10 interior design trends that will shape our spaces in 2023 |
With a focus on enduring materials, sustainability and design pieces with permanence, the latest interior design trends for 2023 are anything but fashionable fads.
Of course, the very nature of trends is that they are ever-changing and developing, but the overall feeling for interior design in 2023 is curating an adaptable, comfortable, and inspiring space that can both stand the test of time as well as be at one with your identity and style.
Our edit of the 2023 interior design trends focuses on both the fresh ideas brought forward by designers as well as the long-lasting styles and influences that consistently remain at the heart of interior design.
We cover everything from color to shape, material to styling in our round-up of the top ten biggest interior design trends for 2023 and beyond...
1. The influence of the natural world
It's fair to say, that one of the biggest inspirations for many when it comes to interior design is the beauty of the natural world. From color palettes rooted in nature to the warmth of wood and the durability of natural stone, establishing an indoor-outdoor feel in the home can be both calming and relaxed and uplifting and energizing simultaneously.
Chris Pask, director at Charlton Brown says, 'our attachment to the great outdoors has increased in the post-pandemic era and we are seeing this translate into the world of interior design. Clients are increasingly looking for a greater connection to the outdoors, whether that is a literal connection via roof terraces, balconies and beautifully landscaped gardens, or more subtle nods to greenery and nature throughout the home. This can take the form of colors, materials and shapes that mimic those found in nature and are known to invoke a sense of calm.'
Beautifully shown in this small bathroom by Jamie Haller , the House of Hackney Zeus wallpaper perfectly complements the original dark wood features and creates an immersive, indoor-outdoor look that feels classic and modern all at once.
2. Layered lighting
Piero de Marchis, director at Detail Lighting says, 'homeowners are paying far more attention to the way spaces in the home make us feel, as well as their function. Our homes are having to work harder for us than ever before, with an increase in spaces having multiple functions. From open-plan living areas to kitchen-dining zones, the trend for installing multifunctional lighting that can be adapted to suit the room as it’s being used is set to continue to rise.'
Gone are the days of simply turning on the 'big light', 2023 lighting trends prioritize using a combination of various light sources in a space. From welcoming pools of light created through cozy table lamps and floor lamps to practical task lighting in a kitchen or study, the right use of layered lighting can transform the mood and atmosphere in a room, and ultimately, help us use our spaces better.
In terms of styles and lighting looks, Ed O'Donnell, co-founder of Angel O'Donnell says, 'arresting silhouettes and unusual materials will conspire to create increasingly imaginative lighting and statement pieces that’ll create strong focal points in the home. '
3. Plenty of textural elements
Using texture in interior design will be at the forefront of our decorating decisions in 2023.
More and more of us want to create a home filled with cossetting and cocooning exuberance, and quite simply, without texture, a space will fall flat, it is the perfect way to add depth, dimension, and decadence to a room.
This room by Heidi Caillier Design is abundant with texture and feels wonderfully welcoming and warm. From the mix of materials used across the furniture, from fabric to leather, to the wooden paneling, striped rug, and sheer curtains, the design is rich in cozy character and depth.
4. Seek out sustainable options
(Image credit: One Represents Ltd )
Mor Krisher, head of design at Caesarstone says, 'as designers we need to be the ambassadors of sustainability and the design community should be on the front line of this issue. If we don’t design with sustainability in mind, then consumers won’t have the ability to purchase sustainable products. '
Sustainable interior design is now more important than ever, and brands, designers and consumers alike are united in producing and consuming products that are better for the environment. From investment pieces built to last to products created through recyclable and renewable materials, sustainability is no mere trend in the world of interiors, rather, it is the start of an important new era of thoughtful design.
5. Curves and arches
‘Edges delimit and mark out a space – avoiding them enlarges the inhabitants’ freedom,’ says designer Patricia Urquiola .
Sharp angles have been making their way out of homes for a while, starting with upholstery and moving through to surfaces and architectural details. Now, organic curves and fluid forms are taking center stage in everything from lighting to sofa trends and more.
Smooth, rounded edges and curvaceous forms can create a more 'soft' look in a space, helping a room to look and feel more welcoming, relaxing and comfortable. In this dining room, elegantly framed by an arched entrance, the large, oval wooden dining table establishes an engaging and inviting gathering point in the space, with the Carl Hansen Wishbone Chairs beautifully mirroring the tables' curves.
6. Warming neutrals
The extensive use of gray and beige are amongst some of the worst trends of 2022 and one of the interior design trends we are quiet-quitting for 2023.
Instead, paint trends and color trends are moving towards more warming and earthy colors in the home, with palettes of pale pinks, soft yellows, and cozy browns working wonderfully as refreshing, new neutrals.
Interior designer Natalia Miyar says, 'delicate pinks, soft neutrals and warm browns are great to use if you want to achieve a natural, modern and uncluttered aesthetic, and they make any room feel cozy and comforting.
These colors can be used as accents in furnishing or the dominant color throughout a scheme. I find that the shades work best when paired together, as their warm undertones create a sense of cohesion between each color.'
Interior design powerhouse Studio McGee takes us through why statement stoneware is one of their top trends to look forward to in 2023.
'We love good veining and deep contrast in stone, and we’re excited to see more of this trend in 2023. We’ll see this in a variety of ways, from the stone itself – less common ones like soapstone and travertine, as well as contrasting pairings of stone in one space – to the way it’s utilized. It’s all about maximalism, a design trend in and of itself.'
The beauty of natural materials such as travertine and marble is undeniably timeless. Most commonly used for bathroom ideas and kitchen ideas, 2023 will see statement stoneware used across the home, from sculptural stone side tables in a bedroom to a stand-out marble fireplace in a living room.
8. A union of the old with the new
(Image credit: Sarah Kaye Representation Ltd. )
Alfred Newall says, 'design trends are ever-changing, but the way we make furniture is centuries old. My hope is that we marry the modern with the traditional.’
As we cast our minds back for the sense of comfort and assurance that familiarity brings, 2023 will see us breathing new life into historic pieces and uniting styles of the past with design trends of the present.
Charlie Bowles, director at Original BTC says, 'nostalgia has been a huge influence in the way people style their interiors. Social media has led to a resurgence of decade-related trends like brass fittings, unexpected pops of color and creative shapes. Mid-century styles mixed in with modern pieces give spaces a comfortably lived-in look.'
From decorating with antiques and shopping pre-loved furniture to embracing the revival of 70s decor across furniture trends, using an eclectic mix of the old and the new will only make for a home that feels more unique, characterful and authentic.
9.
Color confidence(Image credit: Salvesen Graham)
With Pantone revealing their color of the year 2023 as Viva Magenta, and other brands, such as Benjamin Moore , listing their color of the year as Raspberry Blush , this celebration of bold and impactful shades of red embodies how 2023 is the year for color confidence and for embracing more unconventional and striking room color ideas.
'The past few years have dramatically changed people’s approach to their interiors and we are seeing consumers really finding their own sense of color confidence in their homes,' says Ruth Mottershead creative director at Little Greene .
Whether you make a statement with ceiling paint ideas or use the color wheel to curate a space rich with elegant contrast, beautifully shown in the living room above by Salvesen Graham , your home is a canvas upon which to decorate with the colors that bring you joy and happiness.
With thoughtful, sustainable design a key focus for 2023, as well as a nod to more nostalgic designs, these 'trends' will not only lead to us shopping more responsibly, but it will also see a rise in 'shopping small', and celebrating handmade, artisan designs and craftsmanship from all over the world.
The shopping experts at the ethical home retailer, The Citizenry , support this and say, 'in dissent from the uber-minimalist trend popular in recent years, consumers are shifting to a more eclectic collector’s approach to designing their spaces. Looking forward, this year, we predict consumers moving towards a more decadent, collected home. From Parisian opulence to Mediterranean layering, we expect to see an overlap with maximalism in terms of influence from other cultures this year.'
Through rough forms and rustic, handcrafted objects connected to ceremony, history and travels far and wide, we will turn (back) to a more slow, mindful living and ritualistic life.
Is gray out of style for 2023?
Gray is an incredibly versatile neutral color, and when used correctly, can work wonderfully in homes of all styles and ages, but, as the popular saying goes, too much of a good thing can sometimes become bad, and this is exactly what happened with the decorating with gray phenomenon.
Using too much of one color, such as a neutral like gray, can create spaces that feel cold and lifeless. When working with certain neutrals, we need accent colors and elements of contrast to make the space feel rich with character and depth. As we have discussed, we are moving towards a new era of neutrals, with gray and beige being replaced with more warming and interesting colors such as pink, yellow and even green.
As Martin Waller, founder of Andrew Martin says, ‘green is the new gray. The austerity of the gray, taupe age is over. It’s the age of all things emerald, lime, forest, pistachio, jade and sage in everything from wall colors, fabrics, cushions, headboards, rugs and curtains.'
Gray room ideas will never be out of style, they just need to be done right.
Are accent walls out of style for 2023?
Accent wall ideas are very much here to stay in 2023.
From beautiful wallpaper ideas inspired by the latest wallpaper trends, to a striking gallery wall, an accent wall can inject color, vibrancy and visual interest into a space.
One of the most popular ways to create an accent wall is through paint. From a simple block-color design to magnificent wall mural ideas, an accent wall can be a chance to truly get creative with color and artistic design.
Andy Greenall, creative director at Paint & Paper Library supports this and says, 'both consumers and designers are turning to color combinations that add drama and intrigue to a space, from neutrals in graduating shades which flow between rooms, to more dramatic color pairings.'
10 Ideas to Try This Year
With a new year on the horizon, I’ve been scouting out the 2023 home decorating trends and design styles to share with you. I love taking a look at each year’s interior design trends — especially the ones I think will last beyond the next few months. And, happily, most of the home decor ideas on this list should stand the test of time, making them easier to adopt.
Before we get into the interior design trends for 2023, as always, I recommend decorating your home in a way that makes you feel great. So don’t feel like you have to adopt these ideas if they don’t resonate with you or work with the style of your home. In fact, I don’t think it’s a great idea to jump on every new home trend that comes along.
However, you can’t go wrong in taking a look at the current design trends and styles, because it expands your awareness of what’s out there. I’ve found that when I look at my spaces with a fresh perspective, I can often repurpose pieces I already own to create a brand new look.

What are the top home decor trends for 2023?
In the coming year, we’ll see an interesting mix of new and returning trends. Some of the most popular interior design trends for 2023 include the return of bold color, natural stone surfaces, closed floor plans, mixed metal finishes, luxe living, statement lighting, and 60s and 70s influences — particularly in furniture design.
Several themes are appearing for interiors, with “elevated” being one of the keywords for 2023, and you’ll see that concept woven throughout this list. Luxurious looks, sumptuous fabrics, and understated elegance are in — no matter what decorating style you prefer.
While the decorating trends for 2023 are a varied bunch, they all have the potential to bring a sense of beauty, comfort, and style to your home in the coming year.
What furniture is in style for 2023?
Due to manufacturing and shipping delays over the past couple of years, furniture styles for 2023 will tend to overlap the trends from last year. That means we’re still seeing plenty of curvy shapes and nubby fabrics, as well as rattan and cane, boucle’ and sherpa, light wood and burl wood finishes.
While curvy, rounded, and slope-armed furniture is still on trend, many interior designers are ready to say goodbye to the curved furniture styles of 2021 and 2022, favoring a return to more streamlined, classic furniture silhouettes in 2023 and beyond.
In addition, if you’re buying a large piece of furniture in 2023, such as a sofa or bed, you might want to choose timeless fabric options like linen, cotton, performance weaves, or velvet — rather than boucle’ or sherpa — as I think the popularity of nubby fabrics in upholstery will wane in the next year or two.
If you really love the look of boucle’ and sherpa, you can still bring that look into your home via pillows, benches, throws, or ottomans instead.
Is farmhouse style out for 2023?
While modern farmhouse decor is still extremely popular, in 2023 we’ll continue to see this style evolve into a more refined look, borrowing aspects from modern European, Belgian farmhouse, coastal, and Scandinavian styles. This elevated version of modern farmhouse style shows no signs of slowing down in the coming year.
However, the original version of modern farmhouse style from a few years ago no longer feels current. Even Chip and Joanna are doing something much more sophisticated these days!
Jean Stoffer Interior Design – pendants
With the addition of luxurious textures, interesting shapes, natural elements, and a mix of vintage and modern pieces, farmhouse style is maturing into a classic, timeless aesthetic.
What interior design styles are trending for 2023?
In 2023 interiors will increasingly become less about what’s trendy and more about personal expression. Rather than certain trends increasing or declining, we’re seeing different design styles merging.
For example, modern minimalist style typically incorporates clean lines, neutrals, and black elements; while maximalist style favors layered textures, color, and vintage pieces. However, we see both design perspectives embracing the use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, wool, linen, and rattan, as well as many other trends on this list.
With the lines between different decorating styles blurring, you’re welcome to create your own take on any decorating style you prefer, leading to a more personal approach to interior design and home decor in 2023.
Read on for my predictions for trends in home decor and interior design styles for 2023, including kitchen design trends, furniture, living room decor trends, colors, and a look ahead at the winter and spring 2023 decorating trends.
As you’ll see below, most of these home decor ideas would work well in just about any room in the house — and with just about any decorating style — making them easy to adapt to your home.
Trend 1. Luxe living
Luxurious living and an elevated mindset are where things are headed in 2023, and you’ll see that idea reflected throughout all of the trends on this list.
Fine living doesn’t have to mean fancy or expensive — it’s more about refinement and an elevated approach to how we decorate and live in our homes. It involves creating spaces that feel sumptuous, sophisticated, and timeless — however that looks for you.
Leclair Decor – chairs – coffee table
The luxe look isn’t about glam, shiny, mirrored, or glitzy spaces. Rather, you’ll see rooms filled with warmth, calm and collected accents, plush cushioned seating, soft rugs, layered lighting, and pillows and throws in luxurious materials.
You might want to interpret this 2023 design style in a modern space via light neutral tones, clean-lined pieces, and sumptuous fabrics like silk, linen, and velvet. Take a look at Architectural Digest or the Restoration Hardware catalog for ideas and inspiration.
Lisa Tharp
Architectural Digest – RH Design for Kerry Washington
Or, you might embrace this trend via a more tailored space, incorporating layered textures, warm wood tones, rich colors, grid-patterned rugs, and luxurious pillows and throws. Think Ralph Lauren: understated, elegant, and classic with a modern twist.
Jean Stoffer Design
While these two approaches to the luxe living trend are different, both incorporate natural elements, layered fabrics and textures, and an overall appreciation for the finer things of life. The key to a luxurious space is all about mastering the mix of timeless elegance and modern simplicity, creating a space that’s equally welcoming and sophisticated.

Trend 2. The Return of Color
After the past few years of non-stop neutrals, in 2023 we’ll see a return of color in home decor, paint colors, and bedding.
Tying in with the other home trends in this post, a luxurious palette of rich jewel tones, soothing greens, timeless blues, and warm earth tones will dominate in 2023.
Jean Stoffer Interior Design
And, if you saw my post on the Top Home Color Trends for 2023, you know that just about anything goes when it comes to color choices in the coming year.
Ann Rae Design
You might decide to try this trend via wallpaper in the powder bath, a bold wall color in the home office, laundry room, or dining room, or simply by adding a few colorful accents to the living room.

Or, try layering your bedding with different colors, rather than just a monochromatic look. And, don’t be afraid to experiment with mixing different patterns, as well!

Trend 3. Natural stone finishes
Natural stone finishes are having a big moment — particularly materials that incorporate unexpected tones and patterns — and that trend will continue in 2023.
Some of the most popular stone elements include travertine, marble, exotic slabs of granite, soapstone, limestone, and other natural materials.
Athena Calderone
Other than stone coffee tables, countertops, backsplashes, and flooring, some ways to incorporate this trend in your home include handcrafted ceramics and pottery, artisanal clay vases, stoneware and dinnerware. Pieces that are imperfect and retain their natural charm and character are especially popular right now.

Zellige tile is also having a moment, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. Zellige tiles are handcrafted from clay, and each one is unique, retaining variations in shimmer, depth and color tone, making them a favorite of interior designers.
Pure Salt Interiors – pendants
Remember, there’s a certain charm and patina that comes with use of natural stone surfaces, so don’t be afraid of the scratches, dings, and stains that are an inevitable part of living in and enjoying your home.
Trend 4. Home Retreats
Tying in with the fine living trend, more than ever, people are making their homes feel like a retreat, with things like sumptuous sofas, plush cushions, luxurious bedding, spaces to do yoga or meditate, spa-like bathrooms, rock gardens, and quiet places to work becoming must-haves.
Pure Salt Interiors
This trend is all about capturing the emotions of your favorite vacation spot — whether that’s a beach house, European villa, or cozy mountain lodge.
Three Birds Renovations – arm chairs – similar arm chairs
As we update our homes in 2023 and beyond, things like ambient lighting, sound, tactility, and designing indoor and outdoor spaces to encourage restoration and relaxation are becoming more important.
Pure Salt Interiors
Some ways to make your home feel like an oasis include incorporating warm woods, breezy linen curtains, sumptuous sink-in furniture, and objects from your travels.
Trend 5. Closed floor plans
The growing popularity of working and learning from home means that open floor plans are losing their appeal, and in 2023 home design we’ll continue to see closed-concept spaces, with separate places to work, take Zoom calls, and do homework becoming more desirable.
David Frazier Co.
Our last home had an open floor plan, with the entire living room, dining area, and kitchen in full view whenever someone walked in the front door. While that kind of home plan is great for family togetherness, it wasn’t ideal for our lifestyle. So, when we built our current house, we specifically chose a closed floor plan.
If your current home has an open floor plan and you’d like to create more division, you might try rearranging the furniture to help designate the different functions of each space — for example, placing the sofa with its back to the kitchen and dining area, as shown below:
Studio McGee
You can also use screens to block off certain areas and create more privacy.
Trend 6. Mixed Metal Finishes
Mixing metals is a great way to add an interesting and contemporary look to the kitchen and bathroom. In 2023, expect designers and homeowners alike to embrace a combination of different metal finishes for fixtures and hardware.
Pure Salt Interiors
The days of using one metal finish everywhere in the home are gone. Rather, it’s now very common to mix and match metal finishes – not only in the kitchen and bathroom — but throughout the home on surfaces like doorknobs, curtain rods, light fixtures, hinges, and more.
Jean Stoffer Interior Design
Whether you’re going for a chic, modern, timeless, or classic look, mixing metals adds visual interest to your home and is a look that will last through 2023 and beyond.
Pure Salt Interiors

Trend 7. Statement Lighting
In 2023, interior designers and homeowners will trade traditional pendant lights for oversized light fixtures and lighting in interesting shapes.
Kelsey Leigh Design – pendant lights
We’ll see more oversized and large-scale lighting that acts as an overhead work of art. We’ll also see statement lighting in unique natural materials such as rattan, clay, ceramic, and earthenware fixtures.
Salt Design Co. – chandelier
A single dramatic pendant helps define a dining or living space, particularly in open concept homes. Not only does bold lighting catch your attention, it serves as a focal point for the room.
Pure Salt Interiors
In the kitchen, consider using one statement pendant light over the kitchen island, rather than two or three. Another great idea for the kitchen is placing a small table lamp on your kitchen counter for ambiance and additional task lighting.
Millworks – light fixture
And, with the current popularity of luxurious, retreat-like homes, ambient lighting is becoming more popular than ever. Candles, floor lamps, Himalayan salt lamps, and table lamps help bring a warm, cozy feeling to any space.
M. Lahr Homes – similar chandelier – console cabinet – here’s another cabinet source
Trend 8.
Natural MaterialsThis look embraces organic materials such as wool, cotton, silk, rattan and clay in earth tones and warm neutrals.
Studio McGee – cane counter stools – pendant lights
And since natural materials never go out of style, over the last couple of years we’ve seen the use of natural materials in home decor grow to the point where it’s probably no longer a trend.
Pure Salt Interiors
To bring the natural look to your home, focus on less faux and more real elements in your home. Look for furniture crafted from light or mid-toned woods and accent your spaces with natural rugs crafted in nubby wool, jute, or textured cotton to add warmth and texture.
Pure Salt Interiors – counter stools
Barrow Design
Trend 9: Black accents
No matter what decorating style you prefer, every space in your home will always benefit from a touch of black.
M Lahr Homes
Black accent pieces and hardware are a great way to add contrast, drama, and sophistication to any room, especially when paired with other neutrals like tan and white or rich jewel tones like navy and emerald green.
Heirloom Projects
Although this home trend is a carry-over from 2022, the popularity of black home decor, accents, cabinetry, lighting, fixtures, and finishes is expected to grow over the coming year — especially as we incorporate more statement lighting, luxurious accents, and mixed metal finishes in our homes.
The Life Styled Co. – coffee tables
Some ideas for adding a touch of black to a space include hanging chic black picture frames in the dining area, adding a black lamp or side table to the living room, or swapping out the hardware on your kitchen or bathroom cabinets for black versions.
Nicole Green Interiors
Trend 10: 60s and 70s Influences
Since my focus is on sharing decorating styles that will last, I almost didn’t include this interior design trend, because I think the current popularity of 60s and 70s influences (borrowed from current fashion trends) will be somewhat short-lived.
However, I do think some elements of the 1960s and 1970s, such as the iconic Herman Miller Eames chair and other statement pieces from that era, will have staying power, thanks to their timeless beauty and functionality, interesting textures, enveloping shapes, and natural materials.
Olga Ashby Interiors
In addition, in 2023, expect to see a return of the warm wood tones which were popular in the 1970s, as medium- to darker-toned wood finishes like walnut are making a comeback in coffee tables, consoles, kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, media cabinets, and flooring.

Up and Coming Decorating Trends and Design Styles for Winter into Spring 2023:
I couldn’t fit all the 2023 design styles and home decor trends in one post, so here’s a look at some themes that will continue to grow in popularity over the coming year:
Pampered Pets
Our pets are true members of our families, so any post on interior design trends wouldn’t be complete without mentioning how important it is to take our pets into account when making decisions about our homes. In 2023, pet-centered design will continue to grow as homeowners design spaces with the comfort and happiness of their pets in mind, from incorporating dog bathing and grooming stations in the laundry room or mudroom to building luxury cat homes in the living room.
Meg McSherry Interiors
Asymmetry
Expect to see less uniformity in 2023 design styles, as designers are embracing asymmetry and mis-matched bedroom, dining, and living room furniture. This home decor trend is all about using pieces in new, interesting and unusual ways. If you have a matching bedroom set, think about moving some of the pieces to the guest room, dining room, or entryway. Then, fill in the missing gaps with a new or vintage pieces here and there to create a collected, cohesive look. Nightstands and dressers can often be used in the entryway or dining room as well. The blue cabinet in our entryway used to be a black nightstand — a quick coat of paint and some new hardware gave it a second life!
Coastal Grandmother
As we move into spring 2023 design styles and trends, I think we’ll see a resurgence of coastal grandmother style, which became popular in 2022. This decorating style incorporates a mix of modern coastal style and Nancy Meyers inspired interiors, and its relaxed, elevated outlook makes coastal grandmother style perfect for spring and summer decorating. Some hallmarks of the coastal grandma home decor trend include white slipcovered furniture, light neutral tones, and natural and organic elements, with an overall relaxed, chic aesthetic.

Outdoor Living
Homeowners will continue to turn their outdoor areas and patios into luxurious staycation destinations for spring and summer 2023, with features like outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, outdoor kitchens, swimming pools, pool houses, greenhouses, and raised-bed gardening areas. See my post Modern Patio Ideas for Beautiful Outdoor Living for more ideas.
Pure Salt Interiors
Painted or wallpapered ceilings
If you’d like to incorporate an accent color in your space in an interesting way, you might want to consider painting or wallpapering your ceiling. I’m starting to see this look more often as designers are moving away from the trend of painting just one accent wall in a room, opting instead for a bold look on the ceiling. And I have to say, this is a trend I love!
Julie Howard for Timber Trails Development Co.
Whether your preferred interior design style is coastal, modern farmhouse, Scandinavian, minimalist, Japandi, traditional, eclectic, or something in between — I hope you you found this post helpful! The great thing about the majority of the 2023 design styles and home trends is that they should stand the test of time, which means we’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come.
Wishing you a beautiful and blessed 2023! xo Jane

Apartment design-2023: photos of fashionable interiors, trends and trends
Fashion in interior design does not change as rapidly as in the fashion or beauty industry, but still every year new bright trends appear or old ones are transformed. Our article is about this. We will tell you what techniques will be relevant in 2023, how to choose a palette and materials. We will also show photos of fashionable apartment interiors where these trends are implemented.
Listed current trends in video
Interior trends 2023
General
- Soft minimalism
— Smart home
— Back to the past
Materials
- Tactility
– Sustainability
— Innovation
Color Schemes
— Monochrome
– Spices and spices
— Minerals and metals
The general trends in apartment design in 2023 (photo below) have hardly changed: the trend is naturalness and at the same time functionality, minimalist ideas, care for nature and yourself.
Soft minimalism
Social networks of designer Daria Mayorova
All modern design as a whole is built on the concept of minimalism. Refusing mindless consumption, cluttering rooms and excessive savings that lead to more frequent purchases - all this has been around for a long time and is not going to fade into the shadows.
But in the coming year, the focus will shift to softer and warmer minimalism. If earlier for many it was associated with sterility, facelessness, cold, now minimalist interiors are becoming more lively, cozy and personalized. First of all, this is expressed in the palette: warm colors in the beige-brown paradigm are increasingly taken as the basis, diluting them with muted shades of red, yellow, orange and only slightly shading them with contrasting achromats. The color scheme is complemented by tactilely pleasant textures (as much as possible wood, textiles, vegetation) and smooth rounded shapes. The latter applies both to furniture and to the very architecture of an apartment or a country house. Minimalism can act as a base and be complemented by elements of other styles: scandi, boho, country, classics. This will add originality to the interior and give it character.

Smart home
Now technologies are developing so rapidly that it is difficult to keep up with all the innovations.
Bodes studio social networks
But you can and should gradually introduce them into your home. Every detail in the interior should simplify the life of the owners. All kinds of sensors, remote-controlled switches, timers, voice assistants, smart gadgets are an absolute must-have for any apartment or private house. If you are not ready to install a complex smart home system yet, start with local "assistants": a robot vacuum cleaner, remote-controlled curtains, water-saving faucets, multifunctional appliances, etc.
Another, larger-scale embodiment of this trend can be seen at the level of architecture and planning. If earlier attention was mostly paid to residential and front rooms, now even the owners of small-sized apartments are trying to allocate space for inconspicuous technical areas: laundry, dressing rooms, pantries. And this is not just a meter by meter space littered with things, but well-thought-out functional rooms that greatly simplify life and logistics in the apartment.

But in fact they absolutely do not contradict each other. Nostalgia in the interior should not be manifested in a complete departure from progress. Quite the opposite: discreet technical solutions organically complement the retro style, vintage furniture and original decor with history.
Designers and analysts are predicting a special popularity of the style of the 70s. It brings the much-needed positivity, adds coziness and nostalgic warmth, while curved and rounded silhouettes echo the trend towards organic shapes. Grandmother's chests of drawers, leather sofas and lamps from the GDR will find a second life, and the search for unique vintage furniture on bulletin boards will become a real exciting quest.

More precisely, the approach to their choice.
Tactility
Cartelle Design Social Media
The same minimalism has taught us to monolithic structures and a well-balanced picture without a single superfluous detail. Such interiors are impressive in the photo, but in real life for many they are not comfortable enough. Therefore, now in the projects of Russian and foreign designers, a common leitmotif is clearly visible - a departure from perfectly even lines and smooth surfaces to natural imperfections. The ability to see beauty in its original natural form is characteristic of the Japanese - that is why the Japandi style has become so popular.
Regardless of direction, interiors are increasingly using:
- Natural materials - untreated or unpainted wood, unpolished stone, marble with natural chips, clay, coarse cotton, etc.
- Non-ideal geometric objects. For example, circles or ovals with irregularities or unequal angles.
- Any organics and handicrafts.

Sustainable design

Sustainable design is now on the rise. It is characterized by long-term concern for the environment, as well as the ethics of production. Not only the composition of the material is important, but also how it was created: no damage to nature, the use of renewable resources, fair working conditions.
How materials work in an interior also matters. They must be durable, easy to care for, safe for people and animals, and finally, just comfortable. It doesn't matter if it's natural wood or bioplastic.

Innovations
This trend is closely related to the previous one. The desire to save natural resources and take care of the world around us motivate designers to look for and create new materials.

Therefore, every year unusual inventions appear at exhibitions. The priority is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, recyclable raw materials. For example:
- Mushroom mycelium skin instead of natural or synthetic.
- Alternatives to concrete from certain types of sand and certain types of plants. The production of such substitutes releases less carbon into the atmosphere.
- Seaweed or kombucha furniture.
- Cork for floor, wall, ceiling cladding.
- Non-standard use of materials - for example, facades made of recycled ceramic tiles or wood.
- 3D printed furniture, partitions, decor.

Consider the actual colors in 2023. If you are planning to renovate an apartment, these photo designs will definitely inspire you.
Monochrome
Quadro Room Social Media
The neutral base does not go out of fashion and will not lose ground in the coming years. There is also a trend towards monochrome and visual simplicity in the projects. The stereotype that gray or beige as the basis of the palette is too boring is not only dispelled, but elevated to the opposite absolute when this color becomes the only one in the room.
Every day we are surrounded by a lot of bright colors, fast-changing pictures, contrasting shots, so it is important to rest from such a large amount of visual information within the walls of the house. And the best help in this is the most calm palette, consisting of shades flowing into each other. They create the effect of a single cozy space, a kind of "cocoon", which gives a sense of security and helps to relax. A variety of expressive textures help to compensate for the simplicity of the color scheme: from cold stone or concrete to warm wool and natural wood. You can also dilute the overall monochrome with a couple of small contrasting accents to set visual beacons.
Herbs and spices
In the coming year, color schemes based on warm shades will definitely be in fashion.

You can use any colors, but brown, red, orange and all derivatives from them will act as a trend base. For inspiration, you can imagine a counter with various spices and spices: paprika, ginger, turmeric, curry, mustard, basil, saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme, etc. These shades are perfectly combined with the textures of wood, stone, brick and natural fabrics. Or, on the contrary, they can be balanced and refreshed with the help of gray, white, black or navy blue. This palette is suitable for any room: from the kitchen (the most obvious choice through the associative series) to the bedroom or home office. The photo below shows the fashionable interiors of apartments in these colors.
Another color trend is any shades of precious materials or stones.

All these are elegant, very noble and effective colors that add depth to the interior and make it more expensive. They look equally good in natural light from a window and under artificial lighting. In this "jewelry box" you can find options for basic finishes and bright accents.
So, pay attention to:
- Dense warm shades - gold, amber, bronze, ruby, jasper, carnelian, onyx.
- Cold tones - silver, malachite, azure, mother-of-pearl, quartz, obsidian, amethyst, sapphire.

1 Living-dining room in Slovenia
Traditional Japanese straight lines are traced in this open living-dining room combined with a simple table and sofa, moldings on the walls and skirting boards on the ceiling. The color palette is typical for the northern style: shades of white, beige, gray and black. There are many wooden surfaces in the room, there is a textured carpet on the floor, and these are signs of both styles: Japan and Scandinavia. A large plant in a floor pot and posters near the dining area were chosen as decor.

2 Living room in the Netherlands
From Japan, minimalism and accents came here with the help of a couple of spectacular details. From Scandinavia - light and pleasant to the touch fabric for the upholstery of the sofa, curtains and carpet. A large minimalist canvas in a thin frame above the sofa was chosen as the main decoration. It beautifully echoes the light chandelier and nightstand on the side of the sofa. And the coffee table in front of it refers to the traditional low Japanese table.

5 Office in India
Japandi style is great for a workspace like this one. Laconic wooden furniture does not overload a small room, and smooth smooth lines help to focus on work. The blue shade of the cabinet adds color to the interior and makes it more lively and interesting. And the carpet and beautiful composition on the open shelves add Scandinavian aesthetics and comfort.
