Design of a room with black walls, design ideas
Color plays an important and often decisive role in the perception of the interior, this statement is especially true when it comes to dark shades. If the walls of the room are painted black, then most likely they will dominate the interior. Therefore, one should not take this color lightly and think over the design concept in advance. In this article, we will try to give all possible examples of the competent use of black walls in the interior and describe special design techniques.
Black possibilities:
- goes with all colors, although proportions are important, not all of them are appropriate;
- helps with contrasts enhances the impression of color differences when combined with bright accents;
- saturated , the interior will be perceived as capacious and filled, not empty;
- masks uneven walls or allows you to hide unwanted areas of the interior;
- emphasizes the status and luxury of the interior , especially in combination with expensive decor items;
- helps in zoning due to the fact that it emphasizes the borders of color transitions most clearly .
We will illustrate all these possibilities of color further on specific examples.

Many argue that black visually narrows the space and is not acceptable in small rooms. This statement is very doubtful, if not stupid, since it is impossible to judge the visual volume of a room by taking only one color out of context. Each specific interior should be approached individually, taking into account the entire color palette, furniture and decor. With a competent combination of all factors and their balance, there is no threat to the sense of space and cannot be.
To understand how much the appearance of the interior changes when painting the walls, look at the following two photos of the same kitchen interior. US designer Thomas Frenis developed for the client two options for 3D visualization of the kitchen with walls of different colors.

Despite the fact that the furniture in both versions is black, the color of the walls completely changes the psychological perception of the situation. Although it must be taken into account that in this example the color of the ceiling also changes. Probably, many will consider the first option rather gloomy and they will be right. The black color is not harmless, with its excess, the situation can turn out to be boring and mournful, but it all depends on the tasks that the designer faces.

Interiors in which all surfaces (floor, walls and ceiling) are black are extremely rare. Few dare to experiment like this. However, there are isolated cases where such a palette is an important design idea. Most often this is done in home theaters.

Also, this may be dictated by the specific color preferences of the landlord. In some cases, the design project involves the use of different colors in different rooms. 2. Examples, combinations with other colors
It makes no sense to talk only about black walls in isolation from the design of this or that interior as a whole. Any room has its own color palette, and in any well-designed interior, this palette is balanced. Therefore, the most important design issue is the right combination of colors and the choice of the appropriate proportion.
Bright orange accents unload the atmosphere of a black living room

Painting the walls black can solve different problems. Very often, the owner of the apartment wants to create a dark environment in the room in this way. But the predominance of one color can create a too gloomy environment, so they try to balance the palette and focus on bright, warm accents. In the example, we see a living room with black walls, which has been added with bright orange decor items and multi-colored books on the shelves. Thanks to the thoughtful filling, the room seems quite cheerful and interesting. Also, the white ceiling plays an important role.

3. Working with lighting in a room with black walls
Rays of light are the complete opposite of darkness, even the darkest room can be completely transformed if powerful lighting is turned on. Knowing this, designers first of all turn to lighting systems when working with black interiors. There are many special techniques that allow you to create an elegant atmosphere in a room that, at first glance, seems gloomy and uninteresting. Let's look at some typical examples of interiors with black walls, where lighting scenarios play an important role.

All walls in the bedroom are finished with very dark wood effect MDF panels. Immediately striking are the included lamps near the bed. The light directed at the wall behind the head of the bed turned the black panels into gray and visually highlighted a separate large area. The example shows how colors can be changed using lighting.
4. Using dark shades of other colors
We have already noted that the perception of color depends on the intensity of lighting and the image of the interior can be completely changed by changing the lighting scenarios. There is a design technique based on the use of this feature. It is not necessary to paint the walls black, but dark shades of other colors (most often dark blue or dark brown) can be used instead. In this case, the room will look black only when there is a lack of light, and on a sunny day or with active light turned on, a color cast will be obvious, which will make the room more lively and interesting.

The walls in the bedroom of a country house are painted dark blue, but appear black when the blinds are closed and the lights are dimmed. Thus, during sleep, the color palette changes.
5. In what styles of walls is it appropriate to paint black
Black is forbidden in the classical style! Before the advent of electric lighting systems, all architects struggled with darkness and strove to use light neutral tones that reflect color well or bright saturated shades. The main task that the masters of the past solved was to minimize the gloomy atmosphere that already threatened all the rooms in the evening. The situation completely changed in the 20th century, when it became possible to regulate the amount of light in a room in simple ways. New technical achievements finally equalized the rights of all colors and shades, it became possible to use almost any combination.
If black walls were forbidden in ancient interiors, then there are no prohibitions in modern neoclassical projects created on the basis of classical rules and elements. Often black is used precisely in order to emphasize the modern direction of the design and its style.

- What shades go well with black
- What should be the design of black walls in different rooms
People usually associate black with something negative and gloomy. Do you too? The article will debunk this myth and prove that this color can be an elegant, stylish and even bright feature of your interior. It may be hard for you to believe now, but once you start by painting one wall in a dark color, it becomes obvious that it is universal. Add a few catchy accents, good lighting - and the interior of your room is ready.
Read on to find out everything about black wall design: how to make it, what to combine it with, what materials to choose for decor, and also get acquainted with 20 interesting and modern solutions for using this color in design.
Features of black color
Everyone has dark clothes, but many fear and avoid interiors in black tones. Why? Probably because of the stereotypes that have developed about this color. Some people consider it dull, while others are afraid that dark walls will visually eat up part of the space, and the room will become cramped, uncomfortable, there will not be enough light. In any case, this color can and should be used in the interior. Simply, when thinking about the design of a room with black walls, it is important not to forget about other colors, which we will discuss later.
Black is achromatic and does not belong to either the warm or cold spectrum (as well as white and gray colors). Therefore, you can create thousands of different combinations with it, and most of them will be successful. A competent approach to the use of this color will allow you to make interior design interesting and “delicious”, as well as save time on choosing the best color combinations.
Black is not only versatile, but also incredibly graphic, it can be used to distinguish between different parts of the room. It enhances the rest of the colors well due to the contrast created. This feature can be used by creating a dark edging on the walls and thereby emphasizing other shades of the interior.
If you are still hesitant to introduce a dark color into your living room, bedroom or kitchen because of the stereotypes that are firmly planted in your head, then keep in mind that in Asian countries this color is considered a symbol of purity, and the Japanese associate it with nobility and experience. Black has long been synonymous with luxury, elegance and aristocracy.
True, it is worth noting that in people with anxiety and psychological disorders, prolonged exposure to a gloomy room can exacerbate symptoms and even lead to depression. In this regard, we want to draw your attention to the caution of using dark shades in the design of a room with black walls.

Pros and cons of black in the interior
Pros:
- It makes the space visually deeper.
- It is convenient to combine it with other colors - both bright and calmer, which means that the scope for imagination is unlimited.
- A timeless classic, suitable for interior design in both luxurious stylish homes and small cozy apartments.
- It does not get dirty, which means that dust and small dirt will not be visible on the walls (if it is not a glossy finish).
- It can be combined with any other color you like, which means you can make your room design bright and interesting.
- Paintings, photographs, posters, maps will look great on a dark wall.
The stores now offer a huge range of various wall coverings: wallpaper, matte, glossy and varnish paints, tiles, etc. When choosing a design for a room with black walls, we advise you to pay attention to slate paint with a chalkboard effect, which is very popular now.
Perhaps not everyone likes the abundance of dark shades in the interior, but we believe that they are the best solution. Such walls really resemble a blackboard, and perhaps that is why you want to draw on them so much. Of course, we do not suggest literally painting your room with colored crayons, but why not color it in other ways?
Despite the abundance of advantages of the presence of black on the walls, there are also disadvantages of its use for design:
- It narrows the space, visually reducing the room. If you have a small room, make only one wall dark. So you add a stylish accent to your design, while not visually narrowing the room.
- It creates a feeling of coldness in the room. However, this can be easily overcome by adding various warm-colored decorations to the walls.

What shades black goes well with
We've talked a lot about how black works with other colors, and now we'd like to tell you which color combinations work best for dark walls.
This color will look beautiful paired with turquoise, blue, pink, purple, lemon, scarlet, lilac, green and other cool shades. It is also beneficial to combine it with some warm colors: red, orange, yellow. But if you decide to use a warm shade for the design of your walls, then you should choose rich colors so that the room does not look faded.
Do not use muted colors, as black will further enhance them and make the room look uninviting. It is better to choose pure and saturated shades.
Another not very successful color pair - brown and black. The colors drown out each other, and the brown shades on the walls become almost invisible.
Red and black go well together, and if you dilute them with turquoise or aquamarine, you get an interesting color composition.
Black wall design will be best combined with the following colors:
- Gold. Being symbols of luxury and prestige, this color combination is used in the design of rich houses. You can also fill your interior with luxury using these colors, especially in combination with luxury materials (velvet, stucco, marble, natural leather). This use of flowers on the walls in the house is an exquisite pathos, style and a sign of prosperity. It can be diluted with calmer shades, such as gray or beige.
- Yellow. So different, these colors play on the contrast. Yellow color, like the sun, illuminating the dark walls with its light and warmth and making them not so gloomy. Can be diluted with milky or gray.
- Orange. This pair of colors is often used in high-tech interior design. Even a small blotch of orange is enough to make the whole room brighter and sparkle with new colors. Usually furniture or household appliances are orange in the interior, less often walls are painted orange. In design, this combination of colors is often diluted with white elements.
- Red. There are many shades of red, and dark ones will make the room look darker. Therefore, we advise choosing a bright red and shading it with white. Red symbolizes sexuality, so it will be relevant to choose it for the design of a bedroom with black walls.

Black Wall Design Rules
While black is a versatile color, you should use it carefully in your design so that all rooms are exactly as you envision them. For example, now in stores there are many different types of wallpaper, the choice of which can sometimes be confusing, but not all of them will look equally good on the walls in different rooms of your apartment (living room, kitchen, bedroom). We want to draw your attention to some of the features of using dark colors in wall design so that your renovation is perfect.
- Choose a glossy finish, it will reflect light and your room will not look gloomy. For the same purpose, you can purchase textured wallpapers with various inserts, brilliant tints, and golden elements. By choosing glossy walls over matte ones, you fill the room with light and dilute the depth of the dark color.
- Consider in advance why you are doing dark walls in the room before buying wallpaper or paint. If you want to hang pictures on the wall or place a TV on it, then it is better to make this wall a more neutral shade (white, beige, light gray). The black color stands out too much and thus will draw attention to itself, distracting from the decor elements.
- Thinking through the design, take care of good lighting in the room where you plan to paint the walls dark. With a lack of light in the room it will be dull, so the rule “the more the better” works here. One of the most preferred solutions to the problem of lack of light is the installation of large panoramic windows.
- As we have already said, dark colors greatly narrow the space, so it is worth diversifying the room with elements with an expanding visual effect. One of these is the partial painting of the walls in black. For example, you can paint two opposite walls black, and the other two walls beige, gray or white. Or choose one wall to be the dark accent of your room.
You can also use black wallpaper with beige inserts in the design. You will be able to visually expand the room in this way, but it is still recommended to use black for the design of large rooms so that you can not resort to such tricks.
Think carefully with which color you will create combinations. This choice affects the success of the whole room design with black walls.

Design of black walls in various rooms
It is ideal to use black for the design of the bedroom of the spouses or the men's bedroom. In the first case, the color will give the room mystery, some magic and even passion (especially in combination with red). Dark-colored walls will add rigor and brutality to the men's bedroom, and also make it very stylish.
For a hall, office or vestibule, it is recommended to use combinations with other achromatic colors (white, grey). This color combination is quite simple, but it looks stylish and does not interfere with focus. Bright colors will distract from work, so you should not use them here.

Black color should not be used in the design of the walls of the entrance hall, as this place welcomes the hosts and guests. A dark hallway will look cold and uncomfortable, so it is better to use light and warm shades here. But in the corridors, you can experiment with a dark color, but it's better not to make all the walls black, but just add a few accents.
The design of the children's room walls in black is unacceptable. Use any other shades (bright or calmer, warm or cool) to create accents in the child's room.
When designing a kitchen with black walls, you should be careful: here it is better not to overdo it and stop at painting only one wall (remember that the dark color narrows the room). In the dining room, it is better to refuse black, as it can negatively affect appetite.
