              If a smoothie is part of your morning routine or a typical post-workout snack, you'll want a blender that makes quick work of ingredients like chunks of frozen fruit and leafy greens like kale. A good smoothie blender can handle both large and small amounts of fibrous ingredients and help with a bigger variety of kitchen chores. Many full-size blenders come with personal-sized jars you can use for blending single-serve smoothies.

              The best blenders for smoothies make it easy to whip up a silky, delicious drink and are simple to clean afterward. Depending on your preferences, you may also want something with preset modes for simple one-press smoothie blending or even a battery-powered model so you can make a fresh drink during your lunch break.

              We've tested over 85 blenders, and below are our recommendations for the best for making smoothies. This list focuses on the best full-size blenders for smoothies, but most personal and bullet blenders are intended for smoothie making, so you can also find some great options on our lists of the best personal blenders and best bullet blenders. For more, check out the best blenders.

                The Vitamix 5200 is the best blender for smoothies we've tested. This sturdy, premium blender might be overkill if you want a blender for simple smoothies, but if you're looking for a durable machine and the smoothest blends, it's a great option. It comes with a 64-ounce jar to accommodate big batches and easily makes an incredibly smooth puree with ingredients that some blenders struggle with, like leafy greens or fruit skin. It only comes with one jar, but it's fantastic for blending smaller batches when you want a smoothie for one. It's also extremely well-built and has a long seven-year warranty (although it depends on where you buy it).

                Its controls are simple, consisting of a speed dial and a switch for pulsing. That's all you need for any recipe, but it means you stop the blender manually when it's done. If you want features like automatic blending programs, you might prefer the Vitamix A3500. As part of Vitamix's 'Ascent' Series, it's a more expensive option with additional features, including five blending programs and a companion app that you can use to access more. The A3500's jar is also dishwasher-safe, unlike the 5200. Unfortunately, this means you need to clean the 5200 by hand, but running it with soap and water will do most of the work for you after making a smoothie.

                It's not as well-built as the more expensive Vitamix, but if you don't want to spend as much, the KitchenAid K400 is a great option for all kinds of smoothie recipes. It has a smaller 56-ounce capacity, but it doesn't take long to make a velvety smoothie. Like the Vitamix 5200, problem ingredients like seeds and pineapple disappear into the mix. It has no problem crushing ice, meaning you can add ice cubes or chunks of frozen fruit. Even if you fill the jar to its full capacity, you only need to blend for a couple of minutes to get fantastic results.

                The jar and lid are dishwasher-safe, but it's more annoying to clean by hand than the Vitamix blender since the blades and lid require more attention with a brush or sponge. Unlike our top pick, it has an automatic blending program for smoothies that lets you walk away from the blender and have it automatically stop when it's done. It has an excellent build quality overall, but even the gears are made of plastic, and its one-year warranty is much shorter than the Vitamix. While it won't matter for smoothie-making, its motor isn't as powerful, and it's not as easy to use for hard jobs like making nut butter, which you might want to consider if you're looking for a versatile machine.

                If you're looking for something less expensive and don't care as much about versatility, look at the Ninja Mega Kitchen System BL770. This blender can make great smoothies in its 72-ounce pitcher, although if your recipe includes fibrous ingredients like kale, you'll see small unprocessed bits left over even if you blend for a while. That's not the case with the more expensive blenders listed here, but most people will still be happy with the result, and it will be less noticeable if your usual recipe includes easier ingredients like bananas or mangoes. Also included are a pair of personal jars that make remarkably well-blended smoothies. The personal jars each come with a to-go lid, so you don't need to transfer your drink into another cup before heading out.

                There are a few other downsides compared to the Vitamix 5200 or the KitchenAid K400. Whichever jar you're using, it takes longer to make a smoothie. When blending in one of the personal jars, you need to hold down the 'Single-Serve' button constantly, which is a bit annoying. It doesn't offer any automatic blending programs. There's no two-part lid for the main jar either, although you might not care if you're mainly using it for smoothies. The blade design is another issue, as the very sharp spiral blades make cleaning by hand tricky and a bit dangerous. You can always put the jars, lids, and blades in the dishwasher.

                If you're looking for a budget blender for smoothies, go for the Oster Pro 1200. This cheaper blender doesn't feel as well-built as the more expensive options. It's not as well-suited for serving a crowd as the Ninja Mega Kitchen System BL770 since it has a smaller 48-ounce main jar and a single 24-ounce personal jar. That said, it does a fantastic job of processing fibrous ingredients, whether you're blending a big batch or a single-serve. While it can't match the perfectly smooth blend you get with the Vitamix 5200 or KitchenAid K400, most people will be very happy with the results.

                The personal jar comes with a resealable lid, so you can easily bring your smoothie with you on the go. The main jar is made of glass, which you might find is less prone to scratching and discoloration than plastic containers. The blades are removable, which makes the blender easy to clean by hand, and all its components are dishwasher-safe. Three preset speed settings don't give you a lot of control over the blending speed, but it has a few programs for automatic blending. This blender's main downside is its mediocre build quality. The gear design, in particular, may not be very durable. Then again, it's available with a three-year U.S. warranty, which is longer than most blenders, although it depends on where you live and buy your blender.

                Blending up an early-morning smoothie is less appealing if your blender is loud. You can't avoid the fact that blenders make some noise, but you might want to avoid the loudest models if you have roommates or family members who tend to be sleeping when you're blending. The best quieter blender for smoothies that we've tested is the Hamilton Beach Professional Quiet Blender. It uses a plastic dome to muffle noise when running, making it significantly quieter than most blenders we've tested. It's also very well-built, very easy to clean by hand, and has an automatic program for smoothies as well as a wide range of speed settings.

                It has a much smaller capacity than the similarly-priced Ninja Mega Kitchen System BL770 since its jar only holds 32 ounces. You can use the noise dome as a pitcher but not for blending, so it's not the best blender for serving a crowd. That said, it's superb for making silky-smooth drinks with ingredients like leafy greens. It can make snow-like crushed ice, so it won't struggle to process frozen fruit or ice cubes. However, if you're concerned with your blender's overall versatility, keep in mind that it's not very well-suited for making thick mixtures like nut butter.

                Personal blenders are specifically designed for blending up individual-sized smoothies. If you don't need a big capacity jar and don't care as much about having multiple speed settings, the Ninja Foodi Power Nutri DUO is a fantastic option. Its short, compact motor base makes it easier to bring in and out of a cupboard or store on your counter. The pair of 24-ounce personal jars can create a velvety blend with smoothie ingredients like leafy greens and berries. Just like the Vitamix 5200, it can produce a nearly perfectly smooth blend very quickly. You can take your smoothie with you in the same jar since each one comes with a matching spout lid.

                While you're limited by its smaller capacity, it's versatile. The 14-ounce 'Smoothie Bowl Maker' jar has rotating arms that help a lot with thick mixtures, which is nice if you like making spoonable smoothie bowls with frozen fruits. It also easily crushes ice, meaning you can add a few ice cubes to your smoothie with no worries. However, it's very loud. If you're looking for a quiet personal blender for smoothies, the Βeast Ηealth Βlender makes much less noise and similarly fantastic smoothies. Not all of its components are dishwasher-safe, and it only comes with one jar, but it's better built and has a modern aesthetic you might prefer.

                If you're looking for a blender for single-serve smoothies, you can also see more options on our list of the best personal blenders.

              Notable Mentions

              • BlendJet 2: The ΒlendJet 2 is a battery-powered personal blender you can use to blend a smoothie at work or when traveling. Unlike the Ninja Foodi Power Nutri DUO, it doesn't fully liquefy ingredients like kale, so it makes a grainy smoothie if you add fibrous fruits or veggies. It's a good option if you want something portable. See our review
              • Ninja Chef Blender: The Ninja Chef Blender can make an extremely smooth blend with common smoothie ingredients like leafy greens and blueberries, similar to the KitchenAid K400. Unlike that blender, it comes with a personal jar and a to-go lid. However, you can't use the personal jar for blending without buying another set of blades separately. It's also extremely loud. See our review
              • Wolf Gourmet Pro-Performance: The Wolf Gourmet Pro-Performance is a premium full-size blender that performs similarly to the Vitamix 5200. It's quieter and easier to clean by hand but pricier than our top pick and not as well-built as most Vitamix blenders. Its five-year U.S. warranty is shorter, although it depends on where you buy it. Our above recommendations are what we think are currently the best smoothie blenders for most people. We factor in the price (a cheaper blender wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't worth it), feedback from our visitors, and availability (no blenders that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).

              If you want to choose for yourself, here is the list of all our blender reviews for smoothies. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. Tested & Approved

              The Ninja Nutri Pro Compact Personal Blender is the overall winner for our testers: It's well-designed and expertly pulverizes, crushes, and blends. For a portable pick, the battery-operated BlendJet 2 is recharged via a USB cable and can make several smoothies on one full charge.

              If you have limited kitchen space, live in a dorm or small apartment, or just don't like the look of large appliances filling up your countertops, a smaller-sized personal blender may be a better choice over a full-size machine.

              Personal blenders are designed to blend single servings of smoothies and shakes that can be taken on the go, often in the same jar they were blended in. And, like standard blenders, personal blenders are often powerful enough to pulse and puree small batches of dips, sauces, and batters, or crush ice for frozen drinks.

              A personal blender is a must-have kitchen gadget for creating delicious smoothies to go—perfect for busy lifestyles, kids, and even travel. We considered power, portability, and budget when researching and home-testing the top personal blenders available on the market today.

              Ninja Nutri Pro Blender Review

              Who else recommends it? 95% of 13,900+ Amazon reviewers rated this product 4 stars or above.

              The Ninja company is known for its innovative appliances and was one of the first to sell personal-sized blenders. Although the market is now crowded, Ninja blenders are still user favorites because they check all the boxes of power, usability, and smart design. This one boasts 900 watts of blending power that can pulverize fruits and vegetables, turning them into a silky-smooth drink. Our tester was also able to make hummus, salsa, and pudding.

              This blender can also crush ice, so slushy iced tea or lemonade is possible on hot days. Our tester did note that the blender did best with liquid ingredients, ice, or recipes with at least minimal liquid content (like the hummus)—Ninja claims the Nutri Pro can chop veggies, but this "tended to create uneven pieces," she said.

              The twist-on spout lids make it easy to take a drink to go. This unit includes an 18-ounce cup and a 24-ounce cup, each with a lid. More are available in case everyone in the family needs their own. For easy cleaning, the removable parts are all dishwasher safe, so this is as simple to care for as it is to use.

              What We Don't Like

              With a 900-watt motor, the NutriBullet Pro is the perfect replacement for a high-powered blender in small kitchens. It gets sauces, soups, and smoothies as smooth as you want them, and even thick contents don't need to be opened up and re-stirred to be thoroughly blended. After years of heavy use, this blender maintains its efficacy beautifully.

              This blender comes with two BPA-free 32-ounce blender cups, which give you the option to work with larger batch sizes than most personal blenders (although they're still great for individual smoothies and small-batch dips). You also get two cup rings, two handled lip rings, two to-go lids for convenience, and a recipe book. The blender cups lock into the base for hands-free blending. The motor is not meant to run for more than 60 seconds at a time, but that ends up being more than enough for even tough blending jobs.

              The blender cups, blades, lids, and rings are easy to clean in the dishwasher or by hand. The NutriBullet Pro is one of the more expensive personal blender options, but its durability, power, and versatility are well worth the price.

              Cuisinart Compact Portable Blending/Chopping System Review

              This personal blender packs plenty of power with a 350-watt motor. There are controls for pulsing, low-speed blending, and high-speed blending, which are housed on an electronic touchpad with LED indicator lights. Our tester found everything about the design to be intuitive and user-friendly.

              The 15-piece set includes a 32-ounce blender jar, which allows you to make four 8-ounce smoothie servings. It also comes with a blending blade, chopping blade, 8-ounce chopping cup, and set of four 16-ounce travel cups. This means multiple people can enjoy a smoothie at once, making this a great choice for families and larger households. The cups come with lids and are BPA-free and dishwasher safe for fast cleanup.

              This system goes beyond just smoothies; our tester successfully made cashew butter, crushed ice, and ground coffee beans. The one complaint she had is that it does get loud and shake a bit on the highest setting.

              Most personal blenders use proprietary cups or jars for blending, and extras can be expensive when you need more jars. This blender is designed to work with standard Mason jars, so you can blend and drink right out of jars you already own with the Mason jar adapter.

              Many reviewers found it very easy to attach their own Mason jars, although some note that the Mason jar adapter can sometimes get stuck to the blade mechanism, which may make it tricky to remove. It also includes its own large and small cups with cup lids, as well as Mason jars, Mason jar lids, a commuter lid, a grinding blade, and a chopping blade. Tribest also offers an XL version if you want even larger cup options.

              The blender has a 200-watt motor, so it’s not as powerful as some, but it’s sufficient for smoothies, shakes, and sauces.

              Most personal blenders look utilitarian and ready to hide in the cabinet, but this one has an attractive retro style that gives it some personality, so it will look good living on the counter for daily use. It includes a large 20. 3-ounce plastic drinking jar, a 16.9-ounce glass mason jar with a handle, and two lids. While this does include a glass Mason jar, the threads on the blender are not compatible with standard canning jars, so they can’t be used as replacements.

              BlendJet 2 Review

              Designed with portability in mind, the BlendJet 2 can go anywhere you do. The blender cup and base function as a single unit and can easily be tossed in a gym bag, large purse, or even luggage. It is battery-operated and recharges via a USB-C cable, so it can be charged in the car or plugged into a laptop and used to blend anywhere, no wall outlet required. After testing the original BlendJet One, we were excited to get our hands on the next-generation model, which offers a larger-capacity blending cup (16 ounces), more power, and longer battery life. This new version is powerful enough to crush ice cubes easily.

              Our tester particularly liked that the BlendJet 2 can get at least 15 uses out of every full charge—a significant improvement over the previous version. Another upgrade is the measurement marks on the cup, which makes on-the-go eyeballing of ingredients simple. Like the original version, this model is self-cleaning for added convenience.

              It comes in a range of fun colors, and our reviewer was impressed with how fast it worked (even faster than the BlendJet One). The only downside is the limited capacity—this is definitely a blender for one. Still, for making quick protein shakes at the gym or blending up simple smoothies while away from home, our tester highly recommends this model. Our tester was also sent free samples of the brand's JetPacks, which are powdered single-serving fruit, veggie, and protein smoothies that can be whipped up quickly in the blender, and found them "surprisingly tasty."

              Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Compact Blender Review

              This personal blender is battery-operated, so you can use it anywhere: camping, in the office, by the pool, whatever. The rechargeable lithium battery fully charges in two hours via a USB cable, which can be connected to a standard wall plug or the ports on your computer or in your car. A full battery provides power to run the blender for 20 minutes, which is enough to make a dozen or more smoothies between charges.

              It comes with one 16-ounce BPA-free cup plus a travel lid so you can take your smoothies and shakes on the go. (Extra cups and lids are also available for sale.) You fill the cup with whatever needs blending, then screw on the four-prong blade and flip the whole thing over to lock it into the machine. It's got plenty of power, able to puree a single serving of soup or crush ice for frozen drinks, but our tester found that it didn't quite get her smoothies as smooth as a full-size model. The cup also doesn't have measurement or fill-line markings, which means you need to measure your ingredients separately before they go in.

              The EvolutionX is simple to use, with a power button that turns the machine on and also turns on the one-minute auto-shutoff blend mode. The stainless steel accents and streamlined shape look good on countertops, too, though the cordless feature is designed for travel. Once charged, you can take it with you to just about anywhere, although the unit with its base is not exactly small enough to be truly handheld.

              This versatile blender includes cups from 24 to 64 ounces that all attach to the same blade base, allowing you to make a smoothie for one all the way up to a pitcher of frozen daiquiris for your next party. The base is a bit bigger than other personal blenders, but it's still got a smaller footprint than a typical full-size one while offering an impressive 1,200 watts of power.

              It comes with three different-sized cups, the two smaller of which have travel lids, with a vented cap for the largest cup that lets you use it on hot soup. What We Don't Like

              If you're making baby food at home, you don't want one huge blender pitcher full of pureed carrots; you need small amounts of many different foods, and the personal blender is an ideal tool for just that. Nuby specializes in toys and tools for babies, and its Mighty Blender is designed expressly for homemade baby food. The larger of its two blender cups has a steamer insert you can use to cook food in the microwave before blending, and it comes with lots of small individual containers and a six-compartment freezer tray for easy storage and transport. There's even a separate milling blade that can turn oats or other grains into baby cereal.

              This is a pretty low-wattage blender, but turning soft-cooked fruits and vegetables into pureed baby food doesn't require a ton of power. It also isn't the most heavy-duty machine out there, though its relatively low price and array of useful accessories might make it worthwhile for new parents.

              Final Verdict

              The Ninja Nutri Pro gets the top spot because it's not only fast and powerful—great for those with tight schedules—but also compact and easy to clean. If you travel a lot or love making smoothies at work, we recommend the BlendJet 2, which is battery-operated, recharged via USB, and able to make several smoothies on a single full charge.

              What to Look for in a Personal Blender

              Blender Cup Capacity and Quantity

              How big is your morning smoothie? Do you like the idea of blending once and then portioning it into several cups, or do your family members have different flavor preferences? Look for a kit that's the right size for you. Larger cups can, of course, blend more at once, but they're less portable. Many personal blender models come with more than one small cup, which lets you make a kale smoothie and then a strawberry-banana one without having to wash everything out in between. (Most of the brands on our list sell additional blender cups, so you can buy as many as you need.)

              Lids and Accessories

              Some personal blenders come with travel lids that screw right onto the cup, which is a lot more convenient than pouring the cup into a separate mug to get your smoothie into the car. Some screw-on lids even include a mug-style handle for easy gripping. Other blender models offer multiple sets of blades for chopping and grinding, while cordless models can charge their batteries via USB and don't need a wall plug in the car or on the trail.

              Power

              While wattage isn’t the perfect indicator of a blender’s power, it’s a pretty good hint. In general, the higher the wattage, the more powerful the appliance, and the higher the price. If you typically blend softer foods like bananas and yogurt, into liquid-heavy smoothies, you don’t need as much power as someone who plans on blending dense vegetables, ice, and frozen fruits. Higher power can also mean that the blender will be noisier—which might be a consideration if you’re blending in the morning while your family’s still asleep or have an easy-to-wake infant.

              FAQs

              How powerful are personal blenders?

              In general, personal blenders aren't as powerful as standard-sized blenders—more powerful motors are simply bigger and heavier—but there is some overlap: 1,000 watts is on the weaker end for a full-size blender and the stronger end for a personal one. On the other hand, the smoothies, sauces, and shakes you'd typically use a personal blender for don't need extreme levels of power.

              Can you put frozen fruit in a personal blender?

              You can put frozen fruit in a personal blender, but the key to getting a smooth blend is adding the right ratio of liquid to frozen ingredients. Check the user manual for recommendations. If you find yourself ending up with unblended bits, try letting the frozen fruit sit out at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before blending to partially thaw. If that doesn't help, you might need a more powerful blender.

              Can a personal blender crush ice?

              Some personal blenders are powerful enough to crush ice, which is a necessary feature if you like making icy coffee drinks, slushies, and frozen margaritas. Higher-wattage blenders will be better at crushing ice quickly, while weaker models will take too long to break up large cubes to keep the ice frozen. Trying to crush ice in a low-end blender isn't unsafe or anything, just ineffective.

                  Submersible and stationary. The first option must be immersed in a bowl with ingredients, holding it by the handle. They don’t always grind food well, especially if the smoothie contains nuts, but they are good at mashing soft vegetables and fruits. It must be remembered that there may be small pieces in drinks. Stationary devices are a flask with a lid on a massive base with a motor inside. In the container itself there are cutting elements that can grind even solid products. The stationary type is more suitable for smoothies and cocktails. nine0003

                  • power;

                  The quality of the resulting product depends on the power. The more power, the better the grinding of the product. For the processing of dense products, you need from 600 W of the motor. You can find more powerful models, but they will cost much more. 300-350 watts is enough for cocktails.

                  • body and jug materials;

                  The jug must be made of durable materials, as it will grind solid elements. A glass product will be better and stronger than a plastic one. Plus, plastic often gets soaked and gets an unpleasant aftertaste. The body can be made of metal or plastic or a combination of materials. Metal is more durable and stronger, but more expensive. nine0003

                  The fixed view allows you to set the mode in which the instrument will operate until the end of the cycle. Adaptive adjustment allows you to change the speed directly in the cooking process. The pulse mode is intended for more thorough grinding of products. Turbo mode speeds up the work in the blender for a short time.

                  • nozzles;

                  The functionality of the blender depends on the attachments. Types of nozzles: a removable knife on a leg (usually made of plastic), built-in chopper knives, a whisk for cocktails with foam. For large amounts of ice, a special ice-crushing attachment can be used. With a small amount of ice, a standard nozzle is enough for this. The vacuum pump will create a vacuum for the containers. The nozzle filter clears of a suspension. nine0003

                  • jug volume;

                  It needs to reach 1.5 liters. Smoothies and shakes are usually made with many foods and in large quantities, so the volume of the flask must be appropriate.

                  • number of speeds;

                  The choice of speeds is influenced by the power of the motor: the larger it is, the greater the speed of rotation of the blades. It is desirable that there be at least two speeds. In some models, there may be up to ten.
