TOASTER
On almost all toasters, there is a crumb tray that you can easily pull out to get rid of all the crumbs that collect at the bottom. If you want to clean the surface of the toaster, unplug it and wipe it on the outside with a slightly damp cloth. The toaster should never be washed or cleaned with water, as that’s not something toasters are designed to handle.
To enjoy toast without a toaster, the easiest way is to use a frying pan and gently toast your bread slices in the pan until you get the right colour. You can also toast bread in the oven. Whether you choose the frying pan or the oven, it’s important to keep a watchful eye on the bread, as the process goes quickly at the end. To avoid burnt bread, it is best to check the slices regularly.
A toaster contains heating elements that heat the bread at high temperature from two sides. Due to the high temperature, the bread gets a toasted surface. Toasters are equipped with a timer and pop-up function, to make the bread jump up when it is ready.
The vast majority of toasters give you the opportunity to choose how well-toasted you want the bread to be. More advanced toasters have features such as thawing, the ability to toast bagels and settings that allow you to further specify the toasting time.
Smart, but Not a Genius
We purchased the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster so that our reviewer could put it to the test in her kitchen. Keep reading for our full product review.
Toasters have long been kitchen staples, and like everything else in the world, they’ve come a long way since their inception. With modern engineering, the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster is one of the most advanced and elegant options out there, but it also comes with a price tag that may raise an eyebrow. Is it worth the extra cash, or are you better off investing in a different smart appliance? We tested it with white bread, an artisanal loaf from the farmers’ market, and frozen bagels to find out its capabilities.
The Best Toasters, Tested by Our Experts
The Spruce Eats / Lindsay Boyers
Design: Sleek and sexy
You might not think “sexy” is the right word for a toaster, but the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster will change your mind. Unlike other toasters that can look kind of clunky, I didn’t mind keeping this one on my countertop. The stainless steel finish is beautiful, and when the toaster sits on your counter, it looks like it’s intentional rather than just sitting there because it has no other place to go.
It’s a four-slice toaster, but instead of four consecutive openings, it has two long slots that are extra wide. Not only does this allow you to fit thicker Texas-style and artisan breads, but it also gives the toaster a narrower (albeit longer) footprint that makes it more streamlined.
In lieu of your standard notches and spring levers, it has five buttons on the top face that have an LED border that lights up when you press them and a horizontal lever that you can use to manually control darkness. In short: It looks really good.
The Spruce Eats / Lindsay Boyers
Features: Smart, but not a genius
The Breville toaster isn’t a smart appliance in the way you might imagine it—or at least not in the way I imagined it. When I hear the word “smart” I think of advanced features like the ability to automatically sense and adjust toasting time. But this toaster doesn’t have any of that. That’s not to say it doesn’t have a handful of convenient features, though.
In addition to pretty standard bagel and frozen functions, the most notable features are the “A Bit More” and the “Lift and Look” buttons. Like it sounds, the “A Bit More” button automatically adds a little time to the toasting cycle without having to start the process over. The “Lift and Look” button triggers the motorized carriage to automatically raise and lower without interrupting the toasting cycle. In other words, you can check on your bread as it toasts without stopping and having to start over—something that I think sets this model apart from others.
It also has an LED progress indicator that lights up as your bread or bagel toasts. The indicator sits on top of the browning control slide so you can see where your bread currently stands on a brownness scale between one and five.

Performance: Good, but not blown away
As far as performance goes, the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster did a good job. I toasted plain white bread, frozen bagels, and thickly sliced artisanal bread. All were evenly toasted and had that crusted outside but still-a-little-soft inside. However, the results weren’t significantly different from some of the other less expensive toasters I’ve used.
I’m also not entirely convinced that this can be called a four-slot toaster for modern times. The extra-long slots do comfortably fit four slices of regular-sized sandwich bread, but most bread I buy from the grocery store is heartier and considerably bigger than the plain slices my grandmother used to have. If you use these smaller size loaves you won’t have a problem fitting four slices, but if you don’t, you’ll have to stick to two slices at a time.
The two things I enjoyed the most were the “A Bit More” feature and the motorized carriage. With my previous toaster, I always found that when the regular cycle was done, I wanted the toast to be just a little darker, so I would start the cycle again and then manually stop it when I thought the toast was ready. With this toaster, I could just hit the “A Bit More” button and it was always the perfect additional toast I wanted.
The motorized carriage also made things quieter—and it was just a cool feature. Rather than a spring-loaded carriage that operates on a lever, you press a button, and this toaster positions the bread and slowly lowers and raises it, alerting you when it’s ready.
You can check on your bread as it toasts without stopping and having to start over—something that I think sets this model apart from others.
Cleaning: Standard and straightforward
The cleaning process for this toaster is pretty standard. It has a crumb tray that’s easy to pull out and rinse off when you’re done toasting. If there are any crumbs left behind in toaster slots, you simply turn it over the sink or trash and shake them loose to dispose of them.
If the outside of the toaster body gets dirty, you can wipe it down with a mild cleaner that’s suitable for stainless steel. Because the finish is brushed stainless steel, it didn’t show any fingerprints or smudges, something that I appreciated.

Price: Up there
At a retail price of around $180, the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster is definitely one of the most expensive toasters out there. It had some standout features, but with toasting capabilities that are similar to other toasters, I’m not sure it’s a price tag I can justify.
The motorized carriage also made things quieter—and it was just a cool feature.
Competition: Plenty of options with similar features
KitchenAid 4 Slice Long Slot Toaster: If you like the idea of a long slot toaster but aren’t sold on the Breville’s price tag, KitchenAid offers this model for about $80 less. While it doesn’t have any smart features, it does have pre-programmed settings for different toast levels and an “A Little Longer” setting. It also has a high-lift lever so you can toast smaller pieces of bread without worrying about losing them in the toaster forever.
Cuisinart 4-Slice Toaster: This model from Cuisinart doesn’t have the long slots of the other two options, but it does have four classic slots that you can control independently, thanks to dual panels and temperature knobs, and an extra lift lever that allows you to toast smaller pieces. It is lacking smart features and doesn’t have any “a little longer” or “a bit more” settings like the other two, but it retails for $100 less than the Breville.
Final Verdict
A good, but costly option.
The Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster has some standout features, like a motorized carriage and a “Lift and Look” function, but without additional smart features, it might not be enough to justify the higher price tag. While it toasts well, the results weren’t significantly different from other less expensive toasters I’ve tried so you have to weigh the pros and cons to decide if it’s worth the extra cost.

BROWNING CONTROL
The toasting control adjusts the degree of browning of the bread, in other words, the color of the toast. nine0029 Lower settings produce lighter toast, higher settings produce darker toast.
When setting the toasting control, remember that dry or thin slices of bread toast faster and require less adjustment. Wet or thick slices of bread will require a higher setting.
CANCEL BUTTON
The toasting process can be stopped at any time by pressing the cancel button.
HIGH LIFT FEATURE
The high lift feature uses the loading handle to help you take out the toast. When toasting is complete, simply lift the loading handle up from its original position to lift the toast and make it easier to remove. nine0005
FROZEN BREAD FUNCTION
The frozen bread function allows you to toast bread directly from the freezer. Insert the bread into the toaster, press the load knob down and then press the frozen bread button. The toaster will extend the toasting time so that the bread has time to defrost. Watch the toast so it doesn't burn.
REHEAT FUNCTION
The reheat function heats cold or cooled toast. Press the load handle down, then press the reheat button. Watch the toast carefully so it doesn't burn. Do not use the reheat function for buttered toast. nine0005
BREAD SLOTS 1 AND 2
Always use bread slots 1 and 2 when toasting one or two slices of bread. The symbol above the loading handle indicates that this handle must be engaged first.
BREAD SLOTS 3 AND 4
When toasting more than two slices of bread, use slots 3 and 4 in addition to slots 1 and 2. Lower the knob marked first, then lower the knob marked . The loading handle will not latch unless the loading handle is already in the locked position. nine0005
BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Never put bread in the toasting slot. The bread should slide easily into the toasting slots. Never toast slices of bread that have been buttered. Be especially careful when toasting foods containing sugar, jam or preserves, as there is a risk that the ingredients will get into the toaster and cause overheating. Do not use bent, damaged or broken bread in the toaster as this may cause it to jam. nine0004
Carefully remove the toaster from the box. Remove all packaging from the toast slots.
Place the toaster on a stable, safe, dry and level work surface away from edges. Bread can burn, so do not use the appliance near or under combustible materials such as curtains. Never use the toaster under hanging cabinets or shelves.
Before connecting to the power supply, check that the mains voltage is the same as indicated on the instrument. Insert the plug into a suitable outlet and make sure that the power cord does not protrude beyond the work surface. nine0029 When using the toaster for the first time, there may be a slight smell as the heating elements heat up for the first time. This is quite normal and not cause for concern. To remove the smell, simply turn on the toaster for the first time without bread.
USING YOUR TOASTER
- Set the toasting level with the toasting control. The higher the number selected, the darker the toast will be.
- Place the bread in the toast slots. You can toast one, two, three or four slices of bread. nine0029 If you are toasting one or two slices, place them in the right pair of slots. Press the loading handle down until it clicks into place. The bread will drop into the toaster and toasting will begin.
The loading handle will not latch if you are toasting one or two slices of bread and they are placed in the left slots, or if the toaster is not connected to the mains. - When toasting is finished, the loading handle will rise and the toasted bread can be taken out.
You can lift the loading handle up beyond its original position to remove the toast. nine0016 - If the toast is underdone, you can toast it again. Set the toasting control to a lower setting and keep an eye on the toast to make sure it doesn't burn.
- Browning can be stopped at any time by pressing the cancel button.
PREPARATION HINTS
- Toasting is a combination of drying and making bread, and as moisture levels vary from one bread to another, the toasting time may vary.
- For lightly toasted bread, use a lower setting than usual.
- For fresh bread or whole grain bread, use a higher value than usual.
- Bread with a very uneven surface will require a higher temperature.
- Thicker sliced breads (including crumpets) take longer to toast, sometimes significantly longer. This is because more moisture needs to be evaporated before the bread is toasted. Very thick slices of bread may require two toasting cycles. nine0016
- When toasting raisins or other fruit breads, remove any remaining raisins or fruit from the surface of the bread before placing them in the toaster. This will help prevent pieces of fruit from falling into the toaster or sticking to the protective wires in the toasting slot.
ONE PIECES
If you are toasting one slice of bread, set the toasting control to a lower setting than normal. By using a lower setting when toasting one slice of bread, it will not be over-done. nine0005
IF YOUR TOASTER CLIPS
Never use a knife or other tool to remove stuck bread. Never insert your fingers into the bread slots.
- Unplug the toaster and unplug it.
- Let the toaster cool down completely.
- Carefully remove the bread from the toaster, taking care not to damage the heating element.
CLEANING
Always turn off, unplug and allow toaster to cool before moving, cleaning or storing. Never immerse the toaster or power cord in water or any other liquid. nine0004
- Clean the outside of the toaster with a cloth, then dry thoroughly.
- Never use aggressive, abrasive or corrosive cleaners.
CRUMB REMOVAL
It is important that crumbs do not accumulate inside the toaster. Excess crumbs are unhygienic and may catch fire.
Crumbs can be removed by sliding the crumb tray out of the bottom of the toaster. You can then tip over the crumbs. Make sure the toaster is completely cool and unplugged before removing crumbs. nine0029 Never use the toaster without the crumb tray installed. Always replace the crumb tray before using the toaster.
