Do-it-yourself interior and entrance wooden door
Today, there are a large selection of doors in stores, but a quality wooden door is hard to find. Most often they sell a combined door leaf, which is not reliable. In this article we will tell you how to make a durable, durable door from environmentally friendly material with your own hands.
Types of wooden doors
Before you start making a wooden door yourself, you need to familiarize yourself with the main types of doors. Wooden doors come in different designs:
- Solid wood door. Valuable species of wood (oak, maple, beech, ash, etc.) are used for manufacturing. This heavy door is expensive, so most often it is installed as an entrance to a house or a bathhouse. The solid wood door is always treated with protective compounds, so it is durable, not afraid of mold and fungus, and resistant to the destructive effects of fire.
- Paneled. The door of this type is a frame made of processed boards and panels (inserts). At the same time, inserts can be made of chipboard, MDF (inexpensive option) or solid and finger-jointed solid wood (reliable, but expensive door). Inserts are attached with carpentry glue. For the independent manufacture of such a door, carpentry skills are needed.
- Panel. A door leaf made of chipboard, plywood, MDF, honeycomb board (outer skin) is mounted to the wood frame. The internal cavity is filled with glued laminated timber or insulation, and sometimes left empty. The finish can be veneer or laminated film.
- With honeycomb filling. Interior doors of this type are made of a wooden frame, which is completely filled with honeycomb cardboard. Such doors are covered with MDF, which gives rigidity to the entire structure. This is an inexpensive and very light door.
Variety of types of wooden doors
Choice of material for the door
To obtain a high quality product, it is important to consider the type and grade of wood, as well as the quality of processing and drying. What else you should pay attention to when choosing lumber is described in detail in this article.
Wooden doors will last a long time, will not warp or dry out if you choose:
- grade A or “Extra” boards with a flat surface and no defects;
- lumber with a moisture content not exceeding 15%;
- softwoods (spruce, pine, larch) for furnishing interior doors;
- solid woods (beech, oak, maple) for entrance doors.
You can also make a wooden door from a furniture board. This idea is described in detail here.
Instructions for making a door
Making a simple lumber door is quite easy, you don't even need a blueprint. It is enough to know the exact dimensions (width, height) of the door leaf, and calculate the sash taking into account a gap of 5 mm.
Solid wood door
- Prepare dry edged boards 50-60 mm thick.
- Cut the boards to size.
- Join the planks together with wood glue.
- Cut off the unnecessary sash width.
- Clamp the finished structure with clamps and hold on a flat surface until the adhesive dries.
- Level the surface with a router.
- For the cross-beam from the board, you need to cut out the details in the shape of a trapezoid, then make a groove with a router for 0.5 of the thickness of the cross-beam and drive the cross-beam into the groove with a mallet.
- Coat product with antiseptic and fire retardant.
- For insulation, make leatherette lining.
Sample Solid Door
Paneled Door
- Measure the length, width and groove dimensions of all pieces.
- On a board or block for the frame and crossbars, cut a tongue and groove with a router.
- Prepare a groove at the ends of the cross members to secure the panels.
- Prepare the right size chipboard or plywood for the panels.
- Sanitize all prepared parts.
- Assemble the door elements and glue them at the joints.
- Carefully knock out the door leaf with a mallet at the joints, squeeze with clamps and let the glue dry.
- Proceed with the installation of fittings.
Panel door
- For strapping, cut the timber to the width and length of the door leaf.
- Make notches in the ends of the beam for the joint of the frame parts.
- Join frame members with wood glue.
- Drill 10 mm holes at the joints and drive in the dowels.
- For cladding, prepare plywood or fiberboard to match the size of the door, glue the joints between the frame and cladding with glue, mount the frame and place under a press until dry.
- Fill the frame from the inside with timber or MDF, connecting these elements with wood glue.
- After drying, install the upper part of the cladding.
- Route the door surface and frame edges.
Structural features of a panel door
A door with a honeycomb filling is manufactured according to the instructions of a panel door, only the material of the outer skin changes. Installation of a wooden door of any kind is the same:
- Check the position of the door leaf in relation to the doorway and the floor.
- Door hinges are cut into a wooden box, they are mounted flush.
- Hang the door leaf on the hinges.
- Locks and handles are inserted with a drill or screwdriver, then, after checking the position of the crossbars, a groove is drilled in the frame.
Door Decor Ideas
DIY wooden door decor is an important step, because careless work can ruin the entire door leaf. Therefore, carefully sand the surface, then treat with an antiseptic composition. And before painting, be sure to apply a primer (preferably in 2 layers) or putty.
How can a wooden door be decorated?
- Stain or lacquer to maximize the grain of the wood.
- Paint with a spray gun or compressor.
- Apply laminated film or veneer (difficult to do at home).
- Make lining with leatherette.
