The 10 Best Riding Lawn Mowers in 2022 (Including John Deere, Cub Cadet, and Troy- Bilt Models)

Lawn equipment that rides just as comfortably as a car is a perk for anyone with large tracts of land requiring regular mowing. Riding mowers can make cutting acres of lawn considerably more comfortable than any other mower, including electric mowers or walk-behind mowers. Most mowers come with a cup holder, snack storage area, padded and tall seats, and headlights.

As technology has improved over the years, riding mower options have increased. Rather than only finding gas-powered riding lawn mowers, battery-operated riding lawn mower models are growing in popularity also, and, for smaller lawns, they are replacing gas models. Of course, gas mowers are still the most powerful option for mowing several acres of land as they can easily handle thick, tall grass without having to worry about running out of battery.
Best Riding Lawn Mowers—Buying Guide
Riding mowers come in all shapes and sizes, with different options available for medium to larger lawns.
Types of Ride-on Mowers
Below we’ve covered some of the ride-on lawn mower options available.
Automatic Transmission
Like a car’s transmission, an auto transmission on a riding mower means you won’t need to shift gears on the machine. Some even have cruise control to make it easier to mow huge tracts of land. The only downside is this type of transmission is that it requires more maintenance than a manual mower.
Manual Transmission
Manual transmission riding mowers require drivers to shift gears to control the mower. Like manual cars, these mowers are less expensive, offer improved fuel economy, and don’t need as much maintenance as an automatic transmission model. If the operator already knows how to drive a stick shift on a car, there will be less of a learning curve when it comes to operating these types of mowers.
Hydrostatic Transmission
Similar to an automatic transmission model, hydrostatic transmission mowers doesn’t require drivers to shift gears. The main difference with these mowers is this type of transmission delivers power to the engine via fluid rather than belts. Even though this is the most expensive type of mower model, this machine offers a smooth ride and lasts longer than manual or automatic lawn mowers. Some of these hydrostatic transmission models are available with single-cylinder engines.
Zero-Turn Mowers
A zero-turn lawn mower has a zero-degree turning radius that makes maneuvering around obstacles a cinch. The mowers are ideal for large yards with many trees, landscaped areas, or bushes. A zero-turn mower can take some getting used to as it isn’t controlled by foot pedals, but rather, is controlled by lap bars. Although it is possible to purchase a model with a steering wheel, they are quite costly.
Lawn Tractors
Lawn tractors are one of the most common type of riding mowers but, unlike a zero-turn model, cannot turn on a dime. Instead, these models are great for larger lawns that are flat and don’t have many trees or bushes that need to be mowed around. If you’re looking for a mower that can be used with attachments, such as mulching kits or bags, these are the mowers to buy.

What do buyers say? 1,300+ Home Depot reviewers rated this 5 stars.
It may surprise some people, but our top pick is this battery-powered model from RYOBI. The zero-emissions model easily matches gas mowers in terms of power, cutting through thick grass with ease while demonstrating impressive maneuverability. Plus, it's fume-free and practically silent, generating only minimal noise. (Our tester put a similar model from RYOBI to work on her 10-acre farm and was blown away by the results.)
The RYOBI electric mower has a 38-inch deck, and its 48-volt batteries can run for two and a half hours per charge, allowing you to cut up to two and a half acres in a single session. The two-blade deck has 12 different cutting heights, and the mower offers convenient features like cruise control, LED headlights, and USB charging. There are no belts, spark plugs, or filters, making it easier to maintain than a traditional riding mower.
Our only complaints? The seat gets uncomfortable if you're mowing for long periods, and it doesn't have a mulch setting. Still, if you're in the market for a reliable ride-on mower and ready to switch to a battery-powered model, this is your best bet.

You’ll be able to power up steep hills with ease on the Troy-Bilt Bronco 42-Inch Gas Riding Lawn Mower. The 10 Best Lawn Mowers of 2022
Final Verdict
The RYOBI 48V Brushless 38 in. Electric Riding Lawn Mower is a top choice among riding lawn mowers thanks to its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, powerful performance, and ease of maintenance. If you prefer a gas mower, consider the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro LT 42 in. 19.5 HP Gas Riding Lawn Tractor, which boasts a hydrostatic transmission and can be used with a variety of multi-season accessories.
Power Source
One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to buy a gas- or electric-powered riding lawn mower. Gas mowers are generally more powerful, but they’re louder, less eco-friendly, and require more maintenance. Electric mowers, on the other hand, are typically less powerful with a shorter run time, but they’re quieter, easier to start, and better for the environment.
Deck Size
The deck size of a lawn mower dictates how wide a path it cuts—larger decks cut wider paths on each pass. A deck size of between 30 to 60 inches is recommended for most homeowners. Bigger decks are better for lawns with few obstacles and turns, while smaller decks will be helpful if you have to mow around trees or garden beds.
Grass Clipping
Don’t forget to consider how the lawn mower handles grass clippings. Some machines simply spit clippings back out onto your lawn, while others have options to bag or mulch the cut grass. The best option for you simply depends on how you prefer to handle your clippings.
This article was written by Camryn Rabideau, a freelance contributor for The Spruce. As someone who grew up on a 70-acre farm and owns a 5-acre parcel herself, she’s no stranger to lawn mowers, and she’s written extensively on them. She’s also personally tested the RYOBI 38 in. 75 Ah Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower and used other riding lawn mowers from RYOBI and Husqvarna.
While selecting lawn mowers for this list, she looked at factors such as their deck size, power source, special features, comfort, and warranty period. She also spoke with Caroline Skelton, Go-To-Market Manager for Riding Lawn Equipment at John Deere, for insights on choosing and maintaining a riding lawn mower.

Top 5 garden tractors with grass catcher 2021
Lawn care and lawn mowing equipment can be called the backbone of the entire landscape gardening market. There are exactly two reasons for this: the highest demand and the maximum variety of types - from mechanical lawn mowers and electric trimmers to large garden tractors. The latter, in turn, are also divided into several groups, which further complicates the choice of machine. In this regard, we are launching a small series of articles in which we will talk about the features of the equipment of each group, as well as traditionally suggest the top 5 models among the current range. The first in line are garden tractors with a grass collector.
Purpose and features
A lawn tractor is basically a large, powerful self-propelled lawn mower designed to work on large areas - approximately 20,000 m2. To do this, it is equipped with a seat and handlebar so that the operator does not have to walk the entire area, and a wide mowing deck with 2, and sometimes 3 knives, so that you can cover the entire area in a minimum number of passes.
Garden tractors differ not only in design, but also in the system for ejecting mowed grass, and the group we will discuss in more detail today is closest to the classic lawn mower. These are tractors with a grass collector - a large basket located in the rear, where mowed grass is sent through a special channel coming from the deck. Accordingly, after mowing, it is not necessary to remove it from the site. It is enough to drive to the place allotted for this purpose and empty the grass catcher using the lever.
And, of course, the tractor remains a tractor - a powerful and multifunctional machine. In this regard, almost all models have a rear hitch to equip, for example, a cart that will be useful in gardening, and some machines even have an engine power take-off system that allows you to install an active attachment - a snow blower or a brush.
And now, having dealt with the purpose and features, you can proceed to the rating of the best models of the season. And, as usual, we remind you that they are located randomly in the list and absolutely all of them are worthy of your attention when choosing.
Top 5 garden tractors with grass catcher
MTD Smart RE 125
The first in our ranking is a household model from the American brand MTD. This is not a novelty on the market, and this, perhaps, is one of the important advantages. The tractor has already been well run in, offered various attachments and even decently modified: since last year it has been built on the basis of a new engine model, also developed and produced by MTD - Thorx 382 EVO2 OHV. The transition to an engine with an overhead valve arrangement has reduced fuel consumption by about 25% and simplified operation in the cold season. By the way, for an easier start, an electric starter is installed here.
Otherwise, this is literally a prime example of what a garden tractor should be: a steel deck with 2 knives; a small turning radius of 46 cm for this type of equipment for mowing between flower beds; grip width 92 cm; a large 240L combo box, a 12-speed semi-automatic transmission (6+6) and even headlights to get the job done after dusk. Special mention also deserves the ability to mow with mulching (this requires an optional kit) and assembly. It is carried out not in China, as everyone is used to, but in the USA.
Perhaps the manufacturer can be reproached only for the fact that, along with the latest modifications, the rear hitch disappeared from the standard configuration. If necessary, it will have to be purchased separately.
Learn more details >>>
Cub Cadet LT2 NR92
Another American garden tractor in our ranking, which, by the way, is also assembled in Hungary. In terms of a number of characteristics and even appearance (apart from the signature yellow color), the machines are extremely similar: the same working width, the same grass catcher volume and turning radius, optional mulching and no hitch in the kit. Even at the heart of the solution from Cub Cadet is also an OHV engine, however, of its own design. However, this tractor still offers additional benefits.
In general, the manufacturer itself positions it as a semi-professional car. That is, it is well suited for the most complex domestic work or occasional, infrequent use for commercial purposes. To accommodate this, the engine offers slightly more power, and the manual transmission has been replaced by a more comfortable hydrostatic transmission, with smoother movement and improved maneuverability. The wheels are mounted on bearings.
Additional attention deserves the possibility of installing an active hitch (snow blower or brush), which, coupled with a large weight (almost 200 kg) and tenacious rubber, makes the tractor a truly all-weather helper.
Well, the manufacturer is so confident in the quality of his tractor that he offers an extended warranty - 3 years.

Husqvarna TC 138L
Lawn tractors are not only produced by American companies, although, undoubtedly, the culture of lawn care is most developed in the USA. There are similar cars in the Husqvarna catalog. And the situation here is much more interesting than it seems at first glance. The model of the Swedish brand we have chosen is assembled in the USA based on a Chinese engine. The engine, by the way, is very successful and, despite the note that it was made by order of Husqvarna, it is successfully used in tractors and other companies, such as MasterYard.
The Husqvarna TC 138L garden tractor also belongs to semi-professional equipment, and even has a significantly higher maximum power (17 hp versus about 12 for the above models), but it still has a smaller working area - up to 2500 m2. But “available” is a combined 220 l grass collector, headlights, optional mulching, wheel bearings, a rear hitch and a fitting for flushing the deck.
In addition, great emphasis is placed on maneuverability: a smooth hydrostatic transmission, coupled with the ability to mow in reverse and a 40-cm turning radius, allow you to comfortably travel not only in open spaces, but also in yards with flower beds and decorative elements. It is also the first model in our top list to have an hour meter with a service reminder and a grassbag full indicator with an audible signal.

Caiman Rapido 2WD
Due to the high performance and focus on large areas, garden tractors are mostly still paid attention by professionals. For their needs, that is, for regular, long working sessions, first of all, it is worth recommending the Caiman Rapido 2WD model - the only “professional” member of our top garden tractors in the full sense of the word.
It is already clear from the characteristics that this is a machine of a completely different class. First, it uses the signature Green Engine V-Twin 708CC 2-cylinder cast-iron sleeve engine that delivers up to 22 hp. power and good motor resource even with regular use. Secondly, the deck has a grip width increased to 102 cm (almost the maximum on the market) and an electromagnetic knife switching system (just flip a switch). Thirdly, there is a differential lock with a pedal, which increases patency and reduces the likelihood of spoiling the lawn by slipping.
In general, the machine is designed for large, free areas up to 8000 m2. This is evidenced by a huge 300-liter grass collector, and not the smallest turning radius - 61 cm. At the same time, there is a reverse mowing system, which should somewhat simplify the processing of the most difficult areas. By the way, the engine has a pressure lubrication system, which allows you to mow grass even on slopes. A rear hitch is also standard. The only thing missing is the possibility of installing an active hitch.
And the last couple of remarks: the Caiman Rapido 2WD garden tractor is assembled in the Czech Republic, and the official warranty for it is as much as 5 years.

Solo by Alko T 16-103.7 HD V2 Comfort 127444
Solo by Al-Ko is a separate series of semi- and professional equipment produced by a German brand, so the direction of this garden tractor can be guessed from the name. Structurally, this model is similar to the previous member of the top. A two-cylinder V-engine is also installed here, but with a slightly lower maximum power - “only” 16 hp. Moreover, the company did not reinvent the wheel, but simply used the experience of someone who really knows how to design and manufacture gasoline engines - the American brand Briggs & Stratton.
Despite the reduced power compared to the Caiman, the tractor is clearly designed for huge areas, as it offers a working width of 103 cm and is equipped with a 300-liter grass box. Knives and wheels are mounted on bearings, which prolongs their service life. The inclusion of knives is electromagnetic, the transmission is hydrostatic. But there is no differential lock and a power take-off system for active equipment. It is difficult to say whether this is a serious drawback for most buyers, but this affects the price extremely positively.
And the last thing: the assembly of this particular model is carried out in Austria and this is felt literally from the first moments of operation. She is so well crafted. And the manufacturer, despite the initially expected highest loads, offers a very good guarantee - up to 4 or even 5 years, depending on the desire of the consumer to undergo regular maintenance in the official SC.

Best Lawn Tractors Buyer's Guide
Transmission
Tractor's transmission is the power that is transferred from the engine to the wheels to move them forward or backward. The information is available in three forms. There are automatic, manual and hydrostatic.
- The manual transmission has a wide range of speeds that you can always choose from. Older models will need to constantly change gear or stop the tractor using the clutch.
- The automatic transmission will always allow you to change or control the speed with the gas pedal, just like in cars. This option is suitable for those who are interested in moving quickly and often slowing down to overcome obstacles.
- The hydrostatic transmission is almost the same as the automatic version. However, the main difference is that it uses fluid instead of belts to help transfer power from the engine to the wheels. The fluid based transmission system provides the smoothest ride possible and requires minimal maintenance.
maneuverability
The smaller the lawn tractor, the easier it will be to move structures, plants and corners. This means that there will be less manual work after the haircut. However, industrial size tractors with a wide cutting edge do not work in narrow and cramped spaces.
If your yard has a lot of trees and areas, it is better to use smaller decks. However, if you have a large yard with lots of outbuildings, you may want to consider opting for a larger lawn tractor.
durability
Lawn tractors will always wear out over time. Remember, they are never that cheap. You will need to purchase a lawn tractor that is strong and durable and will remain in top working condition for a long time. One way is to check the type of materials the lawn tractor and its components are made of.
comfort
Lawn tractors are as readable as standard cars. However, it will take some time before you can mow a large yard. Hence, comfort level will always be an important factor when you are in the market of leading lawn tractors.
Having bought a comfortable lawn tractor, you will be able to use it without problems for a long time. There are lawn tractors that allow you to make adjustments to the center as you see fit. Some of them with adjustable steering, increased legroom, cup holders, LED headlights and an easy access control panel that help the lawn tractor user feel comfortable when mowing.
