Shower curtain ideas
We’ve sourced 10 shower curtain ideas that will not only do the job they're designed for, but will add texture and color to your walk-in shower ideas.

‘Minimalism is useful for your shower and wet rooms in terms of keeping the space fresh, clean, and tidy. As we’re focusing on self-care, mindfulness, and being more kind to ourselves, however, incorporating some luxury and fun in this domestic epicentre is well overdue,’ says color expert, Annie Sloan.
Frills and ruffles are back on trend as we hanker after nostalgic decorative shower room ideas and bathroom trends. ‘Adding a luxurious frill, a sumptuous swag of beautiful fabric will bring joy and color and make the space feel more indulgent, secluded, and spiritually restorative – without needing to get the builders in.'
2. Use a shower curtain for privacy
(Image credit: D+D Home and Armelle Habib Photography)
Not only does this design create an ethereal feel, it also provides privacy from the window (that has no window treatments whatsoever) and does its job as a shower curtain.
It adds fluidity to the overall modern bathroom scheme too, the rest of it is quite structured – from the herringbone floor and wall tiles to the angular lines of the basin unit, all within a pretty long and narrow space.
3. Introduce a nautical element for monochromatic scheme
Use a shower curtain to add a subtle softness, as shown here, in this tailored Maestri Studio designed bathroom.
The rest of the traditional bathroom has a lot of straight lines – from the rectangular basin and square wall tiles to the hexagonal floor and square shower rail. The shower curtain is the perfect antidote to a structured space – and it works well to create a contrast whilst adding a nautical element.
4. Instil classic good looks in a traditional setting
(Image credit: Chantel Elshout Studio/Paul Craig)
Reminiscent of a Victorian bathroom, this timeless look offers everything from this bygone era. The shower curtains are the perfect length for the bath. Plus, the white fabric beautifully links the rich green wall with the painted bath.
We also recommend playing up to the symmetrical element when choosing a shower or designing a wet room. Symmetry creates balance and a feeling of calm when used in interior design – and while it is wonderfully elegant in large rooms, it can also create a feeling of enhanced space in smaller rooms, and those that are very busy, such as bathrooms, too.
5. Use a shower curtain to frame a bathing area
Shower curtains can essentially be a normal pair of curtains depending on the space. In this farmhouse style bathroom, which is in the eaves of the house, this gathered pair look charming. Not only is it rustic and charming, they offer a cozy sanctuary in which to have a bath in – and there’s enough height to stand up and use the shower too.
Minimalist color scheme like creams, whites and soft browns are best to achieve the farmhouse bathroom style but don’t be afraid to experiment with rich greens and blues, which can add character to you space.
6. Combine vintage with contemporary
(Image credit: Future / Graham Atkins-Hughes)
Combine modern and vintage elements in your wet room for an eclectic look that truly sings out. Forgo the need for tradition, and embark on creating an aesthetic that works for you. Here, the circular design contrasts beautifully against the straight lines of the space, and the chrome works splendidly with the marble bathroom floor tiles.
7. Match it to the rest of your scheme
Unlike bathroom paint ideas, re-tiling a bathroom can be costly and a hassle you won't want to have to repeat often, so it's important to choose a design that you won't tire of too soon and will last you for years to come. Once you have chosen the perfect design, why invest in a shower curtain to match? The shower curtain picks up the colors and adds an illustrative design to the rest of the scheme.
8. Evoke a sense of grandeur in a modern bathroom
Thanks to the desire to create a sanctuary at home, the bathroom has become a retreat, a private oasis to help restore mental wellbeing. With this comes a move away from clinical style. For maximum impact, invest in a shower curtain that is very bit as decadent as the owner.
Choosing a shower curtain is one of the few times you can go as bold as you like – and we dare you to do just that. Shower curtains can be changed out in minutes, unlike bathroom wallpaper or tiles. With that in mind, the possibilities are limitless.
9. Play with pattern
From wood finishes to tropical patterns, natural beauty has long been a strong interiors trend, but animal prints in particular have found new popularity in recent years. Fierce and exotic, big cats are the most glamorous creatures in the animal kingdom, so no wonder we're adopting their spots and stripes this season.
Leaping into homeware too, there’s a touch of the feline on everything from furniture to flooring, but consider taking it to your shower curtain for a look that can be easily changed with each trend.
This bold hue is often considered a daring choice for interiors, but used creatively it can introduce a welcome burst of energy and flamboyance. In this bathroom color scheme, pale aqua makes a wonderful backdrop for vibrant accents of red-and-white that have been given a light-hearted, theatrical note using stripes on the shower curtain.
How can I make my shower curtain look good?
Your shower curtain needs to fit in with the rest of your scheme, so it enhances it, rather than distracts. It's a misconception that it needs to be made from thin plastic these days, you can use linen, cotton or a thin voile and it will give the same results. If you scheme is plain then choose a design that has a print or texture on it so it becomes a statement piece. At the opposite end of the scale, for a bathroom that is 'busy' it can be subtle and elegant.
What can you use instead of shower curtain?
If we haven't managed to convince you that shower curtains can be fabulous, then other options include glass doors – they don't offer privacy, but do keep the spray from the shower in one place. Some have bypass doors which work brilliantly in small bathrooms or they could have hinges if your space is larger.

In most bathrooms, the ability to get ready for your day and have enough space to move around can often be a challenge. Your bathtub and shower area can often be an area that is forgotten when considering space saving, and utilizing a shower curtain can save valuable space.
Shower curtains are versatile, can change with your decor, and don’t require a lot of space to open and close a shower door. If you have been trying to find more space and make your bathroom look larger, consider a shower curtain with these helpful ideas.
1. Use Shower Curtains to Add Fashion
View in galleryShower curtains have come a long way in home decorRemember when shower curtains weren’t fashionable and they only came in a few colors and styles? What was once associated with college dorms and small apartments have now become fashionable and attractive. Depending on your bathroom decor a ruffled fabric will work nicely with your romantic-inspired bathroom or a high contrast colored variety will match the rest of your sleek and modern bathroom nicely. Shower curtains can be pulled back to add visual space to your bathroom interiors and pep up your interior’s styling.
2. Use Shower Curtains to Increase Your Bathroom Size
View in galleryShower curtains can enhance any bathroomWho doesn’t need more space in their bathroom? Shower curtains are a great option for bathrooms that don’t want to install glass enclosure doors or don’t have enough room for the swing of the door. Many shower curtains install on low profile tracks on the ceiling to enable the curtain to stay open while making your bathroom feel larger. Also, consider adding a valance or hang a decorative fabric for a formal approach to your bathtub/shower area. These curtains can also have a liner placed behind the fabric curtain to ensure water doesn’t damage the valance and decorative curtain.
3. Use Shower Curtains to Add Drama

Consider draping fabric from the ceiling to add softness to a hard ceramic tile or boring bathtub/ shower area. A dramatic bathroom shower curtain is perfect for a guest bathroom or even a master bathroom that needs a dramatic, more grown-up feeling, eye-catching focal point. Use decorative sheets, fabrics, and even window treatment material to beautify your shower area. Hang fabric from the ceiling to add visual height and make your bathroom look and feel larger. Add colorful wallpaper, and decorative bath accessories to complement your bathroom shower curtain. Think of your shower as a window wall and you will be surprised at the creative possibilities.

4. Get an Extra Long Floor to Ceiling Shower Curtain

Taking shower curtains all the way from the ceiling to the floor is a great way to make your bathroom seem bigger. It doesn’t matter which pattern or print you use for your shower curtain, using an extra long shower curtain adds drama and impact to your bathroom design. If you’re getting a single-color shower curtain, try to stick with light shades to keep things from looking cramped. Mount curtain rods close to the floor and choose shower curtains long enough to puddle on the floor for a sophisticated look. (via Yellow Brick Home)
5. Buy a Patchwork Shower Curtain for a Big Look
View in gallery
Keeping patterns and prints large on your shower curtain can help keep the shower curtain from making your bathroom look small. Just because you’re trying to make the bathroom look larger doesn’t mean that you have to keep it white. Keeping the bathroom in neutral shades may make it look larger, but it can make it look plain, too. This do-it-yourself patchwork shower curtain gives your bathroom design an eclectic, bohemian look. The great part is you can modify the fabrics in the design to match any color scheme you want to use. (via Sew Can She)
6. Match the Shower Curtain to the Walls
View in gallery
Matching the color of your shower curtain to the walls can help give your entire bathroom a unified look. Without any color changes to break up the space, your bathroom will look like one large whole instead of many fragmented elements. Keeping the shower curtain the same color as the walls allows you to include a print or pattern without breaking up the look of the space too much. Sticking with a vertical pattern can help accentuate high ceilings. (via Fabric.com)
7. Go with a White on White Shower Curtain
View in gallery
Sticking with white is one of the most popular ways of making a room look larger than it actually is, and it’s a popular color in bathrooms because it makes the room look sanitary. White is also the most reflective color that you can use in an interior design, meaning any artificial or natural lighting that hits it will naturally be bounced around the room to give it a light and airy feel. Choosing a shower curtain with a small accent trim like this curtain from Room for Tuesday lets you go with a white-on-white look while still adding a soft touch to break up the space. (via Room for Tuesday)
8. Use All Caps to Make a Shower Curtain Statement
View in gallery
If you want to keep your bathroom looking big, one way to make a statement is to choose a shower curtain with a big typeface of a funny or inspiring quote. Impact font keeps this look big and bold. Using a graphic font for your shower curtain focal point instead of a pattern makes your shower curtain look whimsical and contemporary. This statement shower curtain from A Beautiful Mess will make you laugh in the morning no matter how sleepy you are. (via A Beautiful Mess)
9. Go with Large Horizontal Colorblock Stripes Shower Curtain
View in gallery
Vertical patterns make your bathroom look taller, but large horizontal stripes are a good way to make your bathroom look wider. If you want your bathroom to look colorful without looking small, the key is to keep each section of the color large so it doesn’t break up the look of the room too much. Bright tropical colors are a good way to set off a white background in the bathroom, too.
10. Add A Textured Shower Curtain, Not Color
View in gallery
To keep a monochromatic white bathroom interesting, be sure to add some texture to your shower curtain for a more airy and romantic feel. Frilly ruffles are a great addition to a semi-sheer shower curtain to make you feel like you’re taking a soaking bath on top of a cloud. (via Create/Enjoy)
11. Use A See-Through Print Shower Curtain
View in gallery
For small bathroom spaces, sometimes the best way to keep a shower curtain from making your bathroom look cramped is to use one that’s see-through. Pair a transparent shower curtain material with a fun graphical print to help keep it from feeling like you’re taking a shower in plastic wrap. (via A Beautiful Mess)
12. Include a Dark Outline on a Light Shower Curtain
View in gallery
Pairing a white shower curtain with a white wall can make the room look bigger, but it can also wash everything out and make it hard for the eye to focus on any focal point in the room. To avoid this, choose a white shower curtain with a dark border outline or trim. This helps set the shower curtain out visually from other light-colored items in the room and gives you an accent color that you can use in other areas. You can also incorporate this dark trim color in bathroom rugs or countertop accessories to help unify the look into one large cohesive space. (via Cypress Street Home)
13. Go with an Iridescent Shower Curtain Look
View in gallery
Along with using white to help reflect light in the bathroom to make it look larger, you can also look at reflective surfaces. Choose an iridescent material or any other reflective material such as sequels or holographic sparkles to bounce light around the room and create the optical illusion that it’s bigger than it is. Iridescence is a great way to add just a little touch of color to an otherwise light-colored or neutral bathroom. (via POPSUGAR)
14. Use An Ombre Shower Curtain to Lead the Eye
View in gallery
If you’ve got a small bathroom, you’ll have to use some visual tricks to make the room appear larger. Ombre is a design technique that starts with one dark end of a gradient and gradually lightens. The eye is drawn to the lightest lights and the darkest darks in the room, so having both on the shower curtain at opposite ends helps draw the eye upward, making the room feel spacious. Ombre is also a good way to include some darker colors without them being overwhelming. (via Wonderful DIY)
15. Use an Accent Color in Your Shower Curtain
View in gallery
Keeping your bathroom mostly pale or white can help keep the room from feeling claustrophobic, but it doesn’t exactly give you much to work with in terms of putting your own personal touch on the space. Install a DIY indigo-dyed shower curtain to act as your accent wall or focal point in the room. This allows you to add a bold custom color without overwhelming the space. (via In Color Order)
16. Stencil a Geometric Design on Your Shower Curtain
View in gallery
If you’re going to go with a pattern on your shower curtain, the best way to help the pattern make the room look larger instead of smaller is to keep it geometric. Geometric designs let you go with a slightly smaller pattern while still giving the room an organized look. Combined with a neutral wall, this stenciled look can help your room feel contemporary and spacious. (via Cutting Edge Stencils)
17. Use Colorful Patterned Shower Curtains to Brighten Dark Bathrooms
View in gallery
A dark color palette in your bathroom can make the room look closed-in and small. Help make it look bigger with a bright pop of color by incorporating dramatic, colorful prints. These types of shower curtains are especially helpful in decorating alcoved tubs and shadowy areas that might seem dim or cheerless otherwise. (via Home Design Lover)
18. Go with a Clear Shower Curtain
View in gallery
If you’ve got a truly tiny bathroom, the best way to make it look bigger is to make the shower curtain completely transparent. This allows you to see into the shower and all the way from one end of the room to the other for the maximum visual space possible. (via Apartment Therapy)
19. Use a Botanical Print to Bring the Outdoors In
View in gallery
Since they remind visitors of the great outdoors, botanical prints are an intriguing way to make a room feel bigger while also making it feel cozier at the same time. Botanical prints come in a wide variety of different aesthetics to fit your bathroom no matter how the rest of your home is decorated. (via DIY Network)
20. Keep Graphic Designs on Shower Curtains Big and Simple
View in gallery
Using solid-colored shower curtains is the easiest way to keep the shower curtain from making the bathroom feel small, but a plain shower curtain in any color can be boring. If you’re planning on using a graphic design, be sure to use a large image to help keep the room from looking cluttered. Check out this Swiss cross shower curtain design from The Wicker House for an example of how to pull this minimalist look off. (via The Wicker House)
They take up a lot of visual space and are often the focal point in the bathroom, so picking out the right shower curtain is important if you’re trying to make your bathroom look larger. Choosing light shades, bright colors, transparent materials, and organized prints can help keep your shower curtain from cramping your style. Shower curtains have gotten a bad reputation in the past for being utilitarian, boring, and ugly. Instead of thinking of the past with shower curtain reputations, use these helpful ideas to inspire your bathroom. Go ahead, get more space in your bathroom with these ideas and see how your bathroom will instantly look better!

Thin, shapeless oilcloth that sticks to the body, flashy, colorful prints, edges yellowed from water and soap - until now, many people imagine this picture when they hear the phrase "bath curtain". But things are no longer the same: in recent years, the shower curtain has undergone a real evolution and is no longer considered a dubious accessory. Modern models look stylish, they are easy to fit into almost any project. There is an alternative - frame structures. Let's talk about it.

It performs several tasks at once. The main ones can be formulated as follows.
- Protection. The main task is to protect the floor, furniture, textiles, plumbing and other surfaces and objects in the room from water and soap.
- Zoning. This is especially important for large and combined bathrooms. The curtain allows you to separate the bathing area, making it more private.
- Decoration. A curtain or a screen can hide the flaws of the room, complement the overall style or become an accent, complete the interior, add coziness.
Today there really is plenty to choose from. But first you have to decide which bath curtains will be better in your case: soft, frameless, or rigid, framed.

These are well-known PVC or textile sheets. They have their own advantages.
- Simple, fast assembly. It is enough to fix the cornice and hang the canvas. No special knowledge or skills are required. The whole procedure will take several minutes.
- Large selection. Whatever colors, patterns and patterns you like - in ordinary and online stores you can find a model that suits your interior.
- Price. There are products for every wallet: inexpensive, medium category and quite expensive.
- Easy to change if the curtain gets tired over time.
- Suitable for bathtubs of all sizes and shapes. For example, you can choose a corner bath screen if the plumbing is adjacent to the wall with only one end or has a rounded shape.

Rigid structures

These are glass or plastic barriers. They are chosen by those for whom the following advantages are important.
- Fully sealed. Glass or plastic screen reliably protects against splashes.
- Long service life. Such screens can be used for many years, it is enough just to clean them regularly and monitor the health of the mechanisms.
- Space saving. This is especially true in small bathrooms. Glass or plastic fencing does not take up much space, does not visually hide the space and does not darken.
- Style. If you can make a mistake with the choice of color and texture of the textile model and spoil the interior, then the glass one will be appropriate almost always.
There are also disadvantages: more complicated installation, high price.

In stores, you can still find thin curtains that are inconvenient to use. But there are others, better and more elegant, which fit perfectly into modern interiors. So, what are curtains made of today?
Vinyl
Quite a large category of products. This includes common PVC, that is, polyvinyl chloride. It is thin PVC sheets that often stick. Therefore, it is better to choose denser options.
Social networks of design studio Lyubov Kopeikina
Let's list all options.
- PVC is plastic, thick oilcloth. Over time, a yellowish coating from soap and shower gels can form on it. In the machine, such fabrics are not washed. You can try to scrub the stains with a sponge.
- EVA, ethylene vinyl acetate, is another vinyl material, but unlike PVC, it does not contain chlorine and is considered more environmentally friendly. At the same time, it differs in density, strength, elasticity.
- PEVA or polyethylene vinyl acetate. It also does not contain chlorine and is considered environmentally friendly. Slightly less dense than EVA. Both EVA and PEVA are also not recommended for machine washing.
All three versions are absolutely waterproof.

Polyester
100% synthetic material. Polyester threads are obtained from petroleum products. This fabric is considered one of the most durable and wear-resistant, which does not prevent it from being very light and drying quickly. It turns out an almost ideal set of characteristics for textiles in the wet zone.
Social networks of designer Maya Valit
What are polyester bath screens? There are two options: from pure polyester and with the addition of natural fibers.
Pure polyester curtains don't look like oilcloth. Due to the peculiarities of the fabric, they fall off in beautiful even folds and do not stick. Polyester is usually further treated with a water-repellent impregnation, and it becomes completely waterproof. Curtains made of this material can be washed, not only by hand, but also in a typewriter. The main thing is to follow the temperature recommendations.
Second option: mixed fabric. For example, polyester + linen or polyester + cotton. A ratio of 90 × 10 is usually maintained, where 90% are artificial fibers and 10% are natural. Such canvases look even more elegant and noble. To cope with the main task, splash protection, special impregnation allows them. Items can be machine washed. Perhaps their only drawback is their rather high price.

Choose cotton, linen or bamboo for sewing. The fabric must be treated with water-repellent impregnation and antibacterial to avoid the appearance of mold and fungus. Usually they resort to additional protection: on the inside they hang a thin white or transparent canvas made of vinyl or polyester, and on the outside - a decorative one made of natural fabric. In this case, the design is very similar to window decor: a combination of tulle and thick curtains.
Of course, this option is the most expensive. But it allows you to create interesting visual solutions. And it is often chosen by designers.

6 budget ways to transform your bathroom that you have not thought about yet
Hanging a curtain in the bathroom is a matter of minutes. The only thing you need is a suitable cornice and fasteners.

Bathroom cornices
Available in the following shapes:
- Straight. These are suitable for a standard straight bath, surrounded by walls on three sides.
- Arc-shaped. Used for corner and rounded bathtubs.
- Rectangular. Suitable if the bath is adjacent to only one wall and you need to protect the other three sides.
- L-shaped or angled. For bathtubs that are adjacent to two walls, and one end and one long side remain free.
- There are models in the form of an oval and a circle, which are attached not only to the walls, but also to the ceiling. They are used either for free-standing bowls or when they want to create a certain style in the room.

Cornices today are made from a variety of materials. Among them: plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, steel - plain or in chrome color.
Curtain holders

Let's single out several types.
- Hooks are the easiest option. And inexpensive. At the same time, it is very convenient to use. The curtain can be hung or replaced without removing the curtain rod.
- Eyelets - cutouts in the material, reinforced with metal plates. Curtains with such fastening are more expensive. They are not so easy to take off or put on: you have to dismantle the cornice.
- Rings. They are strung on a cornice, and the canvas itself is suspended from the rings with the help of loops. You can replace the curtain without removing the cornice.
- Hinges. This type of fastening is more likely to be found on a custom-made curtain. Looks even more decorative. But it can complicate the movement of the curtain. In addition, to replace it, the eaves will have to be removed.

If you are afraid of making a mistake, a plain white matte textile curtain will be a win-win choice in most cases. Or, alternatively, you can use a completely transparent, almost invisible canvas.
If you are ready for experiments, abstract prints and geometric patterns, floral ornaments are in trend. But large colorful images of the underwater world or tropical landscapes are unlikely to add style to the interior.

Rigid structures are more like screens. But their main function is the same - splash protection.
Social networks of designer Maya Valit
Based on material
Fences are made of glass or plastic on a metal frame.
- Tempered glass is used, resistant to mechanical damage. Manufacturers also cover it with a special film so that in the event of a strong blow, it does not shatter into thousands of fragments, but only crack. Glass can be transparent or frosted. Such structures are completely sealed, durable. Outwardly combine simplicity and elegance. They are the ones that interior designers like to use in their projects. But glass bathroom curtains are the most expensive.
- Plastic models are much cheaper. They are also waterproof, durable and with proper care will last for years. However, they lose their attractive appearance faster, they can change color due to water and soap. Washing them is much more difficult, not all cleaning products are suitable.
By type of opening
Rigid models also differ in the opening mechanism.
- Stationary screens - fixed design. It is constantly in one place and covers only the shower area.
- Sliding - the doors open like a compartment. This model allows you to close the entire bath. This saves space.
- Swing. Not suitable for every room. In a small space, opening doors like this can be inconvenient.
- Folding (or "accordion"). Another option for narrow small bathrooms. When folded, it does not take up much space.
