Decorating with pine cones for christmas

Decorating With Pinecones At Christmas

Pinecones are Christmas decorating gold. Here are 8 ways and lots of ideas to pinecones in your Christmas decor.

Let’s talk about decorating with pinecones at Christmas. It would be almost impossible to decorate our home for Christmas if it weren’t for these funny little conical naturals! They are often behind the decorating scene helping to create Christmas magic. Let’s decorate with lots of pinecones this year!

Decorating with pinecones is probably the easiest, no-brainer way to go during the holidays!

I’ve collected pinecones for years! And honestly, they are the workhorse of so many of my arrangements and other Christmas decorations!

Pinecones come in all shapes and sizes! So you can find the perfect pinecone to decorate with.

Here are 6 ways to work glorious pinecones into your Christmas decor too!

Instead of filling up the bottom of an arrangement with precious decorations like greens, ornaments, or other embellishments why not use pinecones.

They take up lots of space! Just put pretty things on top of them! I use this tip for so many things I arrange!

I keep a big stash of pinecones that are not so perfect to use in the bottom of arrangements.

Isn’t this a cute and sassy Christmas arrangement?

Guess what I used to fill up some of the space between the bowl and the greens!

Yup! Pinecones!

CHRISTMAS TREES AND DECORATING WITH PINECONES

Pinecones and Christmas trees are a true match! Actually, that’s where we get pinecones from. So why not offer them back to your tree and use them instead of ornaments.

They add so much texture!

Use different pinecones and turn some of them so their bottoms face out. The bottom side of a pinecone is so attractive!

Pinecones are cheap or free and so pretty! What could be better than cheap or free and pretty!

Use them in your tree!

See HOW TO DECORATE A TABLETOP TREE HERE.

USE THEM WITH GREENS

I just need to say it again, greens and pinecones are a fabulous pair. So combine them liberally!

I love to use snippets of greens (mostly faux) with pinecones.

The pinecones in the white ceramic basket above are scented! It is so easy to scent pinecones to smell like Christmas. So so easy! See HOW TO MAKE SCENTED PINECONES.

Here’s another way to use greens and pinecones…

Put a candle in a pretty shallow bowl and arrange greens and pinecones around it! An instant centerpiece for a table!

It’s just so easy to use greens and pinecones to make something Christmassy!

ADD PINECONES TO A CHRISTMAS TABLE

I love to create a pretty Thanksgiving and Christmas table! And scattering pinecones across a table makes it look so festive. They add a natural touch to a table!

One of my favorite things to do is to add one very pretty pinecone to each place setting! The tablescape above has a woodland theme and pinecones work so well with a tablescape like this one.

See this A TARTAN TABLESCAPE HERE.

And see how pretty Christmas greens look with little frosty pinecones in this tablescape you can see HERE. The big wicker tray becomes a wonderful base for the table vignette.

USE PINECONES AS THE STAR OF YOUR CHRISTMAS ARRANGEMENT

Pinecones can also be the star of a Christmas arrangement! They don’t always need to work in a supportive way!

Fill a basket or bowl with the prettiest pinecones and a couple of other embellishments like a wood bead garland and some sparkly greenery and voila, a gorgeous arrangement!

Here are other things you can add to this arrangement…

ADD PINECONES TO YOUR MANTEL

Pinecones are one of those natural materials that can decorate almost anything at Christmastime.

The mantel is the perfect place to scatter them. Use different sizes and colors and arrange some standing up and some grouped laying down and remember to show some of the stem ends of those prettiest pinecones.

If you use a garland or swag made of greens on your mantel wire pinecones to the greens. This adds such a pretty natural look.

The mantel above does not have pinecones scattered across it but the big ginger jar vase has one stunning frosted pinecone that add a bit of depth to the arrangement. Sometimes one big, beautiful pinecones is all you need.

Another sweet way to add pinecones to the fireplace is to string them on twine to create a garland!

PUT PINECONES ON A WREATH

I love the look of pinecones on a wreath! Again, they are such great fillers!

Here’s a little trick. Pinecones are dark and they can look a bit dark on a wreath. So add something light and/or bright colored to the wreath like white berries, or white stars or big silver jingle bells or a pretty bow.

Snow covered pinecones would look nice on a wreath and so would fairy lights!

I used a wreath with pinecones as a centerpiece on my kitchen table. So pretty, right?

See how easy it is to turn a WREATH INTO A PRETTY CENTERPIECE HERE.

I’ve never made an all pinecone wreath, so this is the year! I think I’ll wire the pinecones to a metal wreath form and then hot glue them to one another since I want to put the wreath on the front door so it needs to be sturdy. It’s under a covered front porch but we do get a bit of wind.

ADD PINECONES WHEN YOUR DECOR JUST NEED A LITTLE SOMETHING MORE

When you just need “a littlesomething more” think about adding pinecones to your Christmas decor!

You can see why pinecones are my go-to add ins?

PAINT, FLOCK OR BLEACH PINECONES

To create a different look for pinecones why not try painting them or bleaching them? Or flocking them or frosting them? Here are a few easy tutorials for enhancing the look of the humble sweet pinecone!

You can either hand paint the ends of the scales or the whole pinecone with acrylic paint. If you like them totally covered you can also dip them in a container of diluted chalk, acrylic, or house paint. Hang them upside down to let them completely dry.

To create flocking on pinecones paint the tip of each scale with Mod Podge or Elmer’s glue and then liberally sprinkle them with faux snow.

To create a frosted pinecone look paint the ends of the pinecone scales with Mod Podge or Elmer’s glue and dip them in Epson salt or glitter.

You can also gild the tips of pinecones for an elegant look.

And you might also like to bleach pinecones! They turn a beautiful blond color that is natural looking and so striking. See how to Bleach Pinecones here.
