Wall Lights - Wall Lighting Fixtures
Lift your home’s style with wall lights
Whether it’s providing a functional purpose in lighting or dramatically altering spaces through illumination, wall light fixtures can change the mood, look and feel of any room of the house. Elevate your sense of style with wall lights that eliminate shadows as well as everyday notions for what home lighting can do for you.
Types of wall lights
Wall lights are great to place over the bed for cozy reading at night. Working from home? Tackle any project at your desk or reading chair with swivel arm lamps that move with you. Or position a spotlight with clamp exactly where you need it on your desk and adjust the arm and head to see clearly while sketching or painting. Wall light fixtures can showcase cherished artwork in a stunning new light or can provide dramatic accent lighting for bookcases or record collections in your living room or den.
Downlights such as a sconce made with woven sedge can provide a rustic design element that transforms hallways or bare stretches of walls with dramatic lighting. Horizontally or vertically placed wall lamps or vanity lights provide sleek uplighting or downlighting. Glowing orbs with a chrome base provide elegant uplighting that is easy to place on small side tables or coffee tables.
Use LED light panels to bring a modern look and a soft, warming glow to your living room that won’t interfere with movie night. Wall lamps placed over bathroom vanities provide crisp light to help you see curves and contours clearly while putting on makeup or shaving. Leave just your bathroom vanity light on when hosting a party and let the alluring soft glow from LED lights speak for itself.
Light fixture placements
It’s all about the flow. When placing wall light fixtures consider the amount of space you have and be sure to leave enough room for the lighting to have the desired effect. For bathroom vanity mirrors, the general recommendation is just under 7 feet from the floor or just above or alongside a bathroom vanity mirror whose center is at eye level. For showcasing works of art, portraits or photography, place wall lamps a bit above the midline of the piece for balanced illumination that is visually pleasing. Reading lamps in the bedroom and wall lamps in the living room can be placed a half a foot to a foot above your shoulders for ideal lighting to get through a page turner or read to your kids while seated comfortably on the couch.
Frequently asked questions about wall light fixtures
Q: Should you match ceiling and wall lights?
To strike the most pleasing visual balance, it’s best to continue the look or style of wall lights and ceiling light fixtures without using the same exact lights. Carry on the feel by using the same materials, colors and types of light fixtures to draw the eyes from wall to ceiling.
Q: How big should wall light fixtures be?
That depends on the space or surface you’d like to illuminate. For lighting in larger spaces such as hallways or living rooms, larger wall lights or LED light panels over 11 inches in width can have a dramatic effect. For reading lights or work lamps a narrower width is sufficient to provide focused light. The recommendation for bathroom vanity lighting is for them to be roughly ¾ the size of your vanity.
Q: Can you install wall lights anywhere?
The hardwired installation of wall lights requires proximity to an outlet. Be sure to select fasteners or screws that are right for your wall.

Contents of the article:
Lamps in the bedroom play several roles at once. This is both a source of light if you want to read at night, and one of the elements for creating an intimate atmosphere, and a full-fledged piece of decor.
How to choose it correctly so that it combines all the functions at once? We are learning how to repeat in real life the beautiful ideas that the sconces in the bedroom offer in the photo.
Why not do without wall lights?
When repairing, not everyone takes into account the place for fixing the lamp on the wall and for the socket under it. But as practice shows, then they still strive to correct such a mistake.
This is explained by the fact that the sconce in the bedroom above the bed solves several important tasks at once:
- allows you to increase the illumination in the room if the upper chandelier is not enough;
- creates a peaceful atmosphere, helps to relax, tune in to rest;
- complements the interior, being its small but important touch;
- allocates a certain area, because in any bedroom, in addition to a place to sleep, there is a division into territories for a different purpose (dressing room, work or cosmetic table).
Wall lamps should not be abandoned because they do not steal space in the room, but on the contrary, they are able to visually expand the space.
They are also easy to mount, remove and easily replace with new light sources if you decide to change the style.
What characteristics to consider when buying
Something as simple as a sconce can bring a lot of unpleasant surprises if bought without prior thought.
Before you go to the store or place an order, decide:
- with design,
- height and mounting type,
- body material and shades,
- type of lamps, their brightness and glow color.
Some of these characteristics only affect the aesthetic side of the issue. But the level of location and brightness will affect the comfort of being in the bedroom.
Which material for the shades and body should I choose?
Chandeliers and sconces in the bedroom can have parts made of metal, glass (crystal), wood, polymers, fabric, bamboo. The basis for the choice should be the concept of decorating the room.
If the room is designed in a modern style, such as a loft, then metal turning spots will match the industrial spirit. They also meet high-tech requirements.
Retro style involves the purchase of original sconces, for example, in the form of an old lantern or with shades, as in table lamps of the 20s-30s.
Lighting fixtures with fabric lampshades (plain color or small floral print) look good in this design. The choice of plafonds and the configuration is selected depending on what time the bedroom interior copies.
The Classic Sleeping Room is an area with a touch of luxury in furnishings and decor. It justifies the plafonds of complex shapes made of crystal.
Such sconces often have pendants made of faceted pieces of glass, which additionally reflect light and create a whimsical play of reflections.
Where should the wall lights be located in the room?
Depending on why the lamp is hung, the height of the sconce in the bedroom on the wall depends. If highlight target:
- to promote comfortable reading before going to bed, the ceiling should be located to the side and slightly above the eye level of the reading person;
- to highlight, highlight a certain area of the room or an element of decor (niche, picture), then the lamp is installed above (or inside) the object on which attention should be focused;
- to become a source of additional lighting, then the sconces should be located above eye level so as not to blind (but not too high so that you can easily change the light bulb or wipe the lampshade).
The logical arrangement of wall lamps - in pairs, singly or in groups (spots assembled in a row on a single bracket or from three or more shades in a row on one of the walls). On the side of the bed, one sconce is requested on each side, and there can be up to three light sources above the dressing table.
Other lighting options and placement nuances
Bedroom wall sconces should provide soft yellow or white light.
A group of lamps of the same shape, differing in the color of the shades, looks original in modern interiors. This solution gives the composition dynamism and looks fresh.
If the final design of a room seems disjointed, it can be brought together by using light sources in the same style in different parts of the room. So the floor lamp at the chair will receive support from the sconces from the same collection, located above the bedside tables.
Arm light is not the only solution for bedroom lighting. Some types of finishes benefit from hanging flat "boxes" of a square or rectangular shape on the wall. They are chosen for small rooms furnished in the spirit of hi-tech, modern or loft.
Ceiling lamps on movable brackets (as well as rotary spots) allow you to change the direction of the light flux. Choose them if you like to rearrange often or have not decided what purpose the lamp will serve.
Wall sconces are an affordable way to liven up the interior and make any place in the room functional. And it is not necessary to get rid of a boring lamp for good - you can buy a new ceiling lamp in the store, or make an excellent lampshade yourself.
In addition, there are many places in the house that require additional lighting. The sconce from the bedroom can migrate to the corridor, the kitchen or the living room, and serve there.

How to decorate the wall above the bed. Overview of options
Show more videos»
Wall sconces can be hung in the bedside area:
- above the bed;
- on the sides of the headboard.
Mounting the first option is not advised, because while reading a person will block the light, casting a shadow.
It is recommended to place the sconces above the bed in the bedroom on the sides of the headboard at the same level and rather low. In this area of the room you need to adhere to soft, dim lighting. But it is also worth paying attention to the location of the switch for comfortable operation.
Compactness is a strong argument for installing a lighting fixture in a headboard. This type of fastening takes up a minimum of space, fits snugly to the surface. There are no protruding brackets.
Headboard shades can be matched to the color of the walls without drawing the eye. And located in the center above the bed, they become a highlight.
To create a designer accent with a lighting device, you need to choose a more massive lampshade, the main thing is to know when to stop. The choice of any option is suitable subject to the style direction of the room.
Above the bedside table
The most common solution is to install floor lamps on the furniture near the bed on both sides.
A wide range of fixed light sources allows you to choose a ceiling lamp with downward or bidirectional flow orientation. The main advantage of these lamps is that there is no need to drill the wall with a sufficient number of sockets near the bed.

However, hanging lampshades and plafonds located above the bedside tables are gaining more and more popularity. The optimal mounting height is considered to be 50 cm from the surface of the bed.
This arrangement has several advantages:
- table next to the bed is not loaded with objects;
- focuses on the headboard area;
- A wide range of pendant models with a fixed or adjustable base gives you the added ability to control the light as needed.
The lamps with adjustable base are quite flexible and allow you to adjust the lighting.
Expert opinion
Olga Kovalenko
Since 2010 I have been engaged in interior design and architectural design
Bending lamps are suitable for a modern interior. Their design resembles a lantern. The priority of this model is that it has a small size, flexible base and can be fixed in any position. This design is attached both to the wall and to the bed frame.
Optimum placement of the luminaire
There are no specific requirements for the location of light sources in the room.
There are recommendations to help change the appearance, practicality and safety of the room:
- In the bedside area, the backlight should be placed at a level of no more than 120-180 cm.
- Wall sconces above the bed should be installed at a height of 20-30 cm above the back. With a headboard of 160 cm, chain or frame-mounted models are recommended.
- Depending on the person's height, the appliance switch should be located at the level of the palm of an outstretched hand.
- If the beam is directed upwards, the lamp should be placed lower. Accordingly, provided that the light is oriented downwards, the lampshade is mounted higher.
- The space around the dressing table needs more light. Therefore, here the backlight should be placed either at the top of the mirror, or on both sides. The direction of the beam must be even. Depending on the size of the dressing table, the number of light sources is selected.
- To ozonize space, pictures or photos, so that there are no glare or overexposed areas, it is recommended to use subdued light and a paired arrangement of devices.
- The void on the wall can be filled by placing several original candlesticks on it.
- To illuminate indoor plants, it is better to choose a plain shade.
- To visually increase the boundaries of the room, you should choose a sconce, the flow of which is directed upwards.
- In rooms with high ceilings, to create relaxation and coziness, it is desirable to give preference to lighting fixtures with a beam directed downwards.
Sconce positioned low
Headboard lamps set low will create discomfort and dazzle the eyes, but a sconce with a lampshade mounted high also provides little light.
Therefore, in order to accentuate the sleeping place, it is desirable to install wall lamps on the sides of the bed. And to avoid injury to the eyes from the lamp, it is recommended to use electrical appliances with a closed design in the bedside area.
Combination of several sconces
Designers, as well as people with a subtle sense of perception, create their own unique interior, emphasize the inner world and individuality, combining incongruous.
Very temperamental people can decide on this, for whom a room designed in the same style will seem boring. For example, they can install several electrical appliances they like at once in one space.
Combination of different stylistic lamps in a certain room is possible if:
- Sconces are used in a studio apartment, where there is a common space and a clear division into functional areas.
- The bedroom is decorated in a style where experimentation is allowed. These areas include: eclecticism, modern, loft, steampunk.
- The room is not small and has a zoned space.
Tips & Tricks
Before you buy wall lamps, you should consider all the little things: the mounting location, wiring design, color scheme, style, materials and overall design of the room.
When choosing an electrical appliance, the following criteria must be taken into account:
- In order for the product to have good characteristics, when buying, it is important to pay attention to well-known and trusted manufacturers, as well as a certificate of quality, safety and instructions in Russian.
- The product model of a lighting device should not only be easy to use, but also be in harmony with the environment in the room, fit into the style direction of the room. For example, choosing green and blue shades will give the bedroom a cold, gloomy touch.
- Keep in mind the convenience when using the appliance. It is best to turn the light on and off without getting out of bed and pressing a key. There is also a trick for those who like to sleep in a chair - installing a lighting device with a motion sensor.
- If you like to read or work in a horizontal position, it is better to choose a light source on brackets. Otherwise, it will be necessary to adjust to the beam flow.
- When choosing a light bulb, you can give preference to different types of lighting. However, the location of the backlight should be considered. So, matte lamps (incandescent) are recommended to be installed near the dressing table. Halogen and LEDs create yellow lighting, while fluorescents do not convey the color gamut correctly. In the headboard area, it is desirable to give preference to LED lamps, as they do not heat up, do not blink, create soft light, and are economical.
- The presence of a rheostat in the device will make it possible to change the intensity of illumination. This is especially convenient if there is a baby cot in the room. And the minimum power of the device will turn it into a night light. But in such shades you should not use energy-saving lamps.
- Bulbs should be taken with a power of 40-75 W for the bedside area and 100 W for the rest of the room.
