It may surprise some people, but our top pick is this battery-powered model from RYOBI. The zero-emissions model easily matches gas mowers in terms of power, cutting through thick grass with ease while demonstrating impressive maneuverability. Plus, it's fume-free and practically silent, generating only minimal noise. (Our tester put a similar model from RYOBI to work on her 10-acre farm and was blown away by the results.)

The RYOBI electric mower has a 38-inch deck, and its 48-volt batteries can run for two and a half hours per charge, allowing you to cut up to 2.5 acres in a single session. The two-blade deck has 12 different cutting heights, and the mower offers convenient features like cruise control, LED headlights, and USB charging. There are no belts, spark plugs, or filters, making it easier to maintain than a traditional riding mower.

Our only complaints? The seat gets uncomfortable if you're mowing for long periods, and it doesn't have a mulch setting. Still, if you're in the market for a reliable ride-on mower and ready to switch to a battery-powered model, this is your best bet.

This mower has a hydrostatic transmission that eliminates the need for shifting—just push the pedal and go—and there are 12 cutting height positions to choose from. This Ryobi Electric Riding Lawn Mower offers consistent cutting power for up to two and a half hours on one charge (enough time to cut as much as 3. 5 acres). You'll also appreciate the low maintenance ease of caring for this mower since it doesn't have belts, spark plugs, or filters to maintain like its gas counterparts. This mower also has a wide 54-inch cutting deck that has an adjustable height, so you can maintain the ideal cut on your lawn.

The maximum speed is 7 mph going forward and 4 mph in reverse, and it's easy to turn thanks to the long handle bars. However, some people may experience a learning curve with the handle bars compared to a traditional steering wheel. In addition to its powerful cutting options, this mower's control panel is incredibly user-friendly and includes settings for headlights, speed adjustments, battery level, and more. While we love how easy this electric mower is to use, we recognize that keeping it charged may be a chore for some users. Be sure to recharge before each use for optimum cutting time. For your convenience, this mower does plug into a traditional 120-volt outlet.

The Husqvarna YTh34V54 V-Twin Riding Lawn Mower is powerful enough to easily cut an average lawn, but also delicate enough to conduct tight turns and perform several other tasks thanks to its accessory compatibility. If you choose, or need to purchase, this mower's additional accessories, you'll have the capabilities of a mulcher, tow-spreader, bagger, and scoop all with one piece of equipment. Aside from its impressive and reliable Intek V-Twin motor, this mower is also impressively affordable compared to other larger deck mowers on the market.

While operating, you'll experience the ease of the ergonomic steering wheel and hydrostatic transmission, which ensure a smooth ride every time. The electric cutting deck engagement also allows you to simply flip a switch on the dashboard to engage its function while maintaining steady control of the mower. The high back seat also offers a comfortable ride, if you have a particularly large yard. Our only recommendation for this mower is to use caution when mowing on particularly uneven terrain as the wide-cutting deck is harder to navigate.

The lawn tractor has a 42-inch deck with anti-scalp wheels to prevent turf damage, and the machine’s 19 HP 544cc engine will make quick work of overgrown grass.

The Troy-Bilt Bronco has a step-through frame that offers more leg room, and it offers a mid-seat back and rubber footpads to keep you comfortable. The machine has a rear hitch to pull garden carts, sprayers, and spreaders, and there are also bagging and mulching accessories available separately. The 7 Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mowers of 2023

Final Verdict

The RYOBI 48V Brushless 38 in. Electric Riding Lawn Mower is a top choice among riding lawn mowers thanks to its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, powerful performance, and ease of maintenance. If you prefer a gas mower, consider the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro LT 42 in. 19.5 HP Gas Riding Lawn Tractor, which boasts a hydrostatic transmission and can be used with a variety of multi-season accessories.

Power Source

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to buy a gas- or electric-powered riding lawn mower. Gas mowers are generally more powerful, but they’re louder, less eco-friendly, and require more maintenance. Electric mowers, on the other hand, are typically less powerful with a shorter run time, but they’re quieter, easier to start, and better for the environment. While electric mowers may require consistent charging, they often don't require as much maintenance compared to gas models that have spark plugs, belts, and filters that must be maintained over time.

Deck Size

The deck size of a lawn mower dictates how wide a path it cuts—larger decks cut wider paths on each pass. A deck size of between 30 to 60 inches is recommended for most homeowners. Bigger decks are better for lawns with few obstacles and turns, while smaller decks will be helpful if you have to mow around trees or garden beds. Keep in mind that a mower's deck size will also impact its turning radius—except for zero-turn mowers, which can manage wider decks thanks to their overall design—and will also make it more challenging to navigate uneven terrain.

Grass Clipping

Don’t forget to consider how the lawn mower handles grass clippings. Some machines simply spit clippings back out onto your lawn, while others have options to bag or mulch the cut grass. The best option for you simply depends on how you prefer to handle your clippings. Some mowers will come with mulching accessories, and others will require a separate purchase for mulch kits.

Classification of tractors: what types of tractors are there

Scientific and technological progress consistently embraces new areas - both the automotive industry and the tractor industry are being improved. Agriculture is moving from the stage of semi-automated work, when a person drives a tractor, to fully automated work, when the unit executes the entire program according to the algorithms and commands that were previously set. But in order to work with equipment, you need to know its design, types and methods of application.

Tractors are distinguished by mover, frame, traction class and purpose. Depending on the type of equipment, it performs various tasks in agricultural, municipal or construction areas. The units are capable of performing most of the tasks that heavy and high-torque machines can only face.

Classification by type of propeller

The tractor propeller is responsible for moving the implement. According to the type of movement, the equipment is classified into wheeled and tracked. For a wheeled unit, the traction force is created due to the movement of the wheels, and for a tracked unit, due to the tracks.

Tracked vehicles move better over difficult and difficult terrain than wheeled ones, so they are used on difficult terrain.

Wheeled

The traction force of a wheeled tractor is generated by the movement of the wheels. Cars are both four-wheeled and three-wheeled. The three-wheel machine is designed for cotton plantings to maintain row spacing. The wheels to which the movement is transmitted from the engine are called driving, and the wheels that guide the equipment are called guides. Wheel formulas are 4x4 (four-wheel drive) and 4x2 (rear-wheel drive). Units in which the movement from the engine is transmitted to four wheels are all-terrain tractors.

On a wheeled vehicle, you can move on public roads, unlike vehicles with a caterpillar type of propulsion, but the grip on the ground on a wheeled unit is much lower than on a caterpillar one. On soft and wet ground, the wheels can bog down.

Four-wheel drive machines do not skid on loose ground, but due to their large mass they cause damage to the soil, so heavy tractors are equipped with extra-wide wheels, two or three pairs on both axles.

Crawler

The advantage of a caterpillar tractor over a wheeled tractor is stable movement on soft, wet ground, caterpillars cannot dig into the ground like wheels. The track rollers move along the track chain, distributing the weight of the machine over the entire surface of the mover, so this technique causes less damage to the soil.

The undercarriage of the caterpillar unit consists of a frame, propulsion and suspension. The design of the skeleton can be either frame or semi-frame. For example, the frame of the DT-75MV tractor consists of longitudinal and transverse bars, which are interconnected by rivets. The track rollers are connected to the frame of the equipment by means of a suspension, which transfers the load to them and is responsible for smooth movement over rough terrain.

The traction force of a tracked vehicle is greater than that of a wheeled vehicle. The main disadvantage of this unit is that the caterpillar tractor cannot move on public roads, because the caterpillars destroy the asphalt.

Classification by frame type

The frame is the main part of the machine that bears the load. All the main elements of the machine are fixed to the frame. According to the type of frame, the units are:

Frame

The frame consists of longitudinal spars, on which the transverse beams are fixed to install the main units of the machine. The mass of frame equipment is greater than semi-frame or frameless, but its advantage is rigidity, strength and easy access to individual mechanisms. If repairs are needed, a separate part of the mechanism can be removed and replaced without disassembling the entire unit.

The frame frame is mounted on vehicles with a caterpillar type of mover. Attachments are fixed with brackets on the frame.

Semi-frame

Semi-frame frame consists of cast housings, on which the main components of the equipment are attached and several spars for mounting the power unit. The advantage of this type is the availability of maintenance of the main components of the unit, but access to secondary mechanisms is difficult.

Semi-frame machines are more common than others. This frame is used on universal, agricultural and municipal vehicles. For example, the MTZ-80 tractor is based on a semi-frame frame.

Frameless

The frameless machine frame is the connected engine and transmission housings that form a common system for securing secondary parts and mechanisms. Frameless equipment is compact, but the maintenance and repair of these units is difficult, because access to individual nodes is possible only when the main body is removed. For example, a frameless frame is installed on the DT-20 tractor.

Drawbar

The drawbar is the tractor power specifications. Determining the power of the unit through the traction class is used only in Russia and the CIS, in other countries the power is determined only by the number of horsepower of the engine.

The advantage of traction class classification is that power is determined not only by the number of horsepower of the engine, but also by the type of chassis and machine weight. The division into classes according to the traction class is standardized in accordance with GOST 27021-86.

Connecting attachments is also distributed according to the traction class, the higher it is, the heavier and more productive the equipment is connected.

Classification by purpose

Tractors are used in solving problems where powerful traction is required for transporting goods and equipment:

Agricultural

Agricultural machinery works the soil, plants and harvests crops, mows hay, etc.

By purpose they are distinguished:

The advantage of agricultural machines is that attachments are quickly connected and disconnected. They move in higher gears, the equipment is connected to a universal trailer mechanism, therefore, an engine with an increased number of revolutions, a multi-stage gearbox, a creeper, a three-point attachment system are installed on the tractor.

Industrial

Industrial machinery is used for construction and earthworks. These are sedentary machines that perform static work - a bulldozer, an excavator, a pipelayer and other equipment. Feature of industrial units:

Industrial machines use caterpillar type propulsion because the enormous weight of the unit is distributed over the entire length of the track and prevents tipping. The equipment has a shifted center of gravity, since the weight of stationary equipment reaches a third of the mass of the entire unit, counterweights are installed to balance. Operating speed is not more than 5 km/h. Unlike agricultural machines, industrial tractors are designed for narrowly focused tasks, for example, for bulldozer-loosening work.

Skid

Skid is the delivery of felled trees from the cutting site to the loading area. To accomplish this task, skidders have been developed, on which special equipment is installed for grabbing wood. The basis of this technique is high-torque agricultural machines that can move over rugged complex terrain.

In addition to a special platform for trees, a winch for checker skidding of the forest is installed, as on the TDT-55 tractor, or a hydraulic grip for checkerless skidding, as on the LT-187 tractor. The undercarriage on these units has a large footprint, which reduces the impact on the ground.

Army

Heavy equipment has long been used in the armed forces, for example, during the First World War, tractors were modified for armored vehicles, but today the technical characteristics of army vehicles are much higher than those of tractors.

An army tractor is used to move artillery pieces and other military trailers. Aggregates with high traffic are used to prepare the area for operations. The main characteristic of the army vehicle is its cross-country ability, high cross-country ability and high tractive power.

Which tractor to choose

When choosing a tractor, you need to consider its purpose. If you need a machine to work on a summer cottage or farm plot, then you should choose a unit with a capacity of up to 50 hp. More powerful machines are not as maneuverable, and in terms of functionality, small machines are not inferior to more powerful ones.

To perform daily work in the summer cottage, you need a mini tractor with a power of up to 20 hp. Fighter T-15 is a machine with a 15 hp power unit installed under the hood. The technique quickly performs agricultural tasks that are done manually in a summer cottage: plowing, haymaking, digging potatoes. Torque from the power unit to the propulsion unit is transmitted by a belt drive. To connect the hitch, a single-point hitch is installed.

If the equipment is needed not only for everyday tasks, but also for the transportation of goods, snow removal or your plot is more than 1 hectare, then it is better to opt for the Dongfeng 244C tractor. The unit is equipped with a hermetic heated cabin, in which it is comfortable to work in any weather. 24 hp engine If you are a farm owner, Dong Feng will be your reliable assistant.

To solve more complex tasks: cleaning bulk materials, excavation, you should choose SCOUT T-504S. This is a new tractor in the Scout line. The machine is equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 50 hp. The machine is designed to withstand harsh climatic conditions. Attachments are connected to a three-point attachment system of the second category with a load capacity of 880 kg. The tractor is suitable for agricultural and municipal work, a front loader and a mounted excavator are connected to the machine. The unit is suitable for farms and utilities.

It is possible that it is possible that for some readers, the following will be a revelation, but in fact, the key malfunctions with which the car cannot be operated are strictly regulated. According to paragraph 2.3.1 of the Road Traffic Rules in force for 2020, immediately before leaving, the driver must ensure that the car is in good technical condition and make sure that the following systems work without problems: brake system, steering, hitch (as part of a road train), headlights and rear position lights (at night or in conditions of poor visibility), as well as the windshield wiper on the driver's side.

iStock

In other words, there are exactly five nodes that must be checked before each trip. According to the traffic rules, if at least one problem from the list is identified, the driver must eliminate it, and if this is not possible, he should go to the place of parking or repair, observing the necessary precautions. Responsibility for a technical malfunction of a passenger car, bus, road train, trailer, motorcycle, moped, tractor and other self-propelled vehicles lies entirely with the driver.

Let's look at what is meant by failures of each of the five systems.

1. Brake system

Photo: iStock

Let's take a typical situation - before the trip you noticed the fact of leakage of brake fluid from the line, but in reality it turns out that the car brakes normally.

At the same time, the trip must be canceled and the car transported (preferably by tow truck) to the service. Damaged hoses, breakage of the booster, as well as jamming of the brake actuators, are fraught with serious consequences on the road.

SDA also prescribes to make sure that the hand brake works reliably, namely, the ability to hold a car with a full load on a slope of up to 16 percent inclusive, cars and buses in running order - on a slope of up to 23 percent inclusive, trucks and road trains in running gear condition - on a slope of up to 31 percent inclusive.

2. Steering

Photo: iStock

Regarding steering, the SDA prohibits steering play of more than 10 degrees for cars, 20 degrees for buses and 25 degrees for trucks.

In addition, it is forbidden to operate the machine if the device for fixing the position of the steering column is inoperative and the power steering provided for by the design is absent (or broken). Read - if a hydro or electric booster "flew" on the road, you cannot continue moving, no matter how much you want it. You should call a tow truck. Operation is also prohibited when the horn is not working.

3. Tow hitch

Photo: iStock

In the case of "passenger cars", this is a tow bar designed for towing trailers. Operation is prohibited, for example, if the safety cables provided for by the design are missing or faulty, and there are also backlashes in the joints of the motorcycle frame with the frame of the side trailer.

Let's clarify that this ban is completely justified. After all, if a trailer comes off on the move, it turns into a kind of unguided projectile aimed at other road users.

4. Lighting

Photo: iStock

lighting fixtures from vehicles of other makes and models.

At the same time, the headlights must be adjusted according to GOST and not contaminated. And by the way, let's dispel the myth that traffic rules supposedly allow driving with one headlight on the driver's side in the dark. The rules say - we quote - a ban on "non-burning or missing headlights", as well as brake lights. At the same time, in the daytime, the SDA allows the use of daytime running lights, and if they are not provided for by the design, “foglights” instead of dipped headlights.

Let's clarify that you can be fined both for missing windshield wipers and for inadequate (inconsistent with the prescribed algorithm) working wipers, as well as non-working windshield washers provided for by the design. If the inspector sees that during rain or snowfall the windshield wiper on the driver's side does not work on the machine, he is obliged to demand that the driver stop driving and eliminate the malfunction.
