Original Montreat home of Billy Graham and wife for sale

The original family house of the late evangelist the Rev. Billy Graham was put up for sale in Montreat this week for $599,000.

It’s the first and only property owned by the Graham family that entered the real estate market, according to Florida-based agency Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, which is marketing the house in partnership with Kevin B. Jones, LLC.

A Charlotte native, Graham was one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century. He died at age 99 in February 2018 in Montreat.

Graham and his late wife, Ruth Bell Graham, purchased the house at 198 Mississippi Road in the late 1940s. It’s a four-bedroom, two-bathroom cottage with two levels of living space. Within walking distance of the house is the Montreat Conference Center and Montreat College.

The family lived in the house during the years that Graham made his name as “America’s Pastor. ” In 1949, Graham attracted national attention during a series of revival meetings in Los Angeles.

“It is where it all began,” said Ruth Graham, the third child of Graham, in a statement to Premier Sotheby’s. Ruth Graham is the one who put the home up for sale.

As for why she is selling the house now, the 71-year-old Ruth Graham told Premier Sotheby’s, “I have a gravely ill daughter that needs serious and expensive medical attention. I feel it is always better to be upfront with things like that.”

Baptist pastor Billy Graham, who for many years was one of the country's spiritual leaders, has died in the United States. According to the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, the 99-year-old preacher has died at his home in North Carolina.

One of the first to comment on Graham's death was the current US President Donald Trump.

“The great Billy Graham is dead. There was no one like him. He will be missed by all Christians and representatives of other religions. A very special person,” Trump wrote on his Twitter page. nine0003

For his closeness to the leaders of the United States, Graham received the nickname "pastor of presidents." He met 12 US presidents - from Harry Truman to Barack Obama - and was considered a spiritual adviser and close friend of Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon (Graham read a prayer at his inauguration in 1969) and Lyndon Johnson.

“The White House was like a hotel for me when Johnson was president. He always tried to leave me there and never let me go,” Graham himself later told his biographer. nine0003

In 1983, Graham received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan. In 2001, President Bush hosted a reception at the White House to mark Graham's 83rd birthday. In 2007, the opening ceremony of the Billy Graham Library in his hometown of Charlotte was attended by Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In 2010, then-President Obama himself visited Graham at his home in North Carolina.

Graham also maintained close relations with the leaders of several other countries of the world, and Queen Elizabeth II even awarded him an honorary knighthood in 2001. nine0003

In the middle of the 20th century, Graham was one of the most prominent members of the civil rights movement and fighters against racial segregation. Back in 1953, during a speech in Tennessee, he removed the ropes with which the organizers of the meeting separated the white and black parts of the audience, warning that whites could go to hell because of their pride. In 1957, Graham spoke with Martin Luther King at rallies in New York, which were attended by more than 2 million people, and in 1960 he made bail for the arrested King. nine0003

In the second half of the 20th century, Graham annually made the so-called crusades (crusades), addressing sermons to residents of different countries and cities. For 58 years, Graham visited 185 countries, in 1973 more than a million people visited Seoul to meet with him, and in 1992 Graham visited Pyongyang at the invitation of Kim Il Sung.

Graham first came to Moscow in 1959, then just as a tourist. In 1982, he again arrived in Moscow at the invitation of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pimen, and spoke at the international conference "Religious Figures for Saving the Sacred Gift of Life from a Nuclear Catastrophe." At 19In 84, he returned to the USSR, having visited, in particular, Tallinn, where he met with the future Patriarch Alexy II and delivered sermons several dozen times in the Evangelical and Orthodox churches of the country.

Graham visited Moscow three more times - in 1988, 1991 and 1992. In October 1992, divine services with his participation were held for three days in the Olimpiysky sports complex, about 155 thousand people attended these meetings.

“In the early 1990s, many different kinds of missionaries came to us, including those from Western countries. They sought to convert the Orthodox to their faith, and we had great concern about relations with Western Christians. I recall the meeting that took place at that time between my predecessor, Patriarch Alexy II, and your father. The patriarch told him about the difficult situation in Russia and the heavy feelings that our church had about the actions of the false brothers. And I heard from your father the answer that the Billy Graham Association will in no way go down this path, but will openly develop relations with the Russian Orthodox Church. And this promise was fulfilled,” Patriarch Kirill said in 2015 at a meeting with Graham’s son Franklin, who headed the Evangelical Association after Billy Graham retired. nine0003
