish you were throwing a garden party in the tropics somewhere? Why not recreate a luscious tropical atmosphere with colorful accessories and a piñata. Add some bright cushions and hanging decorations, and you're good to go...

6. Set up a shaded area

It always a good idea to create a shaded area at your garden party for people who don't like being in the sun for too long, or if  your guests want a shaded spot to relax away from the main event.  A parasol would do the job, but we are loving sail shades this summer, they are just so simple and stylish and add a bit of a beachy vibe to a garden.

7. Light up the garden for a night-time party

To make sure your garden party continues seamlessly into the evening, prepare with plenty of outdoor lighting. Mix and match different types, from tea lights to lanterns, for a really pretty, luminous effect.

8. Please a party crowd with fresh lemonade

Nothing screams 'garden party' like a lemonade dispenser. Plus it adds such a cute rustic feel to a garden party. You can pick them up really cheaply on Amazon and make your own lemonade really easily using just lemons, sugar and water.

9. Find a fire pit for cooler nights

(Image credit: Moda Furnishings + Sandra Baker (@the_idle_hands))

If you're throwing a garden party in autumn or winter, an open fire of some sort always helps to draw everyone together. Marshmallow toasting is one of the great pleasures of cold-weather partying, especially if there are children at the party.

10. Create an indoor feel with hanging lampshades

Give your garden party table a real indoor/outdoor feel by hanging actual lampshades above. You could just hang them from string to a tree and wind around some battery-powered fairy lights to create a more... rustic but equally lovely version of this beautiful set up.

11. Ensure your garden seating is super comfy

Comfy seating is a must in the garden, party or no – and it's crucial for keeping everyone happy into the evening. We say padded with plenty of cushions is the way to go.

If your seating is naturally hard, for example, a corner bench or metal set, get plenty of cushions and blankets to create a cozy atmosphere.

12. Create a party ambience with an outdoor speaker

Ultimate Ears UE Megablast

Want to really get the party started? You need music. And while you don't want to annoy all your neighbors with an overly loud sound, a tinny old speaker won't do, either. Go for a portable speaker that you can easily bring out into the garden and move it around should you need to. Then you just make sure you have a banging playlist ready to go!

13. Love garden party food? Build an outdoor kitchen

If you are seriously into your al fresco dining, then consider building an outdoor kitchen. This is a particularly worthwhile investment if you entertain frequently – imagine the time and effort saved by not having to carry endless dishes back and forth between your kitchen and garden.

14. Get an outdoor projector for garden movie nights

There's nothing like ending a successful party with a late-night film screening. Technically, for an outdoor cinema, all you really need is a sheet, or a white wall and an outdoor projector (if you're not sure what to go for, check out our guide to the best outdoor projectors ), but we think it's the extras that make it all the more special. Basically, that means string up A TON of fairy lights, the more the better. We love the look of festoon lights and you could also add some lanterns to create even more of a lovely glow. And if you are feeling really extra, bring out your duvet and hang up a net canopy to create an almost outdoor bedroom. Dreamy!

Make sure your garden furniture is extra comfy by adding plenty of cushions and roll out an outdoor rug to create an even more outdoor living room feel.

16. Create an outdoor living room

If you want to create a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere at your garden party, switch the tables for floor cushions, outdoor sofas and coffee tables. Add to that living room feel by adding plenty of throws and pop down a rug too. Be sure to avoid indoor furniture outside though – it's one of the worst patio decorating mistakes!

17. Find a great garden party dining set

For a complete garden party experience – think nice, long dinner, followed by a nice, long conversation – nothing beats a proper outdoor dining set. Set your expectations high: it should be well-built, spacious, and cater to all weathers. Oh, and, of course, it should be good-looking.

19. Minimise food prep with a cheese board

Don't fancy doing lots of cooking for your garden party? Especially if you'll be hosting in a small patio or on a balcony, big plates of food might not be practical. Instead, serve a chic cheese and charcuterie board that people can dip in and out of as they choose.

20. Go full rustic with low seating in a country garden

We admit that to recreate this garden idea in your garden you probably would need to live on a farm, but what could be more romantic than the idea of enjoying an evening with friends on some hay bales? If you don't live anywhere near any hay, try bean bag seating instead.

21.

22. Go boho and relaxed for an easygoing garden party

If you don't feel like hosting a sit-down dinner, but still want to make sure your guests are well-fed, go Scandinavian and create a buffet-style table with salads, sandwiches, and drinks. That way, you won't need to worry about everyone finishing eating at the same time.

23. Combine formal and rustic elements in your dining scheme

Garden design is all about mixing modern rustic and more contemporary styles at the moment, and the same goes for your garden party. Think combining rustic-style, linen napkins and cushions with more formal elements such as a candle holder and crystal glasses.

24. Be prepared for rain and shine

It doesn't matter where in the world you are, you can bet that, as soon as you set a date for a garden party, the weather misbehaves. So, we'd always advise preparing ahead for rain and shine. Gazebos are great, parasols look pretty and are forever useful and wind/sun sail shades are a quick fix. Whichever, just make sure there's enough shelter for all. Find more of the best garden parasols in our buyer's guide.

Birthday Ideas in kindergarten: how to spend a holiday?

Mom, it's my birthday tomorrow! May I go to kindergarten and celebrate with my friends?” - many children have been waiting for their personal day for a whole year, so that group mates would dance around him - the birthday man - too. So that at least for one day in kindergarten he becomes the most important, main and beloved member of the team. So that all games and gifts are only for him. So that he treats all his friends with delicious treats that my mother carefully bought, and even blows out the candles to the general applause. Celebrating a birthday in kindergarten is a special kind of fun! Let's think carefully together how to make sure that for the little birthday boy this holiday goes off with a bang and is remembered for a lifetime. nine0003

To organize a holiday in kindergarten, we need the help and support of educators. Each kindergarten has its own rules for holding celebrations. And parents, whatever one may say, will have to reckon with them. In some children's institutions, a birthday day is organized every month. All birthdays in March, April, May or any other month collectively celebrate the mood of the new year of their lives on one specially designated day. In other kindergartens, there is no such rule - then every week they drive a "loaf" in the group and congratulate the little man in chorus, who has become one more year older. If you are going to celebrate a birthday in a kindergarten, be sure to check this point with the teacher or supervisor. And do not forget to agree on the format of the treat. It will not be possible to bring a cake or a home-made pie to kindergarten. There is a rule - treats should be in individual packaging and with a clear written composition. Feel free to ask questions - it is better to discuss any organizational issues, from the script and timing to the date, music and guest list, in advance, and not on the day of the celebration. nine0003

Who spends a birthday in kindergarten?

The holiday and congratulations for birthdays in kindergarten are carried out by educators who are assigned to the group. They have pre-written ready-made scenarios for kids of different ages. Educators are well aware of the characteristics of the group, they know how to find an approach to each kid - all participants in the celebration will be comfortable, safe and easy. Sometimes mothers themselves want to hold an event for children. This point should be discussed separately with the head of the kindergarten. In both cases, it must be taken into account that the holiday will not be a large-scale and global celebration with a visiting circus, disco and entertainment from morning to evening. A holiday in kindergarten cannot last long, because the children and the teacher have a schedule, daily routine and compulsory classes. But even in an hour or two, you can create a festive atmosphere and surround the attention of the little hero of the occasion. Several games, contests, riddles and the obligatory “Loaf-loaf, choose whoever you want!” - this is the minimum that will cheer up the whole team, but will not give a reason to start walking on their heads and disrupting lessons. nine0003

And in order for the holiday to be 100% successful, you can and even need to invite animators to kindergarten! Unless, of course, the administration of the preschool educational institution has nothing against outside princesses, clowns and little mermaids in the garden. Every mother knows the same cherished cartoon and those very favorite characters that will definitely delight the little birthday boy. Just imagine: the baby opens his eyes after a sweet daytime sleep, makes sips and ... sees his beloved Fixies, the Paw Patrol in full force or the restless Masha with her bear! For joy, the hero of the occasion will jump to the ceiling, wake up the whole group and make a noise-gam-chatter. But that's what birthdays are for! Is it true? Kindergarten animators are always a great idea! Princesses, superheroes, transformers and other favorite characters from the Sea Show team are very fond of going to kindergarten with their entertainment programs. We know exactly how to entertain children of all ages. The Sea Show will bring a holiday with it to any kindergarten in Moscow and the Moscow Region, and, if necessary, to any other part of the planet. Giving children happiness is our mission on this planet! nine0003

How to prepare a child for a birthday celebration in kindergarten?

Most likely, no one will have to cook. A month before the onset of day X, the baby himself will begin to count the days and look forward to when, well, when he will also be congratulated, like Masha, Petya and Vova from his group. For very tiny kids, you can arrange a surprise holiday. And with children from the older group, you can organize a joint project "My best birthday". Sit down with a cup of cocoa with a notebook and a pen and together write down each item of the holiday in kindergarten - from treats to entertainment. What animators will come to congratulate? What will we serve our guests? What is the theme of the holiday? Dress? Hall decoration? Let the hero of the occasion organize his own holiday from and to. And who knows what this idea will develop into? Just don't get carried away preparing too long. If you start preparing six months before the proposed celebration, the interest of the birthday boy will be lost about halfway through. nine0003

What about gifts?

Will! Will definitely be! But symbolic. The leadership of the kindergarten, together with the parent committee, decide on their own the issue of gifts during the holidays in the kindergarten. Usually little birthday people bring home something small and useful:

  • constructor
  • mosaic
  • puzzle
  • art kit
  • stationery, which is never enough
  • nine0034

Why is it impossible to give in kindergarten that very big and cherished gift that the kid has been dreaming of for so long? Can! But only in this case, the teacher and parents run the risk of causing a collective roar of a group of dissenters in the amount of 25-30 people: “Why was Vova given a giant robot, and I was given a set of hairpins ?!” A long-awaited surprise for your birthday is best saved for a big family holiday. And in kindergarten, the main thing is not a gift, right? And attention!

What to prepare and bring for a birthday party in kindergarten

On X day or a couple of days before the birthday, prudent mothers should bring to kindergarten:

    • baby treats
    • cake for nannies and caregivers
    • balls or garlands for hall decoration
    • small gifts for kids
    • candles
    • smart suit for a birthday boy (And two is better! There were different cases)

As a treat to kindergarten, you can bring:

    • Favorite fruits are bananas, apples, pears.
    • Small sweets in individual packaging - muffins, waffles, cookies, gingerbread.
    • Natural juices in boxes.

Check with the parents or teacher in advance if the children in the group have any nutritional habits. Someone does not eat gluten, someone is absolutely not allowed sugar, someone is allergic to citrus fruits. All this must be taken into account when choosing treats for kindergarten for a birthday. You can just beautifully pack sweets and fruits and leave them in each baby's wardrobe. His parents will decide for themselves whether or not he can have a chocolate egg or orange juice. nine0003

Dress code for a holiday in kindergarten

What's a party without a fancy dress? Without a white shirt with a bow tie? The opportunity to be a princess is almost the most important reason that makes girls look forward to this day so much. Boys are a little less. Choose in advance, prepare and bring an outfit for the birthday girl to kindergarten. Better than two! If there is a very tasty borscht for lunch, then the crinolines may not resist!

    Bringing beauty to group

For the kids to wake up and squeal with delight, the teachers have a whole quiet hour to inflate and hang balloons throughout the group! Multi-colored balloons are the easiest and fastest way to create an atmosphere of celebration and fun. Balloon garlands can be ordered in advance and delivered by a specific time.

    Finishing touch

Stop stop stop! Don't leave quickly! It will be great if parents and / or artists help the teacher clean up the group after a fun celebration. And may this day bring everyone a sea of positive emotions and a whole locomotive of fun and joy! nine0003

Birthday in Kindergarten - Kindergarten and child

Children are very fond of joint holidays. But a birthday in kindergarten is a topic that causes a lot of controversy and doubt among parents and educators.

On the one hand, for a child, a birthday is an extremely important event, and the opportunity to celebrate it in the garden relieves the headache of how to gather the baby's friends at home. On the other hand, can all parents afford to organize something grandiose on this day? And if not, is it correct to single out one child? nine0003

We propose to consider the main options for how you can celebrate / mark a birthday in kindergarten, and listen to the opinions of those who have already had to deal with this issue. After all, in the end, the final decision is made by the parents anyway.

    Kindergarten birthday treats!

Kids will certainly be very happy if the birthday boy decides to treat everyone. It can be a treat at a festively set table, or just the distribution of "sweet pouches". The only point: there is a possibility that you will not be allowed to bring cake to kindergarten and pour soda into glasses. Although these “ingredients” of the holiday are easily replaceable: for juices in small bags, muffins and biscuits in individual packages. Fruits or beautifully decorated fruit desserts are irreplaceable on the children's birthday table. nine0003

Still, if you are convinced that a kindergarten birthday without a cake is not a birthday, go and talk to the kindergarten kitchen workers about this topic. After all, this ban stems solely from considerations of sanitary and hygienic safety. And in the kitchen, your cake will be cut into portions and served to the kids, or they will bake their own - by agreement, which will completely save you from the hassle. It is best to avoid cakes with buttercream.

The cake can be decorated with small candles and the kids will blow them out. nine0003

When arranging catering for a birthday in kindergarten, remember that kids don't like long feasts. For them, games, music, and other fun attributes are preferable. Therefore, it is better if the dishes are such that they can be eaten “in one sitting”, and then come to the table again.

    Fits:

    • Marshmallow, small meringues
    • Curd pudding
    • Sweets (preferably not chocolate): marmalade, jelly, wafer, caramel
    • Cookies, dry
    • Non-allergenic fruit skewers or fruit platter
    • Sandwiches, canapés, baskets, oddly designed or small pizzas
    • Natural juices or fruit drinks

In addition to treats, parents can also organize small inexpensive birthday gifts for children, because on a birthday in kindergarten, kids still do not quite understand why only one party has a holiday, everyone wants attention.

The birthday person can give “guests” a coloring book, a notepad, a sheet of stickers, a small toy (he can give away his entire collection of Kinder surprises), a set of wax crayons, and so on, or all the same sweets, only packed in bright bags or - if not too lazy to glue - cardboard boxes with the name of the birthday man. nine0003

Don't forget to treat the teachers at the kindergarten's birthday, too, because they won't take treats from the children's table. In many kindergartens, there is a tradition of giving teachers a cake.

Advice: Try to ensure that treats are distributed not by the educator and not by you, but that the birthday person takes an active part in this. The same is the process of inviting to the table.

Birthday in kindergarten is a decoration!

It would be nice if parents find time to arrive at the kindergarten early on their birthday and decorate the group (entrance, playground) in honor of their child. You do not need to devote a lot of time, money and effort to this: it is enough to indicate that today is not an ordinary day, but a holiday, and arouse interest in this event. It happens that it is enough to inflate a few balloons, hang spiral ribbons or foil stars. It is very good if you can make blanks at home with the birthday man. nine0003

Tip: If balloons or other interesting "things" are to be used as decorations - don't leave them hanging and deflated - have the children take them apart and play with them at the end of the day.

    Birthday in kindergarten - mood!

Birthday in kindergarten is a good occasion for games, contests and even shows. There are two paths to choose from here.

FIRST OPTION - PREPARE THE HOLIDAY PROGRAM INDEPENDENTLY (possibly: with the participation of a teacher or musical director - "by agreement of the parties"). Even if at first it seems intimidating, there is nothing complicated here: you just need to feel at home, taking the main initiative into your own hands. Recall popular and unpretentious children's games and contests: riddles, blowing soap bubbles, playing “tails” (catching up with ribbons behind the belt), “repeat” (repeat the words named by the leader with movements). nine0003

Attracting and keeping children's attention is not so difficult: the main thing is to allow yourself to sincerely tune in to the holiday: — Hello, kids! The cats came to you, Mura and Mur-Mur (take 2 soft toys). They came to congratulate the boy Pasha on his birthday. But they don't know anything about Pasha at all… Tell Mura what Pasha looks like… Tell Mur-Mur what kind of friend Pasha is…

The children are fascinated, and the birthday boy is in the center of attention. And do not strive for a too rich program: the kids get tired quickly. It is best to “balance” the holiday program with dances from 3-4 musical compositions. nine0003

SECOND OPTION - INVITE PROFESSIONALS TO THE BIRTHDAY AT THE KINDERGARTEN. Clowns, role-playing dolls, fairies come with their own ready-made program. And, perhaps, - and prizes. And, if they have rich experience, and the program is proven, then a flurry of emotions is provided. Never invite animators from holiday agencies “at random”: if there is no recommendation from friends, then come and study the portfolio, talk about what ideas the professionals have about your particular holiday. Be sure to discuss the duration of the event, the intensity of the games, the age of the kids in the group. Since not every character can be adequately perceived by the crumbs of the younger group: they can be frightened by a noisy company of incomprehensible creatures. Some are even afraid of Santa Claus. nine0003

Advice: Before making a decision about a birthday in kindergarten, be sure to consult with the teachers. Perhaps the garden has its own established traditions that are not customary to break. Perhaps there is a strong imbalance between the well-being of families, and the educator does not want this to be emphasized. Or maybe the teacher himself will be happy to offer some ideas or help: after all, who, if not he, knows all the children in the group better?

By the way, in some kindergartens there is a tradition to hold a "birthday" - this is a holiday with a "loaf", music and games, which is held about once a month - for all birthdays of the month. Then the need for individual birthdays "disappears". Perhaps in your garden there is (or may appear at your suggestion) a “birthday corner” that will have to be filled in: with photographs of the baby, his drawing, wishes-designations in the form of pictures. Children love to look at such bright corners. nine0003

…WHAT DO PARENTS AND STAFF SAY?

    Anastasia Rodkina, 28 years old:

    — I think that it would be necessary to please the kids even more if there was more money. And so - we usually bring a treat - sweets + some kind of fruit (tangerine, apple). Gifts are bought in advance so that they are the same for everyone: for example, a book and a balloon, a coloring book and a balloon, a notebook with a pen - it’s always useful . .. They dance around the name day, sometimes they raise it on a high chair if the older group (with the help of a teacher) ... But it could be call a clown to amuse the kids for at least 30-40 minutes ...

    Valentina Avramchik, 35 years old:

    — In terms of treats, of course, I would like to offer children better fruit – tasty, different. But young mothers are a category, as a rule, of poor people. And different fruits for a group of 25 people is not a cheap pleasure. Therefore, we just manage with sweets, a few things. After all, we still need to organize some kind of entertainment, all parents do this, we agreed on this: someone comes dressed as a fairy-tale character, someone brings their favorite game from home that everyone can play together, someone organized a small puppet show . I brought a large drawing paper from work, paints, and offered to draw a greeting card for everyone together. Someone simply brings music or a fairy tale on a disk. Well, it all depends on how busy the parents are. nine0003

    Veronika Sizova, 33 years old:

    — Mickey Mouse came to congratulate one of our boys, they ordered a clown for a girl, a couple of children invited their group after class to a children's cafe nearby, but not everyone went, because somehow it was After all, it was decided to get together and buy a good gift for these children, and besides, not all parents had time these evenings. There was a choice. Those who went loved it. There were later, however, requests from their own child, so that there would also be a clown in kindergarten for his birthday. But during a more detailed conversation, it turned out that the little one was impressed, first of all, by the drawing on faces during the festive program. We went and bought a special paint, came with him to the garden, and painted hearts and stars on everyone's cheeks in honor of Andryusha. The child was quite. nine0003

    Maria Yasnova, 28:

    — Just the other day we were celebrating a birthday in kindergarten. We bought all the kids apple juice and harmless Semper cookies. And as gifts for classmates - a small rainbow toy, as we had in childhood. Most of all, it seems to me that the birthday man himself was pleased with the gift.

Maria Andreevna, 54 years old, educator:

    — The Parents' Committee decides whether there will be gifts for kindergarten birthdays. If yes, then I advise everyone to be the same. On this day, in a group with children, we pay attention to the birthday person, we say congratulatory words: this allows us to develop the speech of each child. When the parents were not going for gifts, I suggest that the group give something to the birthday man: do it with pens, for example, this unites the team. The main thing: to create a mood for the child. A game is played for him, a song is sung, a poem is read - that's enough for imagination. You need to pay attention to a particular child - that's the goal. Kindergarten children do not need expensive gifts: they do not understand what is expensive and what is cheap, and, as a rule, they are not deprived of toys.
