2022 Entryway Tile Design Trends
Tile is an ideal choice for an entryway because it’s fashionable, sturdy and easy to clean. Make a smart decision and protect your home with materials like porcelain, ceramic and slate. Grey continues to be a popular color for home decor—soften the look with a grey wood-look tile that incorporates softer tones like taupe and beige that add warmth. Want to add an elegant feel? Use a combination of stone-look ceramic or porcelain for durability and real marble to elevate the whole space. If you want to enhance a neutral color, consider choosing a geometric pattern. Whether your space is a sprawling foyer or a small entryway, investing in the right tile design can add some flair that transforms your room.

What Type of Tile Works Best For Entryways & Hallways?
The first to-do item on your list of entryway tile ideas is choosing a floor tile that can (and will) withstand years of use. You want a tile that offers an unwavering style, of course, but it should also be one that can welcome your lifestyle with open arms–kids, guests, pets, dirt, and all life brings with the changing seasons. For all of these reasons and more, we highly recommend porcelain tile and marble tile. Here is a little about both and why we love them for entryway floors.
Porcelain Floor Tile
Porcelain tile is a solid and durable tile highly resistant to scratching, frost, and damage. It’s impervious to water and a sustainable building material that can be manipulated to look like wood or more expensive tile materials like marble, which is an attractive feature if natural marble tile is out of your budget. Porcelain tile is also extremely easy to clean and maintain, making it a top choice for hectic households.
No list of entryway tile ideas is complete without a few porcelain tile options. These hardy tiles are ideal for busy entryways requiring unwavering durability and one-of-a-kind style, all while mimicking the look of other floor materials, as seen here in this Spiga Olson Gris Wood Look Porcelain Tile.
Marble Floor Tile
Marble stone is a timeless building material that shines in natural beauty and durability. With no two marble tiles ever the same, it’s easy to create a truly unique look that won’t fade in style over the decades. As for durability, marble tile is a hardworking water-resistant stone that’s in it for the long haul.
It’s worth noting that marble tile can require more maintenance, especially in very busy households. Since marble tile can be stained, it’s best to protect marble floors with a quality marble sealant and avoid standing water whenever possible.
Approved for use on high traffic walls and floors, this Calacatta Gold large format hexagon marble tile shows off the natural beauty and rarity each marble stone can effortlessly add to your tiled entryway.
Choose What's True to You vs. What’s Trending
After choosing the best tile material for your space, it’s time to settle on a style. Regardless of which tile material you choose, picking a quality tile that speaks to your style and what you love most in home design will always make you happier in the end than going with what’s in vogue at the moment. By choosing a tile design that matches your authentic taste and style, you’ll have no regrets later down the road.
So, which style will it be? Let’s look at several tried-and-true entrance hall tile ideas to see what options make the best fit for your foyer.

When making your list of entryway or entrance hall tile ideas, it’s essential to focus on scale. Work planning
Floor and wall tile companies today supply the market with a wide range of products that can combine different colors and details already in ready-made sets. This greatly facilitates the task of the owners of the premises, who want to transform them with the help of cladding. As you know, the house begins with the front door, and its successful design creates comfort throughout the building.
The lion's share of the costs in the repair of the entrance is the replacement of tiles on the floor and walls. Tenants tend to change cladding less often and choose materials carefully to ensure they last long and hold up well. Not the last role is played by the desire to save money. The correct arrangement of the cladding elements will help in this, in which a minimum of trimmed parts remains.
When choosing a tile, you should calculate how many tiles you will need. The calculation is made based on the surface area and dimensions of the tile, multiplying the length of the tile by the width of the surface. On the Internet, you can find an online calculator that will accurately calculate the required amount of tiles.
The length and width of a tile is always indicated on its packaging. The distance for filling with grout, which will appear between the seams after laying, is also taken into account. If simple cladding is planned, when buying tiles, you need to add a reserve of 10 percent, and for complex options - 15 percent.
When drawing up a layout, you can stick to traditional views, using one color in the design, or you can combine several different colors and types of cladding. In all cases, the drawing must be drawn in advance or use ready-made schemes offered by stackers. After marking is made on the surface, you should calculate how much material is needed, purchase the necessary tools, as well as adhesive and grout.
Laying options
To see what a particular type of tile looks like, you can lay it out on the floor. The situation is more complicated with the walls - you will have to use the proposed design solution in the form of a drawing or drawing.
The most common tile is tile. It can be applied to both walls and floors. It is presented in a wide range of colors, different sizes and shapes - from square to diamond-shaped and is relatively inexpensive.
The tile design can imitate different materials - stone, wood, leather, parquet. Having laid it on the floor, with the naked eye at first glance it will be difficult to determine that instead of a parquet flooring it is ceramic.
Slightly higher in price and better quality - porcelain tiles. It can also be produced under a board or a tree, and it looks so natural that even the corresponding texture is transmitted to the touch (it is possible to distinguish wood-like tiles from natural wood only by temperature).
The most common types of tile layout in an apartment building:
Classic
Usually square tiles are used, they are laid in order in each row. This method of cladding requires maximum accuracy so that the marking of the seams horizontally and vertically is uniform.
Rhombus
Each tile is laid at a 45 degree angle, diagonally. Masonry is used both on the floor and on the walls. This is an interesting (visually expands the room), but a difficult design decision that requires preliminary marking. In the work on the cladding, a central axis is distinguished, along which they are guided. In laying use square fragments. Tiled corners must exactly match the marked lines. In the process of work, trimming of elements and a lot of triangular waste is inevitable. It is better to choose a plain tile, as the “patterned” one requires precise and careful joining.
Offset (spaced)
Each row is moved forward ½ tile because the middle of the tile is aligned with the vertical seam of the nearest row. The scheme resembles bricklaying and is easy to implement. Use both square and rectangular tiles. It is preferable to do vertical masonry, with the help of which the effect of lengthening the space is created. Laying horizontally visually expands the entrance. Masters need to pre-cut the elements, because several rows will begin with a half tile.
Herringbone
When the narrow side of the tile meets the wide side, forming a right angle. This scheme is used for floor cladding, because it resembles parquet. The Christmas tree layout is single, double and triple, when the appropriate number of elements is used in the formation of a row. However, each option is different.
Modular
Used on both walls and floors. It is a combination of several models differing in size. Lay it out strictly according to the scheme.
Fragmentary
Emphasis is placed on bright details - they are usually placed as decorative elements on the general background. Sometimes they even cut out patterns or original figures from tiles that decorate the center of the composition.
Visual effects
Using a variety of laying variations, you can depict drawings, panels, mosaics, geometric patterns on the surface. When alternating multi-colored materials laid with the basic method or diagonally, a “chessboard” appears. It is not recommended to use a diagonal layout on the floor, as this will give the illusion of curvature.
The front door can be divided by lines of contrasting colors, tiles can be laid out in the form of a patterned carpet, ornament, kaleidoscope. Many manufacturers produce sets of materials with already attached diagrams, according to which it is easy to lay out an intricate drawing.

In conclusion
Applying different types of tile layout in the house, you can be sure that there is no second such tile in the house. The original design of the cladding turns the room into unique panels and paintings that adorn gray everyday life.
Attention :: Foundation for the Preservation of Historical Heritage
We told you that in Moscow, the historical decoration of the entrance of the house on Baumanskaya Street is in danger of major repairs. The author of the Hidden Moscow blog, Eric Shakhnazaryan, together with several residents of the house and local historians, are trying to protect the interiors of the entrance. In support of this idea, in June we created visualizations of what the entrance might look like after a gentle renovation while preserving elements of the pre-revolutionary interior.
This is what a staircase might look like after careful renovation
One of the hot topics at the Baumanskaya entrance was the preservation of historical floor tiles. The overhaul fund was going to replace pre-revolutionary tiles with modern "toilet" porcelain tiles.
The vestibule tiles were in particular danger. A crack went through the whole room, which indicates the problems of the subfloor: corrosion of the beam or subsidence of the ceiling. This is a typical problem for the preservation of ground floor tiles in most Russian cities.
In such cases, the floor tiles must be dismantled by an experienced craftsman with maximum preservation of all elements. After that, the base of the floor is repaired, and the tile cleaned from the old glue is returned to its place and completed.
Representatives of the overhaul fund decided to go the other way. They conducted an examination indicating the Soviet origin of the floor tiles. Probably, with this conclusion, the officials intended to remove the issue of its preservation.
Source: hidden_moscow
Then the activists turned to an international expert, doctor of art history, author of books on the history of tiles, a member of the Society for the Protection of Ceramics Mario Back. He confirmed that the pattern of the tiles matched the catalogs of the Otto Kaufmann factory in Niedersedlitz, Germany.
Sheet from the catalog of the Otto Kauffmann factory
According to the expert, the tiles were produced before the First World War. Mario Back also noted that he finds such a surface striking and still attractive. The specialist expressed the hope that the historical tiles could be preserved and that they are much more resistant to wear and tear than modern products.
Nevertheless, the dismantling of this tile began yesterday.
Of course, during the removal of the historical cover, the hallmarks of Otto Kauffmann became visible. This confirmed the opinion of activists and an international expert about the pre-revolutionary origin of this ceramics. And the expertise of the overhaul fund turned out to be unreliable.
For the urgent start of the floor demolition work, the officials drew up a separate paper outside of the main overhaul documents.
