Insole can't be removed for airing/drying
We think the best wellies for men right now are the Barbour Bede Wellington boots. The base model in the Barbour range, these boots are perfectly functional but come with a few hidden benefits. The vulcanised rubber upper is solid enough to be easy to get on and off, but still flexible enough to be comfortable in wear, and includes an adjuster strap. A thick insole keeps your toes warm even in extended periods standing around. This is attached to the rest of the boot, which means it stays securely in place when pulling the boots on and off, but you can't dry or air it separately. An important design tweak is the addition is a ‘kick spur feature’; a small right-angled projection on the heel that provides a lever to help you get your boots on and off. They're not the cheapest... but they're not the most expensive, either. If you're wanting a pair of boots that'll keep you comfy and dry for years to come, these Barbours are our top pick. Expensive choice
Designed by Aigle as an anti-fatigue hunting boot, the Parcours 2 is made to be worn all day and it's the ideal footwear for a long, muddy winter hike. Handmade in France, the Parcours 2 features a tri-density rubber sole with shock absorption through a heel cushion and foam insole, while its Gomma Plus natural rubber upper is lined with fast-drying polyamide.
It's a quality boot that delivers cushioning, stability and abrasion resistance, and it's built to last, but this means that it's also the most expensive in this round-up. That said, it's sure to outlast many of the cheaper boots listed here (especially if you follow Aigle's care instructions), so if you're willing to pay up it'll almost certainly save you money in the long term.

Lacks the ankle support of hiking boots
Another excellent welly for walkers on a tighter budget, is the Decathlon r900. These boots boast a reinforced instep shock-absorbing insole unit that's specifically designed for walking, as well a 5mm tread for grip. While Decathlon says that they'll keep you comfy for strolls of up to 20km, be aware that no welly will offer the same level of ankle support you would in proper hiking boots. The r900s are made from a new rubber formula that's designed to be more durable, and boast a high cut that makes them ideal for dense undergrowth and very boggy ground. Although these aren't the cheapest wellies around, they're nice and robust, and don't involve any compromises in the comfort stakes.

If you're looking for robust wellies for tough tasks, check out the Muck Boot Mudder. These boots shine when it comes to outright protection, with sturdy build and outsoles designed to repel oil and gas as well as shedding excess mud. Thoughtful additions such as the heel wedge and reflective tab help these stand out further, although in our Muck Boot Mudder review we found they're not the most flexible boots so if you're wanting something for long comfortable strolls, perhaps look elsewhere in the list. There's a wide fit all round, so a good choice if you've got chunky calves or want to be able to tuck in bulky trousers comfortably.

Neoprene's tricky to get used to
If you're looking for a wellington boot that is heaped with function and style, these Le Chameau beauties could be the best wellies for you. Although seemingly expensive, the Vierzonord, available for men and women, are built to last, so expect a robust and durable build straight out of the box. If you work outdoors, they will see you through many years of slogging away in mud and heavy rain, thanks to their durable natural rubber upper and hard-wearing rubber sole. But you don't have to work outdoors to enjoy them – they're also perfect for dog walking and muddy country strolls. The Vierzonord wellies have an adjustable snap-fastening buckle on the side so that you can wear them comfortably over jeans, trousers and leggings. Those with wider calves may appreciate the adjustable fit.
The fast-drying 3mm neoprene keeps your feet dry and makes these wellies comfort rated to temperatures as low as -15°C. The neoprene does take a little getting used to at first, especially when it comes to tugging off the wellies, but we found that rolling the boots down a little helped us to get them off easier. They also wipe clean in a jiffy, with mud and dirt washing straight off. If you're not so fussed on the neoprene option, you could opt for the Le Chameau Vierzon wellington boots, which are jersey-lined and have a lower RRP too.

Basic design and quality
If you're looking for a pair of wellies you can keep in your car, for wearing on dog walks and for getting out and about in the mud, these Dunlops are the best wellies for you. While they don't match the more expensive wellies in terms of material (the outer material is synthetic, not rubber), they're still fully waterproof and come with a 3cm heel for cushioning on unstable ground. Plus, with wellies for wider calves being quite tricky to come by without a hike in price, these boots really are budget-friendly. If you require a cheap and cheerful pair of wellington boots because you don't want fancy forking out on a pair of Hunters, we heartily recommend these Dunlops.

Not as much leg protection as full-length welly
If you don't need full-leg protection, these ankle-length boots from The Original Muck Boot Company come highly recommended. We've tested out the women's version and were hugely impressed. The thing that stands out most is the comfort – the insole provides ample cushioning for hours of wear, while the lace-up top section adds adjustable support around the ankles. This lace up section makes them easier to get on and off than your average wellington boot, too. The rubber lower section is fully waterproof – you can submerge these in puddles without worry of damp feet – while the leather upper provides natural water-resistance when walking through long wet grass, for instance. For full calf protection you'll need to invest in a taller boot, but for more casual wear and especially for those who need a bit more stability and support, the Duck Lace-up short boots are a top buy.

For a classic welly that will serve you well when mucking about in deep mud most days, we recommend our number one choice's taller counterpart: the Original Tall Wellington Boot from Hunter. They're a great all-round welly, but most importantly the full calf coverage will you keep your feet, ankle and calves dry no matter how much it rains, or how deep a puddle of mud you stand in. You'll have the rugged durability that comes with the Hunter name and promises to keep your feet warm and dry in deep mud or rainfall.

Zipper isn't great
The Muck Boot Apex is a welly boot for people who don't like wellies. More akin to a traditional hiking boot, the Apex melds high-performance welly-esque rubber and 5mm neoprene with a mid-ankle boot design, resulting in a close-fitting, highly flexible waterproof boot. There's plenty of breathability built in to combat the inevitable internal clagginess, as well as a antimicrobial footbed insert to beat the pong.
The outsole is designed for use on loose and soft ground, making these perfect for high-performance activities in soggy conditions, as well as ingenious 'stealth' wellies for those times when the dress code isn't obvious. That front lock-down waterproof zipper and screen collar help to keep the boot securely on the foot, as well as prevent debris from sneaking in and ruining your day. Overall, these are the perfect welly for active folk that want to go anywhere, do anything – without worrying about their feet getting damp.

Can be hard to take off
Call us fickle, but we're especially keen on these boots' bright orange (Blaze Orange, to give it its official name) liner, which is revealed when the tops of the boots are rolled down. It's designed to ensure high visibility for those working in areas such as forests, but in a world dominated by olive-green wellies, we're all for a splash of colour. However, don't make the mistake of thinking these boots prioritise style over substance – they're packed with features which make life that little bit easier, but which so many other boots lack. Examples include the generously-sized, reflective pull tab for easy removal, quadruple rubber heel reinforcement and a steel shank for structural support.
11. Stormwells Fur-Lined Welly Boots

Not the highest quality option
Stormwells Fur-Lined Welly Boots are the best Wellingtons for men looking to stay warm and dry in snowy, icy conditions. While they do look a bit like waders, which isn't our favourite look, the tie top fastening will keep out snow and rain, while the faux fur lining keeps your toes warm and toasty in colder conditions. The Hi-Grip sole helps keep you upright and moving in icy conditions, making these the perfect choice for extreme weather wellies. These are a bargain option, which means they probably won't last as well as other pricier boots on our list, but if warmth is your priority, they're a great pick.

Striking colour scheme
If you are a construction worker, or do other manual labour on a regular basis, finding wellies that are ideal for work can be pretty tricky. These boots from Buckler are the best wellies for men – or women – who work outside or in garages, where something tougher than standard wellies is required. These boots come with steel toe caps and are heat, oil and slip resistant, which means they can be worn in a variety of working environments. The colour may not be your top choice for weekend wear, but they certainly stand out. What's more, they come with detachable insoles for easy cleaning. If your biggest concern when choosing wellies is protecting your feet from harm, these are the ideal choice for you.

How we test the best wellies
To put together this ranking, wherever possible we call the wellies in and spend time testing them out to put together a full review. We'll consider how much protection they offer, whether they keep your feet cosy or offer enough breathability for warmer weather, how comfy they are to wear and if they're suitable for long days on your feet. We'll look at how much grip they offer, and if they're supportive around the feet and ankles. Finally, we'll consider the quality of materials and how they've been put together, and how much we like the design. Because some of these factors can be personal, we also look at other reviews to make sure there's nothing we've missed.
In the cases where we haven't been able to get hold of a product, but feel it's worthy of inclusion, we research what other customers and reviewers have said, and combine that with what we know about the market to put together an informed blurb for you to base your decision off. Find out more about how we test at T3.

Why rough up your prized footwear when a wellington boot isn't just more functional, but can form the base from which many a stylish winter walk can be trodden. Here we bring you GQ’s pick of Balmoral-ready Wellington boots for men from Dunlop to Hunter
Whether it be for plodding through squelchy fields, marching up gritty forest tracks or just dog walking through grimy pavement puddles, we could all use a bit more protection than our trainers afford. That means a pair of good old British wellies.
In essence, Wellington boots are the ultimate rain boot – a wet weather shoe that extends above the ankle, constructed of a moulded shell that slips on without laces and comes with grippy outsoles to stay slip-resistant on treacherous paths (or in the fairer season, in festival fields). Essentially, you wear a pair of wellies when you want to forget about the poor weather and get to enjoying it. There are just a few things to consider before you buy a new pair.
What kind of socks should I wear underneath my wellington boots?
Given the roominess inside a Wellington boot, you’ll want to pair with thick socks or at least double up to fill out the void around your foot. Men’s wellies are usually unlined, so the thin kind of socks you wear with formal shoes are unlikely to be very comfortable and the abrasion from the inner will form holes in no time. Your best bet is a welly sock, which acts as a more comfortable liner to tall wellington boots, coming right up the length of the shin and folding over the top, keeping feet dry and warm.
How should I look after my wellington boots?
Most often whipped out when you’re trudging through a muddy field or on a Great British snow day, hard-wearing wellies are an item of footwear that’ll likely need to be cleaned after every outing. Your best friend for welly care is plain old water and a brush, before letting them air-dry. Avoid any aggressive detergents, as they could cause decolouration and deterioration to the rubber. Crumpled newspaper will help draw out any moisture that’s reached the lining of your boot.
What are the best wellington boots for men?
If you’re on the hunt for the perfect pair, there are plenty of excellent Wellington boots to choose from. While most styles come in unisex sizing, men ought to take calf size into account as they generally possess wider calves than women. Our edit covers everything from popular brands like Hunter to luxurious takes by Le Chameau and even luxury fashion's interpretation of the wellington boot care of Bottega Veneta (though quite frankly, you'd have a screw loose if you were considering for a rainy Cotswolds outing). Check out all our picks below:

Hunter (Original Short)
Founded in 1856, Hunter boots are in good stead to claim “heritage welly” status. This particular model has a few old-school features, including visible outer stitching around the midsole and a throwback toggle strap up top. But its slightly shorter than usual length and matte finish brings a modern aesthetic into the mix, for a great all-rounder. £135. hunterboots.com

Dunlop
A pair of Wellington boots with Western trend appeal, these Dunlop wellies border on weatherproof cowboy boots with their rich brown hue and dual pull tabs. Quite the vibe, and that's before we've hot-glued on our own silver spurs. £89.99. At decathlon.co.uk

Grenson
Grenson's more sartorially-minded footwear has graced many a GQ cover in its time (see Nicholas Braun and Michaela Coel), but that's not to say its shoes lack function. Not quite a Wellington boot, the weather-resistant rubberised leather of this Chelsea style will more than hold their own when there's snowfall (and subsequent sludge) in the city. £430. matchesfashion.com
- Native Share
Barbour
No country walk in old Blighty is complete without a classique Barbour wax jacket, and the same rings true of the brand's heritage imbued wellies, too. A tall wellington boot punctuated by brass side adjusters and rubberised Barbour logos, they guarantee suave countrified vibes as you trespass local fields. £99.95. barbour.com

Diemme
Another not-quite-a-Wellington-but-will-do-the-trick option for our edit, these rubberised Diemme boots balance durability and style with elan. Handmade at the label's Calzaturificio Diemme factory in Onè di Fonte, Italy, the lugged rubber sole is well-equipped for wet, muddy walks while the rigid suede adds a sense of on-brand luxe craftsmanship. £255. matchesfashion.com

Hunter (Chelsea)
The traditional Wellington silhouette is not for everyone – even Hunter knows that. It's why the brand has its own range of rubberised Chelsea boot alternatives. Our favourite of its several takes on the silhouette is its refined moc toe Chelsea, which will easily pass for the more classic leather or suede version if you squint a little, and is plenty more practical on a wet day. £110. hunterboots.com

Le Chameau
For as luxurious a take as you’ll find in the more heritage department of men’s wellies, Le Chameau takes this countrified footwear and gives it some high-end appeal. Its Vierzonord boot is the first to incorporate an adjustable gusset to fine-tune the fit to your liking, while a neoprene lining keeps things insulated on the coldest winter stroll. £190. lechameau.com

Crocs
A brand beloved by chefs and well, anyone who prioritises comfort above all else, Crocs' venture into that most weatherproof of footwear is simple and effective. Seamless in design for total waterproofing, the cushioning and lightness of this all-black pair makes them some oof the comfiest we've tried. £39.99. At amazon.co.uk

Hunter (Play)
Sitting at the slightly more playful end of Hunter's design spectrum, these short Wellington boots by Hunter come in a festival-friendly blue colourway with chic tricolour detailing to the logo patch and pull tabs. Add them to cart, then revive the Glasto Whatsapp group for 2022. £75. At asos. com

Muck Boot Company
This boot doesn’t muck about. (Facepalm.) This is a simple, good-looking boot and it isn’t trying to be anything else. The neoprene will help with comfort, preventing that flopping noise you can get with rubber wellies; plus, crouching down will be much easier. Underfoot, it has an aggressive tread and strengthening around the toe and ankle for support. £72. At amazon.co.uk

Aigle
These French Aigle boots are sculpted from hardwearing natural rubber and have a wonderful colour play between green, bronze and black. They’re ergonomic too, with a sturdy adjustable strap around the top with a stylish logo emblazoned on the tag. They come with no-nonsense triple-density chunky rubber grip underfoot, plus insulating neoprene interior lining and shock-absorbing cushioning. £180. At countryattire. com

Bottega Veneta
There's no question that these Bottega boots are more at home on a Paris runway than a Somerset staycation. Few brands could rise to the challenge of making the wellie fashion with a capital “F”, but these designer puddle boots have us feeling all kinds of feels. Go on… swap the wax jacket for the leather trench. £560. At matchesfashion.com

Stutterheim
OK, so it’s sort of a Chelsea boot. But it is also a “rainwalker”, so, you know, let’s not get bogged down in semantics. These are perfect for the city, because there isn’t much more demoralising or humiliating than stepping on a loose paving stone and plunging into the brown, murky, ice-cold pool beneath. Hailing from Stutterheim they are also supremely stylish and constructed from 100 per cent natural rubber. £135. stutterheim. com

Perhaps this is the most popular brand among fashionistas who do not want to “study the market” in detail: Hunter is practical, with an interesting design and well advertised. And the brand has a history: in 1856, at the Scottish factory The Castle Silk Mills, where the American businessman Henry Lee Norris began the production of rubber shoes under the sign of The North British Rubber. The company prospered and even during the First and Second World Wars, it was Hunter who provided the British army with waterproof shoes.
Today Hunter is also a supplier of rubber shoes to the British Royal Family. You can trust these boots! They are equipped with an orthopedic last and a multilayer foam insole, the winter version is available with a fur lining. Among the fans of the brand are Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Olsen, Nicole Richie. Among the partners are eminent designers. Jimmy Choo, for example, teamed up with Hunter to release python-embossed rubber boots!
G&G (Italy).
These boots are made in Italy (in Parma) from PVC and rubber. The inner surface is made of textile or - in winter models - Thinsulate insulation. Rubber boots have a knitted (woven) base, and the design boasts a variety of colors. Most models are available in three shaft heights: ankle-length, mid-calf and knee-length.
Viking (Norway)
In Norway, there is no shortage of rain, and therefore they know a lot about waterproof shoes. Viking brand founded back in 1920, today is a leader in the production of footwear in the Scandinavian countries.
Boots, sandals, rubber boots, sneakers, trekking shoes for extreme sports, shoes for children... Technologies and materials are the world famous Gore-Tex (including the latest XCR development), Vibram, natural rubber and a unique BOA lacing system that allows in a matter of seconds, lace up boots with a simple rotation of a special disk.
Nokian (Finland).
Nokian rubber shoes are endless design delights. The company was founded by several Finnish businessmen: at first it was the Finnish Rubber Factory, then the factory moved to the town of Nokia, whose name later became the name of the now well-known mobile brand all over the world, and Hai rubber boots became really popular there. Yachtsmen especially liked them.
Before World War II, Nokian began making belts, hoses, tires and other rubber products. In addition to ordinary household boots, special work and military boots appeared. The most famous model in the 70s was men's boots with a high top - "Kontio", the owners of such boots were considered real fashionistas. Today, the brand continues to experiment with style.
EverCreatures (England).
Boots EverCreatures are made from environmentally friendly EVA material. It is lightweight, does not crack in the cold, has increased heat resistance and has antibacterial properties. These boots are loved for interesting prints and a strap that adjusts the width of the shaft. The brand has existed only since 2004, but in Britain its products are sold out instantly.
Les Tres Jolis (Italy)
Tres Joli boots have long been considered in Europe as real collector's models with the highest level of quality. Designers love to combine rubber for total moisture protection with leather to allow your foot to breathe and feel comfortable.
Giesswein (Austria)
Go to the Austrians for an insulated version of rubber boots. In addition, they love to experiment with furs. For example, boots with raccoon fur on the top.
AIGLE (France)
The history of the brand began with the development of rubber boots for workers in the fields, but in connection with modern fashion, the brand has really turned around. The CHANTEBELLE line is especially beautiful. In addition - girls will surely like it - they have many models with a narrow shaft. The manufacturer's website has a dimensional grid and a grid for the calf circumference of boots.
Tretorn (Sweden)
The company has vast sports experience behind it - since the end of the 19th century it has been producing shoes for hunting, fishing, and tennis. (In 1967, the legendary Tretorn Nylite Canvas was introduced as the top luxury tennis shoe.) The brand produces boots high, low, with fur - in general, for every taste.
Well, if you are only interested in luxury labels, then such brands as Burberry, Ed Hardy, Valentino, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana also do not “pass by” the rubber trend and offer a lot of models. Chloe has sandals with a high rubber platform, while Fendi offers very elegant rubber boots with heels and laces. Dry autumn!
