Bedroom ceiling light ideas – 15 ways to brighten up your room with decorative lighting

We've curated the best bedroom ceiling light ideas to help you on your way to creating a dream bedroom scheme.

1. Go for a large light

(Image credit: Future / Richard Powers)

‘The trend for oversized pendant lights is gathering pace,' says Charles Edwards, Charles Edwards Lighting. 'Hanging a light above a bed or dressing table is a smart lighting idea for the bedroom because it will define the area and add a decorative element. Lights hanging above a bed can be positioned slightly lower. Consider a light that is fitted with a diffuser, to avoid unwanted glare and reflection.’

A great option for making a statement with your bedroom ceiling ideas.

2. Create a layered look

(Image credit: Future / Davide Lovatti)

'All types of lighting should be considered when creating a restful bedroom environment,' explains Chris Jordan, Managing Director at Christopher Wray. 'When you plan bedroom lighting for rooms with higher ceiling heights, there is a greater flexibility in terms of the types of fittings that can be used.

The light cast by a shade suspension, pendant or even a small chandelier can tend to be too dim on its own, resulting in poor lighting. However, paired with a table or wall lighting this adds to a layered effect that can be built on when needed, meaning you do not need to compromise on a beautiful and key design feature in the room.

A general rule and bedroom lighting tip would be to use a flush mounted ceiling or pendant light, if the ceiling height permits, alongside table or floor lamps to create a soft warm feeling in a bedroom. '

3. Invest in quality

(Image credit: Future / Chris Everard)

Go for a decorative, design-led approach when choosing a ceiling light. 'In terms of materials, Murano glass is one of our favourite materials to use as the colours and effects which can be created are incredible,' says Chris Jordan.

'The crystal sparkles and refracts the light better, creating multiple spectrums of colour. Additionally, the skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating such pieces is second to none and only adds to its appeal.'

4. Incorporate directional light

Adding discreet warm white LEDs in the ceiling can help channel light to the right places. Here, they illuminate an artwork, which gives the eye something striking to focus on.

5. Hang it up

No space for a bedside table and lamp? Bedroom wall lighting or simple pendant lights can be suspended in the best position for reading, adding a feature that is as eye-catching as it is practical.

‘My advice is to go as big as you dare,’ advises interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch. ‘Large lamps make a statement and glass options are good, as they don’t look too bulky.’ Always put lights on dimmers; lamps should be on a 5-amp circuit and switches placed at the bedside and the door.

7. Take it to new heights

Pendant lights catch the eye and can be used to highlight a focal point; in this case, the beauty of the intricately patterned wallpaper.

8. Add glamor with a chandelier

The star of the show in this elegant bedroom idea is a sparkling chandelier, which makes a beautiful statement, whether on or off. A king-size bed with a unique headboard accentuates the dramatic effect in this design.

9. Choose task lighting

LED downlights provide the general lighting and wash down the tall cupboards to create a striking effect in this scheme. Adding a few LED downlights creates reflected light on the walls for a subtle lighting boost.

10. Keep it simple

Light fixtures don't always have to be eye-catching. If your ceiling is the star of the show, keep lampshades simple, understated and elegant. This clear, glass design is the perfect example of sophisticated designed.

If you are looking for ceiling lights for a colorful bedroom, which will make a statement without clashing with the palette, then why not consider a sculptural glass design? Sculptural yet transparent this pendant adds interest whilst not deterring from the vibrant blue walls and chinoiserie panels.

'If you want to make a statement of the lighting fixture, then a pendant in glass, metallics or something in wood or rattan will look the part and create a focal point in the ceiling, after all, your lighting should look the part whether switched on or off,' says Emma Deterding, founder and creative Director, Kelling Designs . Be sure to fit a dimmer control as it will allow you to change the mood and atmosphere with ease, whilst creating a calm and cosy feel when needed in the evenings,'

12. Choose an ornate crystal pendant

Statement lighting needn't be reserved for large bedrooms as this attic bedroom proves. In fact, ceiling lights can be a great way to add decorative interest to smaller bedrooms where scope for introducing pattern and color may be limited.

‘Ceiling lights provide an opportunity to be more creative,' says Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky . 'Choose a colorful or ornate piece to provide a focal point in the room, or for the more adventurous, a chandelier is a great addition to a bedroom to create a sense of grandeur.’

13. Hang pendant lights over bedside tables

If you're looking to light a small bedroom then hanging low-level pendant lamps can be a practical space-saving solution. In this space by VSP Interiors simple and discreet hanging lights free up space on the bedside tables, but also make a beautiful design statement. Positioned framing the bed to crate elegant symmetry, the lamps also help draw the eye to the decorative sculptures on the bedside tables while their metallic finish adds to the feeling of luxury.

With more people working from home than ever before, in smaller properties bedrooms are sometimes doubling as office space during the day. If you are looking to create a bedroom layout idea with a desk then be sure to factor in the right task lighting above the desk to make it a practical workspace as done here in this TG studio project.

15. Take a cue from the architecture

Bedrooms with high ceilings are the perfect place to make a large, eye-catching pendant lamp, giving space to really show off a statement design. When thinking about what lighting fixtures might best suit a space be sure to think about the architectural features that may already exist as this can help guide the design choice. Echoing the strong angles of the multiple roof beams, this pendant lamp with multiple arms in a brass finish is the perfect finishing touch to this loft bedroom.

What is the best lighting for low ceilings?

A low ceiling is a common problem in a bedroom. It crops up in period properties but also in modern basement conversions and it can feel a little claustrophobic. It is not a feature that is easy to change in itself but you can play clever games with layout, finishes and lighting to balance proportions and create an illusion of great space.

Make sure you consider the size of your room before choosing your ceiling lighting and think about the functionality. While a low hanging pendant may fit in a dining room setting, we recommend opting for something a little more practical in a smaller space, such as the bedroom.

Positioning lamps in the corner of a room will naturally take the eye out to the edge of the room and make it appear more expansive. Bedrooms with low ceilings can also benefit from one or two uprights, too, as they throw light onto the ceiling, which then bounces back into the room.

You may want to consider up-lighting above tall wardrobes and bookcases, which can make a ceiling appear higher, and recessed or wall instead of pendant lighting.

How do I choose a ceiling light for a bedroom?

It’s vital to consider both ambience and practicality when lighting a bedroom, especially if it’s a compact space. Choose layered lighting that can be used for different purposes. A pendant or ceiling lamp will illuminate the whole room, which is perfect for dressing.

'Ceiling lights provide an opportunity to be more creative,' explains Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky. 'Choose a colourful or ornate piece to provide a focal point in the room, or for the more adventurous, a chandelier is a great addition to a bedroom to create a sense of grandeur.

Consider hanging pendants over each bedside table for an interesting alternative to a table lamp or wall light. A dimmer switch is always a good option for the bedroom, it offers flexibility, providing brighter lighting for when you are getting dressed and softer mood lighting for bedtimes.'

Bedrooms are all about creating atmosphere, and mood lighting plays an important role. 'In a modern scheme, lighting needs to be both architectural (almost invisible) and also decorative,' advises interior designer Staffan Tollgård.

'Pendant lights should add to the design and enjoyment of the room. Soft, atmospheric lighting that doesn’t create glare can be achieved with angled downlights from the ceiling, while pendants next to the bed that hang down to between a metre and 150cms from the floor level add a beautiful touch.'

Can I put a chandelier in my bedroom?

A chandelier is not just for the living room or hall. In fact, in the right scheme, it can make a wonderful addition to a bedroom. 'Aim for a mix of traditional and contemporary styles within a home,' says Luke Thomas, John Cullen Lighting.

'In a period bedroom with decorative cornicing, for example, why not consider a very modern chandelier, rather than a classic option. Discreet, low-glare, architectural style lighting can work well with most schemes, as it will subtly enhance your chosen style.'

Bedroom ceiling light ideas can often be somewhat of an afterthought, mainly due to us getting over excited with the color palette, furniture and bedding. We might consider the odd table lamp sure, but what about the humble ceiling light?

We talk about layering lighting a lot, because it’s key to creating the right ambience in any room, and perhaps even more important in our bedrooms, which have to work hard as our sanctuaries too.

The main rule with bedroom lighting ideas is to have them on a dimmer, because we don’t want to be relaxing in bed with 'the big light' on full beam do we?

The key is to create beautiful subtle lighting with the ceiling light as the main focal point, you can go for a dramatic style design or keep it pared back and in keeping with the rest of the scheme.

Bedroom ceiling light ideas that will finish your room off perfectly

Most average sized bedrooms need a combination of lighting – a couple of table lamps each side of the bed, or wall lights, and a floor lamp in a corner for reading and the main feature – a stunning ceiling light.

We’ve sourced 11 ceiling lighting ideas for the bedroom that will cover any style space, from contemporary to trad.

‘Ceiling lights can be subtly understated, or they can be focal points that enhance the drama and sophistication of a space, like the fixture here from Arteriors . Either way, they’re perfect for upping the ante of the overall look and feel of a bedroom,' says Joshua Smith, founder and principal designer at Joshua Smith Inc.

2. Choose a light that creates a pattern as it glows

Hands up if you love a light that creates a pattern. Ikea’s MISTERHULT pendant lamp is handcrafted from bamboo which makes each one unique.

The top half is woven which allows the light to flow through it and it creates a decorative design when switched on. The other reason this pendant is so good is because it will go with any color scheme.

3. Consider your placement – it doesn’t have to be in the middle

We’re kind of conditioned to believe that pendant lights in whichever room, need to be centrally hung. But actually they don’t.

There’s a new trend emerging that seeing a pair of ceiling lights being hung above bedside tables instead of in the middle, we like it as it’s more directional and useful. Give it a go and see what you think.

This striking light takes pride of place in this white bedroom idea. Full of textures – the shiplap wall, exposed brick, wooden floorboards, velvet footstools and textured bedding are enhanced by the metal and glass pendant which adds an extra dimension. Playing with textures like this makes a room much more interesting visually.

‘Lighting in the bedroom needs to be layered as you need enough light for daily routines as well as low lighting for winding down at bedtime.'

'It is best not to position any light fixtures over the top of the bed where your pillows are as this is too harsh when you are lying down.'

'Placing an interesting, statement light in the centre of the ceiling provides a great focal point and design interest in the room, especially if you are keeping a muted palette in the space,’ advises Shalini Misra, interior designer and founder of The Design Buzz

‘The rise of the staycation has meant more of us are looking to add a sense of luxury and finesse to our bedroom schemes. Lighting plays a distinct role in setting a relaxing and indulgent atmosphere.'

'Nothing says boutique feel more than crystal designs and velvet pendants, so these will be making more of an appearance throughout 2022 as we seek to create a sanctuary from the busy every day,’ says Peter Legg, lead designer at där lighting . 6. Love the boho look? Pop up an oversized rattan number

The boho look rumbles on and on, so get on board with this oversized rattan light that has a lovely unusual oval shape. It looks fab with a neutral rustic bedroom idea and team it with loads of other textures – pampas (of course), tufted pillows, fluffy rugs and oh-so-tactile blankets.

7. Or if your look is farmhouse then go for a classic enamel pendant

Low ceilings, shiplap walls and white painted floorboards suggest a cozy farmhouse feel right? In this instance a classic rise and fall pendant will look great and fit the style perfectly.

It’s low key yet does the job and the rise and fall mechanism means you can move it up and down to suit your needs.

8. Pick a shade that’s oh-so-pretty

We adore this bedroom ceiling light idea because it’s both practical and quite frankly,  gorgeous. When it’s switched on the menagerie of birds create a pattern and out of the corner of your eye, could be real – well, nearly. But it’s charming right?

The brightly colored birds and wire frame allow any bedroom paint color idea to work, even a neutral color palette will look great with this design.

If creating a statement isn’t for you, then how about this bedroom ceiling light idea that’s prominent, yet subtle.

The design has a retro style and the roundness mimics the cloud puffs of the wallpaper on the feature wall idea, these small details are what makes a scheme work.

Bent wood designs give a fresh feel to an existing scheme, they’re modern and stylish and allow the light to glow through the slats.

Completely flexible, they work in pretty much any style scheme and add warmth to a white or neutral palette. And can we just say how cool this bedroom is with the rope hung bed?

11. Let your bedroom light steal the show

If the rest of your bedroom scheme is neutral, choosing a truly eye-catching ceiling light is definitely worth doing.

It doesn’t need to be bold either, it can be subtle and beautifully crafted and look like a sculptural piece of art. The days of dull round lamp shades have long gone.

What ceiling lights are best for bedrooms?

Ceiling, or pendant lights are the best option for a bedroom, and they work particularly well when you have a high ceiling as they 'bring' the light down so to speak.

There are many designs available, from handcrafted rattan, to bent wood styles as well as the trad round shades. A chandelier can look great if you want a luxurious feel, or opt for a design that allows the light to shine through and projects a pattern on your walls.

How do I choose a ceiling light for a bedroom?

‘First, you must establish the mood you want to evoke in your bedroom, and how you want the room to make you feel.'

'The ceiling light you choose should be an extension of your overall design concept. If you’re going for understated elegance, a simple flush mount fixture in a muted metal finish might do the trick.'

'If you’re going for high drama, you may want to choose something more eye-catching and sculptural,’ continues Joshua.

How big should a ceiling light be?

‘This is determined by several factors,’ says Jessica Davis, ASID Allied, owner and principal designer of Nashville based JL Design .

Most importantly, the size of the room and the placement of the light.  If the light falls over a bed, then you can hang it a bit lower than if you had to walk under it. I recommend roughly 6’-6” from the floor to the bottom of the fixture if over a bed. If over a king size bed then the fixture can be as wide as 30-33”. If the fixture is not over the bed, it will need to hang higher, if you have a queen size bed I don't recommend going larger than 24-26” wide.’

The bedroom is synonymous with tranquility and intimate atmosphere. This is the place where you can relax after a hard day and fall asleep peacefully. A friendly, cozy interior can be easily created using upholstered furniture, suitable textiles and light. The latter is extremely important, as the right lighting will relieve stress, keep you calm and help you cope with cold winter mornings.

Bedroom on the cardinal points: features of natural lighting in the room

An important factor in the bedroom is that this room can be perfectly quiet, away from the noise of other family members and those who come from outside. If possible, make sure the windows face east or north. This will give you more sunlight during the day, and the morning sun will help you get up, filling the space with natural energy. If you like to sleep longer, the sun entering the room can disturb you, so take care of blackout curtains. Thanks to artificial lighting, you can illuminate the rest room in the best way, even without paying attention to the cardinal points.

How to arrange artificial light in the bedroom?

Lighting can do wonders. In addition to influencing the mood, it can adjust the proportions in the interior, emphasize textures and colors. Everything in the bedroom is very important. As befits an oasis of relaxation, lighting should be soothing and bring pleasant associations. After all, not all mornings are perfect, and beautiful arrangements can improve your mood. So how to skillfully organize the light in the bedroom? Here are some good tips.

Light in the bedroom: fashionable lamp design

The main preference of the bedroom interior is a designer pendant lamp. A thin and delicate lamp, it can hang, for example, just above the bed above the headboard or at the central point of the ceiling. The ideal light should be soft without disturbing the eyes. An ideal choice would be lamps with light fabric shades, such as linen or cotton, or milky glass. In addition to the design of your dream lamp, take care of a light bulb that gives a pleasant glow. Best of all, those whose light is warm and similar in color to daylight.

If you like to play with light intensity, buy an adjustable dimmer. Thanks to him, you will create the mood in the bedroom that you want at this moment.

Light in the bedroom on the ceiling: chandelier decoration

Some people choose the original chandelier. Remember, however, that impressive chandeliers are only suitable for large, tall rooms. If the bedroom is low and cozy, there is a risk that you will overcrowd it. The light emitted by the chandelier can be directed or diffused. In the bedroom, the second option, which will make the interior evenly lit, will work better.

When choosing bulbs for a chandelier, just like with pendant lights, make sure you choose the right power. If you have additional side lighting, then it is better to choose 35-40 W incandescent lamps in the chandelier and a warm color that ranges from 2700 to 3200 K.

Bedroom - a second light: which bedside lamps should you choose?

Few people can imagine a bedroom without side lighting. Today there are still so-called table lamps placed on bedside tables. When choosing a model of this type, remember that the bottom edge of the curtain should not be higher than 50 cm from the level of the mattress. Thanks to this, you will ensure maximum comfort for your eyes, so as not to get tired during the evening reading.

If you like a harmonious, consistent arrangement, place two identical models of lamps on both sides of the bed. For a night light, a 25 W lamp and a neutral light color are enough.

Bedroom Reading Sconce - Directional Light

Another bedroom lighting idea is wall sconces. Usually small and stylish, they prove to be an understated decoration and a great way to create an intimate mood. Although sconces provide directional light, they complement bedrooms perfectly. Remember that if you point the light source up, the room will appear optically higher. If, however, the sconce will glow downwards, the ceiling will visually drop, and a romantic atmosphere will inhabit the interior. Sconces can perfectly replace classic table lamps. This solution will work well in small interiors where there is no space for nightstands on either side of the bed.

If you want to recreate the mood in the interior, while providing yourself with a functional light source, install a wall lamp with a rotating base. Thanks to this, you will be able to regularly control the lighting. What lamps will look best in wall lamps? Depending on your preferences - 25 or 40 watts.

Light position in the bedroom: floor lamp

Floor lamps look great in large, spacious interiors. Sometimes they are used as auxiliary lighting, creating a lyrical atmosphere in the bedroom, and also as reading lamps. However, few people know that floor lamps can visually change the proportions in the interior. Models with a transparent shade that diffuses light well will make the room look much larger. In turn, options that give light directly to the ceiling will visually enlarge the interior. A floor lamp can stand right next to the bed or together with a chair and table, if any, in the interior. Thanks to this, you will create a cozy corner, ideal for reading.

Bedroom spotlight: halogens

Some people prefer halogen spotlights instead of the classic ceiling lamp. However, nothing strange, such lighting can be very effective and practical. Thanks to halogens, you can effectively illuminate all the nooks and crannies in the interior, for example, a niche in the wall, a favorite picture or the space above the chest of drawers. When deciding on the purchase of halogen lamps, it is worth noting not only their power, but also the angle of incidence of light.

The most popular light angle is 60 degrees, which makes the glow relatively diffuse. For some, halogens are associated with very bright light that does not fit into the bedroom niche. However, it is worth knowing that practical dimmers can also be used in the case of halogens.

Lighting in the bedroom on a stretch ceiling - spectacular LEDs

Another idea for bedroom lighting is modern LED strips. LEDs, like compact fluorescent lamps, are energy-saving light sources. They are characterized by extremely low power consumption - from 0.6 W to 0.8 W - depending on the color. An important advantage of LED strips is the ability to change the intensity of light, as well as their color. Then they must be supplied with a transformer and controlled using a special RGB controller. This type of lighting will look especially impressive in bedrooms with false ceilings or decorative stripes.

Every experienced designer knows that to create a pleasant atmosphere in the bedroom it is worth playing with different light sources. In this way, you can successfully combine the advantages of pendant lamps and wall models, table and halogen lamps, chandeliers and LED strips. Thanks to such solutions, it will be possible to create a magical shadow theater in your room, which will add energy in the morning and calm emotions in the evening.

The bedroom is a place for rest and relaxation. Although its arrangement depends on the individual preferences of each, but the lighting design should always give a sense of security and intimacy. The photo gallery offers a lot of ideas for fashionable bedroom design.

Lighting in the bedroom: rules, photos, designer's advice

There is no universal bedroom lighting scheme - you need to select it individually. We will figure out how to do it together with an expert

The bedroom is a special area in the apartment, at least because here its owners relax and gain strength. Lighting in the bedroom should be comfortable, functional and relevant to the needs of family members.

It's worth starting with the base: in most cases, this is the ceiling chandelier in the center. With low ceilings, preference should be given to a compact lamp, large spaces allow you to choose a chandelier with several tiers. In addition to the basic one, several sources of diffused light will come in handy in the bedroom, conducive to relaxation and going to bed. It is worth proceeding from the habits of family members: someone will need wall lamps for evening reading, someone will need decorative lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Often, lamps on retractable brackets are chosen for the bedroom, allowing you to adjust the height.

If the bedroom has a mirror, it is recommended to equip it with built-in or side lights. In modern design projects for the bedroom, they often offer additional lighting for shelves and a closet. This is especially true when the bedroom is combined with a dressing room.

Ceiling lighting in the bedroom

Chandelier on the ceiling provides an even distribution of light in the dark. For the bedroom, it is recommended to choose frosted glass shades so that the lighting does not blind the eyes, but creates comfort. For the same reasons, you should prefer lamps with warm light.

Photo: Unsplash

For the bedroom, dimmer-controlled appliances are ideal.

Traditionally, ceiling lighting is placed in the geometric center of the room, but you can also opt for the option with a chandelier above the bed.

Photo: Unsplash

With a stretch ceiling, you need to choose lamps and fixtures based on the characteristics of the material. Fabric surfaces are more resistant to high temperatures, and the film may turn yellow and lose elasticity already at 60 °C.

Photo: Unsplash

It is best to use LED and energy-saving lamps for the bedroom. For incandescent lamps and halogen lamps, there is a restriction on the distance from the ceiling of 30-40 cm. In this case, the maximum power of light sources should not exceed 60 W (halogen - no more than 30 W).

Bedside lighting in the bedroom

If the bed is double, it is best to install lamps on both sides of it. When the space allows, you can choose table lamps on bedside tables - this classic option has proven itself well.

Photo: Unsplash

It is important that the lamps provide enough brightness for reading or working on a laptop, but at the same time they do not dazzle the eyes and do not interfere with the relaxation of those who are nearby.

Photo: Unsplash

A good solution in this case is dense diffusing lampshades. Designers advise placing the lamp 50-60 cm above the bed level.

Photo: Unsplash

Another common option is lamps mounted directly into the wall at the head of the bed. There should also be two such lamps if the bed is double. It is important that the height of the lamp allows you to sit with a straight back, without touching the sconce with your head. There are also built-in models of lamps, they can be installed directly in the headboard and rotated in the right direction.

Mirror lighting

Even if the mirror is near a window, artificial lighting will not hurt. The easiest way is models with built-in lamps. Another good option is to install sconces on the wall on either side of the mirror.

Photo: Unsplash

You can light up an existing mirror without installation using LED strip. If there is a table or cabinet nearby, a lamp with a flexible leg is suitable, which is convenient to illuminate the face.

Decorative lighting

In addition to functional illumination of individual areas, the bedroom can be supplemented with decorative lamps. For example, by embedding them into a podium or running a strip of LEDs along the wall. Highlighted areas look good - for example, niches in the walls, a collage of photographs or cabinet doors.

Photo: Unsplash

Decorative lighting is not just about aesthetics. It creates a comfortable, peaceful atmosphere, which is especially important for relaxation after an active day.

Lighting in a small bedroom

With the help of light, you can visually expand the space of the room. To this end, it is better to choose fixtures with the ability to illuminate the ceiling and built-in lamps. Dot patterns on the ceiling also look good. If there is little space in the room, basic lighting and floor lamps by the bed will suffice.

Photo: Unsplash

In a small bedroom, it is better to give preference to miniature models that do not take up space - voluminous floor lamps and bulky sconces will not be the best idea here.

Lighting in the bedroom without a chandelier

A chandelier has long been an optional attribute of a rest room. The tone is set by personal preferences, interior style and functionality.

Photo: Unsplash

Choose from several common lighting options:

Light sources are best selected based on the overall style of the interior. In a loft, there is hardly a place for classic fabric lampshades on bedside tables, and Provence will not allow you to stretch a “spider chandelier” with branch cords across the ceiling.

Designer's advice

Tatyana Bobyleva, interior designer:

- I would suggest starting not with a chandelier in the center, but with planning places, for example, a transition area, a wardrobe different functional blocks. It is absolutely necessary to illuminate each side of the bed separately. It can be a reading light, a sconce base, a pendant or a table lamp that shines down (or up-down).

Floor lamps with a self-luminous lampshade look very cool, they can easily replace bedside light sources, they can also be accentuated in the corners. Relaxation is supposed to be in the bedroom, so bright open light sources are definitely not needed here.
