Good lighting design is particularly important in the kitchen, which is often a family's hub for cooking, eating, homework, and more. "Kitchens are the most critical space in home for lighting because a kitchen is so multi-functional, with both task and ambient lighting needs," says Bryan Johnson, CEO of Shades of Light. "Your space needs to be well lit, and you need task lighting to support the preparation of food, often in multiple spots through the room. Accordingly, you need your kitchen lights to look good and throw off a lot of light."
We researched dozens of kitchen lights from top home and decor brands, evaluating ease of installation and use, brightness, durability, and functionality. Our best overall pick, the Pottery Barn Glass Globe Cord Pendant, is elegant, adjustable, and compatible with flat and sloped ceilings.
Here are the best kitchen lights.

Pottery Barn's Glass Globe Cord Pendant is our favorite kitchen light since its elegant silhouette and customizable design allow it to meld well with all types of interiors.
You can opt to buy this fixture with a larger 12.5-inch shade or a smaller 8.5-inch shade to match your space. Both sizes have a 6-foot-long cord, though the maximum hanging length for the 12.5-inch option is 91 inches, while the maximum hanging length for the 8.5-inch option is 86.75 inches. To further personalize the look, you can choose between three different hardware finishes: bronze, brass, and nickel.
While this globe pendant is an expensive option, it's still less costly than most custom light fixtures. It's dry UL-listed, so you want to make sure you hang it in an area free of dampness. Otherwise, maintenance is simple with the help of a dry, non-abrasive cloth. For added versatility, it's also compatible with a dimmer switch and is mountable on a slanted or sloped ceiling.

Even if you’re shopping on a budget, basic kitchen lights aren’t your only option. With its striking silhouette and textured shade, the Westinghouse Adjustable Mini Pendant is sure to make a statement in any space. And since the light is available at a reasonable price point, you can stock up on several without giving it a second thought.
Keep in mind that pendant lights work best over islands or in kitchens with high ceilings, so they may not be the best fit for every household. "If your kitchen doesn’t have an island or has a lower ceiling, opt instead for a flush or semi-flush mount fixture," says Johnson. "Ideally, select one with multiple heads to help get light where you need it."
The fixture boasts a diameter of 7 inches, so it shouldn’t demand too much space in your kitchen. But despite its small size, it promises to put off plenty of light. (Its shade is crafted from clear glass, after all.) When fully extended, the fixture can reach lengths up to 5 feet. But since it’s height-adjustable, you can easily shorten it to perfectly suit your space. And since color plays a key role in any kitchen design scheme, the fixture is available in two versatile neutrals: oil-rubbed bronze and brushed nickel.

If you’re looking for a flush mount light with a little flair, Joss & Main has you covered. The brand’s Carreno 1-Light Flush Mount offers the low-profile silhouette you’d expect from a flush mount light. But it’s still striking enough to make a statement in your space.
At 8.5 inches tall and 9 inches wide, the fixture is pretty small. But since it’s crafted entirely from hand-blown glass, it should still fill your space with plenty of light. The fixture is currently available in two different hardware styles, so you can decide whether you want to see sleek black or vintage bronze in your kitchen. (That said, no matter which option you choose, the lamp’s canopy will remain a crisp, versatile black.) And since it’s damp location-friendly, you can snag matching options for your bathroom and covered porch, if you feel like it.

It’s pretty hard to go wrong with recessed lighting. The sleek fixtures will brighten up your space without demanding much attention—giving you the versatile backdrop you need to craft the kitchen of your dreams. Given this, it’s worth it to focus on convenience and functionality when shopping for recessed lights. And BBounder’s Ultra-Thin LED Recessed Lights promise to deliver on both counts.
“Recessed lighting is a clean look that is commonly used over countertops, islands, and other points of visual interest,” says Preston Gilmore, Lumens Expert at GoodBulb. In order to make sure you have enough recessed lighting in your space, he recommends installing one recessed light per every 36 square feet of space in your kitchen.
This budget-friendly multi-pack comes with six recessed lights. And since the lights promise to be incredibly easy to install, you can save money on the lights and on the install fees. The lights are available in four different colors—cool white, daylight, soft white, and warm white—so you can choose the ambiance that best suits your space. And since they’re also dimmable, you can flexibly adjust the lighting in your kitchen any time you need to.

If you’re looking for a more adjustable alternative to recessed lighting, adding track lighting to your kitchen is a particularly striking option. And Home Depot’s Hampton Bay Large-Step Linear Track Lighting is a great place to start. The traditional track light comes with three multidirectional heads, which you can adjust to illuminate those hard-to-reach spots in your space. And since the track light is designed to be compatible with other (matching) track lights, you can stock up on as many as you need to fill your space with light.
“Track lighting can be used to replace or collaborate with recessed lighting,” says Gilmore. “If you are replacing recessed lighting with track lighting, then you’ll want to [install] one light fixture for every four to six square feet of ceiling space.” If you’re using recessed lighting and track lighting together, you’ll want to consider other factors—like the angle of your track lighting or how close your track lighting is to the wall—when determining how many to install.
This track light promises to be easy to install, so if you're an experienced DIYer, you can tackle the process yourself with some research. And since the light is designed to be ceiling or wall compatible, you can get creative with where you add light to your space. What’s more? The track light comes in two versatile neutrals—white and black—either of which is sure to look great in your kitchen.

When you’re outfitting your kitchen with lighting, remember that ceiling-mount lights aren’t the only options on offer. You may want light in other, more underrated places—like under your cabinets, along your shelves, or even inside your pantry. And when your goal is to bring light to these tucked-away spots, your best bet is to invest in some under-cabinet light strips—like McGor’s LED Under Cabinet Lights.
Snag McGor’s Under Cabinet Lights set, and you’ll score three low-profile light strips. Each of these strips is lined with 46 LED lights, so the full set will provide plenty of light while you chop veggies or mix up a cookie batter. And since the lights are rechargeable, you shouldn’t have to replace them with much frequency. Each light strip comes with a dual-sided install strip, which is magnetic on one side and adhesive on the other. This dual-sided design should give you the versatility you need to mount your light strips, well, anywhere and you won’t have to worry about a complicated install.

Pendant lights are a popular choice over sinks, but sconces can look just as pretty. And Rejuvenation’s Carson Wall Sconce is one of the most striking options around. The sconce is crafted from lightweight aluminum from top to bottom, so it should be durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of your kitchen—but not so heavy that you’ll worry about it falling off your wall. And thanks to its 12-inch opening, it should give you all the light you need for a thoroughly illuminated kitchen.
The sconce boasts a relatively simple silhouette—one sure to suit many different decor schemes. And if you want yours to look a little more industrial, you can snag the version that comes with a removable cage. Even better: The sconce is available in a whopping 26 colors and finishes. So you’ll have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to selecting the right fixture for your space.

Searching for a striking pendant light worth hanging in your kitchen? Look no further—the Huxe Lanz Mini Pendant Light is a great option for adding soft lighting to your kitchen. This geometric pendant is made of ridged glass that draws attention away from the lightbulb within, which can be an issue with some pendant lights.
“Pendant lighting fixtures work in conjunction with other lighting fixtures in the kitchen, such as recessed and track lighting,” says Gilmore. He recommends placing your pendant lights about 4 to 6 feet apart—and paying attention to the mounting height. “The correct mounting height for pendant fixtures is 30 to 36 inches from the base of the fixture to the surface of the countertop,” he says.
You can adjust this light from 14.5 inches to 56.25 inches, so while it's not a great option for ceilings much over 10 feet, it is customizable. It's also adaptable to sloped ceilings, so if you need to hang the base on an angle, the pendant will still hang straight down. The fixture is also dimmable, so you can adjust how much lighting you need depending on what's happening in your kitchen.
Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 11.5 inches | Material: Glass, brass, steel | Watts: 43W | Bulb: Not included | Maximum Hanging Height/Length: 56.25 inches
Final Verdict
Kitchen lighting is available in so many shapes and styles that it can be tough to pick an overall favorite. But since Pottery Barn’s Glass Globe Cord Pendant is customizable, it earned our top spot. The globe pendant light comes in two different sizes and three different colors. And since it’s also height-adjustable, it should make a seamless addition to your space.
If you’d prefer a budget-friendlier option, the Westinghouse Adjustable Mini Pendant is an excellent pick. The pendant light is sleek and versatile. And since it’s height-adjustable, you shouldn’t have any trouble hanging it in your space.
Functionality
Your kitchen lighting setup needs to accommodate many different activities. And you may need to buy several different lights to get the job done. “Each light should be chosen to fulfill a function,” says Leslie Saul, owner and principal designer at Leslie Saul & Associates. Think about what you need your lighting setup to do. Then, stock up on different lights that can effectively deliver those things.
Adjustability
Many kitchen lights come with built-in dimmers, which you can use to adjust the ambiance of your space. And many also boast adjustable heights, which can help you navigate low ceilings, extra-high ceilings, or even slanted ceilings. These features will only increase your options, making your lighting set-up even more flexible.
LED Lights
“[LED technology] is cost-effective and offers the best light,” says Preston Gilmore, Lumens Expert at GoodBulb. LED lights are also an energy-efficient option. So in addition to being bright and budget-friendly, they’re environmentally friendly, too.
FAQ
-
Gilmore recommends a light temperature of 3000 Kelvin for a home kitchen—that should leave your kitchen a warm, welcoming white. “Why? For a home kitchen, you want a light that will complement the surrounding areas—often the dining room and living room,” Gilmore says. “A 3000-Kelvin bulb emits a warm white color that will provide adequate lighting in the kitchen while offering a welcoming, homey feeling.”
-
Gilmore recommends hanging lights about 30 to 36 inches over a kitchen table or kitchen island. “The reason this works so well is that it provides a good distance from the tabletop to the base of the light fixture to allow for kitchen prep and visual acuity,” he says.
However, if you want to walk under the light or you have higher-than-average ceilings there are a couple of exceptions. If you want to walk under the light, the best kitchen lights should be a few inches above the tallest person in the household.
For ceilings higher than 8 feet, Gilmore recommends raising "your fixture 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height." Note that neither of these exceptions applies when you're hanging a kitchen light over a prep area, like your kitchen island.
-
“[Kitchens] are workspaces—not only for cooking but also for laptops and homework. [And] they are gathering spaces for get-togethers with family and friends. One light won't do the job,” says Saul. You will likely want both general kitchen lighting and task lighting in areas where you prep food, eat dinner, or work. To ensure your kitchen is adequately lit, Gilmore recommends hanging one kitchen light for every 36 square feet of space.
-
In short, no. Commonly, pendant lights are centered over the island because it is aesthetically pleasing and will cast an even and uniform light across the entire island. However, some people may prefer to have pendant kitchen lights off-center to have more light on the prep side of the island and minimize glare on the dining side. Whichever you choose will depend on your personal preferences and what other lighting you have in your kitchen.
For this shopping guide, The Spruce contributor Lindsey Lanquist focused on including a range of different lights, which are designed to serve different functions. Lindsey prioritized lights that were well-reviewed by those who’d tried them. Since flexibility is important, she favored adjustable options wherever possible. She also favored options that were available in a variety of colors and/or finishes and tried to include options that were versatile enough to suit many different decor schemes.
For this story, we interviewed several experts, Leslie Saul, owner and principal designer at Leslie Saul & Associates and Preston Gilmore, Lumens Expert at GoodBulb. We also reached out to Bryan Johnson, CEO of Shades of Light. Each expert offered expertise from their field on choosing the right lighting for your kitchen, including the kinds of lighting you may need and how to install them.

What to Consider When Choosing Kitchen Ceiling Lights
While there are many quality products out there, different choices are ideal for different needs. Here are some things to think about when you are choosing kitchen lighting solutions.
- The layout of your space: Account for how high or low your ceiling is, how large or small your kitchen is, and its overall configuration.
- Purpose: You will need diffused overhead lighting for your entire kitchen. But you also might need focused support lighting over your countertop or kitchen island.
- Energy efficiency: LED fixtures can help you keep your lighting costs low and prevent you from needing to change bulbs often. By using LED technology, you also protect the environment.
- Color temperature: Decide whether you prefer a warm or cool glow in your kitchen. Choose LED lights that give your room the ambiance you want.

The refined Waltz model is produced by the German factory Favorite. Its design will be most relevant for modern interiors. The lamp is a thin hoop, in the center of which there is a small hemisphere with curls of decorations diverging from it, imitating flower buds on thin flexible stems. The whole structure is made of acrylic and painted in silver color.
The appliance is designed for rooms up to 12 sq. m. The LEDs in it are built-in, you do not need to purchase additional light bulbs. The design does not provide additional options.
Unusual chandelier Tavolire - the creation of the Italian brand ST Luce. Its hermetic body is made of 4 square elements, in which light sources are mounted. The base of the device is metal, painted white. Plafonds-squares - acrylic, in two shades - white and coffee.
The Tavorile model is perfect for illuminating high-tech or modern interiors. Its at the same time discreet and non-standard appearance will become a real "highlight" of the whole concept of room design.
The luminaire has enough power to illuminate a room up to 17 square meters. m. Built-in LEDs, there is no need to buy additional bulbs, no additional options are provided.
The Intersezione chandelier is another example of unconventional creative "thinking" of the Italian brand ST Luce. Its singularity is in the lighting elements, which are built into long straight polymer-metal strips, fixed in two groups "criss-cross". This luminaire can be installed in the living room or bedroom, office space or showroom. It will look especially appropriate in any of the modern urban or techno styles.
The Intersezione chandelier provides complete lighting for areas up to 29 sq.m. For ease of use, it is equipped with a remote control unit and the ability to adjust the backlight intensity. LEDs are built into the design of the chandelier itself, light bulbs are not needed.
All models collected in the rating, in addition to the unusual design, have one more advantage - compact design. They "do not take over" free space, which means they are perfect for lighting scenarios in small rooms with low ceilings.

The principle of modern lighting system is multi-level. Any combination of ceiling lights, if it provides sufficient lighting and zoning, is recognized as successful. Moreover, the style of the room does not really matter: the choice of lighting fixtures is endless.
Initial selection principles
Kitchen lighting depends not so much on the area of the room, ceiling height and operating conditions, but on the type of ceiling.
- A painted or whitewashed ceiling, alas, reduces the choice to a minimum: here you can install only traditional pendant chandeliers, lighting panels and side lights. This option simply does not have the technological space to use more modern models.
- Plasterboard ceiling is fixed at a certain, albeit minimal distance from the base ceiling. Accordingly, it becomes possible to mount overhead or mortise LED lamps.
- Tension fabric perfectly tolerates the neighborhood with any LED devices. But incandescent or fluorescent lamps "tolerate" only if the latter are placed on hanging chandeliers.
- Slatted ceiling allows you to use absolutely any lighting options and with the help of any devices.
Both the style of the room and the material of the ceiling finish must be taken into account. A plasterboard ceiling, for example, can be decorated with LED strips, a number of spotlights, and a lighting panel. But kitchens with a wooden ceiling are much more demanding: wrought iron pendant chandeliers or “hidden lighting” with recessed spotlights are most suitable.
What kind of lighting fixtures are used
There are many lighting systems, and any option can be used for home and kitchen. The main considerations are functionality and relevance to tasks.
- The chandelier is a classic model with several light bulbs that work together to provide enough light. Chandeliers can be of various shapes and types: flat ceiling, for a kitchen with a low ceiling, voluminous, descending almost to the table, with different directions of light flux - to the sides, up to the ceiling, down to the table, and so on.
As a rule, the chandelier is installed alone, but can be supplemented with spotlights or lighting.
- Ceiling rail luminaires are small luminaires, usually simulating the body of a lantern or spotlight, mounted on a rail built into the ceiling. In some cases, they can move along the bus, which allows you to place lamps and adjust lighting as needed.
- Railing luminaires - small lighting fixtures mounted on a light decorative frame. The option is similar to models with a ceiling rail, but more original and allows you to effectively decorate the kitchen. Do-it-yourself installation is extremely simple.
- Spotlights - this is the name of lighting fixtures of various sizes and power that provide local lighting. The combination of several allows you to illuminate the entire kitchen. The layout of point devices is selected based on the configuration of the room.
To illuminate the ceiling in the kitchen, several options are used:
- recessed - the luminaire is recessed into the ceiling surface, its body is hidden, and only the lighting panel remains visible. The decorativeness of the model is minimal, but such hidden lighting looks very modern;
- surface-mounted - the case remains visible, so attention is paid to its design. Overheads are easier to install, they can be mounted with your own hands and on a regular ceiling, unlike mortise ones, which need a technological niche;
- hanging - rare. The luminaires are fixed on a rail and hang down on a common suspension. Such models are popular in loft, techno, fusion style kitchens.
- Spot is a cross between a spotlight and a panel. The device has a small size, as a rule, a round shape, and most importantly, a movable base. A very convenient option for lighting the work area, as it allows you to arbitrarily direct the light flux. The kitchen decorated in this way looks very modern.
Spots can be embedded or overhead. Both incandescent, fluorescent and diode lamps are used as a light source. You can install spots directly on the ceiling with your own hands.
- Lighting panels - product dimensions vary quite widely. Several small lamps are fixed in a certain pattern in order to provide good lighting. A large panel - 60x60, perfectly replaces the central lighting fixture, but does not take up space.
- Ceiling light - lamps are located on the base surface. Below them, a translucent stretch fabric is fixed. Thus, the entire ceiling performs the role of a lighting device.
- Illumination - not suitable as the main lighting, as it is of low power. But LED strips allow you to shade the figures of the second and third levels on a multi-level ceiling, highlight the image, create additional lighting or color. The decorating effect in the latter case is especially interesting.
Room zoning: dining room
It is believed that for a small kitchen you can choose a central lighting fixture, install it yourself and thus solve the lighting problem. In fact, this is not enough even for the smallest room.
In the interior of the kitchen there are always 2 zones: working and dining. One single lamp is not enough to illuminate the dining table and all the work tables of the kitchen set, especially the corner one. So even the smallest kitchen needs combined lighting.
Dining area - here the light is not only functional, but also a decorative detail. Here it is very important to choose the design of the lamp so that it matches the home interior.
- Positioned directly above the table, the chandelier immediately transforms the dining area into a centerpiece. However, this technique is only suitable for a large kitchen, where it is possible to install other lighting options on the ceiling. In a small room, a hanging chandelier will have to be placed in the center of the room, and the work area will be supplemented with a variety of LED lighting.
- Several luminaires on long pendants are placed exactly above the table, regardless of the location of the dining area and its configuration. Ceiling lamps are selected in medium sizes: the more there are, the smaller their size. You can install 1 lighting panel that repeats the shape of the table. Thus, the zone is rigidly allocated.
- A row of spotlights on the ceiling also allows you to literally separate the dining area from the working area. The order in which fixtures are placed should be chosen according to style. The number of lamps should be such as to provide good lighting. Kitchens, photos of which you can see at the end of the article, are distinguished by a good lighting option.
Room zoning: work area
The zone needs not only good lighting, but also the ability to adjust the direction of the light and localize it. Work area lighting is always a combination of small lighting fixtures, one central chandelier is useless in this case. However, for the correct location of spotlights and backlighting, you need to find out exactly where the lighting is most needed.
- The first level is the area directly above the desk and washbasin. Lamps, usually spotlights or spotlights, are placed either on the wall or on furniture. The last option is more convenient.
- The second level is the illumination of the contents of wall cabinets. To do this, you can place the lamps on the cornice of the kitchen set, use LED lighting, installing directly on the furniture, or take advantage of the railing system.
The latter can be used to illuminate the entire kitchen, just like rail lights. Fixtures can be rotated to change the direction of the light and illuminate the desired area.
- The third level is decorative. The selected lighting is placed, for example, at the very bottom of the base cabinets, which gives the kitchen set an unusual lightness. Glazed compartments of floor and wall cabinets illuminated from the inside look very nice. Sometimes LED lighting complements kitchen fittings.
Lighting combination
Modern interior solutions allow you to easily combine different lighting fixtures, meeting lighting requirements and maintaining the style of the room. At the same time, one should not forget that light is a powerful design tool that can both decorate a kitchen and visually change proportions.
- With low ceilings , you should opt for flat-shaped lamps: ceiling chandeliers, lighting panels, spotlights, spotlights.
- With high ceilings , volumetric chandeliers, pendant lamps, and railing systems of any complexity are used.
The different shape and type of the lamp allows you to structure the space no worse than the color or texture of the finish. So the best option for both large and small rooms is a combination of lighting fixtures of different sizes. The large kitchen combines flat and pendant lights.
- Multilevel ceiling , on the one hand, allows the use of any type of luminaires, on the other hand, it puts forward more stringent requirements for the choice. The general design principles are as follows:
- illumination is placed on the side surfaces of figures of the second or third level. It does not so much illuminate as it highlights an interesting solution;
- spotlights are placed along the perimeter, on the flat surface of the figure of the second level, in ceiling niches;
- pendant lamps are best placed above the dining area. They are mounted only on the first level of a multi-level ceiling;
- lighting panels are installed flush with the main ceiling or on the base surface.
