While bathroom rug ideas might not be on your list of bathroom must-haves, they are a great way of adding a soft touch to cold, hard bathroom floors as well as injecting personality into spaces that can sometimes be seen as purely functional.

Whether you're looking for a rug for a master bathroom or cloakroom, there's a huge variety available in an array of materials, sizes and designs. Rugs work particularly well in larger bathrooms with expansive floor areas as these spaces can feel especially cold, but a rug can help anchor the scheme, making it instantly more homely and welcoming.

If you are looking for a beautiful rug for your bathroom ideas then our gallery of inspiration, which also includes some tips from the experts, is the place to start

Bathroom rug ideas

While bathroom rug ideas can bring instant personality to a space, there are some practical considerations to take into account when choosing these less than usual bathroom flooring ideas.

'When choosing a rug for a space such as a kitchen or bathroom, practicality is key,' says Sabina Miller, head buyer at Heal’s . 'We would recommend a washable rug for use in bathrooms that can be easily cleaned when needed. However this doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style for practicality.'

Indeed, as bathrooms are moist areas, it’s advised to opt for either a washable design or one made from water-resistant, synthetic materials where possible, as these won’t be damaged by splashes and are easy to clean.

Regular rugs made from natural fibers may be used provided they are not in direct contact with water and the room is well ventilated. When laying a rug in the bathroom it is also important to fit an underlay to prevent the rug slipping on hard floors.

Large bathrooms with plenty of wall and floor space offer a useful opportunity to showcase ornate prints as this master bathroom idea by Penny Morrison proves. For a tranquil retreat, opt for delicate nature-inspired designs in soft neutral and pastel shades such as this elegant rug with a subtle floral design.

2. Liven-up a country bathroom

(Image credit: Future / Polly Eltes)

Adding a colorful geometric rug is a quick and easy way to bring life to country bathroom ideas. With its large expanse of wooden floorboards and neutral walls this bathroom could run the risk of feeling cold and echoey, but a simple cotton rug handwoven in India makes the space instantly more inviting while also enhancing its quirky cottage feel.

3. Choose a synthetic rug for a wetroom

(Image credit: Alternative Flooring Anywhere Shadow rug )

Opting for practical bathroom rug made from water-resist materials needn’t mean you have to compromise on rustic style as there are designs available that mimic the look of natural fibers. Combining the benefits of synthetic materials, with the textural look of sisal, Alternative Flooring ’s Anywhere rugs are a perfect wet room idea plus come in an array of tones to tie-in with your bathroom floor tile ideas.

4. Turn heads in a guest bathroom

Being used less frequently than master or family bathrooms, guest bathrooms can offer scope to be a bit bolder with interior design – introducing bold prints over rugs and wallpapers is a good way to achieve a head-turning look. Try contrasting an elegant Chinoiserie wallpaper with an antique kilim-style rug for a playful scheme.

'I chose something striking for the guest bathroom as it’s a bit of fun for guests to enjoy when they visit. However, if it were for my master bathroom, I would choose a quieter color as I would see it every day,' says Henriette Von Stockhausen, founder of VSP Interiors .

5. Double up on pattern

Vinyl bathroom floor ideas are a practical yet stylish solution for bathrooms as they combine the look of natural wood, stone and tiles with the benefits of being easier to lay and clean. With a decorative patchwork tile design, this ornate vinyl floor brings individuality to this bathroom while a Moroccan-style rug with a more pared-back pattern helps to temper the scheme and ties it in with the blue wall color.

6. Use a rug to warm up a modern bathroom

With their strong architectural lines and streamlined silhouettes, modern bathroom ideas feel stark and cold but adding a tactile rug is an effective way of bringing a layer of warmth to the space. Inspired by traditional Berber designs, this large rug helps to soften this black and white bathroom idea with its striking crittall shower partition and statement black roll top.

7. Choose an antique rug for a vintage feel

Are you looking for vintage bathroom ideas? Why not cocoon the space in print by papering the floor and ceiling in an ornate print and adding an antique rug on the floor? Contrasting with the pale walls, this antique Persian-style carpet really drawers the eye in this guest bathroom helping to anchor the scheme and make it feel quirky and homely.

Tread carefully on the planet by opting for a bathroom rug made from recycled synthetic materials such as this simple design.

'Because our rugs are made only and entirely from recycled plastic bottles, they offer all the benefits of a synthetic fiber rug – machine washable, really hard wearing, immune from moth attack, hypo-allergenic, stain resistant and even suitable for use outside,' says Tasha Green, director of Weaver Green . 'You can simply pop them in a washing machine for a spotless clean.'

9. Keep it simple with a white rug

(Image credit: The White Company )

For a touch of  spa-like luxury you can't go wrong with a classic, plush white rug to bring softness and warmth underfoot to a tiled bathroom floor. This simple design from The White Company is a brilliant rustic bathroom idea it lets the beautiful patina of this vintage roll top really sing.

10. Choose a stylish bath mat

If you do not have space for a rug in your bathroom, but still want to add interest to the floor, then consider a bathmat with a decorative design – every bathroom will always need a bath mat so this could make a good small bathroom idea. 'A form of rug or bathmat in the bathroom is absolutely essential in our opinion – no slippery wet floors in a space very prone to accidents without any underfoot buffer,' says Noemie Deed, founder of Cosy Coco .

What kind of rug do you put in the bathroom?

As bathrooms are moist areas it’s advised to opt for designs that are washable or made from water-resistant, synthetic materials as these are less likely to be damaged by splashes and are easy to clean. Low pile rugs are better suited than deep pile rugs as they are easier to clean and are less likely to trap dirt. With the rise of outdoor living, there are plenty of water-resistant rugs available which be used to brighten up your bathroom as well as your patio.

Decorative rugs made from cotton or other natural fibers can still be used provided they are placed away from areas where they could be in direct contact with water and the room is well ventilated. Using regular rugs in a bathroom can create a quirky homely look and work particularly well in large, traditional bathrooms.

Where should you put rugs in the bathroom?

Where you put a bathroom rug will depend on what type of rug it is. A washable anti-slip bath matt made from cotton or a synthetic fibres is a must-have by next to a bath or shower, however larger rugs that serve a decorative purpose are best placed away from wet areas and are not suitable for wet rooms.

Placed in the center of the room a decorative rug made from wool, cotton or other natural materials can help bring warmth and texture to a large bathroom as well as serving to anchor the scheme. Do ensure that the rug has an anti-slip underlay when used on a hard floor and that the room is ventilated.

Decorative rugs and runners are also a good way to bring personality to spaces less frequently used like cloakrooms and guest bathrooms.

If you prefer farmhouse style, you’ll probably like a natural and relaxed atmosphere with clean lines and well-loved (seasoned) materials. You’ll want to combine new and old in a farmhouse bathroom.

A vintage-style rug in front of the sink or tub may provide comfort and security. Over wood flooring, try a basic flat woven patterned rug in black and white. To avoid slippage, use a rug pad.

2.

Elegance in TransitionSource: Houzz

Traditional design components are combined with modern style in the transitional style. Sleek straight lines are mixed with soft curved textures in your transitional bathroom.

A rug is an excellent way to bring your transitional room together. A circular or oval rug will provide softness to a sleek lacquered vanity. A plush rectangular jacquard rug softens the strong macho tiling.

3.

Elegant and posh

If your house is all about glittery luxury, your bathroom should reflect that. A neutral color palette is combined with sculptural forms and dramatic accents in the glam style.

Start with a moderate color scheme and then add a vanity feature or pedestal sink with sculpted lines and metallic trim for a ‘Old Hollywood’ atmosphere.

Finally, add thick, plush towels and rugs in classical or geometric designs to complete the look. A thick pile rug made of wool or synthetic fabrics feels luxurious and is water resistant.

4.

Double Vanity

Double vanities expand the bathroom’s area, allowing for two people to use it. A lovely antique runner is positioned between two vanities, providing a nice landing spot for your feet while yet showing the tile in your bathroom.

To avoid overwhelming the floor, conventional bathroom rug sizes are often smaller. These smaller sizes are also easy to clean on a regular basis, ensuring a tidy and pleasant environment in your bathroom.

5.

Rug with a bohemian style

Color harmony between the rug and bath curtain creates a unified and pleasant aesthetic in this contemporary boho bathroom. A small layout does not make bathroom rug decoration harder; it just necessitates the use of a runner rather than a bigger rug.

The runner here serves to lengthen the area without making it seem claustrophobic. The embellishments complete the bohemian aesthetic by continuing the color harmonization.

6.

Heirloom Accent

This printed rug has an eye-catching heritage design printed on a soft and comfortable surface that can withstand daily usage in the bathroom.

The auburn color scheme of the rug complements the olive cabinetry, connecting the design together and adding warmth to the space.

7.

Floral Appeal

With its flowery curtains, a trendy bathtub, and a patterned stool, this bathroom screams for an eye-catching rug. And the vintage-styled mat is ideal for the occasion.

It draws attention to the pink in the flowery curtain while also contrasting with the black cabinetry. If you prefer floral patterns, match them with classic medallion rugs such as this to finish your ensemble.

8.

Experimenting with prints

Prints, patterns, and contrast are used to great effect in this bathroom. The runner with the tribal design is attractive and stylish, and it balances the half-painted walls.

Consider a realistic tribal pattern in neutral hues if you’re searching for bathroom rug ideas to combine with exciting paint or stunning wall designs like the ones featured here.

Remember that your tones don’t have to be identical to work well together.

9.

Texture reminiscent of a spa

After stepping out of the bath or shower, there’s something magical about wrapping your toes into a fresh, textured surface. It has the ability to make you feel as if you’ve landed at your own special spa, and it’s great for assisting moisture evaporation.

It’ll also be simple to clean and water resistant because it’s a Chilewich mat. This type of mat also adds texture to your design, making your bathroom look neat and presentable.

10.

Stripes that are soothing

A rug is more than a design decision when it comes to decorating a main bathroom with a tub. This can mean getting into or out of the tub easier by providing a non-slip surface for wet feet. Another Chilewich mat may be found here, this one in relaxing blue stripes.

The vinyl strands used to make Chilewich mats are recognized for their ability to endure wetness, usage, and maintenance.

11.

Blues that are cool

One of the most prominent bathroom hues is blue. It’s also understandable, given its associations with water, tranquility, and leisure vibes. The impact of a blue circular or oblong rug in the bathroom may be seen here.

Bathroom floor rugs with curved corners provide the impression of more space while also adding a softer touch. You’ll get enhanced sturdiness and easier cleaning with plaited bathroom rug fabrication, which is common in cottage rugs, that is a must for this area.

12.

Chilled grey

13.

Remove the cork from the bottle.Source: Sustain My Craft Habit

Let’s start with a substance that conjures up images of happy hour rather than modern bathroom: cork.

Cork not only gives a space a rustic appearance, but it also offers a cushion for your toes. Cork is a recyclable option, which appeals to both artists and homeowners. Even bottle corks may be used to construct a mat.

You may even take cork a step farther and use it as the entire or portion of the floor’s flooring. But first, get your room’s moisture levels checked by a flooring specialist.

To guarantee that the cork is a long-lasting alternative, proper sealing and positioning will be required.

14.

Experiment with patterns.Source: Yarn Inspirations

A vibrant rug, like any other part of the house, looks best when the remainder of the decor is neutral or basic. The pattern’s size or color scheme may be the source of aggressiveness.

In terms of size, you should want a patterned rug with a design that is big enough to notice from the space’s entry while yet having intriguing detail up close.

If you’re undecided about which shade of rug to choose, take inspiration from other bathroom accessories. Take shade cues from the rug to pick fixture finishes and decorations if you’ve fallen in love with that first.

Still looking for a bright pattern but can’t decide which one to go with? Monochrome patterns, according to some designers, are like blue jeans in that they go with everything.

15.

Take a walk in the woods.

Shop this mat on Amazon

Instead of using cloth, go for a more natural aesthetic for your bathroom floor. It’s a popular misconception that timber and water don’t mix, however this isn’t true when done correctly.

Why not utilize wood as the shower rug or in some other bathroom area, where it is continuously fluctuating between wet and dry, as it does on docks and decks?

Choose a bath mat that is completed and closed, and wipe away any excess water that gathers beneath the mat on a regular basis. Rugged, farmhouse, and Nordic design themes all benefit from wooden bath mats. It’s as simple as placing down a cotton bath mat to make the environment feel more organic and cozy.

If you’re going to mix materials in a narrow area like this, go with a lighter dominant wood and a darker feature as an accent.

16.

Faux fur is a good option.

In a bathroom, faux fur and skins give elegance and warmth. Choose a rug with a single color or a striking animal print. While you should choose a rug that complements the decor of the area, many faux fur and hide rugs are adaptable.

Animal patterns are a safe method to mix and match because they are typically timbre, black and white, or monochromatic. Faux fur and skins have been seen in a variety of rustic and glamorous bathrooms, but they may be used in nearly any design style.

Bathroom rugs may be changed seasonally because they are not permanent. In the wintertime, use faux fur and skins, then replace them with lighter, livelier carpets in the spring and summer.

17.

Go for a runner.

Shop this rug on Amazon

A rug runner can be used to form a pathway or to cover a long, narrow floor surface. Runners are commonly seen in corridors, but they may also be a great touch to a bathroom. These cover the floor without making it appear like it’s carpeted from head to toe.

Select a width that is appropriate for your space. In a high-traffic location, it is better to have both feet fall inside the rug’s edge for both comfort and safety. You must also examine the substance of the rug in addition to its dimensions, shade, and design.

Wool rugs are the greatest since they are simple to wash and, because they are made of organic materials, they appear better and feel better underfoot.

18.

Combine bright hues with classic woods.

Create a bohemian-meets-classic bathroom with light wood cabinets and a charming, vibrant runner as the perfect final touch.

If your bathroom has wood cabinetry as well as other wood decorations, a multicolored rug is one bathroom rug design that is sure to add personality, not to mention the two components look great together.

19.

Cotton

Cotton is a widely used fabric in many home goods. It’s a very absorbent textile that dries fast in most conditions. Cotton is among the softest options for bathroom rugs, and it’s also one of the simplest to clean.

Egyptian cotton is another choice along the same lines. It has the same basic properties as regular cotton, but it is somewhat more absorbent and considerably softer.

Most cotton rugs may be washed in a regular machine washing process, depending on the texture and style of the fabric, ensuring that the freshness of your bathroom is easily maintained.

20.

Microfiber

Shop this rug on Amazon

As a synthetic replacement for many textiles, materials made of microfiber are becoming more popular. Microfiber materials absorb moisture, dry rapidly, are less likely to slide, and are typically built to endure.

This material may be one of the softest possibilities for a bathroom rug, relying on the design it is manufactured into (e.g. plain versus fluffy).

Microfiber is made to keep your floor nice and clean. It’s also easy to wash, so you won’t have to complicate your cleaning schedule just for the sake of one bathroom rug.

One disadvantage of microfiber is that certain synthetic qualities might induce skin allergies or moderate discomfort in persons with sensitive skin; nevertheless, hypoallergenic microfiber is available.

21.

Bath mats made from natural materials

Organic bath mats, as well as the aforementioned wooden, platform-style mats made mostly of bamboo, are becoming increasingly popular. Other textiles are made with the intention of being ecologically and socially conscious, and they are thoroughly examined for any dangerous elements.

There are various possibilities for eco-friendly toilet rugs, notably by looking at the fabric’s manufacturing process.

Materials production can be classified as green in any way, although some processes, like ring-spun cotton, are especially eco-friendly. The environmental friendliness of a rug’s manufacture will be stated in the product description.

22.

Create a classic and clean look.

Isn’t it true that a bathroom should be elegant, neat, and polished? Purchase a basic, yet inviting rug to set in front of your bathroom and provide some much-needed warmth to a tile floor to create that streamlined effect.

There’s simply something about vintage that makes a bathroom appear wonderfully unique, and this vintage-inspired bathroom is no exception. Show off a one-of-a-kind treasure that no one else can have.

Consider how your visitors will be astounded by your rug’s pure originality and traditional appearance.

Consider the size of the project.

A rug should always complement the scale of the area, regardless of how big or little your bathroom is. In a large bath, for example, you might be able to lay down an area rug.

If you have a small bathroom, though, choose something that won’t overpower it. In this bathroom, a little, one-of-a-kind rug delivers a stylistic punch and appears to be the right scale.

26.

Choose a rug that complements the wallpaper.

Wallpaper has a unique ability to change a place swiftly and painlessly. A rug that mirrors the style of a wallpaper may also add to the visual appeal of a bathroom.

Select a rug with comparable colors or an identical print to your wall treatment to create a mix and match pattern. The ultimate product will be a very unique area that you can call your own.

Terry cloth and smooth cotton, knitted yarn, cork, pebbles - a do-it-yourself bath rug can be made from different materials and in different ways.

Master class author

Natalya_Pyhova

1. Striped bath mat made of terry towels

Such a mat will absorb water well due to the material from which it is sewn, and rather frequent parallel zigzag stitches give it sufficient rigidity. The main charm of this particular rug is the accentuated irregularity of the stripes that make it look like a zebra skin. For the rug you need two terry towels. From one (in this example, light), cut several uneven strips. From the same towel, cut out a rectangular piece of the bottom layer of the rug, from the second towel of a different color - the second of the same piece. First stitch the strips in a fairly frequent "zigzag" pattern, following the irregularities of the stripes. Then fold two layers of the rug face inward, sew, leaving an opening for turning inside out, turn inside out and sew up the opening. The edge can be stitched off.

Woven bath rug in knit yarn

To make this rug, first knit several long strips of the same length. Knitted yarn is preferable, as cotton jersey is soft and hygroscopic, plus this yarn is so thick that you can knit it directly with your hands. The function of a loom can be performed by a board with two rows of nails driven in from two opposite edges. Pull a strong thread between the nails and weave the mat, knotting the joints of the strips.

5. Bath rug made from fabric braid

This rug can also be made from used terry towels. Pick up several towels of harmonizing colors, cut them lengthwise into equal strips 2-3 centimeters wide. Sew the three strips together and start braiding, extending the strips with a new section when the previous one ends. It should be a long braid. Now you need to roll a spiral from it and stitch the layers in a zigzag or manually to make a round carpet.

An important point for all fabric rugs:

If your bathroom floor has smooth tiles, you can protect the rug from slipping by adding a non-slip rubber mesh backing (sold in hardware stores) on the underside. Mesh can be glued or sewn on.

6. Stone bath rug

If you (or your children) like to collect smooth stones on the sea or river bank, as a result of which you have some supply of suitable stones - smooth, flat, not very small, you can make a bath rug out of them. (By the way, if there is not enough pebbles in the house, you can buy it, for example, in a landscape design store.) A rubber mat of a suitable size is used as a base, and you also need glue that can glue both rubber and stone.

From bags

A plastic bag bathroom rug has many advantages: recycled products save the family budget and have a positive impact on the environment. The photo shows a durable and pleasant to the touch rug, knitted from plastic bags.

Materials and tools

You will need:

Step-by-step instructions

First, we will make yarn:

  1. Fold the bag "accordion", cut off the handles and bottom.
  2. We cut the workpiece into pieces, making equal indents of about 3 cm, we get large rings.
  3. We tie the edges of the rings with a knot and twist skeins of yarn from a double "thread".

  4. We tie a double thread on the hook, without tightening it.

  5. We pull the thread through the hole and get a loop through which we pull the thread again. You need to repeat these steps to form a short chain. We insert the hook into the first hole, tighten the thread and get a round base for the rug.

  6. We pass the hook into the nearest hole and pull out the "yarn". Two loops appear on the hook, through which we stretch the thread. One loop is formed again. According to this scheme, we increase the circle, not forgetting to make increases for each row.

  7. To change the color, untie a knot of polyethylene yarn, tighten the thread of the new shade into the ring and continue knitting until the product reaches the desired size.

From towels

The following workshop will teach you how to decorate your bathroom or toilet with a useful and cozy accessory without any expenses. A soft bath mat is easy to make with your own hands from old towels.

  3. To make the pigtail even, we fix it with pins and threads. Carefully twist the braid in a spiral, imperceptibly stitching the joints from the wrong side. Carpet is ready!

Pebbles

It's easy to make a bath rug out of small pebbles. Low cost, aesthetic texture and benefits for the legs are the undeniable advantages of a rug made of flat river stones.

Pictured is a do-it-yourself bath mat that provides foot massage after a shower.

What do you need?

Materials needed:

How to do it yourself?

Getting started:

  1. Degrease clean and dry stones with alcohol. We put a protective film or paper so as not to stain the work surface. We squeeze a drop of glue onto the stone, then onto the mat, press it.

  2. Gradually fix all the stones. You can also lay out patterns, combining with pebbles in a contrasting color.

  3. Some advise to use varnish to cover the finished product, but this is not recommended - in a room with high humidity it will crack. If desired, you can use tile grout. It is necessary to wait for the time according to the instructions on the tube of glue - and the mat can be used.

Cork rug

If you have a lot of wine or champagne corks in your house, you can make a natural and practical rug that will decorate your bathroom. Cork is an excellent material for wet rooms, as it is resistant not only to water, but also to various microorganisms.

Pictured is a wine cork mat that you can save up on your own or buy online.

Let's get started:

  1. We remove dirt and traces of wine by soaking bottle caps in white for several hours. Rinse well and dry.
  2. Using a cutting board and a knife, cut each cork in half.

  3. Before fixing the corks, it is advisable to lay them out on the base to make sure that there is enough material. We start gluing corks from the edges, but the layout can be any: diagonally, with alternation, pattern or just straight.

  4. To provide additional protection against moisture, we process the finished product with a sealant. Let the cork mat dry before using it.

From pompoms

A very popular and inexpensive way to make a bathroom rug with your own hands is to knit it from pompoms.

Let's get started:

  1. We wind the threads around the fingers, remove the resulting three-dimensional ring and tie it with a thread of the same color. We cut the threads, as shown in the photo:

  2. The amount of material depends on the desired product size. Tie each pom-pom to one side of the mesh. Cut off the ends of the threads.

  3. The closer the pompoms are to each other, the denser and more voluminous the rug will be. You can use different colors and sizes of blanks, then the product will look brighter and more interesting.

Out of old things

Putting things in order in the closet, do not throw away clothes that have served their purpose - jeans and T-shirts. They are useful for creating a rug that can be placed in the bath or shower.

Let's start creating a practical decoration for the bathroom:

  1. Making yarn from a T-shirt. To do this, cut it, as shown in the photo. First, we remove the upper and lower parts, then we make cuts without reaching the edge of the canvas. We cut the left part diagonally and get a continuous thread:

  2. Weave a long braid of three threads, sew it from both edges.

  3. We measure the length of the product and wrap the pigtail clockwise.

  4. We sew pigtails in a zigzag. At the beginning of the braid, we make a hem under the next layer and turn it again. We sew.

  5. Thus, we build up the mat of the desired diameter.
