17 country bedroom ideas - from cottages to stately homes
Decoration
From ancient cottages to graceful Georgian houses, the English country bedroom has an irresistible appeal. We've gone through the House & Garden archive to find our favourites
By Bonnie Robinson
An English country bedroom can come in many forms, from a low-ceilinged, beamed attic in an old cottage with uneven walls and floors, to a graceful room of grand proportions in a Regency villa. The age of the house might conjure up images of traditional decoration, full of patterned fabrics and antique furniture; or the eccentricities of the architecture might suggest that a cleaner, more pared-back approach will work. There are plenty of looks for country bedrooms that we love: patterned wallpaper, brass bedsteads and quilts are wonderful for creating a sense of warmth, while traditional four-poster beds with stately hangings are irresistible in the right setting. Equally, a white-washed wall and modern wooden furniture can seem just right in ancient rooms where the quirks of the surroundings need to be balanced by a simple aesthetic. Whatever you're going for, our favourite country bedroom ideas are sure to provide you with inspiration.

Native ShareOld beams and wallpaper – in this case ‘Indienne’ from Lewis & Wood – make for an inviting combination in the bedroom of this Herefordshire farmhouse. The colour palette is soft, with muted patterns and a classic brass bedstead contributing to the sense of warmth.
Paul Massey
Native ShareThis perfectly traditional country bedroom belongs to interior designer Carlos Garcia's Norfolk manor house. The four-poster was built around a pair of Gillows posts and has curtains in Robert Kime’s ‘Tree Peony’ linen. The sofa is covered in Volga Linen’s ‘Tuva’ in celadon, with cushions in ‘Lynxia’ silk by Robert Kime.
James McDonald
Native ShareModern and traditional meet in Tobias Vernon's Somerset cottage, where antique furniture sits next to contemporary pieces (as well as a wonderful art collection) against a clean, simple backdrop of white walls. An Ian McKeever etching and a Svenskt Tenn brass candle sconce hang above Tobias’s childhood Habitat bed, now painted Farrow & Ball’s ‘Emerald Green’. The hand-woven linen throw is by Catarina Riccabona; the oil paintings are by Emma Alcock.
Paul Massey
Native ShareThe interior designer Caroline Holdaway had already decorated two houses for Robin Muir and Paul Lyon Maris when they enlisted her help on their new Cotswolds home. In this small guest room, a bedcover and curtains in Christopher Maya’s ‘Ostrich’ linen in charleston from Holland & Sherry pick up on walls in ‘Moss’ by Paint & Paper Library. The antique ceramic finial on the window ledge is from Brownrigg.
Ben Pentreath
Native ShareMarrying old and new is a difficult task in a grand country house, but Ben Pentreath has managed it with considerable flair in this Regency villa in Hampshire. Traditional toile de Jouy gets a bold reinvention in this bedroom, where Manuel Canovas’ ‘Bellegarde’ toile de Jouy in rouge, from Colefax and Fowler, was used throughout. Farrow & Ball’s ‘Pink Ground’ on the ceiling contrasts with woodwork painted in its ‘Blue Gray’. The ceramic ‘Charlotte Candlestick’ table lamp is from Hector Finch.
Michael Sinclair
Native ShareAttics always make for charming guest rooms, especially since their architectural quirks only have to be tolerated for a short time! Textile designer Natasha James has created a magical space in her country house in Yorkshire, combining Cole & Son's ‘Sweet Pea’ wallpaper with two of her own Tasha Textiles prints – ‘Honfleur Reverse’ on the armchair and eiderdowns in ‘Jaipur’. The kilim rug came from Natalia Violet Antiques.
Paul Massey
Native ShareIn one of the cottages on Prince Charles' Cornish estate, the decoration is clean, simple and unfussy. White walls warmed up by colourful textiles will always be one of our favourite looks for a cottage. The quilt is from The Romantic Englishwoman in Lostwithiel.

Native ShareWith a large family and frequent guests, the owner of this house in Hampshire tasked Henriette von Stockhausen with creating elegant and versatile interiors that help to tie together the original Georgian rooms and a recent extension. In the main bedroom, Henriette has designed an extra-wide four-poster bed that is extra tall, too, to keep it in proportion. The owner’s preference for calm colours prevails here, with a Ziegler Sultanabad carpet, a sofa with a back lowered to the height of the bed behind it and the leafy arabesques of a pair of antique mirrors, against Lewis & Wood’s ‘Indienne’ wallpaper.

Native ShareLoft conversions in cities and towns are often small spaces ideal for children or guests. The top of a barn conversion, on the other hand, can be a fabulously spacious main bedroom removed from the hubbub of daily life. Light colours and scrubbed or limewashed beams keep them bright. The main bedroom of Jo Vestey's Oxfordshire farmhouse has Jo's photographs ondisplay and a Japanese light on the desk. The dark beams, floors and desk contrasts nicely with the white rug and walls, giving an overall look that is both clean and rustic.

Native ShareJeanetta Rowan-Hamilton of Nettles Cashmere restored her tin-roofed fishing lodge in Scotland after inheriting it from her parents. She abhors waste and loves change of usage, and is often seen in the salvage section of her local antiques shop. In one of the four bedrooms, Jeanetta has repainted this pair of Victorian beds that were her grandmother's. The neutral tongue and groove walls and ceiling brings the feel of old and new together.
Davide Lovatti
Native ShareA bedroom on the first floor of Tom Helme's Carskiey Estate has a soft, pastel palette, with window and bed curtains in a matching 'N-098' wicker linen from Fermoie. Pink and green is a classic colour combination, and it doesn't come much more traditional than that perfect four-poster bed.
Simon Upton
Native ShareOne of the guest bedroom at Bowood House in Wiltshire has walls covered in Colefax & Fowler's 'Bowood' design - a pattern named after this house with interiors by John Fowler. The same pattern features on the bed valance, headboard, curtains and chair upholstery.

Native ShareDesigner Guy Goodfellow has made the window a feature in this manor-house bedroom in Devon. Its casement is painted in Rose of Jericho's 'Mountain Green', framed by thick linen curtains and with a smart seat underneath. The ceiling is painted with floral motifs, giving the appearance of pargeting. To replicate these murals, try the painter Dawn Reader.
James Fennell
Native ShareSeveral shades of blue are combined to great effect in this bedroom at Badminton House in Gloucestershire. The bed hangings are in 'Hops' by Colefax and Fowler. For a similar soft-blue paint to that on the walls of this room, try 'Sky Blue' from Papers and Paints.
Simon Brown
Native ShareIn the spare bedroom of Caroline Holdaway's cottage, an olive-stripe flatweave rug from Sinclair Till contrasts with a vibrant tartan rug from Toast used as a bedspread and cushions made from fabric pieces left over from projects.

Alexandra Tolstoy's Oxfordshire cottage is a charming mix of old and new. Emma Burns of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler worked with the existing features of each room to breathe new life into them. The bedroom's orange velvet curtains (out of shot) were an original fixture, though Emma had them remade and hung from an antique pole to match the quilt (which she sourced from Colefax and Fowler Antiques). The wallpaper is 'Alice' by George Spencer, while Oka is a good match for the embroidered cushion covers.

Rockett St George

Bedroom ideas: Soft modern
Belying a common design assumption that canopy beds are for traditional settings only. This version from Rockett St George forgoes heavy curtains or voile covering, leaving an exposed iron frame as the focal point in this imposing country bedroom.

Bedroom ideas: Fun accessories
This bedside scheme has a refined colour palette of just 3 shades – deep red, cream, and brown – whilst all of the visual interest comes from layers of pattern, texture, and playful accessories. We love the unexpected details here, especially the wall-mounted straw hats, and the pairing of ikat and rattan.

Bedroom ideas: Layers on layers
This John Lewis bedroom scheme is a treat to look at, with layer upon layer of botanical print and soft colours. This is a great example of how to use pale grey – frequently reserved for minimalist bedrooms – in a more maximalist way.

Bedroom ideas: Royal blue
A classic choice of bedroom colour; pale blue is a calming shade that can encourage relaxation and restful sleep. We love the clever paint effect of matching the colour on the walls to the door, skirting board and window frame.

Bedroom ideas: Scandi-inspired
This serene bedroom has strong Scandinavian influences in the pale wood walls, white-on-white colour palette, and accents of nature. If you want to create something similar, make sure you use lots of textiles and soft furnishings to soften and add warmth.

Bedroom ideas: Outdoors in
Green is one of our favourite colours to use in a bedroom – especially this sophisticated and nature-inspired sage. You might naturally steer away from using browns alongside your greens for fear of labouring the theme, but this textured light brown works wonderfully well. Some clean, bright whites would fit in happily, too.

Bedroom ideas: All natural
Materials used – and celebrated – in their natural form is a common design feature of country homes and bedrooms. Here exposed brick, natural rattan, and raw wood are paired with soft and tactile accents (the velvet bedspread, berber rug, and pampas grass.

Bedroom ideas: Art Deco
Whilst this playful 'Crane Fonda' wallpaper from Divine Savages is a statement in itself, the rest of this bedroom design scheme fully commits to a bold Art Deco theme – from the herringbone floor to the bamboo canopy bed and pink velvet bench. Another great paint effect here, with the dusty pink tones of the wallpaper matched in the painted ceiling.

Bedroom ideas: Sweet country
This cornflower blue bedlinen with sweet ruffled Oxford border from The White Company belongs in a country-inspired home. We love the woven seagrass detailing in the rug, bedside table and pendant light, too.

Bedroom ideas: Accent with black
Accenting with black is a great design trick if you've found yourself with a lot of pastels or softer colours in your bedroom accessories or bedlinen. This striking black headboard adds a bit of depth and prevents the overall design scheme from appearing too chalky.

This bedroom is a masterclass in introducing cool, contemporary tones in a traditional setting, mixing silvery greys and fresh whites with more traditional features like the panelled wall, feature fireplace, and curved headboard. This is ideal for those who need total calm in their environment to get a good night's sleep.

Bedroom ideas: Rustic and charming
This design provides a comprehensive country bedroom checklist: floral bedlinen, accents of sage green, light wood, plenty of texture, and elements from nature. Replicating the same in your own home won't steer you far wrong.

Bedroom ideas: Country estate
Fully embracing the country estate theme here, with a riot of mismatched pattern across furniture and soft furnishings. The key to successfully mixing prints in this way is to choose complimentary base colours – here, the silvery grey on the bed complements the pale pink of the curtains, and the soft cream of the chair.

Bedroom ideas: Farmhouse
You might not naturally add bold red velvet to a farmhouse setting, but as you can see here, it fits beautifully. Although counterintuitive, deep red is a great option if the wood in your home is very dark, because the richness of both are complementary. It's important to add lighter elements however, like the pale walls and pink bedlinen.

Bedroom ideas: Playful print
If you don't love the idea of following a theme or going big on colour and pattern, a nod to the countryside can be as subtle as adding a quaint duck motif, here printed on cotton bedding from our collection at Homebase.

100+ country style bedroom ideas: interior and design photos
A distinctive feature of the country style bedroom design is a harmonious combination of rustic cozy interior in urban apartments. Tired of the fast pace of life and the bustle of the city? Do you want to fully enjoy the cozy home atmosphere? Then decorate your own bedroom in a unique country style by looking at a collection of the best ideas in the photo!
Country style bedroom interior - photo
Country style first appeared in England and then spread to European countries and Russia. The main principle of this design direction is to avoid modern materials, which are not associated with such concepts as "naturalness", "naturalness" and "rural atmosphere". Despite the fact that the country style combines several directions (English, Provence, Russian, etc.), they have common features. The interior of a country-style bedroom should be simple, cozy and light if the following features prevail in it:
- Clear geometry and simple shapes.
- Muted and calm shades.
- Home comfort in every element.
- Unfinished wall surfaces in some places.
- Natural materials.
- Solid wood furniture.
- The minimum number of equipment or its complete absence.
- Floral prints.
- Small accessories.
Country style bedroom furniture
Although many apartment and country house owners today try to use natural materials for interior design, this is not always possible. Solid wood furniture is quite expensive, so MDF headsets are popular. Advanced technologies have made it possible to process chipboards with high quality.
As a result, LSDP furniture practically does not differ from wooden furniture in appearance. With the right combination of all interior items, even inexpensive materials will look aesthetically attractive. nine0003
Avoid glass and chrome surfaces where possible. Combine different interior styles, because the main goal is to fill the room with comfort, and not strictly follow the rules.
Country style in different regions has its own features, as it is formed under the influence of local traditions and climatic conditions.
How to furnish the interior of a bedroom in country style
When decorating the interior, you will have to pay special attention to the decoration of walls, ceiling and floor. If you decide to use wall paint, then it must be matte. It is acceptable to use several shades to highlight one or two zones in the room, but most often the finish is made in one color. nine0003
The effect of whitewashed walls can be achieved with decorative plaster. Adjust the graininess of the mixture, then it will turn out to make the walls rougher in some places.
The easiest way to decorate walls is to stick paper wallpapers. Choose not only plain wallpaper, but also in flowers, polka dots or stripes to emphasize the simplicity and unobtrusiveness of the interior.
If desired, brickwork can be imitated on one of the walls, and wooden beams can be fixed on the ceiling. It all depends on your design idea, because you can make an interior with rustic motifs not only thanks to the decoration of walls or furniture, but also textiles. Even the most austere atmosphere can be diluted with the help of properly selected curtains, bedspreads and decorative pillows made using the patchwork technique.
An important role in the arrangement of the interior is played by lighting, which must fully correspond to the purpose of the room. The bedroom may have subdued lighting, so use lamps with fabric shades. Sconces and floor lamps will look beautiful in such an interior.
Accessorize with cute vintage pieces that will accentuate the design and create a cozy atmosphere in your bedroom. Porcelain figurines, wicker baskets and boxes, paintings with natural landscapes are ideal. If you know how to do something with your own hands, be sure to decorate the interior with Hand Made crafts. nine0003
Design of a small bedroom in country style - photo
The bedroom is a rest room, so it always has a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Although country design is simple, the furniture in the room should be massive and comfortable. An important place is occupied in the bedroom by the bed, which will decorate the interior and help to equip the seating area. Choose a bed with small legs, with a low headboard and footboard. You can buy a metal bed, but it must be painted so that the shine of the metal does not disturb the harmony. nine0003
The best option would be to purchase a ready-made set of bedroom furniture.
Although sliding wardrobes are very popular today, you will have to forget about them. Give preference to cabinets with hinged doors without forged parts, but with carved decor on the facades.
Bedside tables help maintain the overall style of the country interior, the facades of which can be varnished, painted or imitate the aging of wood. The rustic features of the interior will be emphasized by an old chest or a large chest of drawers. If you decide to use old furniture, restore it so that it fits in with the overall interior and other pieces of furniture. nine0003
Book lovers in the interior of the bedroom in country style can buy a rocking chair.
Do not be afraid to abandon stereotypes, because the bedroom should emphasize your individuality. Combine different styles and achieve harmony in the interior. You have learned how to apply country style in the bedroom, now fill your relaxation room with conciseness, naturalness and versatility. nine0003
