You've got your house setup like a cool Berlin art director you saw on Instagram. There are stacks of design books, tidy bookshelves, a lot of sharp lines. Most outdoor furniture is too homey for you. It fucks up your vision.

This option from Crate & Barrel is the only answer that isn't at an insane price point. Sharp lines, a minimal base, and that so hard to find all-black design. Chic!

What Should You Look For in a Quality Outdoor Sofa?

Durability and Quality Materials

One of the most important factors to consider when investing in any outdoor furniture is durability. Outdoor sofas have to endure everything Mother Nature throws their way, which can take a serious toll if the sofa isn’t designed with durability in mind. And durability starts with high-quality materials.

“You’ll want to find the right materials for your climate so you know they’ll stand up to the elements while looking good and functioning well over time."

“Durability and longevity are key components of great outdoor furniture,” says Aaron Whitney. “You’ll want to find the right materials for your climate so you know they’ll stand up to the elements while looking good and functioning well over time.  It’s also important to look for high-grade materials, like FSC-certified wood that is responsibly harvested.  Lastly, don’t overlook the small details—like stainless steel or marine-grade hardware—you want to make sure your furniture is built to last, all the way down to the smallest component.”

In addition to materials that are high-quality and durable, Maggie Gala recommends that you, “Look for materials that are easy to care for and clean when needed.” Many of the outdoor patio sofas on this list have machine-washable upholstery, so consider investing in one like that if you’re worried about stains, dirt, and debris.

Comfort

Of course, you also want your outdoor couch to be comfortable. Even the most attractive outdoor sofas aren’t likely to get any use if they’re not comfortable to spend time on. And while comfort is subjective, it often starts with the seat cushions, including their thickness and fill, as well as their depth.

“You want to ensure the depth of the seat cushion works for you and is comfortable,” says Jade Joyner. Some people find deep-seat designs most comfortable, which create a lounge-like feel, while others might prefer a more shallow depth that makes it easier to sit up straight. And the same goes for thickness and fill; some people prefer a super thick and soft cushion they can sink into, while others might like a firmer, more supportive seat. The key is to find what works best for you and other members of your household. For a little extra comfort you could also add some throw pillows to your sofa.

Flexibility

Many households expand and shrink over time as new family members are born or move away for work or college. Ideally, your outdoor furniture should be able to adapt to these changes. Maggie Gala recommends investing in modular outdoor furniture for this reason: “Modular furniture lets you arrange and rearrange for any occasion without restrictions.”

Many brands, like Neighbor, invest a lot of effort into creating modular furniture that can transform from an outdoor sofa to an outdoor sectional or outdoor loveseat, depending on your needs of the moment. “At Neighbor, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about flexibility because you may want a sofa now and then decide you want a larger sectional when you move to a new house later,” says Aaron Whitney.

What Materials Work Best for Outdoor Sofas?

The materials that an outdoor sofa is made from affect everything from the sofa’s durability to its comfort, so make sure you consider the upholstery and frame materials of all prospective outdoor sofas.

Frame Materials

From Acacia wood and teak wood to wicker rattan and aluminum frames, there are many different frame materials to choose from. The right one for you depends on your household needs and aesthetic, as well as the weather in your region. “If low maintenance and durability are top of mind,” says Terry Lin, “we recommend recycled synthetic materials like aluminum and all-weather wicker rather than traditional rattan, which can dry and crack over time.”

“We recommend recycled synthetic materials like aluminum and all-weather wicker rather than traditional rattan, which can dry and crack over time.”

One of the advantages of aluminum frames, especially powder-coated aluminum is that they’re relatively lightweight and naturally rust-resistant, so they tend to fair well in rainy climates. “Aluminum, chemically, does not rust,” says Maggie Gala.”With an added powder coating, aluminum outdoor furniture will last for years.”

Solid wood is another high-quality frame material to consider. According to Aaron Whitney, “If you’re in the market for wood, it’s hard to beat teak because its high density, tight grain, and natural oils make it resistant to rot and insects. It’s also highly resistant to shrinkage, making it great for places exposed to moisture.”

Wicker rattan is another popular frame material, but it doesn’t stand up to the outdoor elements as well as its wood and aluminum counterparts since it can become dry and brittle, especially with lots of moisture. However, most outdoor wicker furniture now uses polyethylene resin instead of genuine rattan, which offers the look and feel of authentic rattan but more outdoor durability.

Cushion Materials

In addition to frame materials, you should consider the back and seat cushion materials since these will impact the outdoor sofa’s comfort and durability. Maggie Gala recommends looking for high-density foam cushions: “High-density cushions become more comfortable with each use, and the durable material will outlast standard foam cushions.”

It’s also helpful to consider how well the foam can offload moisture and retain its shape. “We generally look for reticulated (“quick dry”) foam because it allows moisture to pass through,” says Aaron Whitney. “You may see some conventional polyurethane foam used outdoors as well, just make sure that there is a waterproof barrier to protect the foam.”

In addition to the cushion fill, it’s important to invest in high-quality upholstery that can resist stains, fading, and mildew. Sunbrella fabric is a popular outdoor furniture material for that reason. “We work exclusively with Sunbrella fabric and have found that their solution-dyed acrylic textiles are some of the best on the market,” says Aaron. “A solution-dyed material has a consistent color all the way through the core of the yarn, so it won’t fade over time. Sunbrella is also stain-resistant, water-resistant, and machine washable so it’ll hold up to pets, toddlers, and inclement weather.”

Publication date:   03/24/2022 Category:  Good to know about furniture

Do you want to replace the bed in the bedroom with a sofa? Then it will be useful for you to know how to choose the right one. We figure out how to find the best sofa for daily sleep in the bedroom , what to consider when choosing and which models to look for.

A sleeping sofa instead of a bed is not only space saving, but also a stylish nuance in the interior

Is it possible to replace a full bed with a sofa?

When the size and layout of the bedroom allow, beds should be preferred. Why:

But that doesn't mean that daily sleep sofa is not suitable. If there is not enough space in the room, the sofa may well be a more adequate and correct solution. With the right choice, it will perfectly cope with the functions of a good bed.

For those who still prefer a bed, our store has a large selection of mattresses and beds.

What to consider when choosing a sofa for everyday sleep?

First, let's see how a regular sofa for a kitchen or living room differs from a sofa that you can sleep on. What qualities should a good sleeper sofa have?

Previous Next

On our site there are sofas with a lot of interesting solutions for arranging a comfortable bedroom, be sure to check out the options with mini-racks, bars, shelves and niches, roll-out drawers and spacious boxes under the seats of the sofas.

Bed in the unfolded state single sofa must be at least 1.2 m wide and 2 m long. For double options, the minimum width is 1.6 m. It is also worth paying attention to the maximum load. If two people sleep on the sofa, the maximum weight load should be 120–200 kg, no less.

Design is also important, but it is not the primary characteristic. The priority is comfort and reliability.

What are the forms and mechanisms of sofas, how to choose?

Characteristics of sofas that you need to decide on when choosing a bed:

It is desirable to move according to this list - it has already been prioritized.

Shape

The shape of the sofas are divided into five types - straight, corner, island, modular and U-shaped. For daily use in the bedroom, the first two options are better suited - straight or corner. In a spacious room, you can put a U-shaped sofa.

Straight sleeper sofa is the most popular option. It is compact, easy to use, can be installed close to any wall and fits easily into most modern apartment layouts. This model has no bends, unfolds forward, can be one-and two-sleeping. Great solution for children's room and bedroom.

The most convenient format is a straight sofa for the bedroom (pictured is the Nadine sofa)

Corner sofa takes up more space, but looks more interesting. It is often used in spacious rooms to separate a recreation area, for example, from a dining or play area. Or divide a studio apartment into functional areas (for example, a bedroom, a cinema, a kitchen, etc.). Due to its shape, the corner sofa can be installed against the wall (in the corner). But it is often placed in an island way. This gives the room a more organized look. True, in a small bedroom this will not work.

Stylish Corner Sofa for Sleeping

Modular sofa or "model system" sofa can take up a lot of space and often has an impressive bed size. The main feature is that you can arrange upholstered furniture from elements (modules) in accordance not only with the size of your room, but also with its geometry.

Island sofa. In fact, this is not even a separate type of sofa, but its special placement, in which in the center of the room there is a separate unique piece of furniture - a sofa, which can be straight, and angular, and modular. A mandatory requirement - such a sofa should be beautiful from all sides, plus it has another important task - zoning the room.

Unfolding or transformation mechanisms

Turning a sofa into a bed is a change in the shape of the sofa by moving its individual parts into the horizontal plane of the bed using special mechanisms. Sofas have several basic folding mechanisms:

There are also folding beds - two-fold (American, Belgian) and three-fold (French). They are elegant and compact when folded, but not suitable for daily sleep. The mattress in the transformation mechanisms of such sofas is most often thin and does not exceed 12 cm, it is not very comfortable to sleep on it every day.

Pantographs, dolphins and eurobooks are considered the best for daily rest. "Dolphins" and "cougars" are more often used in corner models. For linear ones, tick-tock, click-clack and roll-out options are also preferred.

Filling elements that are responsible for stiffness

According to the type of filler sofas are divided into spring and springless. The former may have a dependent and independent spring block. The most popular version of the dependent spring block is the Bonnel system. There are many materials for the springless design of sofas, we will try to reveal the main features, briefly, and we will describe the fillers in more detail in a separate article.

Springless sleeping sofas

Springless sleeping sofas are filled with polyurethane foam (PPU, foam rubber) or orthofoam in combination with non-woven materials (periotek, holofiber, durafil, etc.). PPU is in fact the most used and popular filler for inexpensive springless sofas.

Loved for its elasticity, resilience and affordable price. Polyurethane foam is often supplemented with sofas with an orthopedic base and sofas that use a spring snake or elastic rubber-fabric belts. And the difference in stiffness of the soft elements of sofas is achieved by using combinations of furniture foam brands of different stiffness and density.

The denser the PU foam layer cake, the stronger and more durable the furniture. The density of the base up to 30 kg / cubic meter will provide a comfortable sleep (quickly shrinks and takes the shape of the human body), but over time, the material will no longer return to its original shape and dents will appear on the surface.

Sometimes it takes getting used to new upholstered furniture with foam filling with a density higher than 30 kg/m3, at first it seems hard.

A modern alternative to classic polyurethane foam - orthopedic foam or orthofoam. This is the same PPU with improved qualities. It does not absorb moisture, does not accumulate dust and is well ventilated. Sofas filled with orthopene are hypoallergenic.

Benefits of springless sofas

Cons of springless sofas

Who is it for?

Who is not suitable?

Examples

Sofas with a dependent spring unit

A sofa with a dependent spring unit is more budget furniture. In it, all the springs of the construct are interconnected: one spring moves, the rest move with it. The rigidity of furniture depends on the density and diameter of the springs. The smaller the diameter, the harder the sofa.

The same pattern applies to density. The denser the springs are, the stiffer the bed. Sofas with the popular bonnel system are stiffer than furniture with an independent spring unit.

Advantages of sofas with dependent spring block

Cons of sofas with a dependent spring block

Examples

Sofas with independent spring unit

Self-contained (independent) spring units are not new, but still cutting edge technology. It is preferable in all cases, except those when the price of furniture is a priority.

Yes, sleeping sofa models with independent spring systems are more expensive, but they also last longer and win in terms of healthy sleep. Often, such systems are used in conjunction with a spring snake, elastic furniture tape and highly elastic foam.

Quality sleeping sofas should not only be hard, but also soft. And for this they use (mix) different fillers:

Down-feather and padding polyester are considered optimal (and the most common, including in budget models). They are inexpensive, provide sufficient comfort during sleep and keep their shape well. But their service life under constant loads is not too long.

Over time, the material gets tangled and “used” or “overlaid” places appear in the sofa.

An alternative is products with inserts made of highly elastic PU foam, as in the Mega sofa from the Trevi factory collection. Combined with synthetic down, they offer exceptional comfort and long-lasting shape retention. The same goes for latex fillers.

They are hygienic, safe, have excellent shape retention and are highly resistant to compression.

Design

Having decided on the technical characteristics, you can proceed to the design of furniture. You need to understand that the sofa for sleeping replaces the bed - the most voluminous, and therefore the central piece of furniture. Accordingly, his style will largely set the style of the room.

Which style is best for a bedroom with a sofa? The answer depends only on the taste and character of the owners. We'll just list the top 5 interior fashion trends for 2022 for your inspiration:0002

  • Scandinavian style is functionality, pastel shades of used upholstery, no unnecessary decor items

  • English style - strict, but effective, always calm, leaves room for a choice of colorful upholstery shades (on which small dirt is invisible)

  • minimalism - a hit of recent years in apartment interiors
  • country or retro (dark upholstery, simple design, minimal decor - all this fits perfectly into the system of requirements for a sleeper sofa)

  • Functionality

Laundry drawers are the most popular extra feature in sofas, especially if you are buying furniture for the bedroom. Although they (boxes) are not always needed. It makes sense to think about whether to refuse a model with elegant legs just because it does not have a built-in linen box.

Bedding can also be folded into a chest of drawers. If it is important (so that there is a laundry box), do not forget to look at its dimensions.

Along with the standard place for linen in branded Belarusian sofas for bedrooms, many other options can be provided:

Why pay attention to sofa upholstery and frame?

When choosing a comfortable sofa for everyday sleep, you need to pay attention not only to the way it is transformed into a bed and filling, but also to the materials of the frame, as well as upholstery. Because the durability of upholstered furniture depends on them. Which sofas last the longest?

Taking into account the constant high loads on sofas for daily sleep, it is better to choose them with a wooden frame. Well, if it is made of solid beech, walnut, oak, birch. In more budget furniture, chipboard and plywood are found, which will last less than an array, but with good quality they can be quite reliable and durable.

Sofas are often made on a metal frame. It is desirable that it be welded, and not prefabricated with rivets and hinges. Fasteners loosen over time, begin to creak, break.

What should be the upholstery for a sofa that you can sleep on every day?

The Belarusian furniture industry uses a whole arsenal of different materials for sofa upholstery. All of them can be divided into three main groups:

Natural upholstery is leather, velor, velvet, tapestry, matting and others. Their advantages include absolute environmental friendliness, durability, beauty and presentability. Leather for a sofa that you want to sleep on every day will be very effective, but not the most practical solution due to its smoothness.

However, there are no strict prohibitions. Love leather? Give preference to a sofa with such upholstery - bed linen manufacturers have long figured out how to make it so that it does not slip off (the same sheets with elastic bands).

If the budget is tight, you can buy a sleeper sofa upholstered in natural velor or suede. Velor - velvety, pleasant to the touch. Suede is rough and durable (provided that its quality is not in doubt).

Artificial and mixed materials are eco-leather, artificial suede or velor, flock, chenille ribs. Blended fabrics should be understood as combinations of natural materials (cotton, linen) and synthetics (polyester or nylon). The most popular options in this group are artificial leather (arpatek) and flock.

Common types of synthetic upholstery are microfiber and courtisan. Both options are exceptionally comfortable and great for permanent furniture use.

Microfibre soft, silky, does not collect dust, easy to clean. Curtisan has anti-spill properties (Teflon coating), looks great, belongs to the category of Pet Friendly fabrics - it does not leave puffs and hooks.

Important details when choosing a sleeper sofa

Knowing the basic characteristics of the furniture, you can easily decide which sleeper sofa is best for a particular bedroom. It remains to go through the little things that determine the success of the purchase.

First, don't skimp on quality. It is often determined by the brand, especially when it comes to Belarusian furniture. Secondly, do not forget about measurements. You can remove them yourself to compare with the characteristics of the selected model to make a final decision.

Thirdly, be sure to check the patency of the room - it will be a shame if the purchased sofa does not fit into the opening of the room

Pay attention to the legs of the furniture. To save expensive parquet, it is better to choose “books” and “dolphins” instead of roll-out models. If there are no carpets in the room, it makes sense to take a sofa for sleeping with legs on wheels.

One last thing: height matters. Especially if an older person is sleeping in the room. He needs a sofa of sufficient height. Because getting up from a low seat is to give an extra load on the joints (if the furniture is also soft, it is completely uncomfortable). The surest way to determine the height (and in general with the choice of a sofa) is to personally check it.
