Suite LED Shelf and Reading Light by Lievore Altherr Molina for VibiaThe bedroom is a sanctuary—a personal, intimate living space that can create a range of desired moods from serenity to inspiration to confidence. The reading wall light, once a simple implement for illuminating the room, has become a more complex and desired feature with multiple functions. Whether having a USB port for device charging, a shelf for extra storage, or ambient glow while reading, the bedside reading light has changed significantly into a desirable, multi-functional piece that customizes the décor.
USB Bedside Reading Lights
Pixo Wall Light by Fernando Pardo, Pablo Pardo for Pablo DesignsUniversally appealing, a modern wall light with a USB port is a must-have. Whether charging a phone at night or plugging in a desired accessory so it’s always powered up and at the ready, wall lights with USB ports add that little extra customization to the room—a 21st Century necessity, really. Many styles and designs include these helpful ports as well, allowing the room to maintain a certain desired style while gaining functionality.
The slim, minimalist look frees up needed space while providing an even, clean glow in the room, allowing the bedroom to maintain modern functionality while looking less traditional.
Wall Lighting with Storage
1 Light Wall Sconce with Shelf by DainoliteWith lighting the room as the basic function, many pieces contain shelf space. When paired with the USB port, the shelf can be just the right size for a phone to charge all night while staying out of sight. Depending on the size, a shelf can also hold a small house plant such as a succulent or an alarm clock if the goal is to get the phones out of the bedroom.
Ambient Reading Lights
Edge Reader Mini LED Wall Sconce by Astro LightingIf reading while in bed before turning in for the night, many lights provide a bright, direct glow to illuminate the page. The sleek, minimalist design keeps the fixture itself out of the way, allowing the functionality to shine. An ambient glow provides a touch of light to accent the darkness, while a soft, focused beam effectively illuminates the page. Additionally, the light can be adjusted to provide the perfect angle.
For hidden functionality appearing only when needed, an extendable reading light can fold out from under a mounted wall light, delivering bright light to read under, or ambient lighting if turned toward the wall or floor.
Levo LED Sconce with USB Charger by Nick Sheridan for CernoBedside wall lights have changed considerably over the years. As needs grow and technology progresses, even light fixtures have become multi-functional hubs in the home. Whether it’s to save space or to be more efficient with completing tasks, wall lights have something for everyone: the subtle addition of a USB port maintains the style of the piece (and the room) while providing further function; shelving, no matter what length, can hold a needed accessory or introduce further decorative touch to the décor; and an adjustable, focused light ensures the reading experience before bed is always optimal.

Bedroom wall lighting ideas – 17 smart ways to light your space
We've curated the best bedroom wall lighting ideas to help you on your way to creating a dream bedroom scheme.
1. Set up wall lights beside the bed
(Image credit: Future / Jody Stewart)
'In smaller schemes, consider positioning a wall sconce or pendant on either side of the bed, as this will free up valuable table and floor space whilst drawing the eye upwards and giving the illusion of additional space,' explains Claire Anstey, Lighting Buyer at Heal’s . 'An elegant bedroom lighting idea, a fixture can also create a designer, boutique hotel room feel as it casts a warm glow throughout the space. '
2. Use wall lights in a small bedroom
(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)
‘Consider different types of lighting fittings, not just the light they provide,’ advises Peter Bowles, founder and MD, Original BTC . ‘Wall-mounted lights are great space-savers in small, low-ceilinged rooms and are a perfect small bedroom design idea for creating a clean, boutique hotel look.’
Remember to illuminate areas such as dressing tables, wardrobes and reading nooks, where more focused task lighting is required.
3. Choose a light that matches your decorating scheme
(Image credit: Future / Emma Lee)
Lighting is no longer just functional; it has become a home accessory and sometimes even a design object. There are so many design-led lights out there with the purpose of injecting personality to your interior design. Don’t just stop with a cool shade when you plan bedroom lighting. Think about the fittings too, like the cord and cable. Make a statement with a bright-colored fabric electrical cord to add some punch and hang them purposefully low for a designer feel.
4. Add color with lighting
(Image credit: Beate Heuman / Simon Brown)
Wall-mounted swing-arm bedside lights are a neat way to provide direct and adjustable light for reading in bed, and make for great above the bed decor ideas. In a room deliberately conceived to not feel overly designed, interior designer Beata Heuman suggests choosing shades in different yet complementary colors.
5. Position wall lamps above the bed
(Image credit: Future / Alicia Taylor)
Negate the need for a bedside table by positioning wall lights above the bed. Opting for a lamp that can be wall-mounted allows you the freedom to move secondary furniture around more freely, such as bedside tables. It also means the space isn’t taken up, preventing you using the surface for cups, vases and books.

A big trend for homes, feature wall lighting can be creative, show-stopping or even a little whacky, depending on your style. It can also be used to illuminate shadowy areas and bring artwork or display items into focus. Try to think of the space as a blank canvas and work out where you have sources of natural light, and where you’ll need a helping hand.
‘The lights beside your bed are probably the most important in your home; used daily, they are essential all year round and, what's more, they are likely to be the most prominent accessories in your bedroom,’ says Lucinda Waterhouse, director at OKA .
7. Choose an on-trend metal lamp
(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)
Metallic finishes are as popular as ever, especially brass, the metal of the moment. Everything from bedroom ceiling lighting to wall lights, to table lamps – even light switches and dimmers with brass finishes – get full marks in the style stakes. With lighting designs being pared back to original shapes, single shade pendants are ideal for monochromatic and neutral bedroom schemes as they stand out.
8.
Up your bedroom lighting scheme(Image credit: Future / Paul Raeside)
‘Few things are more irritating than not having good-quality light to read by and sometimes a bedside wall light will do the job,’ says lighting designer Sally Storey of John Cullen Lighting .
Good lighting can make a small bedroom feel bigger or add intimacy to a larger room. Bedside lighting is a great idea for beds that you want to make a statement of, but ambient lighting isn’t always enough, so incorporate subtle additions with downlights or uplights.
9. Highlight characterful features
(Image credit: Future / Jonathan Gooch)
Downlights can be useful as a means of highlighting features, such as the artwork above the bed in this scheme. Choose a fitting with 360-degree rotation for extra flexibility.
10. Incorporate reading lights
(Image credit: Future / Alicia Taylor)
A colorful headboard like this one draws the eye in. A pair of discreet, fitted reading lights is an optional, practical addition. Left on before bedtime, they will highlight a striking bedstead as well providing task light. 'If you’re installing very practical and directional reading lights, make sure they are on separate circuits so that they can be controlled independently of the mood lighting,' advises interior designer Staffan Tollgård .

A wall light doesn't have to be simple, understated or discreet. As well as functional, lighting should be fun. If employing an interior designer, have them work architectural LED wall lights into your bedroom for a truly unique aesthetic. Wall lights that are LED lit are very energy efficient as they use a very minimal amount of power to maintain a high output of illumination.
12. Choose an adjustable option
(Image credit: Future / Adrian Briscoe)
The continuing popularity of industrial-style lighting, such as workshop adjustable wall lights, show no sign of letting up. 'These are particularly popular when combined with the traditional style filament light bulbs. The quality, output and colour of LEDs means that they will transform the way we light our homes,' explains Mark Holloway, Holloways of Ludlow .
13. Embrace natural materials
(Image credit: Kitesgrove / Mark Bolton Photography)
Introducing wall lamps with woven rattan shades in honey tones is a brilliant way to bring texture and warmth to blue bedrooms – while they may be naturally calming, myriad shades of blue can run the risk of feeling cold, especially in north facing bedrooms rooms.
'We have seen a growing trend of customers opting for natural materials in their lighting choices - a lovely touch as the illumination thrown around the room through a rattan or wicker shade can create a uniquely different feel than through fabric, often creating a more whimsical aesthetic,' says Helen Pett, design ambassador at Arteriors London .
As well as bringing vital texture to this stylish space, this wall light from Arteriors serves a key practical purpose helping to free up room on the bedside table, while its adjustable arm makes it ideal for bedtime reading.
14. Layer up a range of wall lights
Wall lights in a bedroom needn't just be about illuminating your bed for reading; they can have other decorative purposes, too.
'Here, a picture wall light creates yet another soft, glowing pool of light on the wall,' says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief of Homes & Gardens. 'Not only does it show off the artwork, but creates warmth, more layering and interest in the room.'
15. Choose matching shaded wall lamps
Framing a bed with a matching pair of shaded wall lights is guaranteed to ‘create an elegant tailored approach to the bedroom,’ explains Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky .
‘Keep bulbs shaded with material as opposed to glass, unless you want to use the light source for reading,’ she adds. Not only do fabric shades give a soft, ambient glow, they are a brilliant way to inject color and texture into a room. To add zest to a neutral bedroom consider teaming shades in an uplifting yellow alongside with vibrant cushions and throws.
‘If you’re a book lover, directional wall lights are far more effective than wall or table lamps with lampshades, but they are far less equipped to create warm, ambient light. Consider whether you have room to install both,' adds Rohan Blacker.
16. Fit a wall lamp to a bed frame
If you have a traditional bedroom furnished with a statement four-poster bed, then finding reading light options can be a challenge. In a clever solution, Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors has had wall lights discretely fitted into this bed frame to provide light for reading whilst the bed curtains were drawn. 'Make sure they can be switched off from either side of the bed,' she says. 'Vaughan make perfect flexi reading lights, which we often use.'
17. Save space with slimline sculptural wall lights
One of the greatest advantages of the wall lamp is its ability to save space, making it a popular bedroom lighting choice with many interior designers. ‘In small bedrooms I really like using wall lights as opposed to table lamps for bedside lighting. Smaller rooms inevitably call for smaller bedside tables and when the full surface is taken up by a table lamp it just seems to defeat the object,' explains Irene Gunter, founder and creative director, Gunter & Co .
'There’s such a wealth of amazing wall light options available, whether wired or plug in – they really allow us to add a statement to the space as well as maximise the surface available for the bits and bobs we like to store beside the bed.’
Boasting simple sculptural curves, these contemporary wall lights are the perfect complement to this striking headboard design.
Where should wall lights be placed in a bedroom?
Wall lights are best positioned next to, or above, the bed. One on each side is the preferred choice in a double bedroom.
Think of wall lights as accent lights. On their own they probably won’t provide enough light, so it’s best to always consider using them in combination with another light source like ceiling lights or pendants. Most wall lights used to be hardwired and so are best to be planned as part of a renovation project.
However, lots of the newer ones lend themselves to a style where the visible wire is actually trendy and part of the design, especially when it comes to the industrial look. These are very easy to install by just fixing them to the wall, making them perfect for bedrooms.
How can I improve my bedroom lighting?
Bedroom lighting needs to be bright in the morning yet intimate and atmospheric at night to provide something of a restful sanctuary at the end of the day,’ advises Sally Storey, Creative Director at John Cullen Lighting.
One of Sally's top bedroom lighting tips is to consider circuits when planning your bedroom wall lighting ideas: ‘Whatever you do, be sure to have the lights on different circuits with switches by the bed. This is perhaps more important than in other rooms to avoid having to get out of bed to turn everything off.’

Bedroom Lighting: Photos and Bedroom Lighting Ideas
The adjective "subdued" is the best description of bedroom lighting. But it's not enough just to screw in a couple of low-wattage bulbs
Before choosing the bulb's wattage, it's worth thinking a little about the role of the room: what specifically helps you relax and rejuvenate in your private bedroom? Based on this, you can begin to think over the lighting of the bedroom as a whole.

Use light to maintain the natural rhythm of life
Lighting is one of the most important parameters for a bedroom. If the bedroom windows face east, the morning sun will surely wake you up, and the day will start briskly. West-facing windows, on the other hand, can disrupt the natural rhythm. Keep this in mind when planning the functions of the premises in the apartment.
In the evening, the right light will help induce drowsiness. At sunset, the light temperature changes from daytime cold to evening warm. In order to calmly get ready for bed, you should choose light bulbs with a warm, “evening”, color temperature of about 2700-2800 K. Traditional incandescent lamps are ideal, as they give just warm light, convenient for relaxation. If you prefer modern, energy-efficient light sources, fluorescent or LED lamps, then pay attention to the light temperature indicated on the package.
Through vision, information about the color of light is transmitted to the central nervous system, and thanks to the circadian system (the internal clock of the change of day and night, which affects the intensity of biological processes), the amplitude of excitations either increases or weakens.

Consider lighting scenarios
Quite often, the bedroom is used not only for relaxation, but also for other purposes. To be able to change the illumination from bright to dim, select the appropriate devices. Chandelier on the ceiling is needed for general lighting in the bedroom. In order to turn on the light in the bedroom (pictured) without getting out of bed, use sconces or bedside night lamps. To design the illumination of other areas, you will need to install a floor lamp and a table lamp in the bedroom, preferably with dense lampshades so that the light does not hit your eyes.
When choosing luminaires, especially for the ceiling, be guided by both the design and the direction of the luminous flux. Reflected or refracted overhead light is perceived calmer than striking directly into the eyes. In many modern models, the position of the lamps is adjustable, so that the direction of the light flux can be adjusted to your liking.

Night orienting lighting should not interfere with sleep
Night lighting - lamps, lights built into the floor or stairs - in which case it will make it easy to navigate in the night. You can avoid the painful search for a key by touch if it has a built-in LED light. Due to the minimum power, these special devices do not interfere with normal sleep.

Hang your sconces at eye level
To turn the lights on and off without getting out of bed, sconces are often used for night lighting. It is also used for reading in bed. The most convenient placement option is the lateral location from the bed at the eye level of the person sitting in bed (1.3-1.5 m from the floor level). It is in this position that the sconce is optimal for reading, and again, it does not hang over your head, and does not cause subconscious discomfort. Especially for reading, you can add built-in bedroom lighting.

Walk-in closet light saves time and nerves
A shallow wardrobe can be illuminated by placing built-in halogen lamps on the ceiling directly in front of the sliding doors. A deep closet or dressing room will need its own lighting. And there are options here. You can go the way of lighting from above, as in ordinary rooms, or you can illuminate the contents directly. The second option is more practical, allows you to quickly find the right thing, but requires more lamps, and emit a minimum of heat, LED or fluorescent.
Spot "halogens", just like incandescent lamps, get too hot and are dangerous for local lighting inside the cabinet.

Control the light according to your mood
A device called a dimmer will allow you to adjust the intensity of the luminous flux of a single lamp. Simply put, smoothly translate the bright light from the light bulb to dim and back. To implement the plan, you will need not an ordinary switch, but a dimming one that turns like a wheel, and special lamps that can be adjusted (this characteristic must be indicated on the package).

Use natural light to apply makeup
Use a light source with minimal color distortion as a last resort. And halogen lamps are famous for the highest color rendering index.
It is very important that the backlight matches the natural light as much as possible. Otherwise, makeup is more likely to harm your image than good.

The ceiling can be decorated with a shadow pattern
An unusual light pattern on the ceiling or on the walls can give the room a mysterious effect. But it is impossible to judge the shape of the shadows by the appearance of the lighting device - this information is indicated in the product description or on the packaging. As a rule, a symmetrical pattern or forest thickets is offered. You can try to create original shadows on your own by directing the spotlight at a composition of figurines, indoor plants - and you never know what other objects.

Black lampage absorbs light
, floor lamps or lustra with dark lampstains (as in the photo in the photo ) look very impressive, but only let through 20% of the light from the lamps installed in them. However, in the bedroom, bright lighting is not required if you buy a sconce not for reading, but as a night light.

The option without a chandelier will require professional participation
Quite often, lighting in a bedroom is designed without a central ceiling lamp. There are several reasons for this. There is no need for bright light. The chandelier hanging directly above the bed is disturbing. The low ceiling forces you to look for alternatives. So, a pleasant interior light, including color, is created by cornice lighting. The second level of the ceiling or special shaped products mounted at the top of the walls along the perimeter of the room provide space for hidden light sources - ceiling lamps or LED strips. Ceiling lamps, LED and fluorescent, are more powerful than tapes. But both those and others, both lamps and tapes, require professional installation.
Spot lighting, especially the picture of the starry sky built into the stretch ceiling, also makes it possible to do without a central chandelier, but with the difference that the light from the "points" falls directly. It is less pleasant to the touch than reflected light.

Play With Light
With its help, amazing effects are born, for example, hovering objects in the air. If you correctly mount the LED strip along the edge of the bed base, you will get a resemblance to a flying carpet or a soft cloud for sleeping, depending on the design of the room. If you use an RGB LED strip paired with a controller, it will be possible to change the color of the backlight and even set the glow algorithm.

And don't disturb your sleep!
Arrange the furniture so that the chandelier does not hang over the bed, otherwise you will not sleep well. Whatever your chandelier is, modern or high-tech, on a subconscious level, your “I” will always worry that the chandelier may fall and cause pain. The same goes for hanging shelves, skylights and massively framed paintings.

The bedroom is exactly the place where all the conditions for a good rest should be created in order to gain strength during this time.
It is for this reason that it is very important that this room be as far away as possible from extraneous noise, and that it be visually isolated, so that you should be psychologically calmer in it.
In order for you to feel calm and comfortable in the bedroom, you need the interior to be soft, enveloping, from colors and decor to furnishings and lighting.
Moreover, if you arrange the bedroom correctly, pick up furniture, and correctly position the lamps for the bedroom, then it will turn into a real oasis of peace.

for relaxation, which means reading your favorite books, watching magazines and TV, unhurried conversation, needlework, and listening to pleasant music.
From this it follows that for a good rest you need comfortable furniture in which you can sit in a free position, that is, one bed is not enough for a bedroom, you will also need an armchair or a small couch.
In addition, the bedroom should have a place to store the necessary things, so you will need a wardrobe, bedside tables, shelves and racks for various small things.
Thus, the bedroom will have several areas for each type of activity, so each such corner will need some lighting.
Central lighting
Traditionally, the central lighting is a chandelier located in the center of the ceiling. In the event that you decide to stay on a chandelier due to the specifics of the bedroom, you need to take into account some of the nuances.
In the bedroom, the light should be subdued, so the chandelier should have shades, ideally they should be matte.
It is also very important for the bedroom to switch on step by step, which can be provided by the progressive mode specially built into the switch.
In addition, experts recommend not buying a chandelier with a lot of glass or crystal details in the bedroom, because the glare coming from them can be annoying.
Moreover, the chandelier may not always be located in the center of the room, due to the configuration of the room, it can be displaced, in this case, the unlit part of the room can be illuminated with a different type of lighting.
At the same time, alternative options can be used in the bedroom, for example, you can create lighting on the entire ceiling area, as in the photo of the lamps in the bedroom, or partial lighting, for example, behind the cornices.
You can give your bedroom a new look if each part of the lighting has a separate switch, with which you can adjust the intensity of light in different parts of the room.
Lamps
Since it is very important for the bedroom to have diffused light, a special lighting complex is often used that illuminates certain areas of the room, this can be a backlight built into the bed podium or near the headboard, quite often the backlight is installed near the cabinets .
Luminaires also include any lighting equipment that illuminates a certain area without spreading light to others.
So, in the reading area you can install wall lamps for the bedroom, or put floor lamps covered with textiles.
At the head of the bed, you can put small bedside lamps in the bedrooms, which can stand on the nightstand or be built into the bed or wall surface.
If the bedroom is decorated in a classic style and has bedside tables, bedside lamps for the bedroom can be installed in the room.
The area where the dressing table or boudoir is located requires special lighting.
Most dressing tables are sold with built-in lighting, but if it is missing, additional lighting must be installed.
The wardrobe also needs additional lighting, especially if there are no built-in lights in the wardrobes.
Lighting as a decorative element in the bedroom
The bedroom is exactly the place where you can use a variety of lamps as decorative elements.
In the bedroom you can play with shadows with the help of openwork shades or lampshades, you can also decorate the bed with Chinese lanterns and other unusual design solutions.
