How we test toasters
At the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances Lab, we’ve tested hundreds of appliances over the years to find the best ones, including toasters and toaster ovens. On our quest to make the perfect toast and find the best toaster on the market, we left no crumb behind: We've tested nearly 60 toasters over the years to determine how quickly and evenly they toast white bread.
We lined up toasted slices side by side from light to dark to evaluate each toaster's range. After we toasted consecutive batches, we compared them for consistency from batch to batch. We reviewed the owner’s manual and evaluated the ease of using the controls. We also evaluated surface temperatures of each unit during toasting as well as cleanability (We love a removable crumb tray when cleaning a toaster oven or toaster!). We checked whether or not the slots can accommodate thick bagels, long slices of bread and small English muffins. And we noted whether slices pop up high enough for easy grabbing.
What to look for when shopping for the best toaster
✔️ Style of toaster: When choosing a toaster, consider how many slices of toast you regularly make at once and what size the bread you like to toast.
- Four-slice toasters: If there are more than two of you racing to make breakfast at the same time, a four-slice toaster is probably your best bet.
- Two-slice toasters: If counter space is a concern, however, you may want to opt for a two-slice toaster.
- Long-slot toasters: Long-slot toasters are gaining popularity now due to the rise in more rustic forms of bread. Opt for long slots if you love sourdough or other artisanal bread. You'll rarely be able to fit a whole slice in a traditional toaster without cutting it in half.
- Wide-slot toasters: Keep an eye out for toasters with wide slots. These make toasting bagels and thicker slices of bread easier and fuss-free.
✔️ Material: The exterior material of toasters is more about looks than anything else. In our tests, we found that toast quality wasn't compromised either way.
- Plastic toasters: Generally, plastic toasters tend to be less expensive than metal but aren't always the most aesthetically pleasing.
- Metal toasters: Metal toasters usually are brushed steel or stainless steel and can coordinate with your other kitchen appliances.
✔️ Settings: In addition to toasting bread to your favorite shade and doneness, look for a toaster with the right settings for you. For example, the bagel setting usually toasts only the inside of a bagel and warms the outside so you don't have to worry about an overly dry or crunchy bite. A defrost setting is great for frozen waffles or bread; it typically adds more time to the toasting process so you get the same results you would if the waffles or bread were fresh. Reheat settings typically toast bread or other ingredients for a short amount of time, perfect for a toaster pastry or adding a touch more color.
✔️ Nice-to-haves: While not every toaster will have additional special features there are some nice-to-haves that you can look for when selecting a toaster.
- A glass window will allow you to peer into your toaster as it's toasting to help reduce the likelihood of burnt toast.
- A motorized or high-lift lever helps remedy the issue of stuck toast that is hard to grab out of the toaster slot and takes away the manual task of pushing the toaster lever down.
- A touchscreen interface is easy to read and operate, providing an especially sleek look and usually more toasting options.
How do you choose between a toaster or a toaster oven?
A toaster is great for someone with limited counter space and with limited toasting needs. If you love to toast bagels, bread and waffles and don't need to toast or bake much else, then a reliable toaster is your best bet.
A toaster oven is great for someone who not only toasts bread, but also likes to add toppings like melted cheese, heat up frozen pizza or even roast vegetables. While this will take up more counter space than a toaster, it will offer additional features that can help eliminate the use of a microwave or reduce using the oven (especially great on a hot day).
An air fryer toaster oven is great for someone who loves toasting just as much as they love air frying. Reducing the need to have two appliances, an air fryer toaster oven will help you toast bread, air fry chicken wings and possibly even bake a cake.

Consumer Reports recently tested two and four-slice toasters. Testers even looked at a toaster designed with a gluten-free setting. Find out which toaster pops to the top!
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Consumer Reports recently tested two and four-slice toasters. Testers even looked at a toaster designed with a gluten-free setting. Find out which toaster pops to the top!
No matter how you slice it, the toaster is a must-have appliance for most kitchens, which is why Consumer Reports tests dozens of models every year. "We set each toaster to a medium setting, and we look at how well each toaster makes a single slice and then a full batch," said Haniya Rae, Consumer Reports Home Editor.

This industry standard chart -- yes, that really is a thing they use -- helps testers categorize how well each toaster performs. The best toasters match this evenly browned toast in the toast color chart. "We're also looking for good color range with each toaster so everyone that uses the toaster will be happy with their toast," said Rae.
Consumer Reports also assesses how long each toaster takes to deliver the goods. The faster the better! "You also want a toaster that's really easy to use and clean," said Rae. "You don't want any cracks or crevices and you want to be able to pull out that crumb tray very easily."
Testers even looked at a toaster with a gluten-free bread setting. "Gluten-free bread is a bit denser than regular bread, and you might not get the same results on the same setting," said Rae.
The $30 Bella delivered. And performed excellent on the standard setting with regular bread, too.

Toasting for a crowd? Consider splurging on the top-rated four-slice toaster, Breville Bit More, which costs $100. It has wide slots for bagels and if your toast turns out too light, press the "bit more" button and it will toast a little longer.
Consumer Reports tested all of the toasters with pre-cut, packaged bagels. But, if you are a bagel lover and you like a fatter, bakery bagel, be sure to look for a toaster with the widest slots you can find. Some toasters have a bagel setting that toasts on one side only, so you can brown the cut side and keep the other side softer.

Test of toasters
Breakfast of an average Russian cannot be imagined without a sandwich - this is clear even without any test. Anything can be included in the kit - porridge, salad, scrambled eggs or newfangled muesli, but a sandwich is sacred!
It is understandable: the proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins contained in bread are unique and absolutely necessary in order to stock up on energy in the morning for both physical and mental activity.
“Get charged in the morning, Lyova! Brains - they also require this, ”the unforgettable Savva Ignatievich from Pokrovsky Gates instructed his comrade - and he was absolutely right.
If you remember, the heroes of the film about the fifties buttered fresh bread, but modern nutritionists advise to dry it or toast it: in this form it is even healthier.
Especially since this is not at all difficult to do with one of the most popular small household appliances - a toaster.
Text: Polina Strizhak.
The first thing we paid attention to was, of course, safety.
Casing heating
Almost all models have proved to be good in this regard, since many of them have thermally insulated, that is, non-heating cases.
And yet, if you use some appliances several times in a row (for example, you have guests having breakfast and you need to quickly feed 4-5 people), the body starts to heat up a little.
It is unlikely that you will get burned on the walls, but it still does not hurt to be careful. In one of the devices, the case heats up from top to bottom, the top half is hotter than the bottom, and in all toasters, the top panel is very hot - you don’t need to touch it.
Risk of burns when removing toast
None of the manufacturers allow removing toast with metal objects. By the way, if the device is also plugged in, the procedure becomes very life-threatening. If it is turned off, it is still not worth it, as this is fraught with damage to the device, and above all, to the quartz heating elements.
But not all manufacturers of toasters bothered to make sure that it was convenient to take out the toasts with their hands. This convenience depends on how high the toast rises at the end of cooking. In some models, it is possible to lift the slices with the help of levers, but not in all - a couple of times we wondered which is better - to risk damaging the device or burning your fingers?
Safety briefing from manufacturers
We must pay tribute to all the companies that provided us with devices - no one forgot to warn about the potential danger of toasters. But they did it all so differently!
In one of the instructions we found a practical guide to raising children; in the other (by the way, the only one!) - information that the device must be grounded, and extension cords cannot be used; in some - calls not to use the device for industrial purposes and not to put it on the edge of the table; and in all without exception the following recommendations:
* do not let the appliance and its parts come into contact with water,
* do not let children use the toaster and do not leave them unattended near the operating appliance,
* do not use the toaster under flammable objects such as curtains and kitchen shelves,
* do not fry too thick pieces of bread and do not remove stuck bread with metal objects, especially if the appliance is plugged in,
* do not wash the appliance in a dishwasher,
* Shake out the crumbs regularly by removing the crumb tray.
Test like a sheet music: what else did we evaluate?
We did not set ourselves the task of assessing the technical characteristics and their compliance with the standards, it was important for us to understand the consumer properties of the devices. Among the most important qualities, we have identified:
* design,
* ergonomics, including the convenience of the control panel,
* uniformity of toasting on one of the medium modes,
* preparation time for 1 toast,
* operation of separately declared modes and functions - defrosting, heating buns, warming up cooled toasts, browning on one side,
* attached instructions - quality of printing, translation, logic and clarity of presentation, coverage of principles the operation of the main modes and functions, the availability of a technical description.
We are in a hurry to share with you the thoughts and conclusions that our experts came up with in the course of researching the consumer qualities of toasters!
Designers flocked to "lunch kits"
We saw several trends in the design of the units we tested. The first of them: premium appliances gravitate towards elongated shapes.
The second, however, directly related to the first one is the shift from compactness towards bulkiness. Even some appliances, in the characteristics of which there is a direct indication of compactness, turn out to be too large to “live” in a standard small-sized kitchen.
The third feature is the obvious desire of manufacturers to organically “fit” their toasters into modern high-tech kitchens. Indeed, the combination of metallic and black colors (namely, most of our models are made in this range) is the best option for such interiors.
At the same time, some manufacturers, using the most modern technologies in terms of functionality, return our imagination to the fifties and sixties of the last century, focusing on retro style in design. At the same time, the devices look no less modern and fashionable than their "high-tech" counterparts.
It should also be noted that many of the tested appliances are included in special design series of small household appliances - the so-called "breakfast sets", therefore, in the corresponding lines they also have "partners" - teapots and coffee makers, made with them in a single styles.
We paid special attention to the possibility of maintaining an attractive appearance of each device. A common misfortune of our toasters was fingerprints on the body - all devices suffered from this to varying degrees. Matte stainless steel or anodized aluminum is preferable in this regard, but the beautiful red American KitchenAid Artisan toaster will often have to be wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
Controls, all the way up!
Of course, for a toaster it is important how convenient the control panel is. Devices are controlled both mechanically - levers, "sliders", rotary switches, and electronically - buttons, sound and light indication.
We realized that it is most convenient when at least part of the control tools are not on the side of the appliance, which forces you to bend over to look at, for example, numbers indicating temperature conditions, but on the top of the toaster. However, such conveniences are associated, as a rule, with another disadvantage - the bulkiness of the device.
In addition to the control panel, an important ergonomic element is the removable crumb tray. In all models, except for one - the most inexpensive - it is easily removed by a special handle and just as easily inserted back. In the economy class C3 toaster, the crumb tray is fixed in a special way, since it is also the bottom of the appliance - this is not very convenient.
An important point was "communication" with the power cord. A device for winding it and adjusting its length is found in almost all models, and the length varies within 95-115 cm. The longest power cord - 140 cm - for the BOSCH Solitaire model, with a wire length regulator, this is very convenient, especially since it is not recommended to use an extension cord in this case.
Lunch is not available during toaster testing
The toaster testing week will be remembered by our editorial staff as the most satisfying. At first (on Monday morning) all the toasts seemed to us both tasty and beautiful, but when the first excitement passed, and the first hunger was satisfied, we became more legible, namely, we were able to objectively evaluate the uniformity of toasting in different devices.
It should be noted that for testing we bought exactly the same special bread for toast - these were already sliced and packaged slices of the same length, width and thickness - and used the average temperature regime. In the matter of uniform frying, not all devices have shown themselves equally, there are clear leaders and outsiders here. We gave each appliance a second, third, and even fourth chance to evenly fry the pieces of bread, but, as a rule, if one edge burned, then all attempts ended the same way.
Some electronically controlled models have an auto-centering toast function. As we understood, this should contribute to the uniformity of frying. But we didn't notice much difference in the results of models that have this nuance and those that don't.
Not a single toast…
The opportunity to rehabilitate in case of uneven roasting was provided to those models that have a frozen bread defrosting mode.
As a rule, this function is activated by pressing one button, and the browning level control should be in the desired position - again, we left the medium setting - for example, 5 or 6.
We were very pleased with the results of these tests: the bread turned out to be very evenly toasted (apparently, this is facilitated by high humidity), not overdried, fragrant and tasty - much tastier than simple toast.
Not every toaster has been specifically declared to reheat bread or cooled toast. However, our experts considered that this can be done in any of the presented models: if not by pressing a special button (warming up), then simply by choosing the minimum temperature regime.
We liked the results, except that the toast got drier. It's best to eat them right after cooking!
Buns, croissants, bagels are available on many models. Baking is placed on a special stand, which is “hidden” in the body of the device and lifted by a special lever.
The most comfortable and beautiful stand is on the BRAUN toaster. The function proved to be good in all models - the buns became softer, more fragrant, and our figures are farther and farther away from the reference 90-60-90.
Well, in the KENWOOD TTM312 model there was a very wide slot for bread, into which a special cassette is inserted, where the manufacturer recommends heating sandwiches. However, all firms are asked not to warm up very rich pastries, buns with cream or butter - this is dangerous!
The test proved: on the one hand, it’s also delicious!
Browning on one side is a rather rare function, the essence of which is that the heating elements work only on one side. On the one hand, the toast turns out to be fried and crispy, and on the other hand, it is hot, soft and slightly golden. They use this mode for various reasons - it’s more convenient for someone to bite off, it’s tastier for someone, while manufacturers recommend frying bagels and baguettes cut lengthwise in this mode. We liked the classic jam sandwiches prepared this way.
So, whoever roasts toast in the morning is acting wisely! It remains to choose an equally wise assistant who will not disappoint, but on the contrary, every morning will bring both benefit and pleasure.
How to choose a toaster?
How to choose a toaster
A toaster is a device that can not only toast a slice of bread for breakfast, but also warm up a bun and even defrost frozen bread. For many, this information may seem like news. After all, the toaster has always been a device designed exclusively for making toasted slices of bread, so there was no question of choice - they bought what they had. Yes, at first it was. However, modern devices have become more multifunctional, so over time, the question of “which toaster to choose” has gained its relevance.
Type
Although the toasters are of the same variety, they have two different control systems:
- mechanical;
- electronic.
Mechanically controlled devices are very simple and do not have any additional functions. Like all good old toasters, they only know how to toast bread, but they do not heat or defrost anything. Mechanical control is implemented in a rotary timer, with which the operating time of the toaster is set. The disadvantage of such toasters has always been, is and will remain the only one. If you do not follow the toasting process, the toast will burn.
Such models are equipped with a toaster off button, which allows you to interrupt the roasting at any time. So if you suddenly notice that the toasts have already begun to burn, there is no need to take out the hot slices from the operating device when burning: just press a special button and it will turn off. However, no button will save you from the need for personal presence in the process of toasting.
Electronic control, on the contrary, controls any process of operation of the toaster. Everything here is on time. The toasting time for slices of bread depends on the selected temperature. Also, such toasters “make sure that the toast is evenly fried. After a certain time, the device automatically turns off or gives a signal that the toast is ready. Therefore, such a toaster can be safely left to work alone.
Electronically controlled toasters are usually equipped with devices that allow you to adjust the degree of toasting and cooking time. The principle of operation is simple: using a rotary switch, the user selects the temperature required to roast the slices in the way the user wants and likes - from slightly golden to dark brown. The rotary switch has 6 to 11 "temperature" positions. There are toasters with smooth temperature control.
Power
The amount of energy consumed by the toaster varies from 100 to 1700 watts. The power here is related to the speed of toasting. Toasters require an average of 600 to 1600 watts to operate. However, there can be no talk of excessive expenditure of energy. The operating time of a powerful toaster is a matter of minutes, so precious in the morning.
Housing
There are toasters made of metal, but mostly they are made of plastic. It is a durable, lightweight material that is easy to care for. Expensive models are dressed in metal cases made of stainless steel or aluminum. The surface of such toasters can be glossy and matte. The first option looks very attractive at first, but it gets dirty over time, so it’s better to give preference to a matte finish that won’t leave fingerprints. However, the coating material for toasters is not a significant parameter, since it does not affect the result of its work in any way.
However, toasters, regardless of the material of the case, in order to avoid burns and injuries, must have reliable thermal insulation, because the heating temperature here is not a joke. In order to conveniently carry the device, manufacturers supply their models with comfortable handles.
In order for the user to be able not only to toast bread, but also to warm up sandwiches and buns, manufacturers equip toasters with a removable grate for heating food, which is placed above the device's loading openings. Food is placed on this grid and heated by the heat generated by the toaster.
In the lower part of the body of the toaster, in some models, there is a retractable tray for collecting crumbs, the appearance of which is inevitable in the process of making toast. If they are not removed, they may catch fire. If such a tray is not provided, the crumbs either spill out directly onto the table through slots in the bottom, or accumulate in the toaster, which is dangerous and unhygienic.
There can be 1, 2 or 4 compartments for toast. In models elongated in length, with one compartment, slices of bread are located side by side, without partitions and are usually designed for 2 slices. With two - slices are placed in parallel and separated by a partition and can accommodate both two (one in each compartment) and four (two in each compartment) toast.
The maximum number of slices of bread that the toaster can hold at one time is 2 to 4 toasts. However, this does not prevent you from toasting only one or three slices of bread at a time if you wish. For a large family, it is better to choose a more spacious model so that toasting does not drag on for hours.
When buying, pay attention to the length of the cord. Using too short (less than 50 cm) is not very convenient. On the other hand, a cord that is too long (more than 100 cm) can easily stumble or hurt. However, if the toaster has a compartment for the cord, then the excessive length of the cord can be ignored. If the cord has to be wound by hand, then this will quickly lead to kinks and damage, which is dangerous for a short circuit.
Functions
In order to toast toasts evenly on both sides, manufacturers equip toasters with an automatic centering function. There are models in which the heating elements themselves are mobile, which, thanks to electronics, set the slices themselves in the correct position. Also relevant are the functions of heating already toasted toast and toasting bread slices on one side only. For those who like to buy frozen bread for toast, the defrosting function is also very popular. The toaster first defrosts and then toasts the slices of bread.
Small slices are sometimes quite difficult to remove from the toaster, so manufacturers have come up with a function for high slice lift. On some models, to lift small toasts, use the lift lever in the "extra lift" position.
Conclusion
We hope this article will help you decide on the choice of a toaster. If you pay maximum attention to preparing breakfast, then the simplest toaster may be suitable for you for the best result. After all, the main thing is not the device, but the person who controls it. If you are chronically short of time in the morning, we recommend that you still pay attention to the “advanced” toaster, which you do not need to constantly look after.
