Gatsby’s Mansion and others of the Great Gatsby Era — Lawrance Architectural Presentations

Here are just a few of the many mansions that once stood or are still standing along the North Shore of New York's Long Island. This area due to the numerous concentration of estates and mansions built during the Gilded Age became known as the, "Gold Coast". It was here that F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote and partied with the very rich, famous and celebrated people of the 1920's Jazz Age. The Gold Coast started at Great Neck, where Fitzgerald lived and ran along the Long Island Sound to Centerport. When Fitzgerald wrote, "The Great Gatsby", he didn't use just one house or location, but combined many and moved them all around, sometimes those that were almost next to each other ending up being moved across the water.

Here is a list that many historians think were the estates, mansions and locations that Fitzgerald was inspired by when writing,"The Great Gatsby".

This house that is often thought of to be the model for the mansion of Jay Gatsby was a house built by Alva Vanderbilt Belmont. Alva was a real build-aholic, first commissioning the famous chateau on Fifth Avenue, then the still exisitng palace in Newport called Marble House. She also lived at Belcourt Castle in Newport, and had numerous other houses in New York City, Long Island and France. She was the first woman ever elected to become a member of the American Institute of Architects, some say because she commissioned so many houses in her lifetime. In 1917 she had the architectural firm Hunt and Hunt design for her a castle over looking the Long Island Sound. She is said to have commented upon seeing a real Scottish castle that her house on Long Island was more authentic. In the late 1920s William Randolph Hearst, later builder of California's, "Hearst Castle" , bought Beacon Towers and renovated it making it larger and more opulent. He lived there very little, with the house mostly used by his wife, Millicent. The house was demolished in the early 1940s.

This Iconic Gold Coast mansion, stood for over 100 years and according to some accounts was built in 1911. Often attributed to architect Stanford White, it has never been proven. If it was built in 1911, then it is not, since Stanford White died in 1906. While it was a unique piece of architecture, the only thing that it had in common with any Stanford White building was that it was white with big columns, which is pretty classic for most mansions of this style. The massing was very unlike any other houses ever designed by White and bore no resemblance to any other works of his or his firm, McKim, Mead & White. From its over scaled heavy topped chimneys, to its slightly angled plan, which from a design point of view, embraced the site perfectly. This great mansion,recently demolished was one of Long Island's last remaining jewels and sailing landmarks. During a sunny day or overcast day it rose above its site prominently, The Parthenon of the "Gold Coast'.

If you will notice from the maps, that both houses are on the same side of the harbor and even within walking distance along the beach. It might have been possible to have seen Daisy's house from Gatsby's house but it is not across the water. Also both houses are located in Sands Point, which is at the tip of Port Washington. Sands Point is often thought to have be renamed by Fitzgerald as East Egg, the place where old established money lived and not new flashy millionaires like Gatsby. West Egg which was the location of Gatsby's mansion would have been Great Neck, which is the next town west, where Fitzgerald actually lived. Great Neck at the time while having many estates and mansions of it's own, but most not of the scale of Sands Point, attracted many celebrated people from Broadway and the arts. Getting back to the Gatsby mansion and Buchanan mansion, both houses face east looking towards the shore of Glen Cove. In the book, Gatsby's mansion would have been on the eastern shore of Great Neck looking across at the western shore of Sands Point, where Daisy's mansion would have been. But across the water from Beacon Towers,"Gatsby's Mansion",was the estate and phenomenal mansion called Pembroke, which was in Glen Cove. This amazing estate was built by Captain De Lamar, then sold to Marcus Loew, the movie theater magnate. It was here that Fitzgerald probably attended the wild parties during the roaring twenties that were attended by some of the silent screens greatest stars such as Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino and served as inspiration for those depicted in his novel. This estate also had a long dock, with a light at the end, visible from Gatsby's mansion.This mansion was demolished in the 1960s and the estate made into new smaller houses.

If you’ve ever envied the lavish lifestyle of Jay Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s character in the classic 1925 novel, then you might want to pay a visit to Long Island’s North Shore.

This glamorous enclave is home to some of the most breathtaking properties in all of New York, and it served as inspiration for Fitzgerald’s fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg in The Great Gatsby.  

The Gold Coast, as some call this area, is lined with extravagant estates, each one more impressive than the next, but one particular home tickled director Baz Luhrmann’s fancy when he was working on the 2013 Hollywood adaptation of the classic movie.

He used a 1928-built estate in Kings Point to serve as the inspiration for Jay Gatsby’s house in his blockbuster movie which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire.

Baz Luhrmann’s take on Gatsby’s story

The 2013 movie, now often called a modern classic (despite seeing mediocre reviews when it was first released), had a fairly unique take on an all-familiar tale; in Baz Luhrmann’s version, the director used technology, music, and sheer, raw spectacle to translate the exuberant spirit of the Jazz Age to an audience raised on Jay-Z.

The 1928-built estate in Kings Point was crucial to bringing Luhrmann’s vision for the movie to life, inspiring the grandiose residence — and highlighting the immoderate lifestyle — of the title character.

The 14,551-square-foot colonial-style mansion sits on a massive 7.7-acre lot, and features 13 bedrooms and 35 bathrooms. It also incorporates two separate guest homes that come with an indoor pool, as well as a bowling alley, a shooting range, and even a casino.

The main house is the epitome of Jazz Age luxury, featuring multiple wine cellars and tasting rooms, a hair salon, a ballroom, fitness and yoga studios, tennis and racquetball courts, Turkish baths, and several indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

One of them even has a slide and a swim-up bar, perfect for hosting lavish summer parties, Gatsby style.

The massive outdoor space also includes Japanese-style gardens and Koi ponds, as well as a private dock and views of the Manhattan skyline. The property also incorporates a two-level car garage that can accommodate up to nine vehicles. 

According to Apartment Therapy, the estate was previously owned by Russian billionaire Tamir Sapir, who passed away in 2014.

The property was then listed for sale in 2015, with a hefty price tag of $100 million, but there were no takers; it was listed again in 2017 for ‘just’ $85 million, but there’s no word on the grapevine as to whether it’s managed to find a buyer.

Interestingly enough, the house only served as a starting point for the set designers working on the 2013 movie.

Exterior shots were actually filmed at the former St. Patrick’s Seminary in Sydney, Australia, while the interiors were shot on film sets created from scratch to meet the director’s vision.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s inspiration for Gatsby’s house

The Kings Point estate is just one of several properties on Long Island that allegedly also inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald while writing The Great Gatsby.

The writer and his wife Zelda moved to Great Neck in 1922, where he started working on his eponymous novel, writing by day and partying with New York’s socialites and celebrities by night.

Eventually, the Fitzgeralds moved to France, where he wrote the remaining chapters of The Great Gatsby.

The years that Fitzgerald spent in Great Neck inspired him greatly while working on his novel. Even though he didn’t live in a palatial mansion like Jay Gatsby’s, he attended numerous parties on the Gold Coast, and got to know some of the houses that lined it. 

In the novel, East Egg is the fictional version of Cow Neck, while West Egg would be Great Neck. Gatsby’s estate spreads across roughly 40 acres, which seems like a lot, however, properties on the Gold Coast often feature hundreds of acres and are even more lavish.  

Among the North Shore properties that reportedly inspired Fitzgerald’s work were Oheka Castle, Harbor Hill, Winfield Hall (the Woolworth Mansion in Glen Cove), and Beacon Towers.

Some of these properties were well beyond even Jay Gatsby’s means – Oheka Castle, for example, sits on a 443-acre lot, features 127 rooms and 109,000 square feet of living space, and is the second-largest private home in the U.S.

So, even though you’d be inclined to think Jay Gatsby’s house was the peak of luxury, it actually seems quite modest when compared to the real-life homes on Long Island. Sorry, Jay.

Great Gatsby, $85 million house

In this series of posts, I try to talk about real houses that happened to be in films. However, it is unlikely that anyone will agree to let the film crew into the $85 million mansion. Although this is a very interesting house: it was built under the influence of the novel, and became the prototype of the protagonist's estate in the film " The Great Gatsby " Baz Luhrmann . However, first things first.

In April 1925, the novel " The Great Gatsby by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. A love story unfolds on the "gold coast" near New York City, which will not have a happy ending.

Behind these book towns one can easily guess very real towns - Port Washington and Kings Point - separated from each other by the bay Manhasset . Fitzgerald liked to spend time in these places.

During the life of the author, the novel did not become popular. It will be appreciated and loved by readers only in the 50s. In 1998, it was ranked number two on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

However, this story still had admirers in the twenties. One of them built a mansion at Kings Point in 1928, instructing the architects to actually recreate the house of the protagonist from the novel " The Great Gatsby ". On a plot of 3.27 hectares, a palace was erected, surrounded by a park, inspired by the palace complexes near St. Petersburg .

The estate has a "lazy river", an outdoor swimming pool with a slide and bars, a tennis court, Japanese and English gardens, several ponds with fish. Starting the filming of his film version of the novel " The Great Gatsby ", Australian Baz Luhrmann entrusted Oscar-winning production designer Catherine Martin - to his wife to work on the scenery of the picture.
